You finally did it! Was surprised at how many of these I've played, there's some gems in there that aren't the obvious microprose and emlyns. Also very impressed you managed to find different ways of saying crap 30 or so times 😂
International soccer was the first game we played when we got the c64, pretty sure it was on a cartridge . Many marathon sessions playing that one back in the day
International soccer was my 1st and nothing touched it till the last 2 on your list. For me Emlyn Hughes was my favourite. Loved the clutch system of the joystick to get head flicks. Way ahead of its time.
Quality as ever. Nice shout-out to Sensi Soccer at the end. I still contend that Sensi's release somewhat ruined any success I had coming at Uni...that game was just far too addictive.
An updated sensi 2020 is out on pc with updated names and commentary and sound ect with an expert mode for career mode as it was too easy once u mastered editing tactics
Emlyn Hughes for me, the five directional control system was amazing. Microprose was very good, but nowhere near as complex and more arcadey, still a great game though (possibly the first football game to have replays?). Microprose Soccer was actually designed in part by John Hare of Sensible fame. P.S I went on to become a football games designer for my sins. I worked at Silicon Dreams/Eidos and at Gremlin for those with memories lol. I designed the control system for UEFA Champions League 98/99 and 99/00 on PlayStation and designed the commentary system for those games. I also worked on a Premier League manager title and other non football based stuff for Sony and others.
@@oldstylegaming - Only ever tried to do justice to the kid I used to be, to not get it wrong for kids with mates in back badrooms. This starts out playing a bit like “the history of terrible soccer games on the c64” because , as you say, such a small percentage were actually even worth playing
I’m pleasantly surprised that you hold International Soccer (1983) in such high regard. It’s usually on lists of the worst C64 games, and I’ve always thought that was very unfair.
not so amusing when you gotta play them...tbh this video maybe isn't the best for viewers but it was a patreon request so I have to honour that...and its taken so much of my time up im glad its finally done and dusted now
@@oldstylegaming I really enjoyed the video....it's a good example of a sub genre where a lot of hokey games were made. But I remember after years of poor C64 footy games almost falling off my chair the first time I played FIFA on the SNES. It was just such a jump forward.....happy days.
I LOVED seeing MISL Soccer that high on the list! Living in Baltimore, the Baltimore Blast were a perennial MISL title contender, and it was great to have a game based on the league. Easily my most played game on the C64. Also, Microprose Soccer here was known as Keith Van Eron Pro Soccer, Van Eron being the goalkeeper for the Baltimore Blast. The flip side of the disk had the indoor version of the game too! (And the Blast partially owned by Microprose owner "Wild" Bill Staley)
Thank you OSG. I agree with the top (1st and the 2nd). And about the rest, I know quite a few of them but I didn't know that many football games C64 has.
Love EHIS, made my own leagues with promotion and relegation years ago. At one stage had eight leagues going on with 64 teams, some classic international teams and modern (for 1989) teams. Been thinking of setting up another few leagues with modern clubs..........fantastic video BTW and Microprose Soccer is a worthy number one. Well it WAS done by Sensible Software.........What football games did they do after this, anyone know????
It's amazing how many of these games seem like re-skins of other titles. There seem to be half a dozen 'International Soccer' reskins with Emlyn Hughes/Peter Beardsley Soccer etc. Gary Linekers Hot Shot looks (and sounds and seems to play) like Italy 1990 by Ocean. I heard on a video about Ocean software that they reskinned a Euro '84 soccer game for their Mexico '86 title because the guy given the task of designing the game in house didn't get the memo and when asked how the game was coming along, a few weeks before the scheduled release said: "What game?" so they went out and bought somebody's Euro '84 game and rebadged it....
