Watching this incredible dance number, it's so easy to see their one-of-a-kind chemistry and what made them the greatest movie dance team of all-time. And -- what great choreography by Fred and his genius co-choreographer, Hermes Pan, who never got the credit he deserved. The syncopation is pure heaven. And the fun they had doing this number!! You hear Fred loving it openly and Ginger giggling. They *knew* it was going well and enjoyed it immensely. A gift to us all!
All true, and you could see how great an actress she was, her lines flowed naturally and when it came time to dance there was no leaving the character behind, her expressions, mood transitions, everything. I love the way this starts out with the fun spirited tussle in the middle of the floor and then the loose limbed step into the beat. Of course the set up before that is great too. Fred had to keep up with her on the acting end and she stayed right there with him for the dance and if it was ever in doubt he would sweep her up and put her right where she needed to be. She hadn't tapped or danced with a partner before him, and he hadn't done any serious acting before her. Anything he lacked on the dramatic or comic end she would erase by turning his awkwardness into charm by simply worshiping him with her eyes or leading him with her lines. He the rhythm, she the timing. It was truly a match made in Hollywood heaven...back when there was one.
The Seeker I'm so glad someone else feels the same way. I absolutely love how you put it, that's exactly how I feel. They complemented each other so perfectly and so naturally that their names will forever be spoken as one. Your last sentence though, that hit me. Because it's so true. Powell, Cyd Charisse, Ann Miller, Rita Hayworth all could be spectacular ... but Ginger, like Astaire, expressed more than just rhythm and precision. She was sublime.
Ginger also dances with her face. Vera-Ellen would glue the same blank smile to her face the whole time she was dancing and never looked Fred in the eyes.
Baryshnikov once said he was terrified of fleeing to America, because he thought all Americans danced like Fred Astaire. It took quite a while before he realized that Astaire was a unique talent.
Ginger was the best partner Fred had. Even after days of practicing you can see the pure joy they had of dancing together. There is no play acting here, it is complete bliss. They will never be a dancing couple like them. And Ginger of course was absoloutely beautiful.
This is my favorite performance by them. Pure magic. She giggles spontaneously a few times, which is charming, especially given how much they rehearsed this - they seemed to be having a lot of fun.

this is fred and ginger loose and frenetic - something they didn't do often AND they are enjoying themselves. love the exclamations by both dancers throughout.
What a wonderful movie clip. Notice the way they both laugh while dancing and the acting doesn't stop when they begin to dance. This dance expresses the sheer joy they found in dancing with one another. Thank you.
This is really dancing together. It's not just great technique either. Ginger dances differently than Fred, yet they are still very much relating to each other through movement. F & G literally created the definition of what great dancing looks like, and it's very appealing. It brought millions to the dance halls, all over the USA.
I disagree with you on the point about her being more expressive. Fred is clearly more expressive with his whole body in ways that Ginger is not. And it flows more naturally from him even though we all know he rehearsed like crazy to make sure every movement appeared effortless. An abbreviated movement wouldn't make her more expressive. As a matter of fact, I would think it had the exact opposite effect.

