There is something indefinable and mesmerizing about Fred and Ginger dancing. Unbelievable talent. Perfection. The music, the Art Deco sets and their on-screen chemistry make all of their scenes things of pure beauty.
Fred Astaire was pure perfection! He had elegance, class and was appealing in every way. Ginger was his best partner. How I miss this quality of movie!
All of their movies remind me of my mom. We used to watch all of them whenever they were on TV...Just fantastic dancing, backgrounds, etc. Fred and Ginger were beyond magical together.
@@19gregske55 sorry Gregory. you may be right that this scene inspired the other - but i'll never forget how much i hated that sappy song that Julie Andrews sang. it wasn't in the broadway production. why they added it to the movie was beyond me.
The lightning bolt that appears at 2:55 first appeared in Universal's "Bride of Frankenstein" just a few months earlier. It became a ubiquitous stock shot that has appeared in countless films. I saw it most recently in the season finale of "She Hulk: Attorney at Law"
Pan's and Astaire's belief that dance numbers should flow easily out of the storyline extended to making Fred look as if he is thinking out a routine immediately before going into it. Here he is ambling jauntily round the bandstand, hands in pockets, stroking his chin thoughtfully (perversely drawing attention to what moguls feared was his worst feature) and deliberately breaking the golden rule by srudying his feet as he tries a step. He, or Michael Kidd as dance director, used the same preamble in 'Dancing in the Dark' with Cyd Charisse, also set in a deserted public park. Cyd initiates the improv, and it develops into a very different version of the 'breaking through with the love object' stage of a romance. But the pretense of spontaneity is similar, and charming.
@@MareShoop She had the most beautiful legs. She was stunning in every way. I love her in Swing Time. She was thin but Athletic. Discovering Fred and Ginger during our dark pandemic and political storm: the Thunderstorm is a beautiful integration of witty dialogue, great music with clever lyrics, Fred's whimsical singing, then great choreography danced by Fred and the beautiful Ginger Rodgers. This is one of my favorite Fred and Ginger collaborations.
Though perhaps an overused term ... what comes to my mind this morning is the Fred and Ginger were 'poetry in motion'. Graceful, smooth, fluid. I am happy that you enjoyed ☺
Fred Astaire was a perfectionist when it came to dancing and he expected no less from his partner, it didn’t matter who she was! I didn’t know he had so many famous ladies dancing with him. I thought his only partner was Ginger Rogers. They were great together!
The most highly skilled dance partners Astaire had were Rita Hayworth and Eleanor Powell. When he dances with Hayward, you sense his pleasure in being matched with someone who was a trained dancer from an early age; with Powell, you sense that her unstoppable fund of energy pushes him almost to his limit! Both highly enjoyable partnerships to watch... but with Rogers, they were always two human beings who carried their characters' relationship from spoken dialogue through song and into dance. This was true both in their romantic numbers and in their comedy ones. A unique chemistry, so cherishable.
As good a dancer as Ginger Rogers was, I always sensed that she was thinking about her moves whereas with Fred Astaire he made it seem as natural as breathing.
Remember that Astaire essentially made just two movies a year - developing the score for each film with the composer and planning the choreography with Hermes Pan - whereas Rogers was a big star who was very busy appearing in non-singing, non-dancing dramas and comedies as well. Hermes Pan would teach her the moves for the Astaire films - "with Fred I'd be Ginger and with Ginger I'd be Fred" - so although their numbers were built around her strengths, Astaire's part was actually made ON him.
Splendid DUO, he and she, forever couple. When will we have again such artists of that kind in 21th century, dancing and taping that way and that original kind? Where are yu all of your kind gone? COME BACK! WE NEED YOU SO MUCH! PLEASE COME BACK TO US! Emmanuel from Paris
Heaven when they danced. A lot of perfect down-to-earth concept/choreography, then rehearsal to perfection, for the greatest expression in movement ever filmed. And timely. Just what the Great Depression needed. Humbly.
there has been many great dancers but i mean know man black or white could touch fred astaire dancing with a woman. particular ballroom dancing the 1930s n1940s was the best area of dancing along with the lindy hop.
The way is shown how to express in perfect movement, timing, choreography human romantic feelings forevermore to be the standard milestone that left all the past behind, followed by Disney, international ballet, stage and film. Physically perfect to go airborn, artistically unencumbered, committed to seven weeks hard rehearsal, genius concepts of Astaire and Hermes Pan, and lucky the depressing '30s gobbled the uncommon dreams to escape what each day of the Depression dragged down.
Raoul Bataller and without that amazing music, where would they be? Perfection when they’re all synchronised together! This is the best and cannot be matched. Thank you for these clips!