Italy 1990 was my favorite growing up. It was the only one I had that was actually playable. I had Match Day 2 (awful) and International Soccer on Cart. But Italy 1990 was my fav. You can score often from kicking off and running straight and then letting fly half way into the opponents half. Most times it'll sail into the net. You can also score often with a diagonal shot from just outside the far corner of the box. That or if you're good a dribbling, you can run round the goalie and run it over the line :)
I know I used to play International Soccer and Microprose Soccer and enjoying them a lot. But I remember another game called "Indoor Soccer" or something similar, that looked very similar to Microprose Soccer but featured sidewalls so the ball could bounce off them. I liked that football game most of all with the insane curveballs! :)
My brother and I would play MicroproseSoccer for hours and hours on the C64, I remember him beeing a bit better than me (he's 2 years older). But I got my revenge on the Amiga, kicking his butt playing Kick Off 2 (ext.version) with after touch and overhead kicks enabled. After a while he lost interest, or so he said :-D
Nice overview. The only two football games I ever played on the C64 were International Soccer and Microprose Soccer, so I guess I picked two good ones and avoided a lot of crap.
The Mindscape/SporTime games were absolutely boss away from the pitch, as well: team management, promotions and relegations on the outdoor version, the whole kit kaboodle. Heck of a workout for the old 1541, though.
Never really played any other football games other than MicroProse Soccer. The moment I realized you could do hooks in it was mindblowing! Great video as always.
Okay, I was expecting American football after reading the video title :), but enjoyed the video tremendously, nonetheless! Thanks, OSG! It's very interesting to observe the various approaches to implementing a game like this . . . the C64 offers so much potential as a blank slate.
International Soccer was the first game I ever had on the C64 and it was on cartridge, very impressive for it's day, good AI too, played it for many hours.
I had International Soccer as a kid, which my dad picked up from a friend of his. I had no particular interest in any sport, but it was so easy to pick up and play and so much fun that I loved it.
Nice one another great video. The game I thought might be number 1 was your number 2 (won’t spoil!). The one I played the most as a kid was Italia 90, followed by Gary Lineker’s Hot Shot. There was quite a few here I’ve never heard of. That Codemasters street soccer one looked good to me and one of the other less congenital ones - forgot it now 😂 It’d be great if you could do a C64 football manager list too - that was the (sub) genre I played most and still have so many of them. Cheers
I played international Soccer all the time. Emlyn Hughes was a replacement in a way - I loved Emlyn Hughes as you could boot the ball in the air. I preferred Emlyn Hughes to Microprose Soccer, even though Sensible Soccer is one of my favourite games of all time. One C64 football game I play quite often is Soccer Boss - it is fun to have a game on the go in the background.
And that's why it is the best game involving football to this day. Not necessarily the best football game, if you understand me: the two are different accolades. If the best game involving football in Kick Off 2, the best representation of football in a game might be Pro Evolution Soccer 6 or one of the later ones in recent years.
Bro... I loved it C64 days. I was 13 when I got my first ‘real’ set-up. Having evolved from ColecoVision - the sheer vastness of potential game options on C64 was like nothing else. I remember buying ‘some’ games. Maybe 6-10 tops over so many years. I would’ve 200-300 different games tho. Most of em random; dumped on some disc with 4-5 other games and just playing everything once and mining for gold. I’m glad that for all the games on your list, Let can only confirm absolutely having played 2 of the 40. Luckily they ranked #4 and #1. I do have to concur 100%. The #1 game was mint. The mechanics of the ball/player movement; scrolling were so advanced versus anything to date. I remember in particular; the movement you could put on your shots once you knew what you were doing meant you could basically set fire to the other 39 games the day this game out: 🐾🥰🙏🕺🤓
Personal faves, Gary linekers soccer(not the top view one, the sideview one I think mindscape made it) and microprose soccer, and my footballish favourite is footballer of the year.
Great video! The conclusion is that only two games were good: No2 Emlyn Hughes and No1 Microprose. And International Soccer because it was phenomenal for its date. I don't quite get why Gazza II was in 15th place instead of 45th. 🙂 As a kid I played a lot Match Day 2, which was great BUT desperately slow as you said.
