man if Mike Harris didn’t let the construction of a tunnel at Eglinton West be filled in even if the line was cancelled, the Crosstown would’ve been a subway with these major grade separation and having smaller tunnels. Funny that a store in Eglinton Square for wall designs for a subway stations that will never get built in Scarborough while also having served by almost three surface stops. That weird island in between O’Connor, Eglinton, and Victoria Park would’ve been a perfect bus interchange station
So the plaza at Mt Dennis for the unopened line, is being ripped up, so that they can build the extension of an unopened line. You literally can't make this shit up...
The true start date of this mess was in the mid-90's when then-premier Harris cancelled the Eglinton subway - I remember driving around a series of holes that were already dug for that project which is really this project.
@@XandateOfHeaven Thanks for that info - there's also the mess called Hwy. 407 - Harris basically gave it to the builder and that's why tolls are too high to get most drivers to use it instead of Hwy 401.

Unpopular opinion: The eastern surface portion of the line should probably be shut down at some point in the future if it proves too slow and rebuilt fully grade separated with some of the close stops being removed (IE: Hakimi-Lebovic).
Not unpopular, logical. The surface section in Scarborough could be as slow as Spadina streetcars. I just don't understand why the city REFUSES to give the TTC signal priority, when this section should be rapid and not running at turtle neck speed.
@@nanaokyere7141 Thanks. I used to ride the Eglinton bus on that portion, the bus was so slow and the new LRT will probably be nearly as slow as the bus. The people in that area deserve rapid transit.
This is embarrassing and disgraceful. Only in this country do you see this kind of rubbish planning and construction that what we call the third world is excelling at. Fantastic video you put together. Keep up this amazing work. Its better than what our 'experts' are capable of doing
We NEED to protest this line ASAP. No more delays or excuses. Also, when this line opens, they need to fire the CEO of Metrolinx, Phil Verster. We've been waiting 14 YEARS and in that same time span, his pay has gone up SIGNIFICANTLY. Ridiculous and insulting.
This video shows a lot of bike lanes, which have become controversial lately. Doug Ford is getting rid of them. I think it is still too early to decide this. Covid-19 has changed transportation usage since about 2020. That's only four years ago -- not enough to evaluate long term effects.
The bike lanes on Eglinton didn’t affect car traffic because there hasn’t been any significant car traffic on Eglinton for 10 years. The Crosstown construction made it impractical for anyone to drive on Eglinton.
Because of national and provincial security, the opening date of the first section of Line 5 is withheld, unless you have the needed security clearance.
It's insane the time it's taking to build this thing. Montreal did 70 kilometers and double the station, and two-thirds are already in service. They started at the same time.
I don’t understand why on the surface the transit signal turns red before regular traffic light and does that mean partial TSP will just make it more or less the same frequency as the regular light
They have been testing the trains for over a year now but nobody can ride them yet because that little piece of sidewalk 50ft away from the trains on the other side of the street needs to be dug up and rebuilt every couple of weeks. People just can't ride the train if that little piece of sidewalk is just not right
By the way the only subway project that was completed on time and under budget was the Sheppard line… completed by TTC only.. no private contractors in charge.
Thank you very much Transitthinker. I’m really grateful for your videos. Q: Any idea when construction will start on the the GO station at Caledonia? Is there a commitment to building it?
There is no accountability, and therefore no repercussions for the lack of transparency. This project is a cash cow for some lucky people who aren't in any way incentivized to hasten the completion.
But, good lifetime employment for a lucky few! I expect that people who were apprentices when the project started will be able to retire from it, never having worked anywhere else!
The Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit Network has now taken over a decade to complete. Line 1 subway system which is longer was completed in only 8 years and is 8.3 km in length and its operational. Metrolinx is taking the city and the province for all it can get in money. Expect an increase in transit fares for the Greater Toronto Area.
I don't think you can confidently assert that the surface section of line 5 will be faster than the bus it's replacing. Finch West is now expected to be just as fast as the bus on that corridor was before construction started, of course with half as many stops, dedicated lanes, and signal priority, which are all lacking for the bus. And in general, surface trams have a pretty hard average speed limit of 19km/h, with very few systems exceeding that value
Doug Ford ran an entire election campaign where none of the PC candidates were allowed to talk to the press or their constituents. He ran with no platform, no promises besides lowering the gas tax, and didn’t talk to anyone. I think the lack of transparency is here to stay.
One thing that hasn’t changed is it still hasn’t opened after 5 years over its planned opening and the fact we have no clue why it hasn’t opened or when it will open.
Public money sitting there for years. By the time we use it its time to be renovated and updated. Open up at least some of the grass areas outside and sitting areas inside for the public that funded it.
Some parts of phase 1 are already starting to look run down. It's so ridiculous. Don't we pay private companies like this SPECIFICALLY because they're supposed to have prior experience and avoid these kind of delays?
NORTH AMERICA/CANADA, reason for “SLOWER BUILS, IS CORRUPTION!” Also “NO CHARGES FOR DELAY OF COMPLETION!” CHINA would have completed MANY-MANY KILOMETRES IN JUST A FEW MONTHS. WHY?
The British & French built th chunnel 50.46km under the English channel in only 6 years. The Eglinton LRT is shorter and has already taken twice as long. Someone needs to be fired, Metrolinx is a total waste.
This project is a complete embarrassment to all Torontonians, many years late, billions over budget and still inoperable. The same applies to the new and also inoperable Finch LRT. Meanwhile the same obviously incompetent provincially owned contractor Metrolinx has started building the subway extension known as the Ontario line. This project is already over budget and expected to be years late. How do we get out of the circle of incompetence? Firing Premier Doug Ford at the next election would be a good place to start.

When does the city expects to award the West Expansion? Is WestEx consortium the same group that is constructing the East portion?
