  • So after having a few people get in touch with me lately asking about certain technique's regarding surface lure's, i thought i'd upload this short video from a nights fishing this week. With calm conditions that night, i decided to throw out the Xorus Patchinko 140 500G. These surface lures are regarded as the best in the business and i fully agree with that statement. There are many ways to work a surface lure, here are a few tips which hopefully a few of you may find helpful. 🎣

    When it’s flat flat like that I would prefer to use the Austurie. Less noise and a subtle wake. Can be the difference than a big noisy Patch 🙌🤟

    Another great vid Cal. I'm certainly no expert on spinning, and enjoy learning from you more experienced guys. I use surface lures for the majority of my sessions due to the nature of the ground I fish. Sometimes I get follows being gentle on the retrieve, other times I'm quite aggressive with the speed of retrieve and strength of the twitching. Best fish I've had was an 8lb Bass while being very aggressive. I guess what I'm saying is mixing it up can prove the difference, as fish are not always near the lure, so more noise can often attract a fish from a greater distance. Hope it helps you, or some of your followers, tight lines.

    Hi Cal. Please accept my most sincere thanks for showing technique for the Patchinko. Last night I typed into TH-cam “ Patchinko technique “ and this video came up. Delighted to see your in Guernsey as I’m in Jersey so similar bait fish etc. I bought a Patchinko at the weekend and chose the ghost lancon. Never had a bass on surface lure yet. That is until 0715 this very morning using your shown technique. 4lbs 6oz. Stomach contained 3 small crabs, a small fillet of white fish and a whole 150mm fish. Great fight and as its not a biggie I kept it for dinner for the family.
    Tight lines to you Cal.
    Cheers
    Paul #Chirping. :)

      Jersey Royal Hi Paul, that’s great to hear! I’m glad you found the video useful. I had quite a few people asking me how to use certain surface lures so that’s why I made a little video on it, seeing as I wasn’t catching any fish at the time. Patchinko’s are brilliant lures, they’re not cheap but worth the money in the long run. Well done on your fish, that’s a nice size too. Thanks for the sub also. Next year I plan on coming to jersey to do some fishing. Guernsey and Jersey are both very similar in terms of ground and fishing yeah. Hope you keep doing well on the surface lures, now is a great time of year for it too! Cheers👍🏼🎣

      FISHING WITH CAL hi Cal. Thanks for your reply. Last 2 months I started plugging again after 17 years off :) poppers, walk the dog lures all bought circa 1993. I used to use a 100g spinning rod too. With my new very recent purchase of Mega craft triple cross 40g it helps with getting the movement better too. I’d never even heard of weed less soft lures until a few weeks back :) modern tech helps ay. If you don’t know anywhere to fish when you come over I’d be more than happy to help. Cheers and again, nice one on this technique video. Screaming reels from an old crapaud:)

    P.s. obviously I have subbed to your channel. Love Guernsey. Visited with wife and teen kids last year. It’s like how Jersey used to be when I was a kid in the 70’s.

    Try just casting out one of the smaller surface lures (I like the spitting wire) and just leave it, perhaps with the odd twitch. It allows fish to move in with no disturbance and they will know its there.

    The first time I ever fished using a Patchinko I had no idea how to work it.
    I didn't walk the dog or anything too fancy but it worked.
    5 Bass totally smashed it within the 1 hour feeding session, whatever I was doing made them hate that thing haha.

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha. To be fair, you can just straight retrieve the Patchinko at a steady retrieve and it will still have a good action on it. Fair play though 👍🏼

    Good advice well presented, thanks. Would you bother with a Patchinko 100?

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never use the 100 no. I know most people love the 100 but for me I find it too small. Even a schoolie bass will inhale that thing and it’ll probably cause a fair bit of damage. The 125 is one of my favourite lures ever though👌🏼

      @@FISHINGWITHCAL I took your advice, bought a 125. Also I have a couple of Axia Cannine 135 to try. Cant fail, right? 🤣

    how long after low water does the tide start to come in , i live in south Wales and i am a complete novice to sea fishing but i have been a fresh water angler for 60 years , but as live near the Loughor estuary i thought i would go sea fishing

      It will all depend on the height of the tide. On big spring tides you will have slack water either side of the tide (at high tide and at low tide) because it’s a big tide it will obviously run a lot faster therefore, when it gets to low tide, you will only have roughly 30mins of slack water, then it will start to flood again.
      On the neap tides (the smaller ones) slack tide will last a lot longer. Where I am, our biggest tide at high is around 10 metres, the smallest tide will be around 6 metres. On the smallest tide you could fish a spot at low for up to 2 hours. During the spring tides you’d be lucky to get 20 minutes in one place before the tide has dropped or risen too much.

    Just wondering if there is a reason for the fingerless gloves that you always seem to wear when lure fishing?

    • @SpiralMoss
      @SpiralMoss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sometimes wear climbing gloves or have them in my lure bag, if I've to climb down or up rock's.
      Especially in the west of Ireland, at low tide you may have to climb down rocks covered in limpets or coral. Depending on your weight it can be quite hard on the hands,even if you're hardy and a tradesmen and have hard calluses. The coral can dig in 👍

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s just habit I guess. In the winter my hands get really sore from working then being out in cold weather. I still end up wearing them most of the time during summer though haha. To me, it feels a bit odd not wearing gloves when fishing. They give that extra bit of protection when handling fish also👍🏼

    Cal, You are saying one thing and doing entirely the opposite! That is recommending working a surface lure slowly, then frantically winding in. And, if you are angling for good sized fish then you require a good sized landing net. TH-cam bad angling techniques (which reach thousands of viewers) almost totally wipes out the work being done by those attempting to teach sensitive angling. Drag a dog up a rockface with two pairs of oversize treble hooks inside it. and there would be an outcry. So few people truly care about fish. Only themselves.

      Ivan Sanders Are you having a laugh!

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ivan Sanders First of all, I never frantically wind a surface lure! That’s a size 2000 reel and when watching footage back on camera it does look like you’re winding faster then you actually are. Secondly, these techniques are things I have been using whilst successfully catching plenty of bass, big or small on these exact surface lures. I’m completely open to constructive criticism however, personally I think you’re full of it to be honest. By saying I’m only out for myself here, I think is absolutely pathetic. I have people message me saying that these tips have helped them catch fish! I appreciate you don’t like the video and that’s fair enough, but never suggest I’m only out of myself. You’re way off the mark.

      My best fish (8lb) was when being very aggressive with a surface lure. Try mixing it up as 1 day you will only catch being gentle, the next day you may only get takes being more aggressive. my friend has had Bass to 16lb on surface lures being far more aggressive than shown in Cal's vid. I'm no expert, but If you only use 1 technique then you are severely limiting your chances
