I have course fished on & off most of my life but this year I aim to have a go at lures for bass on holiday in the IOW. I have no idea what to expect or where to go but I've got some travel spin rods , reels & a bunch of hard & soft lures to have a go with. After years of sitting inactive behind ledger or float rods I like the idea (& I need the exercise) of roaming about with a spinning rod. Even spinning on course waters for pike, chub & perch. I also like the idea of not having to take loads of clobber with me like those carp anglers you see with wheel barrows full of kit. Just a rod, a reel, some lures & a net & if I'm lucky perhaps keep 1 or 2 bass for tea. Love your video's. Subbed & liked.

Ha thanks, sorry for late reply again Think theres a delay - No need to start lure fishing yet people start far too early with bass not chasing the bait fish in any numbers. Hi, great channel full of info , im getting back into sea fishing and was wondering have you ever used a metal devon minnow for bass fishing, only asking because i have a few kicking around many thanks.
Very informative, thanks. When fishing water that isn’t very clear, would you recommend surface lures, or something like a savage sand eel ? The areas I like to fish in Devon are quite often pretty murky.......
Ive not fished for years and Ive just dusted ogf my rod and reel. I live in Galicia in Spain its my first time fishing for sea bass. Any special advice for the area. Im on the north coast crystal clear water with reef and beaches everywhere.
Excellent series and just what I was looking for. One question, please. I come from pike fishing. For pike, I'd typically use 12lb monofilament with a 12" wire trace, swivel at one end and clip at the other. What do you think with the same set up spinning for bass from the shore, please? I am off to Wales for two weeks shore fishing soon 😁. Thanks.
Interesting. Some Pike fishing tactics work well but id ditch the wire trace for 20lb plus flurocarbon . 20lb mainline. Dont use your swivel it adversely effects the lure control. Breakaway miniclips or tie lure direct to flouro using the rapala knot
Have a look at some of the other videos on this channel. Initially we were a fishing marks channel there should be plenty to point you in the right direction.
As informative as ever thank you! I’ve just move down to the coast, living in Hastings now and would love to get into lure fishing. Obviously I wouldn’t ever ask you to give up any marks but what months would you suggest is best to get started? Thanks.
Thank you. Ive had bass as early as March but its hard work. The problem is the fish are not chasing bait fish en-mass. With colder water temperatures and an abundance of lug ,shell fish and now peeler crabs the bass are being lazy. I would honestly not get excited for lures until June and even then pick and choose times.I think your showing your knowledge by asking about months and seasons rather than just where. It amazes me especially on facebook how people are out on the lures because its a nice day. The best anglers i know wont even touch them for months. The good news is you will fish better in Lures in November than May so the season lasts longer. That said there will be the odd catch reported but for consistent results just wait a bit. Let me know you get on and im contactable on matt@saltwaterangler.uk
@@SaltwaterAngler thanks Matt! Yes, I’ve always managed to catch at this time of year on baits I was just curious about lures. I knew this time of year would be quiet I just thought I would ask your opinion. Yeah, I also wouldn’t ask where I believe you need to put in the effort and find your own feet it’s part of the enjoyment of fishing which I think a lot of people don’t realise. Hi mat I’m new to this ,been out there 4 times not even a knock, out all hours think the wife might leave me even thought of buying a fish just to keep her sweet😂😇any ideas, john
Hope you do not mind me asking? But is there any particular reason that you do not seem to use a swivel on the end of the line ? But seem to favour a straight connection to a plain clip line to lure. I was wondering why ? Is it more beneficial ? As I am old school @ ( 68 ) and have always used swivels. Looking to get a new lure rod 🤔 as my old faithful got shut in the car door, yep er' indoors shhhh. Been looking around, today's market seems to be a veritable minefield of choices. Looking to up 50 grm max though, and maybe a somewhat lighter one for the very light lures say 5 to 15 grm. Any suggestions or thoughts greatly appreciated 🙏if you have any spare time. Many thanks. Les.
Hi Les , the swivel will cause the lure to spin on the retrieve the weighting in the lure and the lip on sinking lures are designed (loosely) so they are in direct contact- I’ll do a video showing this As for rods it does depends where you fish but something close to 9- 30g takes cares of 90% of my lure fishing. 9ft is a good standard choice. But your in the right track with the weights you mention. Ofcourse budget dictates your choice.
Hi I've been watching your lure vids and they are very good and inspiring I do bait fishing but always wanted to spin. Im in bognor regis but unsure where a mark for bass would be
Give it a try then ! In all those videos we discuss the sort of features, tides and conditions that produce a bass ! If it was me I’d take a really light set up to pagham and find some good tide runs where the water narrows , I can see some likely looking spots from google earth to at least try -
@@SaltwaterAngler hi thanks for responding much appreciated I just purchased today the patchinko blanc 125 The place that you are referring to i believe is the mouth between Pagham and church Norton.
Great video! I was just wondering, if your soft lure is too light to reach the bottom, (in my case I’m using a sidewinder). Should I add a weight to it? Thank you.
