Can Liz Truss survive as PM - expert explains

  • Liz Truss was always inheriting a difficult job, with a war in Ukraine, a cost of living crisis and a party in need of a fresh start after 12 years in power and the scandals of Boris Johnson.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
She’s certainly made a mark. Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini budget has been anything but mini, it’s had a huge impact on the markets, mortgages, gilts, and the pound.
It’s also had an impact on how her party and the public view her and that’s what could be really lethal.
Today, our political editor, Gary Gibbon, takes us through the first few weeks of Liz Truss’s leadership and how it could be ending before it’s even got started.

The truth is, Liz failed to understand that we are not in the 70s or 80s sort of financial era. We are in a totally different once-in-a-lifetime era with war and covid and everything else that spiked inflation and keeps doing so. She should have adopted rishi Sunak's economic policy. But instead, she thought that she knew better than anyone and wanted to force through her policy by taking a chance just because no matter what her policy did to the country, she would still be well-off financially and her life is secured with lifetime pensions after all these had ended- she is a PM after all!

We need an economist right now, not a hobgoblin and her brain dead 'kwasi modo' Kwarteng lacky... "growth, growth, growth". Yes there's this whole thing about sunak's wife (which is unethical but by no means illegal), but fundamentally Rishi Sunak predicted the dangers of mass fiscal stimulus with little regard for public finances and that's who I want as a prime minister. Its a shame a lot of politicians have such limited understanding of macroeconomics.

It was a bit off though, as has been basically all of the media. The road to her trouble starts primarily with the energy price freeze. When the details of that were put on display in the mini-budget, in addition to further tax cuts, that's what did it, but it was the energy price freeze that dwarfed even all of the tax cuts combined.

Excellent analysis of the current government position. I think that “U-Turn Truss” will try and save her position with several u-turns over the next few weeks and ultimately she’ll be replaced. If Boris Johnson was never fit to hold political office, let alone high political office, Liz Truss is clearly no different. Few modern politicians should be politicians and pretty much no Conservative MPs should be anywhere near British politics. The nearest that Conservative MPs should be to Westminster would Wormwood Scrubs, Bronzefield or Broadmoor.

If Truss loves cutting tax then reduce VAT to zero and increase income tax 5 Points at all bands. Who will gain the most? People who are the most needy in society. Who will lose the most? Those who can afford to lose. People on middle income could offset the loss through income tax to the gain in VAT gain.

But at least the 2 sportsmen did not damage the country’s economy and seemed to have inspired Britain more than Ms.Truss has to date.

I knew Eddie Edwards long before he took up ski jumping, he faced real challenges and disadvantages and worked honestly to overcome them, he prepared thoroughly to reach the standard he did. You have obviously never visited an Olympic class ski jump and looked down.
Comparing CaTrusstrophe and Kami-Kwasi's criminally negligent financial policy by slogan with Eddie is defamatory.

She's only a few weeks in and has already handed over all the power to a Chancellor she appointed two days ago. It's not going well for Liz.
The thing I think about is the small number of people who are directly responsible for this whole thing. Those Tory members who sat through months of Rishi Sunak telling them this would happen and months of deriding him for it. And now they're having to live their lives knowing that they have caused the mess he told them they would make. You have to have no sense of shame or embarrassment to be able to brush that off. I'd be thinking about it 24/7 if that was me.
