Awesome job. I have a 70 F100 sitting in the garage that my wife gave me as a Christmas gift. I have started some body work on it and have sourced a new engine but I really need to get my butt in gear and get some work done to it. I wish I had access to a junk yard to purchase parts from. For some reason they have all crushed everything and closed up shop in my area. I just need to bite the bullet and make the 6 hour drive to the closest pick a part and make a weekend out of it.
After watching your videos I finally got my butt in gear (the warmer 40 degree weather helped also). I'm picking up a crown vic front end 7 hrs away next week and I found a rear end out of an explorer that will be delivered (the guy is going to bring the whole vehicle on his wrecker to my house so I can pull it) locally this weekend for $50.00. Engine should be ready for me to pickup in the next couple of weeks. Still looking for a C6 transmission. Thanks for posting your video's.
Good job! I built a '72 prostreet back in the 80's. I narrowed my 9' ten inches and used a triangulated 4 link with coil overs. I didnt have to cut my frame and put a 31x16.5x15 mickey on 15x14 dragstar wheels. I had enough clearance between the tire/frame, tire/fender but did have to cut out my wheel well to the frame. Mine didnt sit in the weeds like yours did but I also didnt have much option at the time to lower the front. I only had 3" drop I-beams on the front. It sat nicely but still drove like a '72. I am a subscriber because you are building the same truck that I built (even though I started before you I am not done with mine.) For the rear end, since the Explorer rear is so much more narrow than the CV front track, I went with spacers on the rear. I am also running 2016 Mustang GT 18s all around. BTW, you are doing a great job.
Love the truck!! I did a c notch on a full size truck and it developed a very annoying harmonic vibration to the rear end. It was super annoying and drove me crazy until I finally figured out what was causing it. It felt like a tire was out of balance but would happen at very low speeds. Learned that these c notch kits are not rigid enough. The prob is with the rear spring perch mounts being behind the notch it tends to flex just enough to feel it as you drive. Solution was a short loop to reinforce the frame but unfortunately it has to take up some space in the bed. Anyhow hopefully yours drives good without this problem and you can avoid the mysterious harmonic vibration 🙂
Looking good! I love the budget build you are doing! Try ranger wheels they will have less offset and 15 inch wheels will clear those brakes. I believe mustang wheels have less offst then crown vic specifically 94-04 but ranger is probably best. I can't wait for the crown Vic front swap ! This truck is turning out awesome!

The 8.8 is a decently strong axle not exactly 9" but can take decent abuse, I have yet to kill my 8.8 in my 90, I have upgraded to a LSD, aluminum cover with main cap supports and removed all the bearings and seals and replaced. They say you can weld the axle tubes to the center section to give it more strength, also that explorer 8.8 should be a 3.73 with disc brakes so a bit of an upgrade as well. I've done the same thing with my 69 F100. I started with the leaf springs and ended up putting a AirSlamIt four link. Crown Vic on the front. I cut the tubs out of my bed since the floor needs to be redone anyways but you'll have clearance with wheel spacers. I think I bough 2.5" spacers. Not ideal for long term but they do the job until I get away from my mustang wheels so something like that may be a temporary solution for you for now.

Several months late, but for anyone else with the wheel space issue, could try a set of wheels from a Panther (crown vic/grandmarquis/towncar) made in 2002 or before. they have a different offset but the same bolt pattern. They made the axle wider in the 03 model to match the wider front end needed to fit the rack on 03+ models, and in turn made the wheels sit really deep to try to keep the same over all width wheel to wheel. TLDR pre 2003 model Panther wheels have like 2 inches more clearance.
Was just going to ask this. 9" is superior to the 8.8 although the 8.8 is very good. I also know first hand it's a pain in the ass to do a gear change on vs a 9".
Easiest way to get rear disk, choice of rear ratio, 5x4.5 bolt pattern. He spent $75. It will match the bolt pattern of the crown vic front swap. He will not even come close to the power handling capability of the 8.8 much less the 9in. So he isn't losing anything.