Really good question- something I’ll be talking about I. The next video, yes ! Add what ever weight it takes to put that sidewinder to be retrieved to look like a bait fish where the bass are feeding
Thanks for another good video. Noticed you had a "Jig Skin' on one of your lures - have you done a video on these, are they any good and where in UK can you get them ? Cheers
@@SaltwaterAngler OK thanks for your reply. I was also thinking of altering the colours of lures bought on a whim but now regret the colour choice. Many thanks
Can you catch pther fish in the uk in the sea using lures? Ive just got all the gear and been three times using bait (worms mackeral and squid) - diddnt catch anything but i think its because im to impatient to just sit there and watch the rod. So i love the idea of lure fishing but dont want to be limited to just one fish, if i ever catch any 😂
Hi Matt. Thanks for the video/s. I'm based in Northumberland. Do you know of any good Bass spots near me? The Farne Islands nr. Seahouses has a huge colony of Grey Seals, so maybe the Bass, if they have any sense, would avoid the area!
Officials this with a no take from December . Recreational bass fishing Recreational fisheries, including from shore, in ICES divisions 4b, 4c, 6a, 7a to 7k are limited to catch-and-release only during 01 January to 29 February and 1 December to 31 December. From 1 March to 30 November, not more than two seabass may be retained per fisherman per day. In recreational fisheries in ICES divisions 8a and 8b, a maximum of two seabass may be retained per recreational fisherman per day throughout the year. The minimum size of European seabass retained shall be 42 cm. I would consider only taking fish over 47cm in season anyway that extra few cm can be crucial as they are on the way to being strong spawning fish. The legislation isn’t updated regularly and it will change again I’d imagine one the ifca consolidation has finished
Just a question, is it really so necessary to have 3 trebles on a lure ? I'd prefer to use big single barbless so if I lose a few fish at least iam never harming them
Much discussed here on the channel. Effective and I’ve had lost fish on singles snaring the fish leaving them possibly harmed. Also trebles can leave a trailing hook that damages bigger fish. Best results happen in strong tides. So the answers aren’t a simple as most people think. It’s not necessary to have trebles as you say but you may be harming them with singles also. I’ve landed hundreds of bass with no problems with trebles easy enough to unhook with occasional issues. You ask a good question
Can I use snap swivels for lures fishing for sea bass? IVe done a bit of research and some say its fine since its a fish and were overthinking it. And is only notciable visible in ultra crystal clear water. Whilst some say it disturbs the action and spooks the fish. Its a lot quicker to use snap swivels to change lures. Also would a 6 inch sidewinder skerries eel be too big for sure fishing for bass in an estuary and beach?
Yes you can use the snaps no problems. But i can recommend the breakaways mini lure clip for strength and ease of use. It does effect the action or rather the control you have over smaller lures but negligible. A 6” bass will attack 6”lures so I’d have no problem using side winders and I’m tempted to use giant lures sometimes
As a general rule each mark will have its own better tides, so basically I don’t know. I prefer a flooding tide but again it’s best to get to know the area

Ha thanks, sorry for late reply again Think theres a delay -
No need to start lure fishing yet people start far too early with bass not chasing the bait fish in any numbers. I cant get excited untill june with the water temperature warming up and the first mackerel arive - then the bass will switch on to bait fish.
dont ask Nick he knows nothing !
Hi Matt
I'm going on holiday to Weymouth, Chisel Beach. I'm a fresh water angler, but I've always fancied a go for bass. Is this area any good for bass fishing?
Thanks
Pete
Great video thank you just watched part 1 and two live in littlehampton go out on the paddle board and try fish from beach too never caught one I saw a few when I was out on the board but just can’t catch them not sure what I’m
Doing wrong using right rod a lure I venture out to the end of Rustington rock groins fish them but never anything :(
it will happen when you least expect it
@@SaltwaterAngler let’s hope so because currently I feel it’s just water no bass. I saw that bit about you saying they can come really close hopefully I’ll get lucky
Hi, great channel full of info , im getting back into sea fishing and was wondering have you ever used a metal devon minnow for bass fishing, only asking because i have a few kicking around many thanks.
Well worth a go ! For nostalgia if nothing else , I have used them In the past yes.
Great video, what is the name of that rod with the blue on it? Cheers
Favorite colbalt, there’s a review of it on the channel ,
Nice, spot on. 👍
Thanks Johm
Thanks for sharing 👍
No problem 👍
Hi , great channel :) could I ask what lb braid and leader you’d recommend using ? Many thanks
Good video ..learnt a bit about lures ..I do like the fly thou lol
Yea tha flies will see some action this year too ,
Very informative, thanks.
When fishing water that isn’t very clear, would you recommend surface lures, or something like a savage sand eel ?
The areas I like to fish in Devon are quite often pretty murky.......
Try everything when it’s like that !
Ive not fished for years and Ive just dusted ogf my rod and reel. I live in Galicia in Spain its my first time fishing for sea bass. Any special advice for the area. Im on the north coast crystal clear water with reef and beaches everywhere.
I’m no expert in Spain. Anyone able to help out here
Excellent series and just what I was looking for.
