    Wan Shi Tong considers Unalaq an ally. After Aang broke the spirit's trust, the avatar's word meant shit to Wan Shi Tong. In the owl's eyes, the avatar was willing to deceive the spirits to fulfill his own agenda. This is a prime example of karma (or rather karmic retribution), another eastern philosophical tenet. This means the decisions of the past will reverberate for better or for worse in the future.
    We could go into it starting with Yangchen, but to save time we'll use Kyoshi... Avatar Kyoshi created the Dai Li and Kyoshi Warriors, inevitably leading to the downfall of Ba Sing Se. Roku's karma was his indecision to kill Sozin, spawning the hundred year war and the air nomad genocide, which Aang had to make amends for.
    Now Aang's broken promise to Wan Shi Tong will have it's reckoning with Korra.

      @Pablo360able 6 ปีที่แล้ว +165

      Huh… now that you put it like that, we can even still see the reverberations of Kyoshi and the Earth King's feud in the Season 4 conflict.

    • @bileygr1216
      @bileygr1216 6 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Shitstirrer No. You are incorrect. The entire eastern philosophy is centered around preventing reincarnation to prevent the 4 factors of materialistic existence. The idea of the ideal afterlife would be to be in the prescence of the supreme entity. To attain that which transcends existence, absolute permanancy. To be with the omnipotent is the goal of life. To truly love and to feel that which mere gestures of the material existence cannot. I'm a Hindu which is a religion in South Asia and correlates to Buddism, so I have some knowledge of this fundamental nature.

The amount of spiritual energy was amplified exponentially and while the Korra v Unaloq fight was awesome, it would have been boring otherwise to see someone who can only bend water fight someone who has all the elements at their disposal. It also makes sense that Vatuu was able to completely consume Unaloq considering his almost fetishistic interest in spiritual control

    I never figured that Unalaq was influencing or controlling Wan Shi Tong, I think any spirit at that level is kind of above being influenced by human emotions or whatever, they have distinct personalities and roles in the world. I think Wan Shi Tong is just along for the ride with Unalaq since he's probably flattered him, given him knowledge and built himself up as very respectful of the spirits whereas from Wan Shi Tong's perspective, nearly every other human that's come to his library in a long time has tried to trick him or manipulate him (and was worse at it than Unalaq is, I guess).

    • @TheMagicHoboTMH
      @TheMagicHoboTMH 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I always took it that Wan Shi-Tong was just allied with Vaatu because he didn't like humans.

    • @tomw4955
      @tomw4955 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      also say what you want: Unalaq is honest about bringing more spiritual balance to the world. his methods are questionable but for wan shi tong not really.

    • @alexschwarz4749
      @alexschwarz4749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I really don't think Wan Shi Tong is being influenced much here. Wan Shi Tong has a history of humans failing his trust and love for knowledge with a neutral stance. He grew to dislike them more and more, he already was like that in ATLA. And then Aang, actually gave him his word that they wouldn't misuse his library, but even the Avatar lied and betrayed him. If you see the whole episode, Wan Shi Tong grows weary and leaves for Unalaq once Jinora mentions that she came with, and is a friend of the Avatar.
      Also strong spirits (which Wan Shi Tong is) seem to be able to resist being swept up in others emotions much more. (For example fire-bird-dragon thing)

    I wouldn't say Aang didn't have any problems, because he did have problems he had to deal with. I just think in comparison to Korra's problems, it's not only different, but there's also the fact that the both of them have different ways of handling said problems.
    Child Korra was just phenomenal! Reverting Korra to her childhood state was an incredible move in symbolizing her stinted growth spiritually. I also wasn't expecting Iroh to come along and be her guide but it definitely worked out for the best! Iroh has always been a man of wisdom, patience, and kindness so he definitely seemed to be the best choice for a spiritual guide.
    Iroh's still dishing out tea and wisdom! "When you look for the light, you can often find it; but if you look for the dark, that is all you will ever see" This could honestly be applied to not only life in general, but also with this show overall in terms of the positives and negatives of it (most especially the negatives since a lot of people like to focus on that a lot).
    I don't think Korra has it in her to just sit back and watch Unalaq basically murder Jinora in front of her. Even if it's obvious he'll betray her, there wasn't really much of a choice when he's literally threatening to kill her in that moment. We also have to consider that this was not only Tenzin's daughter which may have been the major reason why she gave in easily, but this was also Korra's friend and loved one as well. I mean, she had a hard time accepting her father's initial death sentence, remember?

