I used this video to completely clean/repaste my Series X after it was overheating. I love how he shows you which screws to put back on re-assembly. Made it a lot easier.
Just wanted to say thanks for this detailed guide , today after a heavy session on assetto Corsa I noticed the fans amped up alot , it's currently 32c here in the UK and felt after two years and a bit it was time to open up my series X , even though it was clean as a whistle inside as I use my system lying down and keep it clean from dust that's seemed to help loads . But when taking it apart I noticed the themal application was 1 rubbish and two hard as a brick . Followed your guide and replaced it with thermal grizzly Kryonaught and it's quite than day one of owning it . Alot easier than I expected to be fair . Very good guide for anyone trying the same process , I salute you good sir and many thanks for you time and efforts .
Hey bro you saved me $300 that microsoft support wanted to fix my over heating and shutting off XSX, the thermal paste was 100% dry and almost non on the chip and it was all leaked out, my xbox is back to its former glory repasted and its all thanks to you and your precise guide, i fixed it with zero damage to the console, 10/10 guide
xbox was sounding like an airplane, had it since it was released. i didnt go all the way to thermal paste this time but wanted to a detailed enough cleaning of dust. it was very bad, literally created a small hill of dirt on my table. all back together, cleaned and playing videogames in silence, fan exhaling heat perfectly. thank you so much for this and now i have tools to use for other electronics that ive needed
60 seconds in and I can already tell this is a good guide. I'll save this for later and add all those things to my "Save for later" list and come back to it once I've gotten everything over the next month or two
I've killed two series X's, not having a clue how or why. Then I found your video. I've learned, living in a very dusty town and having dogs I needed to clean it once a month at the least. But what I discovered is, if you lay it on its side, like the old Xboxes, the dust and hair doesn't collect in the heat sync. I turned it over after my last cleaning, just to see if it made any difference. So after about 4 months I decided to open it up and check on it. It had dust everywhere but that's because of where I live. But the heat sync was completely clear of dirt and hair. So I highly recommend, any one who watches this or reads this to turn your series X on its side.
After four years, I finally need to change my thermal paste immediately. It all started this summer when the fan got noticeably loud. Now, whenever I start Stalker 2, as soon as I load a save and begin playing, the fan kicks in at maximum intensity, like it's in full-on radiation mode! xD Thank you so much for this tutorial! My Series X is starting a new life now ;)
I own the Series X since day one so it logically starts to heat up a little more. I will clean it and replace the thermal paste with this simple, clear and effective tutorial. thanks dude 👍
I literally just did this, have had my Xbox since launch, my fan and Xbox itself are so much COOLER. Was kinda skeptical bout doin this cuz I’m not a big tech guy, but holy hell was it easy and worked very well lol
The design of this one is crazy The fact that they machined a block for this one to mount to instead of using the regular sheet Metal shell is crazy, i dont think any other console or computer has done that
Finally, a video with a good enough camera so I see how to take out the small ribbon cable, every other video just says push on it but doesn't mention the metal piece.
Cheers buddy, decent strip down. Just re-pasted my processor and this video worked a treat. My only gripe would be to mention that when splitting the heatsink from the PCB, be careful and use a plastic prying tool becauae mine was stuck. Microsoft's quality control on pasting the processor is awful.
Ok I see the 2 stickers on the back of my console. The one in the middle I took off easily but the one at the bottom is plastic and not a sticker. I can see on the video (1:11) that you peeling off 2 stickers but on my console it's plastic at the bottom so I'm confused.
This guide was FANTASTIC. I only did the disassembly to clean all the dust out and put it back together, but your guide was so detailed that it has given me full confidence that I can take the whole interior apart to replace the thermal paste. So round 2 of cracking this baby open will be coming soon. 🤘
I bought my unit 2 and a half years ago. It was starting to ramp up its fans where it never did before. Followed your guide and replaced the paste for some artic cooler mx4. It runs quiet as factory new. Thank you
Hope i can see the upgrade to 2TB M.2 SSD at the same time. The out-of-box 1TB is entry level DRAMless one. I am afriad it's a QLC SSD. Any idea to upgrade to high quality TLC compatible SSD?
The removal of the classic x clamp makes me believe Xbox is getting more akin to the idea of people fixing and cleaning their own consoles. I have both this and PS5 and it takes me like 20 minutes to clean everything on the Xbox except the thermal paste, but that wouldn't have taken much longer. PS5 you basically have to disassemble the entire console to clean the heatsink. Being able to clean it from the same side as the fan/SSD wouldve really been special. Hopefully the Pro fixes it.
@DagAmaRamaGaming Damn....I still haven't done it. This is why my wife left me lol. Don't you guys give up on me too!? Was thinking of using the graphite pads? Heard good things. I'll let you know in 10 months when I still havnt done it. 🫠=My Xbox........and marriage.
The much easier way, is to get two cotton ear buds, cut one ends of both. Then tape them together strongly but thinly, then carefully poke through the holes with the long earbud at the rear bottom of the console, to clean out the dust from the heatsink. Little shake and then hoover does the trick! My Series X went from a loud hoover to a quite console again, without having to open it up or void a warranty.
Do you have to replace the thermal paste or is this guy just doing it for his? Mine is not that dirty at all but when come time to clean it. All I wanna do is vacuum the fan out.
You don't have to change the thermal paste if you only need to clean the dust. This video instruction shows the replacement process for information on how to do it, but it is not necessary.
Those two stickers looked like new after being replaced. One thing that makes me nervous is that heat shield where you need to bend the tabs. The screw locations make me want to try this. My Xbox is 4 years old, I should at least dust inside there.
I thought it would be harder to remove everything from the chasis. There’s only a couple of screws seems fairly simple. I can easily just blow compressed air and call it a day but I want to see the insides
I tried following along with this video cleaning my system but I ended up breaking a few cords and lost like 3 screws I can't even get it all back today it sucks because I just bought my console about 7 Months ago really wasn't even that dirty in the first place microwave told me I voided my warrant so I'm bummed out

