  • I am super impressed with this no tune required JLT cold air intake for the 2020 GT500. Huge gains by simply bolting it on and no tune required! This 500 has 8000 miles and is running all stock on 93 octane on this HOT Indiana day.

    Unfortunately these gains are not sustained once you shut the hood, real world use, at least at stock boost levels. Justin from VMP proved it at the track, it is actually slower with the JLT. I suspect it introduces heat and it loses some efficacy of the ram air effect with it's kind of a seal foam edging. Which sucks because I really wanted it. If you remove the lid on the factory unit and dyno them back to back, you'll get very similar numbers (see svtperformance dyno). Close the hood with the JLT and dyno it again and those impressive gains no longer materialize. It was designed to be sealed by Ford for a reason, to keep out 100% of the engine bay heat and effectively use the ram air design in the grill. Ford engineers are pretty awesome these days, they have the money and resources to engineer and test these designs in all kinds of scenarios, not just a controlled environment like a dyno. It really is an awesome car out of the box. Nothing against JLT, they make stellar products which I do own, but this is super misleading information that has been proven by multiple sources not to hold up in use on a stock GT500. Pulley and port the blower and you may see advantages come into play, that's what I hope anyway ;-)

      Interesting thing here is I have consistently ran faster 60-130 times on the stock intaker with the lid removed and WITHOUT the rain shield. I have tested it half a dozen times and it is consistenly 0.3+ seconds quicker 60-130

      @@shiftlight314 is the JLT intake bigger than the stock intake? I was because I was thinking of doing the same thing but was wondering if the JLT intake provided more air flow.

      I wonder if this is also true with the rain tray installed, as that removes quite a bit of heat from undehood.

      I agree 100% Ford engineers are awesome and they tested this car in every which. Way to make it the best it could be.

      So tired of the close the hood crowd. It is like listening to a flat earther. It is a stupid test and really just a tuning tool. People act like this makes their car faster, having a better number...

    Would like to see the stock air box with the lid taken off hood open numbers. That would be the fair comparison. Using a open air box with the hood open on the JLT would automatically be a advantage compared to the stock closed air box.

      I ran my stock gt500 with an open airbox and have consistently pulled better 60-130 times than 3 other GT500's i know with the JLT.. food for thought on some local testing (in our real world experience)

    Its clear what we have learned in the past two years. These cold air kits need to be retested. I would like to see what the difference is with lid off stock box and use the same type of filter. I suspect the gains are from the high flow filter and not the kit as a whole

Any acreage with the filter? I have deposit ready. Filter pet friendly? I have two cats. Thanks for your consideration neighbors.

    Nice video. Thank you. Just picked up a new Gt500 and I’m super pumped to put this on. ?? How important is the catch can that came with my car to have on. I’ve got mixed reviews. Some say track use only and some say put it on. It sure I want to. Plus JLT has a cool one as well. But do I even need it. Gonna put 3,000 on the car a year ?

      I am always a fan of a catch can. Any oil you can keep out of the supercharger is a bonus. Oil degrades octane so keep it out.

    Not real world numbers. Hood open on a dyno. The stock intake with the cover off does similar numbers. Shut the hood on the street probably won’t get the same gains. I can tell it’s not a complete sealed unit. You can see hot air can get in on the right side. I bet if you used stock air box with a redesigned tube with a smooth transition instead of the accordion section the factory tube has it would do better that the JLT in real world driving

    • @shinobi9922
      @shinobi9922 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hood open is the standard because closed hood with a small fan in front of the car doesn't reproduce a 150+ mph wind that would be rushing into the car on the street.
      Also hot air under real world condition would have no chance of getting to the small gap that may be there on the right side of the box that you pointed out. The car has massive venting in the hood from which hot air would be venting out of and it has an air inlet pipe from the grille directly into the intake box. That inlet pipe makes it physically impossible for any hot engine air to get in to the intake area while the car is moving. Hot air would be pulled back and out of the vents. There is zero chance that air would move forward and around and into the box while a strong air flow was being forced into the intake box from the outside. It is not possible.

      @@shinobi9922 So my question is this: If you test the car with the lid on, where is it getting air from ? The car is standing still so no air flow. The JLT with the hood open and a open air box plus fans, I get where that air is coming from. I have read hat its the pressure. The stock box is restrictive, but yet Livernois that uses the OEM box and lid also claims 30HP. so something just seems off.

      Here is a very old post where JLT explains why dyno shops use hood up. Rather than type it all out I found this for easy reference. Has to do with on the dyno you are getting almost no air vs. driving down the road. Here you go.
