Liz Truss resigns: Will Boris Johnson be next PM?

  • If a week is a long time in politics this one is seismic: by the end of next week Britain will yet again have a new Prime Minister.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
After all the political chaos of Liz Truss' tumultuous 45 days in Number 10, once again it is up to the Tory Party to choose who runs the country.
Nominations open now, and close on Monday. Candidates will need the backing of at least 100 MPs to compete.
When they get to only two candidates, the MPs will have an indicative vote between them. After that, if no one drops out, Tory members might have their say.

I'm guessing that most Conservative MP's know they are in serious trouble in the next election and Boris Johnson is their idea of a 'Hail Mary' tactic. He might save their specific seat, even with an overall rollicking by the voters. What they don't appear to have thought about is what damage Johnson could do as PM-again in the remaining time they have left. The other explanation is that these MP's calling for his return are trying to message a section of the party that they think they need to keep on good terms with. Again, have these MP's realised what the likely voter reaction in their constituencies will be to this? It's a bankrupt party mostly....just trying to stumble along far enough to collapse across the finishing line.

Abolish the hereditary bs titles that come with so much privilege and are even sold to anyone who’s got the cash. No more cash freebies for the monarchy. End the real estate developers’ market control and build affordable housing. Add more to public housing budget. No more housing that sits empty for more than three months. Here is a analogy.
      - Japan trades freely the world over, japan doesnt pay into a standover committee in a foreign land to do so, Japanese visa and immigration system isn't overridden by a standover foreign committee for 27 countries on the back of its international trading arrangements, giving 27 countries citizens unfettered access to Japanese jobs, welfare, healthcare, and housing and paying billions of yen for the privilege..
