For such a big car...there isn't much working room for certain accessory components. Thank you so much for this video however. Your explanations are thorough and complete. Also, thank you for the well-lit documentation. Great video and good work. I am nervous about changing the pump in my Grand Marquis...but the labor at the shop is sooo expensive.
Thank you for the video! Going to change the ps pump on my 2011 I gave my grandparents tomorrow. I feel more confident about it now. I'll be buying a new pulley along with the pump so hopefully I wont have the headache of getting the pulley off!
For some reason Ford changed the code to P7B in 2010. I only know because I was looking at the vin on mine and I couldn't figure out why it said P7B and not P71 until I looked it up.
Thanks for the video, I have a feeling I'm going to have to do this on my 06 Grand Marquis soon. Stiffness at low speeds, pressure switch seems to be working (bumps up RPM at idle), fluid is clean, just the slightest whine at low speed turning.. I'm going to take to my mechanic to diagnose to make sure it isn't the rack but I usually try to do the repairs myself.
I did have a bad power steering pump, nothing was flowing in/out, after replacement it was still not working well. Whoever did the Air spring to coil spring conversion on the Merc before I had it had unplugged the wiring harness to the air suspension control module not realizing it also controls the variable assist power steering. After plugging it back in it steered fine, very smooth. I did get a "check air suspension" alert on startup but after looking the wiring diagram for the air suspension/pwr steering control module if you cut the one for alert display (pin 11 dark green with light green stripe) it will get rid of the suspension message. I would check to see anything is unplugged from the control module first if I were you its located behind the glove compartment.
I really only need to replace the hose. I suspect it's leaking because of the Teflon bushing. What size is the nut connecting the line and what is the easiest way to disconnect it while the pump is mounted?
My friend's pump was making noise the other night and I used regular steering fluid to refill it. Still has an issue, as another friend refilled it for her again and noticed it leaking on the ground. He also used steering fluid, lol. At least the wrong fluid has all leaked out. Thanks for the video and information.
Few questions. Will this work on a 95 grand marquis? How much fluid in total do you use? Do you turn the steering wheel while draining the fluid to drain it all out? Any tips or tricks you might think would help? First Time doing this. I'm 17 and an aspiring mechanic, so the last few years I've been trying to pick up as much as possible! Thanks! I hope to hear from you soon!
Maybe anything else to look at that might be leaking? Already have the following for this. Pump Return hose Pressure hose Rebuild kit Lots of fluids. Anything else? Thanks!!
Sorry, I just saw this. The 95 should be similar. I have a 2000 that has a steering box not a rack. The pump looks the same, but the fluid i think is different. Make sure you fallow what is recommended as far as fluid.
I got the pump off without taking the pulley off. found a way on accident. when it pissed me off . take all bolts out but the hard one. you know which it is then slightly twist your pump down enough to get an 18 on the hose nut. take it off the the 10 bolt comes out all the way
Brian you seem to know the engine drivetrain very well .Is that because you've learnt as you went or were you a technician. Which ever you were professional or hobbyist you produced another well made informative video, a pleasure to watch in fact As I said I don't own a Crown Vic but since the last video I watched of yours I've found an export /import company who specialize in American car importation So I still may be able to buy one If anyone else can offer me any advice on buying a Crown Vic I would greatly appreciate it Particularly parts that wear /break often so I can have them sent over with the car Thanks Daz UK
Sorry, I just saw this. It all depends on milage. I would look for low milage newer than 2006, if I could. (60k miles) At 100kish water pump. 120kish ignition coils. New plugs no matter what. 170 rebuilt trans if it was used hard. 130 brakes. 120 oil cooler lines if it is a p71. 170 power steering. 160 fuel pump. These milages are assumptions as worst case. Some go above 200k with no issue. There were several cars in the uk that used the 4.6 ford engine, MG ZT 260 and Rover 75 V8. So you might be able to get engine and transmission parts.
bfrance2002 my pump going out now..... 238k... 04 Lincoln town car.... No major work Intake manifold Water pump, twice Ignition coils Throttle position sensor Need my pump changed Differential gasket Rear socks
That is a 66 Rivera. My grandfathers car. Will do some vids on that soon. I wish it was a charger... I could paint the Rivera orange and put a '01' on the door. :-)
bfrance2002 France this whole time I've been thinking my oil cooler lines were leaking after I just replaced them but it's coming from behind the power steering pump pulley.. How long did this take you and cost on parts?
2003 is the year the switch to rack and pinion steering was made, not 2004 and the cars were available starting in Feb. 2002. Corresponds with the release of the Mercury Marauder.
Thank you. Good to finally find a direct, simple video that covers what I wanted to know and was specific to the car I have. Much appreciated.
thanks. glad it helped.
Man this is exactly the video I needed to watch. Five year old video still helping people. Thank you very much Sir hope all is well.