Unaloq was gonna break his word to release her but Unaloq was a powerful manipulator who made his own brother expelled from the northern water tribe and made Korra betray Tenzin and open the portals. This was not all Korra’s fault

    Of course Wan Shi Tong would side with Unalaq. When Aang went into his library, he lied to his face that he wasn't seeking knowledge to harm the Fire Nation and then did just that. He wouldn't then just let Aang's granddaughter into his library after that. And Unalaq has had good relations with the spirits for decades.

    aang lost his entire culture and didnt even know about it until 100 years later, where he was the last of his kind + the avatar. life had him eat shit, that's why he is more mature, mentally strong (plus ofc monk training).
    korra on the other hand was raised in safety with her parents until she was 17, never had to really face life.
    i can see why she appears so childish and annoying at first, but i think her growth can be seen over the seasons, which makes it a wonderful show.

If Sokka had made that promise he probably wouldn’t have been as angry since Sokka is just a human. Ep. 1-6 are average and form the worst part of an amazing show. Ep. 7-14 are down right amazing and contain some of my favorite scenes and moments of the franchise. It's just more polarizing...the quality varies more with ups and downs while the other seasons of ATLA and korra are more consistent... Blame the production issues of Korra book 2 for that...

    Wan Shi Tong in ALA was distrustful of humans. Aang convinced him that he and his group were to be trusted; that they wouldn't seek knowledge to gain an advantage over other humans. However, that is exactly what they did. That is why he took his library back to the spirit world. When Jinora said she was with the avatar he became distrustful of her and went to Unalaq (who must have brought him to his side somehow. I don't think Wan Shi Tong is under anyone's influence) .

    about iroh not being with his son: Its an assumption of yours to think that the believe of the afterlife in Avatar world is similar to the judeochristian of ours. The avatar is reincarnated, that was est in the first episode in Atla with Katara saying that some people think the avatar was never reborn into the air nomads and the cycle was broken. Each new Avatar is a reincarnation of Wan; they don’t live in the spirit world after their death, because Wan’s spirit is reincarnated into the new Avatar. They are only seen in the spirit world as the Avatar is relying more on Raava instead of Wan’s spirit. Raava is simply showing the current Avatar their previous lives, but the old Avatars don’t really reside in the spirit world. Don’t forget that at the end of episode 8 Raava says “we will be together for all of your lifetimes” which reinforces the reincarnation cycle

    I'd say the people who HATE this season hold Avatar a bit too high of a pedestal and put down the things they don't like about this season. They ironically act like how Iroh talks about the dark.
    They focus on the bad and it's all they see out of Season 2, instead of focusing on all the good it does. (Beginnings is a top 5 episode in the series in how beautiful it is and the amount of lore they develop to the Avatar World)
    It doesn't help that Season 3 and 4 are better and more consistent than Season 2. Season 1 also was more consistent with amazing animation quality with a big budget while the animation is janky in Season 2.
    I'm glad you're enjoying Season 2, it just means Seasons 3 and 4 are going to blow you away.

      prophetofgreed First of all, you dont get to make that generalization. I'm so sick of people like you just dismissing people who dont like season 2 and always coming up with some other excuse. You're rude and dont accept different opinions.
      Second, you're a hypocrite. If people think the season is mostly bad with only a small amount of good moments, why would they focus on the good? That's just stupid. You dont just pretend the bad doesnt exist. If someone thinks Beginnings was the only good thing about season 2, that means they thought like 90% of the season was bad. And you're acting like they shouldn't say that.
      You want people to lie and not be honest about their opinions.

    • @prophetofgreed
      @prophetofgreed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Rick J You hilariously talk about me making generalizations while making many big generalizations about my opinion. That's wild.
      Season 2 is still the worst season of Korra but it's not the abomination many make it out to be with some strong episodes in it, I only used Beginnings as an example since they saw it instead of a future episode. I don't see how that makes me hypocritical.
      Everyone is free to share their opinion, I just think many people focus too hard on Season's 2 negatives. I'm sharing how I and many others do like the season overall even with its flaws. Instead of downright hating it.
      Tone down on the baseless accusations and the anger. It's just a show.