Haha superb man. World Cup Carnival was hands down one of the worst I remember, me and my brothers still laugh about that one and Peter Beardsley's terrible game to this day.
Nice compilation. I played most of this games, but enojed only Emeyn Hughes Soccer (I had original disk released by LK Avalon in Poland :)), International Soccer and of course Miscroprose Soccer. Last game was more known in my city as "Microsoccer" because it was the usual name on tape compilations - it was very popular in my class when I was going to school in eraly 90s :) I also spent much time with Manchaster United Europe, because it had a really unique (for C64) management segment and it was simulating many european cups. You could get a yellow/red card during a game, there was a referee runing on the filed... probably most complex footbal game on Commodore :) OSG - please make a compilation about sports manager games :) There were quite a few, like Kenny Dalgish Footbal Manager or Soccer Rivals :)
For me Commodore Soccer (great Andrew Spencer) was the best one... I spent hours with my friends (1985-1987) to play this game.. Even today I relax playing it.. Microprose Soccer was great too.. I liked also Peter Shiltons Handball Maradona... The rest...were not worth to play... Thanks for this compilation!!!! great!!!
The only one on this list I played a lot was International Soccer 1983. Solid game but I do recall it had a major flaw in the gameplay whereby you could simply walk the ball into the goal making the experience a bit redundant.
What I remember most about international soccer was the fact it was on cartridge and so was instantly playable and... You could run the entire pitch with the ball on your head!
Outstanding work as ever. Just a little complain: kick off (the first one) for c64 has a game breaking bug: you can start from the kick off using the lob, go to the goal wihtout anyone moving, press fire and get a goal counted...
Microprose Soccer really is a top 8 bit football game. To me it was like having an arcade game at home on the breadbin and in facts it has similar graphics to Tekhan World Cup. It's also packed with options and game modes. As I had the original, I also played the indoor variety that was on the other side of the tape (wich was deemed to be the american version..).
International Soccer holds up pretty good considering when it was made, also liked the street sports soccer as well they were the 2 I played most of the soccer games
@@oldstylegaming seriously don't apologise! I love your content and I can imagine how much time and effort it must take to research and make these videos. Keep it up! 😊
Probably the only thing about retro gaming il never miss ...!! My first ever experience of computer football was match day on the 48k I did at the time think it was great but after afew weeks of collecting more games it stayed at the bottom of the pile till I sold the computer ..em Hughes soccer was really good on the specky and kids at school would always talk about there long range goals... Match day 2 I was really looking forward too playing but it was crap !!! .. luckily I never spent my money or wasted cassette space on these !!! But there's s about 4 good ones I missed out on ..
Hi! Just an idea: Would you make a list of the best football manager games as well? I have not found such a list from you yet. One of my favorites is Match of the Day (it is not the same as Match day)! But there is a glitch in every uploaded emulated version. It freezes when I talk with the doctor in the game... As I could recall, I had no such problem with the original C64 version. Moreover, I have some additional ideas for C64 game lists.
Thanks for the Rolf Harris connection mention, I think 😂 On a side note LFC and Graham Souness soccer are incredibly swos-esque to a point that sensible must have used the ideas.
Had lots of the games at the bottom of this list. Thought they were fun back in the day but I see they were anything but lol. The top 2 are interchangeable really as both were outstanding but I played more Emlyn Hughes as you could change the kits, team names and player names. Special shout to Peter Shiltons Handball Maradonna - spent hours on that fun game :)
I had & played the 4th Placer in this Vid! :D Holy hell a lot of the low placers in this List look like they were made as an act of flat out Trolling. XD
that's football american viewers.... you play it with your feet not hands, that's hand ball or rugby as we call it here in england where we invented it by.... picking up the ball and running with it but, we don't wear full body armor............