This video is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for showing the whole process and having so much detail.

Great Job Brian. Thanks for the info. I own a 2010 P71 and enjoy working on it. Your vid was real helpful.
For some reason Ford changed the code to P7B in 2010. I only know because I was looking at the vin on mine and I couldn't figure out why it said P7B and not P71 until I looked it up.
great video but you left out the 2 most important steps - how to remove the difficult bolt & how to remove the high pressure line
I am getting ready to do this same job on a 2005 Lincoln town car, thanks for the video.
I’m doing same thing to 2005 towncar
Your video is excellent. Thank you so much for taking the time to help others!

Brad Johnson did you get yours diagnosed mine is the exact same as yours and doing the same.

How did you get the pipe from the pump off ? you skipped that part and just put it in the Bench

Those pumps are a pain, I never reinstall the bolt behind the hose. Great video too...
shouldn't you prime the new pump before starting up the car?
Thank you so much my dude, I really needed a direct tutorial and you have saved my day

bfrance2002 France hey no problem, at least you replied! Haha. Thanks! Getting it done probably just after Christmas!
(Merry Christmas BTW!)
Thanks for the helpful video . Glad you took the time to help people😇😇😇
I don’t have any fluid because it’s spewing out of the car.. is that caused by power steering pump?
My fluid loss was as a result of the power steering cooler, which due to fluid loss seized my pump.
Can you see where the fluid is leaking from?
What's needed to change the power steering hose ?
Ikr.. he left that out.. that was the show stopper.
whats that long tool you have? that bar?
Great video have same car going to do it tomorrow u helped alot thanks
What power steering fluid do y’all use ?
These cars use Mercon V ATF as power steering fluid.
I appreciate all the effort put into this video. I now know, my car is going to the Ford dealer to be fixed.

twisted intentions I am working on the same issue. I found this vid because of the hard bolt lol. Will try this out thx for the tip
the pump won't budge with that hard bolt still in
Is it possible for my pump to be leaking and not have any signs from the steering wheel?
Yes. until you fully run out of fluid.
What size is the but on the outgoing hose that the 2nd but on the block is behind
Im sorry. I dont remember th size.

Hey, can you re upload the video. It is not working.
Thanks for showing how to remove the pump. i will replace mine in a few days. Is not that hard!
Thanks for the video! I see another car in the video that's gray. What is it? Looks like a fun project.
Looks like a late 60s-early 70's charger fastback

For some reason this video lags and disconnects
I love This guy Lmao the this this in the idler pulley thingy
what made you do that job ??
it was whining and hard to turn.
bfrance2002 oh okay i have kind of stiff steering but no whining
06C.V.P.I lovemyvic I have the same problem, did a pump fix your issue?

Good job! Thank you.
Thank you
It would be nice to have included what tools are needed in the description.
That's probably true, but now I don't remember.
Why didn't you just replace the whole unit(pump and pulley)? They cost another $30, and save you a whole ton of grief.
Get some heat in your garage!
Good video.
Thanks for the Vid!!!
ty u man
good job
thanks.
I'm going to call you shakey.
My dad has Parkinsons and I recognized your symptoms immediately. You're providing a great service. Thank you.
thanks
I'm very familiar with Parkinson's as I'm very aware I noticed your shaking on the video where you pulled the tranny down.
@@bfrance2002 people are dicks. Hope im still working on cars when I get to be an older guy. Keep at er bud
samanthaeckhardt3070 do you even lift bro?
