    We streamed our live games on Twitch for a while and uploaded different content on YT. The YT channel started to grow slowly over time. We had the talk that we didn’t like having to split the content between two platforms due to Twitch only being a Live stream platform. We moved completely to YT with all of our content, and although we don’t stream as much our turnouts have been better on YT. For us it was one of the best decisions we made a creators back in January.

    My huge problem with TH-cam, which became a dealbreaker for me, is that, as it was mentioned, livestreams are undiscoverable. If you're a streamer *only,* then it would make sense to switch to TH-cam if you have an audience already because people will search for *you* specifically. But if you have no one to search for your channel, nobody is gonna see your stream on TH-cam. However, on Twitch people can directly dive into a category they're interested in, and they can stumble upon you easier than here.

    • @NintendoCade
      @NintendoCade 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      False

    • @aleatar
      @aleatar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@NintendoCade arguments? I mean, that doesn't necessarily mean that absolutely no one can become a streamer on TH-cam from 0 subs, but, e.g., I'm a viewer. How am I supposed to search for livestreams of Far Cry, if there are no categories or filters on TH-cam? Almost no one is going to "live" tab just for the sake of scrolling random streams - we, as viewers, search for something according to our interests atm. Not to mention that, like on Twitch, the streams on top of the page are always the most "popular" ones.

    • @ASpoonfulofNorway
      @ASpoonfulofNorway 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@aleatar i agree. As a viewer im interested in food streams, and its impossible to discover streamers in this category on youtube for me. Unless im already subbed to them. There is no way to filter them out, its heavily focused on gamingstreams and they only show a handful of streams for browsing at the time. Realisticly there are prob more food streamers on youtube than twitch, its just impossible for me to find them through livestreaming.

    • @aleatar
      @aleatar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ASpoonfulofNorway exactly, that's my point. As a viewer, I won't sit all day searching and searching for livestreams I like, I'll just go to Twitch. And as a streamer, I usually hope to find mutuals who share my interests and all, and that interest is what exactly I'm streaming atm. That's how you find your "own" audience. And only after you establish your own audience people will search for you because of YOU, and not only because of your interests.
      Streamer Valkyrae would be the great example.

    • @BossManSays
      @BossManSays 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. TH-cam needs to update their UI and focus more on live streaming. They don't even have a tab for live streaming. It's all a jumbled mess. Until TH-cam finds a away to clearly define what's live content versus what's recorded content. Discoverability on TH-cam is still hard because you're still gambling on the algorithm to shine its light on you.

    I think there are some great points in this, I recently moved from splitting my time between youtube and twitch streaming, to only streaming on twitch. I found that though my numbers were significantly larger on youtube vs twitch, there was huge difference in the community. Twitches user experience is so much more welcoming and interactive whereas youtube's felt colder, at time's it felt like people were discovering a livestream for the first time, when visiting my youtube streams.
    Another big difference from a business point of view was that despite having several hundred average views more on youtube, the earnings were on par or much less than on twitch and I don't think that's necessarily due to the monetization options that were available. People were less likely to donate (on youtube), but when they did, more often than not, they donated considerably more.
    I hope that in the future youtube makes livestream both more searchable, but also their lives more user friendly, when that happens, I'll happily return.

    The only thing I wonder about is whether or not the ability to move people over is something to even worry about. Is it possible that the people who WOULDNT move from your Twitch to your TH-cam are the same people who would either way not enjoy that content as much? Is it better to have a dedicated place for those who enjoy watching Live Content and (a different place for) those who enjoy watching Produced content? Instead of capitalizing on the conjoined numbers?

    I’ve been streaming one day on TH-cam and one on twitch recently. I’ve noticed getting viewers from TH-cam to go to twitch (using my long/short form content) is VERY low, but my current TH-cam community enjoy coming out to a livestream on TH-cam. What’s been nice as well is having someone who has clearly just watched a video jump into my live stream as it’s on the channel and talk about it, or even refer to a video listed on my channel, have them watch it and jump back in stream without having to leave TH-cam. The potential is massive and a few more weeks of feeling things out and a move might happen

    I'm surprised you never brought up one of the biggest cons of TH-camrs streaming on Twitch: TH-cam doesn't like it when you send people to their competitors website (no social media does). I wish we could know what extent this affects the algorithm but there is no doubt that TH-cam wants people to stay on their platform and if you promote your Twitch too much this can have a negative effect on your channel.

    I can see why you made the move and it makes sense and I greatly appreciate the insight.
    For now I believe my best move is to continue to stream on Twitch while I work on growing my TH-cam channel since it has only just started. That said I might end up making the same move in a year or two's time depending on how TH-cam and Twitch change and what happens overall with my TH-cam channel.

    Harris I think I know how to make Live streams more discoverable at least for someone just clicking on the stream at any given point. TH-cam or the streaming platform would allow the content creator to make a 10-30 second preview of the live stream that the new viewer would have the option to click on first and then be directed into the stream. Imagine a pop up window but with actual content specifically designed for your audience.
    For example: A fortnite youtube doing open lobby custom games could say " Hello viewer___________ I am playing fortnite customs and you can join. We are doing shotguns only and then playing hide and seek with two seekers. Come and join the game and get a chance to play with me.
    This mini preview pop up would make live streaming far more discoverable and give the viewer actually context into what is happening instead of just the description or title of the stream which is extremely limited. I'd love to go into this more and build this idea out!

