    Thanks for this! I seem to like my C-70 more and more. I have an R-5 that I love for motorcycle travel vids, but I have even been using my C-70 over my Komodo 9 out of 10 times for B roll. In my latest video, I had to use the C-70 at the end because the R-5 overheated in regular 4k. C-70 to the rescue and I’m kinda liking the footage better. C-70 at the end if you feel like watching.

      @@GriffinConway Overall, it's great. I've put it through some wet conditions for shooting this fall and it seems to be running happily. I am starting to have the LCD screen issue and debating when I should ship it to Canon to get it fixed. It's not floppy yet but clicking. I'd also really like to see them provide view assist over HDMI when you are in review mode. I love using it when shooting but as soon as I go to review I have to turn on the LUT on my monitor which is a silly step in my workflow.

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ScottBell totally agree on the lut when reviewing footage. It’s embarrassing when you are with a client and have to explain why it “looks all gray”. I had the screen hinge issue and sent it in and they fixed it in a few days and it’s great now

    • @ScottBell
      @ScottBell 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GriffinConway Yeah, I end up switching my LUT on and off on the Shinobi when reviewing. I like the look of the footage with the in-camera view assist more than the Canon LUT (not sure why they don't perfectly match) which is why I don't just leave the Shinobi LUT on all the time. How bad was your screen hinge when you sent it in? I don't want them to think mine isn't broken or something and not fix it. It's definitely on it's way but maybe I need it to be more broken first haha.

    I've noticed the same things with my R3 and C70, both imagine quality and autofocus wise. I really dislike the C70 autofocus in lowlight tho, I can never trust it there sadly. R3 can focus much better in lowlight situations which is really helpful (for example on a gimbal, lowlight dance for a wedding). I need to do more tests myself, but you can tune the R3 autofocus to not be so jumpy going to the next possible thing to focus on. I'm also really interested to see how well that Tascam XLR module for the R3 works and compares with the mini XLR's on the C70. Pro's and Con's with both cameras, love the vids Griffin, keep em up!

    Much thanks for your great effort with a very in depth comparison!
    I don't have too much of a choice, as the place where I'm shooting has crazy weather and whatever I buy must be weather sealed...
    I'll just have to live with the other drawbacks. With enough RAM on the computer, file size isn't as much of a problem as it could otherwise be...
    I love using various levels of slow motion, so the R3 should be great for that.

    Useful video, thank you. R3 has no rolling shutter issues, R3 has more detail so you could push in to correct framing in post if needed. Perhaps using an R3 with an external battery and a ninja monitor for the focus peaking video metric would overcome those heating and focus precision issues. Also, if you have a specific blocked shot, you can pull focus to get what you want.

      @@Topher0089 so I live in the PNW and have shot in light and slushy snow over like an hour. Camera was noticeably wet but did pretty well. I used a towel to wipe it down where I could and sometimes left the towel laying on top of the camera while shooting. I've also shot in light rain and it performed pretty well in shorter time increments. I will say if you plan on being in the elements over an extended time I would not feel comfortable with the C70. I'll be the first to admit I haven't done any specific testing, but it's more of a feel for the build quality of the camera. When I was shooting in the snow it seem to collect snow on and around the battery, around the hinges and buttons under the screen, and then a few other places. Those spots don't particularly have a ton of weather sealing and it definitely made me more nervous. 🤷🏻‍♂️ hope that's mildly helpful?🤷🏻‍♂️😂

    • @GriffinConway

      They are both amazing cameras. I have been using the c70 more because my team has multiple c70’s and it makes matching everything super easy. Also the autofocus is better with the “whole area” af mode on the c70 and the battery life is better. Also, size is easier for travel with the c70. All that said, it comes with some pretty heavy trade offs. The c500 mark ii raw is a better image. It’s got a true full frame sensor, so no extra glass to worry about causing glares. Also, when using pl mount glass it still retains the full frame field of view. It allows the operator to play back footage with a lut on it (the c70 won’t let you do this). Also, it offers 2 sdi and hdmi, and also full size xlr. It just comes down to the job for me. On bigger jobs the c500 is better. Run n gun / smaller jobs the c70 is better

    Great comparison, but I slightly disagree with your c70 4K 120 observations. In my workflow, I find there are downsides. You lose dual pixel AF and biggest of all (for me) you lose the dual gain nature of the sensor, which is what makes the c70 image so beautiful to begin with. Compared to other cameras out there that allow 4K 120 withzero limitations I think those are rather serious considerations depending on your workflow.