If you didn’t do the 4 link what other options do you have for shocks? Can the stock explorer shock mount still be used with the stock f100 frame shock mounts?
yeah, you can leave the stock spring mounts/ spring hangers on the explorer rear-end and use them with the F100 upper shock mounts. Or upper shock mounts are pretty inexpensive, you could add a couple new ones to the F100 frame.
doesn't one side of the 8.8 have a longer tube than the other side? is the differential centered on your truck. I've seen some 8.8 swaps on cars where one of the axle tubes has to be cut to match the other side and to center the differential.

Great vids. What did you use for shock mounts and shocks? The explorer bottom mounts don't appear to line up with the factory F100 mounts on the frame. Thanks!!
haha just for that reason, I didn't want to cut the bed floor out of this truck. If I decide its not low enough when its all together... I may go back and do a step notch.
Incredible watching transformation of this truck. Can't stop watching the videos. Curious if you put the old floor mat back in. If not would you consider selling it? lmk
I admire the effort. However, I would think that the structural integrity of the chassis is severely compromised, even with the plates welded on. The welding itself creates stress concentrations, which are more likely to fail due to fatigue over time. Might work only if the frame is over-designed to begin with, and not used for carrying actual loads after the customisation.
The Explorer is to narrow for a full size truck, you should probably use an F150 axle, I have Explorer axles on my Bronco II and they fit that perfectly!
I just got an identical one for my '72. What did you do for the yoke? I saw a couple different sizes for jeep swaps but dont know witch is the right one for the f100 can anyone help me out?
I've heard the later Crown Vics have low offset wheels, and the older (pre-03, IIRC) ones might fit better. But I'm not a Ford guy, so I can't verify IRL.
The older ones have a narrower rearend the wheels are closer to being centered offset. The newer ones have a super wide axle and positive offset 16" (2 designs). The last wheel update are 17"s.
Better gear ratio than what he had, made lowering the rear easier, not much weaker in strength when comparing stock equipment, and he also gained the ability to run a much cooler looking deep dish wheel. Though he obviously didn't consider that
@@edjackson4389 I considered the cooler wheel!... just haven't ordered them yet haha! I didn't want the truck stuck on jack stands and thought the cheap crown vic wheel would at least let it roll around

Not when it’s reinforced with 1/32” steel plating…. On both sides! I’m not an engineer, but I can’t see the notch kit effectively replacing the integrity of that quite large chunk of missing, structural steel frame.
I bought some cheap 2 inch wheel spacers off ebay for right now. Just to make the crown vic wheels work. The truck is not running and just needs to roll around the shop. I think some aftermarket wheels should solve the problem.
If going for the Crown Vic front end and want the matching bolt pattern, could try a set of wheels off a Panther(crown vic/grand marquis/town car) made in 2002 or before. same bolt pattern, but they have about 2 inches more (less?) back space.
The cost. The 8.8 comes out of the junkyard with 3.73 gears, limited slip, disc brakes for $75 bucks. To set up a 9" like that would be close to 1000 dollars. Also I'm doing a crown vic front end... so now the bolt patterns will match

