  • Flap 1? Flap 5? Flap 25? Any idea what flap selection to use for departure? Latest tutorial will explain how!
    Join me in East Midlands as I discuss all the departure flap settings available for the 737. We'll also discuss the performance implications of different takeoff flap settings and look at a couple of real world examples using the 737 Onboard Performance Tool. After we've discussed the theory we'll do a couple of departures using both Flap 1 and Flap 25 and compare the two, I'll also explain how we safely retract the flaps when accelerating to our clean speed.
    Any questions feel free to ask and I'll try my best to get back to you!
    Lastly I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has subscribed to my channel in the last year. I look forward to providing more content for you in the year future! Have a Happy New Year and see you in 2018!

    Excellent! In my sim, I was taking off from Dortmund which is 2000m runway... TOW was high as was tankering fuel and had a high ZFW. I used flaps 15 according to my performance app (not the official Boeing one) and it told me to use full 26K and flaps 15. I used almost all of the runway, so was lucky I paid attention to the flap and used 15

    I always thought I have to retract the flaps when the speed comes to the next speed bug. From flap 5 to flap 1 when it comes to flap 1 bug, flap up when it comes to flap up speed. I guess I had wrong teachers. :D Thank you for this tutorial.

      Johnny Wing Yeah that is counter intuitive but always keep in mind that You need to be above bug speed and trend vector must be positve since You are below manouvering speed .

    Thanks so much. I was referring to the popup window you displayed in many of your videos. I rather suspect that subscription is a bit pricey. I love the data it provides. The auto brake setting vs stopping distance, takeoff flap settings, etc., are precious pieces of information. I looked through the descriptions for some of the available FSX "electronic flight bags" and couldn't find that type of data. Unless you have access to engineering data for the aircraft, I would imagine most app developers would be unable to calculate the various performance data relevant to us. And, I also suspect that all of it is proprietary so you would have to be an airline to purchase a subscription to access it.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that's the OPT App from my work EFB which I've taken a screenshot of and I'm afraid you have to be an airline to access that )(I think)
      There is a table available in the QRH that comes with PMDG where you can calculate stopping distance, it's what we used before !

    Speaking about t/o performance. When setting up for a flight looking at the N1 LIMIT page in the FMC I've noticed that when you select TO-2 for example CLB will still be selected. However, if you also type in a flex temp normally CLB-2 will be automatically selected.
    Would be interesting to hear you talk a bit about this and how it's IRL vs the PMDG NGX if there are any differences and what you normally would select on this page. I've been using both TOPCAT as well as a software called ToPS lately for my performance calculations.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Richard,
      We leave the default values for reduced climb (CLB 1 and CLB 2) for all departures, even shorts runways where we are field length limited. Depending on what thrust setting we use for takeoff decides our derated climb thrust, the FMC will decide CLB-1 or CLB-2 based on what derate we select or/if we decided to use assumed temperature reduction. We don't change it as crew here.

  • @AriomesterDaniel
    @AriomesterDaniel 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you ever so much!! Now I've got how to properly set flaps for takeoff. Have you tried the SBRJ approach and takeoff here in Brazil? 1330m long and a lot of 738SFPs daily on operation. By the way, the SFP was developed initially to operate there. I was so confused on why when I flied to Rio de Janeiro (SBRJ) the rotate and reverse thrust out were so smaller compared to my landings and takeoffs on XP' Zibo738. Now I understood it. Thank you!!

    • @flightdeck2sim

      Thanks Flightsimmer101!
      LVL CHG is a basic pitch mode which will ignore any restriction in the FMC.

    Hello FD2S!
    During pushback, do you always start engine 2 then 1? Or can it be different?
    When do the engine start switches go to continuous? And when can do they go to Auto/Off?
    Also, do you have to know how to swim to become a pilot?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ozan
      We always start no2 first unless the APU is inoperative. This allows us to provide conditioned cabin air (if required) using bleed air from engine no2 before starting engine no1.
      Start switch to Continuous for Take Off and Landing and to off after Take Off and Landing!
      Yes when you join you have to go through Emergency Training and we were required to swim in shorts and a T-shirt with a lifejacket on and some other pool exercises.

    I'm wondering how you decide the n1 limits for the thrust and climb setting?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Calculated by the FMC using the performance database, crosschecked with the Onboard Performance Tool.

    Which "flight bag" do you use?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dan,
      By Flight Bag I think you're referring to the Boeing OPT APP from my EFB which I believe is inaccessible unless you pay for some sort of subscription. Whether that can be done personally or you need to be an airline I have no idea! I've been told TOPCAT is pretty similar if you want to try that.

    Another question but on anti-ice.
    In the NGX activating TAI makes your already very slippery B738 even more slippery since N1 will increase with about 10% from just above 30% with TAI off vs just below 40% with TAI on.
    I learned this happens to compensate for some of the thrust loss with TAI enabled but to me it seems the added thrust exceeds the loss making your approaches quite hard when trying to avoid coming in hot.
    How is this compared to the real bird?

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you select the engine anti-ice on bleed air is taken from the engine to heat the engine cowling, the EEC selects a higher idle N1 to keep the bleed manifold pressurised.
      I don't know how accurately this is simulated with the NGX, I still couldn’t tell you how much N1 increases in real life, I've never really paid attention to it! I just know it does for above said reason!
      There is TAI FCST on the DES Page but I've never used it due to the unpredictably of turning it on and off during a typical descent in Europe through all the gnarly weather. I've never considered how this will affect my descent profile. It does make a small difference to your descent of course but it's negligible compared to say a speed change from ATC or a massive shortcut!
      Hope this helps!

    Hello again FD2S, i've got another question regarding engine bleed off takeoffs you mentioned... i know on the Airbus, the crew sometimes turn off the Packs for extra performance.... in the 737, to get extra performance, do we turn off the packs or the bleeds?

    Just a very quick question, I thought I had read it in the PMDG manual, but can't remember where, what does the flashing letter indicate on the speed indicator on the MCP?

    • @EinkOLED
      @EinkOLED 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Curran I don't know, but I usually get that when the speed on the MCP is 100 knots, which is way above my actual speed and we'll below the stall speed. I guess it is to warn the pilot to increase the speed in the MCP as the auto throttle will never command a speed of 100 knots.

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flashing Letter is Overspeed or Underspeed Limiting.
      Overspeed flashes "8" when the commanded speed on the MCP cannot be reached due to a gear or flap limit or reaching VMO/MMO

  • @EinkOLED

    With flaps up, is the aircraft above the minimum menoevre speed? (which I believe is 200 knots)

    • @flightdeck2sim
      @flightdeck2sim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi EnikOLED
      Minimum maneuver speed is based on Angle of Attack and present airspeed. If you have PMDG consult their FCOM 2 to learn more!

    • @Samjones11203
      @Samjones11203 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Herman Wan the higher flap settings, because higher flaps normally mean ore thrust needed I think

    • @TB-if7px

      Derating isn’t for fuel saving, it’s so the engines have a longer life time! But the lower the % how more fuel you save.