If ever two people were made for each other (other than my 2nd wife & I) it has to be Fred & Ginger. The most perfect dancing pair that ever was or ever will be.
Fred had some great dancing partners in his career. I especially love Ginger being his partner. They were fantastic together. Good times from a wonderful era
Both of them had great personalities which added to their style and grace, elegance, sense of fun and their limitless talent… It all adds up to a joy to watch!
I saw a documentary about Fred and Ginger in 1995 on the BBC, shortly after Ginger passed away. In that documentary, which I have still have on VHS, the commentator stated how this clip was filmed in one take, the WHOLE dance. They had worked so hard in rehearsals they enjoyed the take, hence Ginger's laughter which the director decided to keep in. Class acts these fine pair of hoofers!
I love how playfully flirty they are in this bit, especially at the end of the dialogue portion when Ginger goes to slap at Fred and he grabs her wrists (:58), and they smile at each other It all seems so spontaneous; their smiles so real. Of course, I know they were in character and it was probably very well rehearsed. But they really seemed to be enjoying themselves here.
there exists a theory that they were deeply in love- Astair's wife hated her ( and his wife was the opposite of Ginger in every kind of way) some people who worked with them (during filming) talked about how they would disappear for hours :-)
I used to watch these Fred and Ginger when I was a young kid..and now I still marvel at their performances..I heard that Fred practiced till it was perfect and even then practiced more..he expected the same from whom he was dancing with too...amazing!
I grew up watching Fred and Ginger movies. The movies were so beautiful and always made me smile! These movies will never get old to me. It's too bad we don't have entertainers and movies like this anymore. During this time most actors could sing, dance, and act.
Yep l did as well. My sister and l would go every single Saturday afternoon to see every black and white musical we could, we collected the clothes. Then Saturday we would dress up, catch the local bus to see these beautiful films dressed in the 1930s or 40s clothes. People looked at us as thought we were odd, well yes we were odd, born in a different time we would have lifted in. Age has caught up, the clothes have gone but the fun memories havent.
You know I love them both and I know people say everyone used to be mesmerised by Fred and his dancing, sure enough he was brillaint, but I can never take my eyes off of Ginger. Such an elegant, beautiful Lady and an amazing mover! She really was all that is best about female beauty and grace, personified!

Keep in mind that the tap sounds you hear are not made by the dancers. Those are sounds made by people sitting town and holding the tap shoes in their hands making the appropriate sounds. I am an old tap dancer from there 60’s and the sounds do not match up with the way their feet are moving.

Ginger and Fred's dancing talent was absolutely absurd. The 30's and 40's had unparalleled talent. Nowadays almost a hundred years later, no one has ever come close to the talent of these two. It was a really fantastic deal.
what a joy to watch this elegance, rhythm and beauty, on contrast to the current declined culture that we call (falsely) civilization. Thank you for posting these jewels of Ginger Rodgers and Fred Astaire 🙏🏽😇🙏🏽😇

Just the epitomy of elegance and style!!! Excellent dancing ,beautiful clothes, that can be worn even in our days. This is dancing, two great talents and to think that these filmes were made in the thirties, this particular one in 1935!
My Uncle, William DeSilva, who is now 91, toured with Ginger in the later '50's and also danced with Marlene Dietrich, Dorothy Lamour, Chita Rivera, and Abbe Lane. Knowing him has given me a much greater appreciation of Hollywood's Golden Years ...
The really really amazing thing is how fun they make it look, and how much it looks like they are just improvising and having a good time ... when actually every single movement is rehearsed. That is great acting while dancing!
Thanks for posting this including the dialogue at the beginning. A wonderful routine. I just watched it with a big smile on my face, you can't help being swept along by the verve and fun. And Ginger at her most gorgeous! Five stars.
I can never get tired of watching these two! 😍😍🥰🥰❤️❤️👍 This looks so natural as it's some rehersal ,some behind the scene thing. You know actors enjoying some time before the real shoot starts.
Great upload - thanks - what a lot of people don't realise is that Fred wanted his dance scenes all in one take - and they were flawless - Ginger Rogers would often, dancing in heels, have raw and bleeding feet and still manage to look effortless. He was a perfectionist but Fred was also perfect. As was Ginger. Lovely to watch - I might be from a younger generation or two but this is timeless and wonderful
The amazing thing is, I just watched an RKO documentary, and this entire scene, the taps and music, was done live. Listen closely and you can even hear Ginger laughing at one point.
Dang....There’s actually someone who can keep up with Fred! 😝And she does it in heels! Respect! 😘Also, they seem to be genuinely enjoy it! 😍What a pair....Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers will be eternal great pairing! 👍
has anyone noticed at 1:04 Ginger gave Fred a 'annoyed' pouty look? So cute! I love how everything here is so candid! The giggles and little shouts they both give are TOOO adorable!!!
Absolutely marvellous. I love the dancing. So graceful and energetic. The pianist was wonderful too. Had a Harlem feel to it and went really well with the dancing
Just like to point out something about Ginger, for whom I think this number is really a showcase: notice that she doesn't just dance; she's acting while she's dancing. Who knows how many takes they had done prior to this one, yet you can believe from her expressions that she's doing it for the first time, and enjoying every second. THAT'S how you sell a number!
according to Ginger's biography this is the only time they danced on a hardwood floor....and the laughs were real... certainly one of their best films...
I thought I had seen almost all of Fred and Ginger's routines, but can't recall ever seeing this one before now. I absolutely love it! I like the little giggles and the fun they really seem to be having....and of course the dancing is just so spectacular and perfect as usual! Thanks for uploading this.
Hours, days, weeks(?) of rehearsal led to something that looks completely spontaneous! At 0:41 notice Fred's foot in motion; the man couldn't stop dancing even when he was standing still. And beautiful Ginger smiling with delight throughout the dance, looking like she was really having fun. As many have observed, what made her so special is that she continued to act while she danced. edgefire125, thanks for posting!
I remember as a young country boy seeing this on TV and marveled at the moves and grace...I had no idea what dancing was until I saw Fred and Ginger...

