The downfall started back in 80's, after 80's congress never got more than 50%+ seats in loksabha.
Actually after babri masjid demolition, that actually gave big blow to congress and bjp emerged as a national party in true sense before that it had 3,4 seats in loksabha.

One more thing, we need to understand that these are public statements and may vary slightly from the real reasons for them leaving the party. We should consider this aspect as well.
Even then, issues like inept leadership, lack of direction & democracy within the party are pretty clear from these.

Would be interesting to flip the argument and ask ourselves: Would these 70 leaders have left if Congress continued to remain in power? We talk about these leaders feeling disrespected, however we all know that there is no other party who insults its leaders openly and brazenly like the BJP yet not a single one has the guts to say a word against the Modi-Shah duo. Why? The answer is simple - they win elections for the party.
The easiest thing to do is to desert a sinking ship, the hard thing would be stay in and fight it out, even if it means fighting with the Gandhis. Let's not kid ourselves - even if the Gandhis step down today, will the party miraculously transform and start winning elections ? You need people with integrity and selflessness to stick their neck out and fight for as long as it takes. BJP / RSS is an extremely powerful force with money, media and muscle and Rahul Gandhi stepping down from Congress is not going to change anything.
The first sign of an idiot is doing the same thing again and again and hoping for different results.
Keep in mind this statement. The congress needs to reinvent itself in order to win elections; Rahul Gandhi has not shown that he is capable to win elections, so shouldnt it be obvious that someone else should be given the chance.

Inversion doesn't really work here as 8 years is a long time in politics. We've seen a lot of liberal leaders step down after two election defeats world over. You cannot expect to lose two elections and hope the party workers will stay onside. Resigning and retiring to the background is the dignified option in this case. I don't know Sonia Gandhi but she absolutely wants her children to hold power. Reminds you of Game of Thrones 😂

This is not the grand old party of India, it has been split many times. This latest iteration was created in 1969. Original Congress had merged into Janta party.

Very thought provoking video. Thanks for the wonderful analysis of the situation. It's unfortunate to see the incompetent opposition led by a a sinking party. Congress needs to get rid of nepotism. RG is practically berozgar without politics. His hunger or rather need for politics and incompetence are the only reasons for the decline of the otherwise wonderful party. Other regional/national parties are too small to form a credible opposition. If Congress wants to save democracy, it should first look inward and democratize the dictatorial party structure led by sycophants and a childish, foolish and incompetent leader. A weak Congress is not good for the country. Congress needs to press the reset button.

I do hope the congress leadership introspects and rejuvenates the party in time cos we badly need a strong opposition now, when democracy is facing an existential threat. We keep cribbing about not having young representatives in politics and then lament the retirements of 70/80 YOs who have ruled for decades and amassed wealth for themselves & their families (slightly generalizing it). Churn in any organization is good and regardless of whether Cong survives or not, it’s good that such oldies are finally quitting politics in hope of better prospects which doesn’t anyways exist for them ! The young ones, they will of course change parties just like we change jobs, we all want a better pay and a meatier job profile - can we blame politicians for that ?

Not all old politicians are useless, you need them for their experience and for moving the masses.
And greed can be in both young & old, so cannot blame only old for others.
Changing parties is not equivalent to changing jobs because some parties opposite ideologies, how can one change his ideology in 1 day?
I am not a political person at all, not supporting any party. But I know that if the old people go away, they take away their experience with them. You loose access to their huge reservoirs of experiences. It is like memory loss. And when you loose memory, you don't know what to do next....

The assasinations of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi were a major blow to Congress. But trying to maintain leadership within the family after this led to its downfall. If the party members don't have confidence in the leadership, and the sheer numbers including those who were long serving members have cited this, it says a lot. Post-independence, it was only Congress at the time that could lead India out of the shambles. Sadly, its a lost cause now!!!

Also he was never a mass leader (although congress have very less mass leaders biggest drawback)
