    Another good time to use F3 for landing is in max crosswind conditions. With the slighter higher VAPP speed, your drift is a bit lower than at Flap Full. So, when you want to de-crab, you don’t have to use as much rudder with F3 compared to Full. We’re only talking a few degrees but every little helps. 😉

    Now, everyone know which Flap setting to use and why, if both pilots get incapacitated and someone need to land the aircraft safely. Good stuff! Cheers.

    Great explainer! Thanks! On the flap selector, I see we have "0", "1", "2", "3L", and "Full". Why is 3 different? What does the "L" mean?

    Turns out I was using them the right way all those years quite intuitively. I always use Flap 3 for landing (or 30 in the 737) whenever possible.

    Nice video, I like to do F3 on long runways, as you mentioned, but I really don't like it in gusty, especially at x-wind scenarios. It feels so wobbly and I think it is better to have the engines at a higher thrust setting as they feel more responsive. I am a manual flight, manual thrust guy and I need to feel the aircraft 😀. It was very refreshing to hear your thoughts on this topic, as I have sometimes discussions with captains when I fly in these conditions and they want to talk me into F3. Always happy landings!

    @320 Sim Pilot, great vid as always. I cannot remember if you covered the subject of climb gradients in a previous video, but my question is, is the climb performance something you need to work out, or is it available on charts/efb or on the MCDU? Or is there a general rule of thumb to it?

    For me I prefer flaps full landing for handling wise, the controls feel much more natural, while in F3 the control feels slightly wobbly.
    It's even a worse idea to land F3 on a 321 where the pitch call out is at 7.5 deg, while you are already at 5 degrees nose up with F3 giving you very little room to flare, and to add to that countless F3 landings that end in firm / hard landing or worse tail strikes.
    My airlines used to track this a F3 landing saves anywhere from 7-15 kg of fuel per landing, personally I'd rather do one engine taxi than making it harder on the landing for myself.

    In order to compensate the drag resulting from full flaps stage (at +-5NM), do you increase the speed ? If you do, how much time (or distance) is this increasing held?

    Can you explain why we get slats and flaps for takeoff flap 1 setting, but for landing flap 1 setting we only get slats and no flaps?

    • @320SimPilot
      @320SimPilot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I cannot give a definitive answer as I did not design the system. However I find Flap 1 with slats only useful for flying an approach as it provides little drag but allows us to slow down a lot more than flying 'clean'. If it also included flaps it would add drag we wouldn't need. For takeoff the drag is less significant for the small flap it provides.

  • @HAZ2B
    @HAZ2B 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was wondering, how do you determine the flex? Is it in your performance calculator?

    Thank you so much for these details I can use for my flights. By the way I have one more question about flaps 3 landing. Some approaches got high bank angle last turn very late before touchdown (thinking about CYCG Castlegar circling for runway 15 approach in Canada). Is flaps 3 used to avoid stall during last turn? Should flaps full be set during very short final just before touchdown as the runway is not so long(5299ft)? Or turn with flaps full and a higher selected speed? Thanks

    Was thinking. IRL you request your fuel in the briefing and know for example you want 4.5 tonne. However how do you know what’s left in the aircraft from the previous flight?

    • @tomstravels520

    • @tomstravels520
      @tomstravels520 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@karldenton oh I thought you meant briefing in the plane like during turnarounds. The refuelling panel will tell the refueller how much is in there so the pilots tell the refueller how much they want and they jus fill it up until that amount is reached

      I haven't had good enough performance with sim update 8 to even bother to start a flight 😂. The stuttering is terrible and I've noticed a huge difference (for the worse) after not flying on the sim for a couple of months. RTX3060 (12gb) & core i7-10700F. Something has gone badly wrong!

      It's another issue with MSFS. I've honestly given up on MSFS now, 8 Sim Updates later and it's still buggy and laggy. I'm waiting for Xplane 12.