    All RF lenses I own without doubt outperformes their EF siblings so isn’t it likely to believe that the sharpness and flare performances are mainly about the lenses and not the camera or speed booster…?

    • @davisone76

      I have the C70 with the speed booster. It’s definitely the speed booster. I have an R6 with the regular ef-rf adapter and it doesn’t give the flare. There is also a purple flare in the center that shows up and it’s not flattering at all. I love the C-70 though! I am about to invest in the 24-70 2.0 rf
      It’s going to be sick!

    Basically if you just want video focus camera then go for C70. For me since I am into both photo and video, it will be R3. Now we have R5c coming but I felt like its R5 with fan build in and plus mini C70. Plus it doesn't even have IBIS and latest dual autofocus will not be on video part but on photo. I highly recommend for professional filmmaking, go for Canon Cinema Cameras such as C70 or above.

    Built in ND’s is also huge for c70 i dont think the R3 would have that. Also on c70 switching to non lens ef adapter and lens adapater gives you two focal lengths from each lens. Something that might help when using primes especially and limited gear such as traveling, hiking, etc. As far as sharpness in the test they might have two diff settings or bias. I would add post sharpness to c70 and it holds up super well to adding sharpness in post when you want more such as a crop cut. When will they make a full frame dual gain sensor in a c70 body!? With a tall aspect too for anamorphic capability please. With a new canon anamorphic lens series would be nice!

    Surprised you didn’t mention anything about the lowlight capabilities of the R3 vs the C70. That is supposed to be the greatest strength of the R3. It’s DXO ratings on lowlight make it the best lowlight camera Canon has ever made.

    Hi! Thanks for the video, after watching your videos I've decided to buy me also a Canon C70^^ But.... I got a problem. All went well during shooting, but as I wanted to import the videos on my Mac it didn't work. I couldn't connect my Canon C70 on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports). When I connect with an HDMI or USD cable nothing happens, as if my Mac didn't detect that my camera is connected. I downloaded the Canon XF Utility software compatible with my version of Mac and it does not detect my camera.
    Do you know what I can do to import the videos on my Mac?

      Depends on your budget of course. I think R6 can work. I Imagine more people will be selling the R5's used since the new R5c came out. I might try to go for a used r5 since it does a little better with overheating as far as I remember

    Looks like the R3 footage hits pure black sooner compared to the C70. That's probably means when you bring down the the shadows the mid tones will also come down and the footage will have more depth and form. That's in line with the Komodo and Blackmagic dynamic range. Does that make sense?

    Damn, I was really interested in this camera as an all-around content creator until the mention of overheating. How long did it take for it to overheat with 4k 120? I'd rather use Canon but any chance of overheating is making me think Sony is still more reliable for mirrorless photo+video work, but I'm not sure. Thanks for the review Griffin

    • @themjian
      @themjian 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always wondered how long one need to shoot at 120 for overheating to be an issue. Just curious, because personally, I never need to go over 3 Mins per clip. And don't think it's an issue stopping & shooting many clips like that.

    • @davinphelps1863
      @davinphelps1863 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Canon says about 12mins of 4K 120 before overheating. But 4K 60 (downsampled from 6k) can shoot almost unlimited with a new feature in the R3 that makes the overheat warnings less sensitive I guess. So if you can get away with 4K 60 for your work this camera would still be great and most likely never overheat