Fred Astaire made dancing look as natural as breathing. There have been some great dancers, but no one ever moved so smooth or perfect as him.

Ginger's magic is that she held her own personality with Astaire. The mark of a top performer . The scenery just melts away.

It still amazes me that Ginger never had a dancing lesson in her life! That is just one incredible woman !
Except of course, for Fred (and Hermes!) training her for 19 years, six of them intensely. Thank goodness!

Pure perfection and sheer joy from start to fininsh.
God bless these two forever.
Thanks for posting this including the dialogue at the beginning. A wonderful routine. I just watched it with a big smile on my face, you can't help being swept along by the verve and fun. And Ginger at her most gorgeous! Five stars.
I live Astaire and Rogers together, such a sense of fun and innocence, pure joy!
One of those scenes so wholesome it just lifts u up!
They were a match made in dance heaven. ❤
My friend and his wife learned this routine for their anniversary. It was so cute.
I wish more movies had talented people like Fred and Ginger.
Listen closely and you can even hear Ginger laughing at one point.
brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!!
No matter what, this always makes me smile. So I keep coming back. to have my spirits lifted.
Dang....There’s actually someone who can keep up with Fred! 😝And she does it in heels! Respect! 😘Also, they seem to be genuinely enjoy it! 😍What a pair....Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers will be eternal great pairing! 👍
So relaxed when they dance they make it look effortless 🙂
their dancing was the best still used by others
has anyone noticed at 1:04 Ginger gave Fred a 'annoyed' pouty look? So cute! I love how everything here is so candid! The giggles and little shouts they both give are TOOO adorable!!!
Absolutely marvellous. I love the dancing. So graceful and energetic. The pianist was wonderful too. Had a Harlem feel to it and went really well with the dancing
made me smile the whole way through. this has made me want to go out and learn how to dance like that!
Fabulous and love Ginger's outfit.
One of my favorite of their perfect dance numbers from their RKO movies
i just love how much fun they're having, it's so great!
according to Ginger's biography this is the only time they danced on a hardwood floor....and the laughs were real... certainly one of their best films...
I thought I had seen almost all of Fred and Ginger's routines, but can't recall ever seeing this one before now. I absolutely love it! I like the little giggles and the fun they really seem to be having....and of course the dancing is just so spectacular and perfect as usual! Thanks for uploading this.
No humping, bumping, grinding, twerking - just talent. Thanks!
Thier both just so light on thier feet it's breathtaking, i mean how could anyone not enjoy this, it's truly dancing at it's best.
All that in one take - fantastic!!
I remember as a young country boy seeing this on TV and marveled at the moves and grace...I had no idea what dancing was until I saw Fred and Ginger...
Ginger just falls into his arms never missing a beat! Incredible the two of them were..thank you for posting this. I never get tired of watching and listening to them!
