As a full time creator my advice is to just create the content you enjoy at the highest quality it can be and to post it as consistently as you can. In order to get growth as a channel it’s all about providing content people can enjoy aka the longer someone watches your video the higher the probability your video will get recommended around. Just think, would you sit down and watch your own video? If the answer is no then make one you would

As a film-maker and TH-camr who just surpassed 100k subs, I can honestly say that weekly content is an unreasonable standard. Art was never meant to be manufactured in a warehouse, on an assemble line. It's important to make the best videos you can, not to "just make content" because you "need a video that week." It's important to take breaks, recharge the creative juices and then get back to work. 🤘

I stumbled across something by accident that might work. Film when you want to, but only upload one or two videos a week, even if you filmed five videos that week. That way, you build up a Catalogue of videos that you can release on a regular schedule, even in weeks where you didn't film any videos.

I just finished a 30-day challenge where I posted a new video every day and not only am I completely burnt out but all my analytics are on a steady downward trend for like 3 weeks even with DAILY UPLOADS!! I'm happy I finished the challenge but it's absolutely better to focus on making 1 great video and not 10 just ok videos. You can get way more views with less work focusing on 1 quality post versus the quantity approach.

The reality of it is... you have to be willing to post at least once a week for a very long time, most likely 6 months to a year until one of your videos gets put into the algorithm. You have to be content with seeing 50 views on a video that took you hours to make, weekly. Not many people have the motivation for that, let alone the extra time for that risk. Especially if you end up quitting before youtube puts one of your videos on peoples recommended... it will have been a huge waste of time. Thats why there HAS to be a deep down passion to create, similar to an artist that volunteer to paint or draw something nobody wont even ever see... just because they enjoy doing it. Do that, if you dont have that creative passion, please dont waste your time. Even if you do get a semi-viral/viral video you will end up quitting eventually because of that lack of creative passion/motivation.

I always appreciate your honesty and "get to the point" way of saying things. You are the first person to mention ads. I tried ads on two of my videos and yeah.. they got views, but my average view duration dropped to about 0:30.. It kinda sucks since you're paying for it and you expect it to work better than any other service out there because it's a google product and you're targeting a specific audience. Thank you for also saying that youtube doesn't promote your content at the beginning, because I'm tired of click-baits who say bullshit on how to grow your channel. I've already learnt from my analytics that youtube doesn't promote it. I got only one video that suddenly got suggested and grew organically after 1 year.

I have three things to say about consistency:
    1. I have experienced a fair amount of growth during periods where I didn't upload. I'm moving to a "when it gets done" model for content, meaning that a single video takes a couple weeks to come together in terms of researching, writing, recording and editing.
    2. Some fairly large creators on the platform don't have anything remotely resembling an upload schedule. Creators like Philosophy Tube, Hbomberguy, and Contrapoints upload one big video every month, if not every several months, which makes sense when you consider the length, amount of research, and overall production value of their work.
    3. Frequent uploads can actually hurt you due to subscribers eventually not getting notified if they miss so many uploads. There are many cases where creators pulled it back a bit and wound up seeing an increase in views.

I'm so grateful for your musical contribution to the streaming/TH-cam community. The DMCA thing, while well-intended, can be broken and daunting. There are so many instances where Twitch thinks your content is fine, but TH-cam does not, or an artist with the rights to a sampled song declares they are "free-to-play" but the algorithm still detects the original sampled song, or sometimes an artist just declares verbally they're "free" but the DMCA algorithm doesn't agree. It's a giant headache, and while I don't currently and likely will never make money from either Twitch or YT, I am very appreciative of the effort you've given to provide people like me with music AND written validation of permission to be able to listen to good music and also not worry about any of the red tape.

I needed this advice! With having to work a job a lot I often try to rush my video making process and end up cutting corners. I’m going to get better about taking my time and creating a quality video

Thank you for this! Just returning to a YT channel I had stepped away from and this time trying to make it fun for me and a collaborative context of making it fun (or meaningful) for others. This helped remind me that quality is number 1 tied to my whole mission and reason for doing this. Thank you for voicing this critical message!

I stumbled on this today and thank you!! Your first point was exactly what was holding me back. Starting a cooking channel and I didn't know how I was going to learn while keeping up the pace at posting once a week. I was feeling paralyzed by it. Thank you for giving me permission to just take the time I need to get a quality video out, since I really don't know how to use my camera properly, don't know a lot about lighting, need to learn how to make thumbnails, etc. This really inspired me.

Kind of disagree with the not posting weekly or on a set schedule. Or well I agree that you shouldn't do it because the youtube algorithm, but I think the biggest risks most creators have is to just go for too long without posting a video and then it just becomes a non-priority.
If you are committed to posting 1 video every week and feel beholden to that, then you are more likely to make that happen and it will ensure you do some work on your videos/channel every week. But if your mindset is that you will just post whenever you feel like it, you easily fall into a rut where it goes weeks or months without doing any work on your videos.
If this 100% won't happen then I assume just spending time improving your skills over holding a specific schedule is as good or better. But I think even for most people who are 100% sure this won't happen it's pretty likely to happen 😬

This is exactly what I’m going through right now! I’m allowing myself to be more open to learn about myself and I can tell you right now when I edit or doing all my post-recording work, I have so much more energy! The ideas and content creation are so much more enjoyable. 😊

My first video got nearly 400k views (as of now), and my second video got picked up by the algorithm as well (and was sadly taken down due to it having some 18+ clip I can't even find). I can say it's a lot of making your youtube channel have something others don't, and putting a lot of effort into not only your videos, but just overall making your channel look legit and professional.

I've been so focused on getting my videos right since I've started publishing, and still ended up making most of these mistakes. Watching the TH-cam algorithm slowly grow and adapt with me is honestly the most exciting part of the journey.

The running ads one is so true... Spent around $150 on ads when first starting out & got a couple hundred subs but they never came back & never even watched the video.... listen to him!

I ran ads too. I got a bunch of subs who don't watch my new videos. Watch time from ads is way lower too. I still have a $40 credit from TH-cam, so I'll have to run some more ads in the future.

Love the advice you give of focusing on finding yourself before going weekly. I've been super worried about that lately and it makes me sooooo anxious! But I wanna post stuff I'd watch myself so I take the time to make it as good as I can...

I've probably watched a total of like a hundred of your TH-cam and twitch advice videos trying to figure out what I want my channel to look like but I'm so glad I watched those first going into this one because I want to get such a solid game plan out before I even pull the trigger but the best advice I could have gotten was to not look for validation. Try and fail and try again. Thanks for everything you're doing for small time content creators man!
