    The fact that the C70 can recover so much information and it’s not recording in RAW really shows the performance of this camera. The “it sucks the C70 can’t shoot in RAW” goes out the window. The 10bit on the C70 is phenomenal and the fact that it’s much easier to edit makes it a solid option.

    • @GriffinConway

      Exactly. I went in to this assuming the c200 raw would do better in the extreme situations, but the c70 is a freaking beast. Let’s hang soon bro! Thanks for checking out the video.

      Agreed about RAW.... Honestly, I rarely shoot RAW even on commercials. My biggest complaint is SDI. If Canon does bring a C90, I sincerely hope it gets SDI. C70 DR is exceptional in the darks.

      So at:
      ISI 100
      f2.8
      1/48
      The image needs to be exposed properly until the shadows are clean, I then underexpose my image until it my shadows are just about to reach the noise floor. In post i raise the shadows by +30 and the result always impressed me. Modern sensors are MUCH better at recovering shadows than highlights.
      I only do this when the scene is lit in a way that I need to either prioritise shadows or highlights. This way I can get both into the image

    Good comparison .but compare raw code and a 10
    Bit Codec in terms of noise is a Bit unequal because raw does no noise reduction internally, it’s raw image.
    But c70 seems pretty good camera for a lot of wedding filmmakers and stuff.

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I understand it is not a “apples to apples” comparison, but I mentioned that I didn’t do any noise reduction and it would perform better with some noise reduction. That said, it is insanely slow to apply noise reduction in premiere and these comparisons already become pretty big projects so for the sake of time I was unable to do it.

    I'm really struggling with the form factor of the C70.
    On my very first C70 shoot last weekend it was a live stream of a half marathon and I was shooting interviews with the race winners and going live to vMix. The LCD in the C70 is not great and I missed the EVF and lack of SDI to run our wireless transmitter.
    It was like OMG this is just the wrong camera to use in this situation.
    I'm in a spin here on what to do but just might send it back and swap for a C200.
    We also run Canon Xf605 cameras, so for much of what we do the c200 might be a better fit for our workflow. Same batteries, similar menu set up, EVF and SDI.
    I really don't do high end work with big client demands so maybe the 4k 8 bit from the c200 will be fine.
    But for me it's the form factor. The lack of SDI and EVF are things I can't do without. Yes you can mount EVFs and larger LCD screens and a cage to the C70 but for me it's just all clumsy and I hate it.

    I think that the differences in high-ISO performance reflect the different gain architectures of the two cameras. The C200 uses conventional preamps, with a limited selection of physically realizable analog gains. The sensor behaves optimally when shooting at ISOs corresponding to those gains (400 and perhaps somewhere around 1600?), but shows increased noise when operating in between, because it has to use a lower-than-ideal analog gain and then scale digitally.
    The C70 has dual simultaneous gains, meaning that it applies both low- and high-gains to every sample, and then combines the resulting values. Light tones can use the results of the low gain if they would have saturated at the high gain, while shadows always benefit from the high gain. You would expect such a camera to have an advantage at low/mid ISOs as you saw, because at ultra-high ISO both cameras are basically using their highest gain for every sample (put another way, even the brightest scene tones are so dark that the C70 can use its high gain without saturating) and in that scenario the C70's dual-gain architecture doesn't give it any advantage.

    • @GriffinConway

      This is not what is usually done on professional sets for a number of reasons. In our particular use case, hdmi introduces more latency than sdi which causes problems for our multi cam switcher. Additionally, c200 can’t output a lut over hdmi, and it is not a locking connection either.

    Hey Griffen can you comment on the sharpness of the c70's image? I noticed - especially from the high iso comparison - that the c70 was noticeably sharper than the c200. Perhaps there was some sort of in-camera sharpening? Or maybe the sensor's really that good at capturing detail. Great comparison btw!

    • @GriffinConway
      @GriffinConway  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The c70 appears sharper to me than c200. That said, I never test sharpness because I don’t think a “sharp” image makes for a good image. In fact, I usually use softening filters. It gives it a more organic look.

    Thanks for the video! Looking to get my first cinema camera and with the recent price cut on the c200, I need more in-depth insight as compared to the c70 (which is the one I’m leaning towards currently). Part of me is wondering if I should wait and see if they update the c200 this year but not sure.
    Also, yo yo cool to see creators coming out of OC!

    I noticed you used a shotgun mic on top of the c70 and I’d love to know what you used to do that and how good the audio quality is when plugged directly into the camera and not to an external recorder. That would make a shotgun mic very versatile to use because you won’t have to buy another on-camera mic. Thank you!

    If you set the noise reduction on the C70 to spacial:1 and frame correlation:1 you can get away with higher ISOs. You get no plasticky softness. The same applies to the C500.

    Nice review @Cliff Conway. Did you do a black balance on the c200? May have helped with the noise in the black. c70 won most tests, but the c200 crushed it on the recovery from overexposed - look at the sky color, more information retained..

    • @GriffinConway

      I black balanced at the beginning of the day. I have owned both for a while and can tell you they aren’t even close in terms of noise, the c70 is much much cleaner

    Maybe this is a stupid question, I've never used a C200 but am interested in one possibly, but can a stripped down C200 be safely mounted to a super telephoto lens such as a 600mm f4 without any support? Of course the lens mounted to a tripod and the C200 mounted by just the lens mount, as if using just a DSLR. Would it be too heavy to hold by just the lens mount? Has anyone tried this??

      Both were on the same autofocus settings. As mentioned to another commenter, these tests take a very long time and they are funded 100% by me personally. They are put up on the internet for anyone to watch completely for free. The results show what each camera is capable of, and it is not biased for one or the other. If you find that one was slightly out of focus, feel free to ignore the image from a sharpness perspective, but that doesn’t change things like out of camera color, noise structure, or dynamic range.
