  • What’s the latest on the Finch West LRT? In the first episode of Metrolinx Builds, we talk project facts, updates and what the next steps are to bring this important project into service for the community.
With 18 stops across 10.3 kilometres of rail, the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) line will run along Finch Avenue West from Keele Street to Highway 27, where it will turn, then travel south to the Humber College north campus. It will sport connections with other TTC lines, as well as connections to Peel and York Region local transit services.
The Finch West LRT project will give those in northwest Toronto a transit system that offers more choices to travel. The project will cut down travel time and increase transit reliability. The line will feature accessible platforms, improved streetscapes and cycling infrastructure that is safe and convenient.
Here's how to get in touch with the Finch West LRT team:

Love seeing new light rail actually get put in. It seems a lot of people here don’t comprehend that there’s a ton of approvals that are needed before you can officially open.
I’d love to see metrolinx bring their services to Niagara and connect St.Kits, Niagara Falls, & Welland… those 3 large population centres is on target to have 3/4 of a million people by 2050… so having metrolinx come in and build LRT for the region would be the perfect focal point to build around.

*Love seeing new light rail actually get put in. It seems a lot of people here don’t comprehend that there’s a ton of approvals that are needed before you can officially open.*
That's the problem when everything moves so slowly when it doesn't have to. Decades ago things in Toronto and much of Canada simply got built. They drew up the plans and built it. Nowadays you need to do a ton of studies, get a ton of approvals, hope that there isn't too much opposition and all the construction goes relatively smoothly and not too overbudget and then it finally opens.
Its mind boggling to me that in the time its taking to still try and finish the Eglinton LRT that Shanghai had built large portions of its massive subway system that's still expanding to this day. We should've just gave some Chinese construction companies the contracts to build GTA public transit and they probably would've finished many if not most of those projects by now.

I kinda wish the Finch West LRT was underground between Jane and Keele because if the Jane LRT is build (which is inactive not canceled alright!?) it would be better interchange station, but also because the Finch Line feels like the 510 Spadina Streetcar with a underground stop at both ends. But nonetheless I’m still excited for this line to open

    • @SyntaxOverflow

@SyntaxOverflow Probably because it seems to have a dedicated ROW, allowing them to run at higher speeds. However, 18 stations over 10.3 km means there is a station roughly every 0.5 km. That's more like a streetcar than LRT. The train won't be able to run at its fastest speed if it needs to stop so often.

You can bring in the folks that built transit projects in New York...even those that finished the 12-years-late East Side Access tunnels for the Long Island Rail Road to serve Grand Central Terminal. they kept on pushing back the opening date here as well, with little defects that kept it from opening by each new deadline, even with the one ventilation fan that delayed the whole project until early 2023 (this was when the MTA kept on telling us that it was surely going to open "before the end of the year [2022]").

It will be an improvement over the bus service. But I think we need to stop calling it rapid transit. This is not rapid transit, but rather an upgraded local service, no different than the downtown streetcars on Spadina.
The 11km journey on the Finch West LRT will take about 34 minutes. This in no faster than the bus it is replacing, except for maybe in the height of rush hour traffic. The current bus takes about 35 minutes or so to make the same journey.
11km on the Toronto Subway takes about 21 to 22 minutes. Almost 15 minutes faster than the Finch West LRT.
Again, it will offer a nicer ride. But this line is not going to decrease commute times, and it will not offer an auto competitive trip like the subway does. Meaning, you are likely not going to see many auto drivers switching modes of transport.
This begs the question. Would less expensive and faster to construct bus lanes have done the job just as well, and for a longer length?
If we are going to build rapid transit, it has to be fully grade separated, and have stations spaced a proper distance apart from each other.

They should just give the contracts to Chinese construction companies and they'll have it done in a few short years. Just look at what they did with the Shanghai subway system and how quickly it grew and is still growing in the past couple of decades. Its like they're building Toronto's entire subway system every few years.

The red TTC livery would look so much nicer than the grey and white. Maybe Metrolinx is trying to associate the LRT lines with the subway system, and that's why they chose the colour scheme that they did.