Sport trac through 2005 would be 8.8 axles along with explorer sports axle tag will have 3L73 or 3.73 denoting gear ratio and an 8.8 will be nearby telling you its an 8.8 a simple google search can give you axle codes for rangers and explorers to tell you your axle ratio and whether or not its a locker.
Great work!!! Did you do anything with the center section being offset, or is it okay to leave it?
Plenty of room under the trucks to leave it offset. The cars can give you an issue with the center section hitting the body.
just band the rear wheels and make your own offset to suit the truck unless your going for a different type of wheel then you will have to got for the same offset and or a spacer depending
I just picked up those wheels at the junkyard because they were dirt cheap and would let the truck be a roller still. I planned to go with a custom wheel in the coming weeks.
@@330_garage3 i thought you were keeping the whole patina look and stock steels but a nice custom set of one off wheels will really make this truck. Fantastic video as always and full of great knowledge 👍👍
Why remove a 9" rear end for something built weaker.? So many after market stuff for the 9" also. Good luck.
What type welding machine were you using ? It was wire feed but it had some thick beads ...
I am using a Lincoln Power Mig 210MP. It seems to lay down a thicker bead than I prefer sometimes. I continue to mess with the settings to try to get it dialed in a little better.
@@330_garage3
I see lincoln top nothchy ....
Inna few weeks I'm going to do a c notch when you disconnected the E brake to remove the axle did you take it off from the nuts on the cable ?? Looked like thats how you did it ...
@@TheThirdWheel618 yep, good question, it was easiest to loosen the cables where they connect (under the rear of the cab), disconnect them there, and pull the axle out with the cables connected.
@@330_garage3
Ok got it that's seems easier since I have a 250 anything I do to remove the drum I need to slightly pull axle shaft out not the best idea .
Love the vids thanks for the reply .
because it is just as strong as 9in and hes going to the crown vic swap its the same bolt pattern as the 8.8
AND it was $75 for a complete rear end with calipers, discs and lines. Rear disc conversion kit for 9" is $350. Traction lock carrier is another $275.
@@chucksgarage7165 makes sense
At min 9:20 is when it all went wrong. He spends the next couple of mins correcting the frame twisting by trimming.
Great vids. What did you use for shock mounts and shocks? The explorer bottom mounts don't appear to line up with the factory F100 mounts on the frame. Thanks!!
Why a c notch rather than a step notch? (I know with a step notch you would have had to modify the bed too).
haha just for that reason, I didn't want to cut the bed floor out of this truck. If I decide its not low enough when its all together... I may go back and do a step notch.
What settings are you using on your mig welder?
Incredible watching transformation of this truck. Can't stop watching the videos. Curious if you put the old floor mat back in. If not would you consider selling it? lmk
what size/brand and backspace front and rear wheels tires did you purchase...thanks
Mustang IRS set up , sit nice, and give a great ride .
Anxiously waiting on the IFS swap.. any idea when the video will be up.. i am loving the videos.
Looks pretty good What! What do you plan to use for an engine? I had thought about a coyote swap in my F150 but that is 10k that I don't have.
Saludos. De que carro es la suspencion ? Buen trabajo te felicito.
It's just a cruiser dude. He isn't going to be hauling logs kr anything!
What year did you take off the Differential??
I Think it was from a 1998 or 1999
Just curious, why didn’t you just do a flip kit in the existing 9”? It’s stronger, easier to change gearing and axles.
$$$$$$$$$
Dude it an optical illusion , unless you were touching the frame rail with the string !!!!!
What year is that explorer rear axle from??
What size spacers did u use to angel the rear end
I found the cheapest 2" spacers I could get off ebay
The Explorer is to narrow for a full size truck, you should probably use an F150 axle, I have Explorer axles on my Bronco II and they fit that perfectly!
What are your plans for the 3 speed? Are you gonna leave it in or do you plan on something with an overdrive. My truck is or was like yours, 360/3spd.
Hey man what year explorer diff did you use? Or are they all the same?
What year Explorer did you pull that out of?
As far as replacing a 9” with an 8.8, I get it if you are CV front end swap for same bolt pattern
I should have looked into that, I just needed a cheap set of wheels to be able to roll the truck around
The older ones have a narrower rearend the wheels are closer to being centered offset. The newer ones have a super wide axle and positive offset 16" (2 designs). The last wheel update are 17"s.
Nice work.
To each his own, but lowering it to the point of notching the frame, not what I would do.
Yeah, same question,, why would you swap a 9" for an 8.8,,
