      He was a good singer, but it was elevated by his acting ability. Like, someone might think Sinatra sings the best version of The Way You Look Tonight, but it will never carry the same emotion as the original from Astaire, since it is inherently tied to a well-written love story. His songs are not just sung; they are sung *by* a character.

    As a kid I use to wait for Saturday night when I could stay up and watch TV late into the evening. Back in those days (I know that sounds corny but I'm 75 now) back in New York we had "The Late Show" and "The Million Dollar Movie" all in glorious black and white. Aside from all the great "film Noir", Fred and Ginger's movies were my favorites.

      Yes, I am older too, and greatly appreciate your comment. Life was simpler when we had but three or four channels to choose from (counting PBS). The late night movies were the best - I loved those black and white "pictures." The only frustrating thing for me was that I often fell asleep in the middle of the film - as I was not used to being up so late. I would wonder (the next day) as to how the story turned out - eventually, I would see the entire film and found out. ;-) Cheers and thanks!

    • @robotboy719
      @robotboy719 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That's the famous line. Ginger was a solid dancer no doubt but really not in the same league as Fred. No shame in that: few were. Baryshnikov studied his technique fanatically and said that Astaire was the greatest male dancer of the 20th Century. Not just the greatest tap dancer, the greatest dancer, period.

    • @rareimer
      @rareimer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      A couple of points have to be made here. One is that Astaire did more dancing in their films than Rogers--he always had multiple solo dances in each film, whereas she had only two solos in the whole series (and his were more elaborate than hers). The other is that he actively collaborated with Hermes Pan in creating the choreography, whereas she showed up and danced the steps she was given. Basically, Astaire was primarily a dancer who could also sing and act, Rogers was primarily an actress and singer who could also dance.

    • @robotboy719
      @robotboy719 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly, although you could add 'choreographer' to 'dancer' for Astaire. Rogers is an excellent dancer; Astaire is a brilliant one.

    • @adorabell4253
      @adorabell4253 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Even in this number we can see the difference in their dancing, Astair is open and fluid while Rogers, while giving a good performance, is a lot more drawn in and focused on getting it done. On the other hand her acting is a lot more natural than his. It makes sense when you remember that she was a full actress first and everything else seconds while he was a state dancer first (originally finding fame as a dance duo with his sister) and everything else second.

And I guess you can parse accents in fine detail, and insist that there is not an English accent - that instead there are many very different accents within England - Cockney, Estuary, Yorkshire, Scouse, Geordie, and on and on. By the way - the words in question i.e. tomato and potato - would the second vowel in these words be pronounced substantially different in any one of the different British accents? While I go for this and that.
    Goodness knows what the end will be;
    Oh, I don't know where I'm at...
    It looks as if we two will never be one,
    Something must be done.
    You say either and I say eyether,
    You say neether and I say nyther;
    Eether, eyether, neether, nyther,
    Let's call the whole thing off!
    You like potato and I like potahto,
    You like tomato and I like tomahto;
    Potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto!
    Let's call the whole thing off!
    But oh! If we call the whole thing off,
    Then we must part.
    And oh! If we ever part,
    Then that might break my heart!
    So, if you like pajamas and I like pajahmas,
    I'll wear pajamas and give up pajahmas.
    For we know we need each other,
    So we better call the calling off off.
    Let's call the whole thing off!
    You say laughter and I say lawfter,
    You say after and I say awfter;
    Laughter, lawfter, after, awfter,
    Let's call the whole thing off!
    You like vanilla and I like vanella,
    You eat banana and I eat banahna;
    Vanilla, vanella, banana, banahna!
    Let's call the whole thing off!
    But oh! If we call the whole thing off,
    Then we must part.
    And oh! If we ever part,
    Then that might break my heart!
    So, if you like oysters and I like ersters
    I'll take oysters and give up ersters.
    For we know we need each other,
    So we better call the calling off off!
    Let's call the whole thing off!

    The notes from Fred Astaire’s first Hollywood screen test: “Can’t sing. Can’t act. Balding. Can dance a little.”
    (Urban legend. Can’t verify if it’s true or not, but it’s still funny to read.)

    One thought leads to another. I'd heard the song many times before, but I searched for it today because I'd been reading an article on tomatoes.
    Predictable thumbs up, if you go searching for a Fred and Ginger clip then you probably already love them. The few thumbs down must be from people who just stumbled across this and didn't know what to make of it.

    Clever lyrics, and leave it to those two to tap dance in roller skates. Love it.
    It's mighty convenient that the rink is entirely empty when they start the dance routine. 😊

    Be aware of the fact that these roller skates are steel wheels attached to a frame that grips the sides of street shoes and held on by leather straps. This is old school skating and Rogers and Astaire are doing dance moves that outshine anyone else with them.