Hi Matt love watching your videos if I'm using mono 15lb line do I need a shock leader will only use very light lures.
No shockleader, fluorocarbon useful though if you have braid
any recommendations on best fishing spots in Sussex and Brighton ?
Have a look at some of the other videos on this channel. Initially we were a fishing marks channel there should be plenty to point you in the right direction.
A silly question,Do you need to rinse your reel after using it ?
I’m learner lure angler river fisherman, btw good informative video’s 👍
Yes rinse your reel - Im bad at this though
I really appreciate your response and advice, I’ll keep you updated on if the marks I have in mind will work! Good luck out there Matt!
@@JoshLucas247 I’m in St Leonards. Moved here a few years ago from Poole in Dorset. Took me years of trial and error to work out the bass fishing marks and conditions along the Dorset shore. Back in the day we never had resources like this to learn from. We had to work it out for ourselves of go with more knowledgeable friends. However it did bring a degree of satisfaction to your fishing when you did begin to work it out. I intend to get back into fishing this year and do some lure fishing too. If you want company give me a shout!
@@rbbea hello buddy, yeah I would be more than up for that! It's always more satisfying finding your own way especially when you see results at the end of it!
another great video, thanks!
Thanks for watching Robert
Great vid mate
Thanks Olly
Hi mat I’m new to this ,been out there 4 times not even a knock, out all hours think the wife might leave me even thought of buying a fish just to keep her sweet😂😇any ideas, john
There’s always the next trip …..
Les.
Hi Les , the swivel will cause the lure to spin on the retrieve the weighting in the lure and the lip on sinking lures are designed (loosely) so they are in direct contact- I’ll do a video showing this
As for rods it does depends where you fish but something close to 9- 30g takes cares of 90% of my lure fishing.
If it was me I’d take a really light set up to pagham and find some good tide runs where the water narrows , I can see some likely looking spots from google earth to at least try -
@@SaltwaterAngler hi thanks for responding much appreciated I just purchased today the patchinko blanc 125
The place that you are referring to i believe is the mouth between Pagham and church Norton.
I have a Ryobi Slam 5000 and a Abu Garcia Diplomat 10-30g travel rod. Would this outfit be okay for going after Bass?
Yes you will catch fish but I’d prefer a smaller reel
Hey I'm an american going to the UK (Whitby) end of Sep/Oct for 3 wks. Any guides in that area that can show me the ropes.
Yes there are drop me an email on matt@saltwaterangler.uk and I can pass on some details of a well recommended chap.
Great video! I was just wondering, if your soft lure is too light to reach the bottom, (in my case I’m using a sidewinder). Should I add a weight to it? Thank you.
Really good question- something I’ll be talking about I. The next video, yes ! Add what ever weight it takes to put that sidewinder to be retrieved to look like a bait fish where the bass are feeding
okay thank you! I will be watching the next video:)
Thanks for another good video. Noticed you had a "Jig Skin' on one of your lures - have you done a video on these, are they any good and where in UK can you get them ? Cheers
Yes they feature in a few lure videos . They are Probably better to jaz up old tired lures than to totally think Bass prefer certain markings
So i love the idea of lure fishing but dont want to be limited to just one fish, if i ever catch any 😂
Love the video by the way ! Giving this a try next week
Almost every uk sea fish can be caught on lures. Pollack, coalfish, wrasse, bream mullet a good bet
Hi Matt. Thanks for the video/s. I'm based in Northumberland. Do you know of any good Bass spots near me? The Farne Islands nr. Seahouses has a huge colony of Grey Seals, so maybe the Bass, if they have any sense, would avoid the area!
a im afraid my knowledge doesn't extend that far, its well worth joining B.A.S.S to find like minded locals
@@SaltwaterAngler Thanks for taking the time to reply
Super useful! Cheers
That’s good to hear Richard
What knot do you use to attach the lure clip?
Great video, cheers
Hi Richard tucked half blood knot, I’ll do a quick follow up of this knot
What's the rules around catching Bass in the winter months? between November and March?
Officials this with a no take from December
. Recreational bass fishing
Recreational fisheries, including from shore, in ICES divisions 4b, 4c, 6a, 7a to 7k are limited to catch-and-release only during 01 January to 29 February and 1 December to 31 December.
I work at the London docks on the Thames what method would you use for fishing for bass there are loads of them cheers ray
What are they used to feeding on there ? I’d make that my first question
Nice one.
I am about to go fishing in brittany, france. I didn't catch when to fish. on high tide? or between low-high tide?
As a general rule each mark will have its own better tides, so basically I don’t know. I prefer a flooding tide but again it’s best to get to know the area
I have given up after 3 years. I have spent hours in Essex spinning for bass …. Might pay for an outing with a guide
Good idea please don't give up though
Great vids . Thanks
Thanks for watching!
nice vid mate, where can you get those clips for changing lures
keep it up 🎣
There’s a link link in the description 🤔
@@SaltwaterAngler thanks mate, sorry , I didnt c it
You should be able to pick them up most tackle shops though
ok thanks