I now own an Xbox series x and before watching this video I was considering cleaning it every now and again lucky I ran into this video now I know how to disassemble the series x without damaging it
For some reason, the middle screw of the fan is so incredibly tight compared to the other screws. It’s impossible to even loosen the screw, I’ve been trying to over 30 minutes to get that 1 screw off. And I broke one of the cables because my torx screwdriver snapped.
For future reference if anyone sees this and they spilled a small amount of chocolate milk in their Xbox, do this its really easy to clean the least you could do is pop open the back and pull the fan out and wipe it down. Nice video!
Mine is completely clogged with dust after 8 months of nearly every day use but I just don’t want to take it apart yet it definitely doesn’t run as cold as it used to but it’s still quiet and doesn’t shut down so I think I’ll leave it until the warranty runs out 😁
@@patrickrodriguez9153just did that after 2 years now as it started to thermal throttle on black ops 6 still haven’t taken it apart used a can of compressed air and hoover
Get off work at 5. Turn on Xbox when I’m ready to game. Fan stops, system gives overheat warning. Find this video, disassemble (fan portion only), clean out console and fan, back online before 6. Thanks bro!
The design of Xbox is simply amazing. I did a deep cleaning on my PS5 and I’m disappointed at how Sony designed this console. Microsoft put effort into this machine and it shows.
That bottom screw sticker doesn’t come off for me lol my Xbox is down it keeps shutting off has been cleaned and all just moving on to PS then can’t fix it 😂
Great video. Was able to put new thermal paste on after my Xbox kept shutting off randomly while playing some more graphical heavy games. Last ditch effort after trying many other things. Unfortunately it didn’t fix my issue, still shuts off, but it’s very clean & has new thermal paste. 😅
The only problem is that your x clamp or whatever it’s called is not orientated properly. You have the black risers tightened down over components. The black circles are orientated left and right when they should be at the top/bottom. Around 14:00. Again, those black circles are not supposed to be position west/east, but rather north and south. Look at what you’re tightening them down on in the video.
Getting to the point where I'm considering changing the thermal paste. Is it necessary to spread? Some videos I see the tech spread it around and other videos they just sandwich it.
Thanks for the video! I replaced the thermal paste but it didn't help. My Xbox automatically shuts down because of heating. Any suggestions how to repair it? The fan works well.
@@midget8857 no, it shutdowns automatically to prevent heating up. Gor example in Hogwards Legacy or Fifa 22. Fifa 23 works better, at least does not shutting down.

I've knackered my power switch cable (the soldered bit) xbox works with being turned on by controller 😅 used another guide up until I broke it 😭 Is this a cheap fix?
I'm a bit stuck getting the fan out. I've got the two side screws out but the big middle one isn't turning and I'm worried about shearing the screw. I've tried pliers to turn it and nothings working ☹️
I recommend that you do not use pliers or tweezers. Buy a torx 8 screwdriver with T-shaped body for better grip. I used to have that same problem until I used that screwdriver for a better grip
@@OSITO-xm7gl I do have the T8 screwdriver specifically for xbox. It's just the fan screw is soo tight! I'm not sure about the brand type. I'll have a look though, thank you.
@@kwilson3514 It's a type that in the part where it's attached is shaped like the letter T and gives you a better grip to remove those screws that are so small and tight. The brand can be anyone's. I wish you luck with👌🏻
You can try and clean it first with compressed air. If it doesn't help, then yeah I think it's the termal paste. Microsoft is not using the highest quality paste, so it dries out quickly.
They sell magnetic screens on amazon that go over the top and the two spots on the back. They literally stop all dog hair from getting inside the xbox and they dont cause any airflow or overheating issue i paid somewhere around $10 or $15 for it.
Thank god for this video. Fresh from refurbished gamestop series x. Every 30 minutes it overheated and shut off. Took the damn thing apart, half the screws were stripped and had to be removed with insant bond epoxy so i mold the damn torque bit for a new screw head, no dust inside, but when I got to the thermal paste? Fuckin chip wae basically clean. All the paste had been shoved to the sides and had become so dry i had to softly chisel it off with a plastic wedge
This is exactly how mine was when I opened it… paste all over the sides and literally powder on the chip. It’s like they got Stevie Wonder working at the factory.

The construction of this console is just incredible. The Microsoft engineers that worked on it should be extremely proud of the final product.
Except for the fact that they put the intake on the base of the system. That’s genuinely stupid design.

I wish you luck with👌🏻
Sir you have saved me 250 quid, this is a fantastic guide.
Thank you! this made it so much easier having such a detailed guide. ❤
I followed all the steps and now my disc drive won't recognise discs.. Can anyone help please?
Dude can you please tell me the name of all this stuff that you use in this video
I had my Xbox for 6 months and it’s already overheating, do you think it’s the thermal paste.
Very detailed and amazing but those clamps will break over time
Which clamps?
Same with mine!
Would there be any reason the fan doesn’t turn back on? I just did a clean on the housing didn’t replace the other stuff .
The thermal pads aren't available on Amazon.. any reccomendations.