One other comment on my beloved MISL Soccer. As with SuperStar Soccer, you could play an exhibition with any team, but to play the league mode, you created an expansion team, with all low-end talent players. You could train your team to improve them, create new players, or trade players (with a "transaction fee"). All of these took "ability points" (you started with 300, and depending on where you finished you earned more. (More points for a lower team, less for a higher team, designed to help improve the weak squads.) However UNLIKE SuperStar Soccer, you didn't play all your games. Games that were against a Western Conference team were "road games" and simulated, so at the start, you'd expect to lose to San Diego or Tacoma 11-0!
Firstly, kudos for 30 descriptions of footy shite! that must've took some imagination lol. 42 though? that's a gotta be a record with commentary m8? I remember many of these games but not being a footy fan I didn't bother with football games until the 16-bit era . Wasn't aware Kick Off was on the C64, played it lots on Amiga. Only one I've played from this list is International Soccer which I got on cart with my C64 pack, I loved it! Great list m8, lots of work put in shows :)
Thanks mate, its been like a niggling ache that has been hounding me for a while..i knew i had to do it but like you said the 30 games that were crap ..well...were crap ...nightmare to comment on tbh
i agree microprose soccer was the best, and talking of ridiculous curling of the ball, you could change the settings so the ball would do a full circle
Microprose soccer looks like it made for another console. If I hadn't played it back when I was a kid I've been thought looking at screenshots and videos that it was from the Master system
Great video, I am not a fan of football, but I did like the old football games. I think that the C64 could have done a nice version of Sensible Soccer, I mean Microprose Soccer was actually written by Sensible Software... heck the little sprite style would have worked great. Back in the day my uncle had International Soccer on cartridge, we loved that game... maybe just because it loaded instantly and we were impatient little shithawks.
Man i had World Cup 86 back in the day and being 12 at the time i was over the moon i got it. An the i played it and dear lord i took it back to the computer shop and got a refund , told them it didn't work😂. After that i stuck to the manager games until i got my amiga that being said i did play a few of these at a mates house oh the joy 😂😂😂. Great video as always buddy keep up the great work.

It's also packed with options and game modes. As I had the original, I also played the indoor variety that was on the other side of the tape (wich was deemed to be the american version..).
International Soccer holds up pretty good considering when it was made, also liked the street sports soccer as well they were the 2 I played most of the soccer games
I noticed the lack of 'SuperCup' as well, but I totally get that, it's not the best known game. This was a brilliant watch OSG, thank you! 👍🏻😁
Im sorry mate its hard to find them all between my roms, lemon64 and other c64 websites... im sad now ive missed one
@@oldstylegaming seriously don't apologise! I love your content and I can imagine how much time and effort it must take to research and make these videos. Keep it up! 😊
I agree with the top 2 definately but Sensible World of Soccer will always be my nest footie game as I'm a goal scoring superstar hero!!!
Thanks for the Rolf Harris connection mention, I think 😂
On a side note LFC and Graham Souness soccer are incredibly swos-esque to a point that sensible must have used the ideas.
International soccer a great game, I remember came on a cartridge with my C64 also had klax, flimbos quest and fiendish Freddy a big top o fun
Great video. You can see the effort.
Cheers mate.
Great video. The other one I remember was footballer of the year.
That graeme souness one looks very sensible socceresque
MicroProse Soccer is not only a top C64 football game, but one of the best computer games ever made, period.
The Graeme souness one looks really good, surprised it's not higher
Had lots of the games at the bottom of this list. Thought they were fun back in the day but I see they were anything but lol. The top 2 are interchangeable really as both were outstanding but I played more Emlyn Hughes as you could change the kits, team names and player names. Special shout to Peter Shiltons Handball Maradonna - spent hours on that fun game :)
Championship was my fave (3rd place) when I bought my C64 the cart was included. Played it for yonks. Back then, I thought the graphics were great.