      A full video on this would be nice and it's probably coming. He has mentioned on the youtube live stream that it's best to unlist the stream after it's finished because it will affect your numbers negatively. Most people just watch small portions of the entire stream and the algorithm currently doesn't like that.

    I produce a stream and have 2 of my own (1 personal and one podcast). The one I produce wanted to move to TH-cam because they felt like it was there best bet for being discovered. I am going along with that just to keep the design aspect straight in my own head (just working on TH-cam related elements). My huge problem is that TH-cam's API has been changed according to StreamElements and things like sub alerts are delayed by hours. I am a small streamer and losing that kind of interactivity sucks right now. I want to be able to welcome new subscribers with open arms, not find out the next day about them.

    The number one thing I hate about watching live streamers on youtube is the layout, it's the same as the static content which means you get a tiny window (unless you go cinema mode and lose chat) and an awful tiny chat window. Whatever happened to the youtube gaming platform they launched that had a similar style layout as twitch and was some what browseable? one thing that youtube does have that doesn't really get mentioned alot is the premier/sheduled streams that give notiifcations to subs, you can even not as a sub set a reminder fo the start of the stream.

    One big reason I never streamed on TH-cam:
    Several countries in the world still don't have the ability to send or receive superchats/donations via TH-cam.
    Which includes Malaysia, where I live. So, I just can't make any money off donations on TH-cam, even if the viewer is from a country that allows superchat such as India or US.
    If this wasn't the case, I would never even think about Twitch.

    That makes so much sense, live is hard. Compared to posting videos for clicking. Interesting point that I never thought of. But I have been taking advice from social media with a grain of salt at some points, my perspective is if I am going to be on twitch live then post content for TH-cam I may as well be on one platform, hence TH-cam, however I have not made that change yet and I'm not growing on Twitch in the last 3 years I've been streaming. I'm in a middle funk. Not sure where to go at this point. I also have an etsy shop. I have literally spread myself thin at this point and haven't made as much TH-cam content. Not enough hours in the day especially when you aren't generating any revenue.

    I'm debating on starting to stream and haven't decided on a platform. Most of the reasoning seems to center on existing audience. I know for sure I need a youtube channel and I do know I'd be a variety/diverse content creator so that does lean me towards TH-cam but Twitch just feels...warmer. You get to setup channel rules and get custom stream redeems. I'm still in my research/planning phase but its started to look like the only way is to just experiment and find out.

    So much of the experience I've crafted for my own viewers relies on Twitch's viewer interaction features, particularly channel points and extensions. As appealing as TH-cam's far better discoverability is, I would rather make the best experience I can for a smaller audience and make sure they really enjoy their time and come back for more, as opposed to just making an average experience for viewers, who then are less likely to tune back in in the future.
    If TH-cam can catch up with twitches viewer interaction features, that will be the day I jump ship without a second thought. But for now, the closest you can do on TH-cam is through a third party service, like streamlabs or stream elements, which is kind of clunky for interaction, and in my opinion brings the experience down dramatically.

But also I watch three youtubers who either also stream or who only exclusively stream and, except for one, they all use twitch. Great video! I've given up on growing on twitch. I've really buckled down on making content on TH-cam with high quality videos, seeing growth from that. However I'm also restreaming. Makes more sense to me to expose myself on as many platforms as possible since I'm small and just starting out. For me it's about exposure first, just getting noticed.

    Hey Harris! I found something about TH-cam that's really interesting and I want to hear you talk about it. So, the copyright claim system has been abused a lot on TH-cam and it's not a new thing. Some showed and tried the methods to combat this copyright claim system by *ALSO* abusing it too (As shown in "Abusing TH-cam Copyright Claims (Tutorial)" by The Original Ace).
    Basically, music that you own gets published through a music distributor (DistroKid, etc) and then the company will search your music on your behalf and copyright claim it through Content ID. Note that you can't copyright claim videos on your own because you are an individual and not considered as a company (The music distributor will act as the company). If you aren't eligible for TH-cam Partner Program already, getting copyright claimed will "force" ads to appear on your video. You can collect money through the music distributor through that, but that's just changes for pocket money.
    What I think this might be really useful for is as shown by what "ymfah" is doing (as shown in their "How to Break TH-cam (Copyright Claim your own video) video"). Even if his video got copyright claimed by some company (or just some scummy douchebags), he still gets 50% since he also claims his own video through a company. So instead of all his video's effort getting taken, at least he gets some percentage of his video's monetization (50% if claimed by two companies, 33% by three, and so on I think).

    I’m about to start my career into streaming but also short clips and possibly other content. So what you said is in line with my thinking. For me, most likely gonna go with TH-cam. I would say though the defining decision between the two aside from the flexibility for visibility is the monetization and the community. TH-cam has that ability to be flexible and get your content out there and get seen, but making it get monetized is much harder; whereas you have a community on twitch that is on there for the obvious reason, to watch people play games; however, it’s lost on me due to the research I’ve done where getting visibility is just as hard if not harder for someone who is about to start.