Better gear ratio than what he had, made lowering the rear easier, not much weaker in strength when comparing stock equipment, and he also gained the ability to run a much cooler looking deep dish wheel. Though he obviously didn't consider that
@@edjackson4389 I considered the cooler wheel!... just haven't ordered them yet haha! I didn't want the truck stuck on jack stands and thought the cheap crown vic wheel would at least let it roll around
@@330_garage3 That's good news! I hoped you weren't gonna stick some pizza cutters under that hot rod. I had a 68 with 15x10s with 265/50-15 tires on all 4 corners back in the 90's. They rubbed a little but looked mean
when are you doing the crown vic swap?
Brakes AND Steering functional? That’s askin a lot
😬
Hi, this truck gonna be sick!!
do you know which year of ford explorer and model does it fit on a 1968 F100 ??
You want an explorer or mountaineer with a 5.0 motor. Mostly the early to mid 90's with a straight rear axle
@@330_garage3 Thanks for the information, do you know from wich year it´s the one that you put?
Regards from Chile
must be a 4,10 gear ratio?? what about a 3.55?
Great build, what shocks did you end up going with in the back? Stock or drop?
I didn't ever get this setup on the road, so I never purchased shocks. I swapped a 4-link rear suspension into this truck.
Nice Work!
Is this guy related to matt damon?
Mike R he’s a dead ringer for Chris Pine
I’m just going with a Crown Vic rear end. I’ll have to cut off all the junk and weld on spring pads.
Go with the 98-02 cv axles they are narrower than 03+ but best gear you will find is 3.55 in a cv.... Ranger fx4 lvl2 got 4.30 gears fyi
What are you using as far as rust removal and paint for the frame??
I'm planning to use Eastwood rust encapsulator. I have used it on quite a few projects in the past and had good results with it
Doesn’t that notch in the frame weaken it?
Not when it’s reinforced with 1/32” steel plating…. On both sides!
I’m not an engineer, but I can’t see the notch kit effectively replacing the integrity of that quite large chunk of missing, structural steel frame.
2” spacers would fix the wheel figment issue.
It would have made much more sense to four link it and air bag or coil springs it. Since you went to a car springs at front
03+ crown vic wheels are +40 offset you need 0 offset depending on wheel width
What did you end up doing to make the bed sit perfectly did you add spacers im having the same problem ?
I bought some cheap 2 inch wheel spacers off ebay for right now. Just to make the crown vic wheels work. The truck is not running and just needs to roll around the shop. I think some aftermarket wheels should solve the problem.
If going for the Crown Vic front end and want the matching bolt pattern, could try a set of wheels off a Panther(crown vic/grand marquis/town car) made in 2002 or before. same bolt pattern, but they have about 2 inches more (less?) back space.
got a silly question i know has anyone ever put a front wheel drive under this type of vehicle like out of a modern car
so a junkyard has a black friday sale? did they call it greasy friday? either way good pick up..pun not intended
hahaha yeah Pick N Pull does sale days usually around the federal holidays. 40 - 50% off everything you can haul out of the yard!
What year explore rear differential works best for this swap or what year did you go with?
Ford Explorer (1991-2001) (The Ford Explorer Sport still used the solid rear 8.8 until 2003)
Explorers center section is offset to one side..
What made you decide to go with the 8.8 over the 9“? The brakes?
The cost. The 8.8 comes out of the junkyard with 3.73 gears, limited slip, disc brakes for $75 bucks. To set up a 9" like that would be close to 1000 dollars. Also I'm doing a crown vic front end... so now the bolt patterns will match
What shocks did you use after the swap??
none yet, I need to figure that out!
Why Don't get a 8.8 out of a Crown Vic........Since your putting a Crown Vic front end.
Vic rear doesnt bolt in right? watts and 4link from factory?
What is "ideal" pinion angle...
Anyone....
With standard U-joints, ideal pinion angle is between 1 and 3 degrees opposite transmission output.

Thanks for responding...
@@joeschlotthauer840 A few weeks ago I did a video on just this topic when I installed the driveshaft in my truck. It explains it well and shows the transmission and rear end setup.
Depends if you have a stick or auto and leaf spring vs other suspension designs. And also if it's a drag car etc etc.
Si hay alguien que diga la suspensión de cruwon Vic de que año se puede adaptar para un Ford pickup f100 62
Pedro Lara,,, Del 2003 al 2011 , del Crown Victoria, Gran Marquis y Del Mercury Marauder,,,
I have to cut the bed sow I can put a 12 in fat tires
Wow, that was easier than going with a spring on top by moving the axle mounts on top>>>????? Strange, weaker frame, expensive parts, etc.
What would you suggest to get the truck to sit lower.. mount the springs on top of the frame?
looks good ......just tub out the bed....
