She'd have either lost her face in the first 3 seconds, or been the Avatar that finally ripped him limb from limb and buried the parts in separate kingdoms
Out of everything Korra suffers through this show, I honestly think that's the moment that scares me the most. Losing somebodies baby? Nah, I'll take [redacted awful shit that happens in later seasons].
Yup! Because even in the first Avatar show, there's a scene where the spirits of Aang and Roku flying above on Roku's dragon. And Iroh was the only person in that scene that could see their spirits flying above them
For what is considered the weakest season in the franchise there are still amazing episodes like this. This episode marks the return of original avatar animation studio which shows not only in art and animation quality but also storyboarding and direction. Also Iroh's line "If you look for the light, you can often find it.But if you look for the dark that is all you will ever see" is the best aphorism he shared with us.
unpopular opinion maybe but this is the weakest episode in the season. The alice in wonderland inspiration borders being plagiarism and the fanservice is too over the top. In ATLA the spirit world always seemed so creepy and foreign and in this it's like a colorful fairytale.
It was said that people were very peaceful and/or spiritual could see spirits from the spirit world and Iroh was one of the most spiritual characters in the avatar or like most Air Monks which is why he saw Aang, Roku, and Rokus dragon.
Hearing you describe Iroh's wisdom as _"healing words"_ was just so perfect. This reaction was so good and enjoyable!! From Iroh, the emotions, the symbolism, Jinora, the humor, to Tenzin, etc! Love the discussion/ interpretation you guys spoke on the symbolism of child Korra in the spirit world. Y'all are great mothers!
Iroh's advice to Korra about finding the light within herself parallels a similar piece of advice he gave Aang in "The Crossroads of Destiny", about finding the light at the end of a dark tunnel. Jinora coming across Professor Zei's skeleton is similar to Aang finding Gyatso's in "The Southern Air Temple". The circular design in the book Jinora looks through before asking a Knowledge Seeker for help is the same one used in the Book Two: Spirits trailer from the 2013 San Diego Comic Con. This episode bears many similarities to "The Library", which was also the tenth episode of the second book of the first series. Both feature Wan Shi Tong and his library, as well as the abduction of a close companion of the Avatar that leaves them in tears.
I think that Vaatu was also a reason why the spirits were "bad". Remember, in the "first Avatar" episodes, Vaatu also turned all the spirits evil when he was around.
She couldn't hv known cuz it was her 1st time there.....same with Tenzin because he nver entered before. If anyone was to know it would have been his daughter
Watching first time reactions to this episode is priceless...that one moment as realization hits. Oh, and you calling the spirit meerkats (or what ever they are) "Karens" is also priceless.
The whale spirit seen flying when Korra and Jinora enter the Spirit World was among the spirits fleeing from Raava and Vaatu's fight in "Beginnings, Part 1" and was later among the spirits led by the aye-aye spirit against Jaya and other humans in "Beginnings, Part 2". Iroh uses a teapot that once belonged to Avatar Wan, which the latter used to carry Raava's weakened form prior to the second Harmonic Convergence in "Beginnings, Part 2". Professor Zei's skeletal remains are seen in Wan Shi Tong's Library, where he decided to stay despite the structure's submergence in "The Library". Wan Shi Tong declares that the Avatar is not a friend to the spirits, a result of Aang's betrayal of his trust during their previous encounter.
Personally I really think that Avatar is a great show to start when you actually are around the same age as the main characters. I remember the show premiered when I was 12 and ended when I was about 15, which I felt was perfect as it took me from Aang's age all the way to Sokka and Zuko's age, and I picked up on everything just fine. And then Korra came out when I was about 18 or so and carried through till I was 20, which was also pretty perfect. But above all, like most shows it's best absorbed by those who are willing to think and understand. It's obviously not just about the action or the suspense. If a person isn't enthralled by episodes like The Storm or Zuko Alone, then I feel like they aren't ready for it. I think watching it as it was airing was also a good experience cause the time in between lets you process everything. This whole thing where reactors forget details in between watching episodes; that just couldn't happen with me back in the day; I was far too obsessed.
The season 2 haters are never validated by these. It’s still a fun season despite some flaws and I think people are starting to realize that the hate is a complete overreaction
As soon as Korra leaves and the world zooms out, what if that’s what Dora sees and that why she never knows which is the right turn? 🎼 “Korra Korra Korra the Explorer!!! Bird and super cool Explorer Korra.”
Tenzin when he finds out Korras inner spirit turned into a little like 💥. “Well that explains . . . everything” 🤣 young woman on a good day. Spiritually 9 years old every other day.
I used to think Korra was dumb for just opening that second portal for Unavatu, but it’s really today when it’s just hit me that, Jinora is technically Korra’s granddaughter and so she had no choice.
In Every single reaction I’ve seen, there was not one person, not ONE, who loved the return of iron in this episode. Can’t say I blame them, though. He’s a lovable character.
I remember reading somewhere that one of the creators said Iroh can exist as he is in the Spirit world for about 300-500years. The insinuation would be either: A): turn into a human Spirit similar to the Painted Lady (She used to be Human) B): Become a stronger Spirit like Old Iron/Lady Tienhai C):Disperse into energy within the Spirit World reaching Enlightenment (Moksha) and escaping Reincarnation D): Reincarnate like in the (Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism) beliefs. (Everyone goes through the cycle in those beliefs but lose their memories/essence in between cycles)
what about the uniqueness of the world, the clashing philosophies, the psychological themes, the character development, the fighting styles, the animation, the music...
Iroh decided to leave his mortal body behind in order to live among the spirits in the Spirit World. Unalaq uses spiritbending to convert the positive energy within a spirit into negative energy, corrupting them in the process.
When that Meerkat called Korra a “clod” I was like “Peridot!” No. This is Rava’s Universe not Steven’s Universe. Not even the same voice. Just feeling nostalgic.
21:21 Korra’s mom and dad didn’t keep her away from spirituality. She has lots of mentors growing up but SHE didn’t feel any spiritual connection. Literally addressed in S1E1
I wonder what happens to human souls in avatar cause they don't go to the spirit world and I feel iroh would of accepted death to be in with he's son and family it would of been nice if he's son had showed up
Tbh the writers really tokenized Iroh here, they just had him spouting proverbs and platitudes in every scene like they were trying desperately to recapture the "wise old man" we got in the original series
I was never comfortable about them bringing back Iroh for Korra. I get that he's popular but the thing is his voice actor died and I'd prefer my memory of him to have the proper voice. Aku from Samurai Jack's a different situation for me as that story hadn't been finished and you can't really write out the main villain like they kinda did for the third book of Last Airbender.
Nahh I don’t think spirits even if your a really powerful 1 can manipulate a human just like in the beginnings part 1 and 2 he could only turn the spirits evil .
we all needa be thankful korra never ran into the face stealer.
Facts holy cow how'd I'd never think about that going down!?

Wow never noticed
I didn't realize that, cool.

@Vince Mcmahon I didn't know, to be honest
Iroh always did have a strong connection with the spirits. This is paradise for him.
Yup! Because even in the first Avatar show, there's a scene where the spirits of Aang and Roku flying above on Roku's dragon. And Iroh was the only person in that scene that could see their spirits flying above them
Everything y'all said about the inner child...real shit.