      I don’t think your statement is quite accurate or fair. Korra wasn’t a bad person, she was just stubborn and hot headed and had no spiritual connection. She had to learn the spiritual side of being the avatar and learn to cool her temper. She was always decisive whereas Aang wasn’t until the very end. She was quick to act and was a powerhouse that never thought of consequences. Aang had to learn how to be the avatar whereas Korra had to learn how to be more of a human and find her identity and not just be the avatar

    To bend in the spirit world you need your physical body, so by entering through the portal your body and spirit enters the spirit world. If you meditate in only your spirit enters, leaving your body behind in a meditative state, and your spirit cant bend physical elements. And for me this season never sucked, it was just the worst of the 4. The first halves story with the relationships and moody Korra was no good, and the animation was unbearable after watching Book 1. The second half of this season really does make up for all of the shortcomings.

      Rhaegar right so it was established before this episode that bending was possible in the spirit world if you enter through a portal? It was established before this episode that the library somehow traveled to the spirit world? No, wait, I'm pretty sure all of those things were only explained after they happened to rationalize a convoluted plot.

    • @Who-vd3iv
      @Who-vd3iv 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Ricky Ricardo Yes, Unalaq already said that they're was going to bring to the spiritual world something that was never brought, the bending. Wan Shi Tong already said that no human would be able to steal the knowledge of his library again, and then he moved the library to the spiritual world, we saw this in A:TLA guy, or you think that he would sink into the sand and kill himself? Come on. Wasn't this episode to stabilize that powerful spirits can influence on the spirits form, the beggings part.2 established this, because actually this series can establish what they want, this is canon. They throw around the term "spirit world" all throughout the show when it does not apply. Usually it is Katara, Sokka, and Toph none of whom are experts on the subject and are just looking at Aang's meditating body. Most of the time it is Aang in the real world in his astral body. The episode with the angry panda forest spirit is a prime example of misuse of the term as Aang himself misused it and it is the episode Blindwave kept using whenever they discussed the spirit world to their own confusion.

    I really got lord of the rings vibes from this episode, with that dark montain and the part when Vaatu brings korra to him

    This season is like The Last Jedi of the Avatar series. It's polarizing, with some very shitty points- but some very, very amazing points as well. At any rate, I'm increasingly eager to see your guys' reaction to these upcoming episodes! Cheers!

    Unalaq can bend in the spirit world because he has his body where as korra only has her spirit.

    It sucks they had to censor the psychedelic conversation, we all know naheed and rana have tripped before lol one of the best episodes of the entire series

    Korra is 17 in S1 and 18 in S2. Asami and Mako are 18 in S1 and 19 in S2. Bolin is 16 in S1 and 17 in S2. Great reaction to seeing Iroh, you all! I love how the writers kept this great man alive in LOK :'3 I'm having like some mild tears in my eyes at seeing him again :3 'There's a tiny man in the box who sings and plays musical instruments' Cute :3
    'What happened to Furryfoot?' Me: 'Unalaq is what happened.. :(' I love how Korras little face changes after she says goodbye to Uncle Iroh. It's her 'determined' face and it is so cute on a kid :3 Tenzins panicked voice 'What happened to my little girl!?' and Korras face full of shock and guilt.. Chills..
    'Micky. That is disgusting' says the culprit xD lol

    Sad to see good ol' Uncle Iroh go so soon. 😢 I just want to see him more, listen to his endless words of beautiful wisdom & knowledge, and see him drink his iconic Tea he always loves so much. He's the most underrated character of Avatar. He deserves his own separate Show!
    We love you Iroh! ❤😭

    It's crazy how coming back to shows like the Last Airbender and Korra allows me to realize certain lessons that would've helped me back then. What Iroh says about seeing light and dark really reminds me of how I was treating my life when I was in middle school to my sophomore year of HS. Although I did not consciously remember these lessons it still felt familiar to me as I was rewatching this show with you guys. I really feel that The Last Airbender and Korra are some of the most important cartoons ever produced and its a damn treasure to watch it again with people who care about the lessons it provides and the visual storytelling talent of the writers.

    Aang was more spiritual and prone to over thinking things to the point where he's afraid to act. Korra is more physical and prone to acting first without thinking about the consequences or if she should.

      KrypticSoul true, but it's at least more watchable than season 2 imo. The only good episodes in season 2 were beginnings part 1 and 2.

      Season 4 gets some shit, but it's a lot better than people give it credit for. Apart from Meelo ruining every single scene he's in, the only major problem it has is they tried too hard to make the villain evil with throw-away lines of dialogue.

      Just because season 3 and 4 May be better doesn't mean they have to compare season 2 to them and say it's bad. The problem with season 2 is it's inconsistent it has good moments and it's bad moments are really bad.