I had & played the 4th Placer in this Vid! :D
Holy hell a lot of the low placers in this List look like they were made as an act of flat out Trolling. XD
that's football american viewers.... you play it with your feet not hands, that's hand ball or rugby as we call it here in england where we invented it by.... picking up the ball and running with it but, we don't wear full body armor............
2. is amazing considering it's a C64 game. it looks better and smoother than some DOS games that came out later. woah.
I cant remember the name of a footie game that had a story mode before the match, where you had to gather your team or something
I think (although i dont show that part on here) the game is roy of the rovers as you have to do that on that game
@@oldstylegaming ahh yeah! Thanks. I couldnt remember what game that was! The match footage seemed line that was the one!
I thought it was Gary Lineker’s superstar soccer, not just superstar soccer.
Perfect judgement from you, the number 1 is correct. Fantastic game.
(More points for a lower team, less for a higher team, designed to help improve the weak squads.)
However UNLIKE SuperStar Soccer, you didn't play all your games.
@@oldstylegaming Hopefully yer next vid will be less of a grind ;)
@@Lucasrainford lol ive already done it ;-)
@@oldstylegaming Grease lightning!
easy when the games are as good as they are on the FM Towns
i agree microprose soccer was the best, and talking of ridiculous curling of the ball, you could change the settings so the ball would do a full circle
Microprose soccer looks like it made for another console. If I hadn't played it back when I was a kid I've been thought looking at screenshots and videos that it was from the Master system
Hughes and microsccer were my changes also.
Is World Championship Soccer a port of the game better known as World Cup Italia 90 on the Megadrive?
There is also A six a side soccer version of the microprose soccer which I like more cos is faster but little bit more difficult IMO
Can’t argue with those top two at all!!!
My top 2 matched yours. Both great footie games.
Right Amiga had amazing footy games. I had 1 great footy game on the C64 so I see where it is on the list. It was No 2😊
well i love both 1 and 2 in this list tbh
oh damn i remember playing microprose soccer with friends all day, every day xD
Street cred footy was great on my mates Specy back in the day
Wading through the muck so we don't have to. Thanks :)
definitely mate...im all waded out but doing a good video next on the FM- Towns so that will make up for the crap ive played here
@@oldstylegaming nice! Looking forward to it.
International Soccer gets my vote and on cartridge as well.
Match Day - the sprites look like Freddie Mercury
Man i had World Cup 86 back in the day and being 12 at the time i was over the moon i got it. An the i played it and dear lord i took it back to the computer shop and got a refund , told them it didn't work😂. After that i stuck to the manager games until i got my amiga that being said i did play a few of these at a mates house oh the joy 😂😂😂. Great video as always buddy keep up the great work.
Endless time spent playing Microprose Soccer. Germany super hard to beat!! Great game and deserved to win!
Hi and congrats for your retro knowledge.
I wanted to know this : which is a a C64 football gams where is not too difficult score and Ai is rather forgiving?
I ask as beginner :)
Thanks again !
International soccer or emlyn Hughes is pretty easy
@@oldstylegaming
Thanks if I m correct Hughes is evolution of 1983 international soccer
And one last thing sorry: from 90's if you know ,Wembley international soccer for Amiga is a very good game?
Thanks!!
I could predict #1 even before i see the vídeo. Micropose Soccer os a great game and is miles ahead of the competiition. Great memóries playing that game
I had a few of them games I am totally with you on the number 1
You madman, you did it! You played every footy game on the C64. And considering how many bad ones there are, that is quite an achievement!
P.S.: There seems to be a typo in the title. It says "is" instead of "in". ;)
oh...lol i never even noticed that...ill change it now thanks :-)
I was pissing myself at you roasting 20 games 😂 'They called it Fantastic Soccer, as they couldn't call it Shit Soccer' 😂😂😂 Ah this was brilliant, and I have to agree with No.1 but that's because it's the only one I remember playing 👍🏴
Was never much into football games however Nintendo world cup on NES i really enjoyed
Microprose Soccer - forever No. 1!! ⚽👍😍😉
