      +Myles Coyne , I never paid attention to this. The fact that bathrooms exist at all in movies often surprises me because directors are often in so much of a hurry to keep the audience from analyzing what make sense that they forget about what makes their characters human in the first place.

    One thing I noticed with Butch.. that watch is obviously really important to him. I think the reason why, is all of his ancestors went through hell and back to keep it in the family. The same thing happens with Butch when he decides to return to his apartment, despite knowing full well that marsellus would have sent armed men to his place to kill him. He goes back anyway, he can't let his ancestors efforts to keep the watch be wasted. On his way back he meets marsellus and goes through that whole mess, all because he had to get his watch. He went through hell to get it just like his ancestors did.

    Pulp is often found in orange juice, OJ is a typical breakfast drink. The whole movie has the most important scenes taking place around breakfast. I often think of the phrase “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”. For example the opening scene occurs with Pumpkin and Honey Bunny eating at a diner for breakfast. Vincent and Jules arrive to get the briefcase in the following scene and Brett is eating Big Kahuna Burger. Jules says “Looks like we caught you two in the middle of breakfast.” The night after Butch wins the fight and meets up with his girlfriend Fabienne, she tells him how she wants blueberry pancakes with syrup for breakfast. Butch leaves and runs into Marsellus as he is crossing the street. Marsellus is carrying two coffees and a pink donut/pastry box, presumably for him and Vincent to have for breakfast. When Butch arrives at his apartment he opens up a pack of pop tarts and pops them in the toaster right before noticing Vincent’s gun and shooting him respectively. Following Marvin getting shot and disposed of we meet the Wolf. After Vincent, Jules, and the Wolf leave Jimmy’s house the wolf says to them “I’m taking my lady out for breakfast.” Finally, the ending scene is a continuation of the opening scene and now Jules, Vincent, Pumpkin, and Honey Bunny are all at the diner for breakfast.

      There's a decent chunk of analysis on Quentin Tarantino's films. A prevailing critique is that Tarantino's films are post modern, which makes sense. Most of Tarantino's films take place in a particular time period, references specific works and are clear homages to certain genres of film. There's always odd undertones and subtleties, like the doorbell, that break up otherwise dramatic films and make them funny. To pick one of his most recent films, Django Unchained has several oddities sprinkled throughout. For example, when the wife of the ranch owner is shot, she does not follow the trajectory of the bullet, rather she is flung out of the room. The following gunfight is brutal with tons of special effects and gruesome blood splatters, yet the woman is flung out of the room. It's the small things that Tarantino does that hints at a greater theme overall.

    • @SomeKindOfScum
      @SomeKindOfScum 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      AsiagoAssassin that, or the more likely theory that Tarantino just likes to put goofy things in his movies, because, I mean, come on, have you seen the guy speak or talk?

    there are two definitions for 'Pulp'
    1. A type of cheap paper comics were printed on, Pulp Fiction.
    2. A soft shapeless mass of matter.
    To me it's interesting that both definitions are relevant. The first is obvious but the second is even more interesting. What Pulp Fiction is is a series of random events as is discussed in this video. This is reflected in our lives exactly what pulp is: a shapeless mass of matter.

    If the film is making the point that life is random and full of coincidence, I think it's also trivializing the consequences of that randomness. Much more than trivializing the important things and "importanizing" the trivial, it mostly just trivializes everything, covering it all under a big "it's all good" blanket. Everything seems to work out in the end.
    Jules and Vincent don't die when they let their guard down and get shot at, Mia doesn't die from OD, Marcellus doesn't find out about it, not only does Bonnie never find out about Marvin, but Jimmy gets a seemingly hefty restitution from Wolf for using the blankets, and Pumpkin and Honeybunny rob the one diner with the "heroes", but they keep their lives and everyone's money. Jules even lets them take his money before getting his wallet back.
    The most severe consequence and the one thing that would have made the biggest impact is when Vincent dies, which happens halfway through, but then we never have to deal with that loss. It only serves as a minor point in the story of Butch dodging death and ultimately getting away with it, just like the rest of the characters. Not even having to run away from consequences, mind you. Running into Marcellus and ending up in the basement of the shittiest pawn shop in LA, he gets to watch his pursuer (the major mob boss he boldly double crossed) get raped, then he gets a pardon from him right after to go live his life without fear of getting hunted down. And he gets a sweet chopper. Then we're back to following Vince around to finish the movie, literally as if nothing happened.
    It's like the film is saying that everything is random, but shit will end up working in your favor. That is, if you're a dickhead criminal/junkie or have the balls to try to fuck over the dickheadest of criminals. Or just fuck him, as in Mia's case. Everybody else is more likely to randomly get their head blown off.

      GVilleAnarcho There is one thing to mention i feel though. Jules says he's quiting after miraculously not being grazed on the job with Vincent, then calls it Divine Intervention, and suggest Vincent to do the same. Vincent does't take his advice, and than later get's blown to bits by Butch while on the job. I felt that was just something to note, I'm not personally someone who believes in all that.

    • @alien.wooman4957
      @alien.wooman4957 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I thought the same thing! While I appreciate the notion that life is random and we have no control...oddly enough, everything worked out for the shittiest people in the movie. I was especially confused at the end when Jules chose the “better path” by quitting the industry and choosing to be a wandering hippie...AND YET, decides to let two assholes robbing a diner get away with it. The moral thing would’ve been to disarm them, not let them get away with it or at the very least keep them from taking the other people’s money. But he lets them get away WITH EVERYONES MONEY. What’s to stop these two from robbing another diner? It worked out great for them the first time! So I don’t think Jules became as “moral” or a “Shepard” as he thinks he was.
      I think Jules is actually going to escape responsibility for all the bad things he’s done by quitting and running away with the briefcase. He’s going to go completely neutral, no more killing, just wandering peacefully...at the expense of every person he killed to get this peace. He can try to turn over a knew leaf but the bottom line is (in my opinion) he’s STILL contributing to the evils of the world by shrugging, giving up and not doing anything about them.
      So the real lesson of the movie might be, in a nebulous, meaningless, corrupt world, full of pulp....good morality might be unachievable. Especially if the world doesn’t reward you for it. These cycles will continue to happen as they always have as man continues to survive on the backs of weaker men.

I had to finish watching Magnolia on my own DVD two years later, and I truly appreciate the achievement that film represents, but I was not enjoying sitting next to my wife reliving the unhappiest moments of her family life in a room full of strangers

    No coincidence to Butch encountering Marsellus crossing the street. 1) Marsellus was on foot with 2 cups of take-out coffee, so he was carrying one to meet someone close by 2) Butch expected bad guys watching his home so he snuck in the back way 3) an unused machine gun lay on the counter, tho we know from the diner that Vincent carries his firearm with him to the toilet 4) add it all up and you get:
    Marsellus figures Butch will return home at some point and chooses to personally stake out the most likely location. He takes along his trusted henchman Vincent as backup, but by daybreak it appears Butch isn't coming. They relax their guard enough that Marsellus leaves Vincent on guard alone and steps out to get them breakfast, seeing as Butch's kitchen has only Pop-Tarts. Marsellus would have left his machine gun on the counter rather than carry it on his coffee run. Not knowing of the back route, he would have left and returned by the front door, which is why he and Butch didn't cross paths until they met in the intersection after completing their respective errands.
    ERGO nothing random or implausible about Butch and Marsellus being in the same location that morning - in fact, it was totally logical for both men to be there, with only the minor coincidence of timing in Butch arriving home just as Marsellus had stepped out.

    Not to complain as I am enjoying this unique format, but many reviews of these popular movies already exist, and they have been analysed plenty. I would appreciate analysis of under-appreciated but accessible directors such as Tarkovksy (The Mirror, Stalker), Bergman (Winter Light, Wild Strawberries), Bresson (Balthazar, Mouchette), Mizoguchi (Ugetsu, The Life of Oharu), and/or Tarr (Sátántangó, Werckmeister Harmonies). I am looking forward to the interpretations of 2001: A Space Odyssey and the monolith in specific because it is my favourite structure in the whole of cinema. Thank you for reading.

    • @L3GIT_PENGUIN

      It isn't his soul, it's a light bulb.

    • @WisecrackEDU
      @WisecrackEDU  10 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      I've never been sold on that theory. Sure, the briefcase code is 666, but that's really the only element that suggests something other than a deliberately ambiguous MacGuffin. Some say that the bandaid on the back of Marsellus's head indicates the extraction point from which the devil took his soul. Usually people back this up by saying that somewhere in the bible, it says Satan siphons your soul through the back of your neck or something. But that's not accurate. Snopes has a great article on it.

    • @alyssap5656
      @alyssap5656 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I personally love the theory because it brings such an interesting element to the discussion that Vincent and Jules have about whether or not the bullets missing them was "divine intervention." Obviously, anyone who thinks that the bible says that the devil takes souls from the back of the head has never read a bible. But yeah, I agree that in the end, what's in the suitcase is really whatever you want to make out it be. I just wish it would have been discussed more in this video!

    Y’all got this wrong. The main point of this film is not about chaos, it’s about redemption of character as seen with many characters, and how some do and don’t mature past their flaws, and the consequences of those choices. The trivial and chaotic setting is a great element of the movie but not the message

They more likely to review Transformers:Revenge of the Fallen than 2001:A Space Odyssey, because there were more copies in existence now.

I understand Doing the general 'monotone voice narrates script' format may not sit well with you, but don't fix what isn't broken! Despite the whole 'aliens' thing...I found the humour enjoyable. I chuckled at many parts throughout the review. Now for what I actually came for (the F-F-Facts), they were well presented, and I felt newly enlightened by them. Overall, I feel this deserves a strong 4/20. Anthony Fantano out, pussy farts.
