  • A year ago today, Liz Truss stood in Downing Street at the start of her premiership promising “action every day”. Over the tumultuous 49 days that followed, her time as prime minister was derailed by a series of U-turns, market shocks and a pervading sense of chaos. We go behind the scenes with Truss's biographer on the shortest ever stay in No 10.

I lived in her constituency until earlier this year and came across her a few times. It was clear that she was really sub par intellectually. She would have been a mediocre office manager at best. What she did have was ambition, a total lack of shame and the morals of an alley cat. Total disaster for the country.

To enjoy 'the morals of an alley cat' she would have needed much more agility, talent and appeal. As well as some fur.

That was obvious when she started sabre rattling over Moldova. A complete gobshite prepared to court any controversy, blissfully unaware of and unconcerned with consequence beyond generating a headline in the Daily Mail. She failed because she was operating way above her pay grade. Markets may like "Free Market" determinism because they make money out of it, but since 2008 they know its garbage and there's only so much of these handouts from the state they can absorb before the "medicine" kills the patient that provides the magic money tree that feeds them. Providing free money with interest rates massively below inflation is not "Free Market" economics, its corporate socialism and Truss and her ilk think they can provide infinite welfare for the rich with state subsidy from a nation teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Not even the markets buy that even when they profit from it.

She was essentially 'used' as a scapegoat for what had unavoidably become the end of any scope for continued extent of quantitative easing mechanism, that kept interest rates ridiculously low for more than a decade - it had to be shattered and reset.
The 'powers' decided that pretty much whatever she and Kwartaeng said or advocated would be 'used' and 'blamed' for what economically, had to be done anyway and was overdue literally any minute... nothing really to do with her or Kwartaeng at all..

While she was a very unsavoury character with no backbone under her skin and turn-coating for every single flag under which she served, there was NIL - ZILCH - ZERO net effect of her policies. This is simply an ignorant conclusion from those spreading the word, since policies to have a net effect there should be an economic cycle or significant turns in major value chains. The drop of the GBP against the USD was purely speculative, while the GBP to EUR FX showed a minor correction, with the FX now under the 'catastrophic' change during the very short tenure of Liz Truss. Europe remains the main trading partner for the UK, and the wet dreams of the BREXIT advocates represent the materialization of a disastrous move.

The tragedy is that the seeds for the disaster were firmly sowed in another democratic experiment. The Brexit vote and subsequent hardline agreement has tied our hands so firmly that people like Truss and her cronies became a real option for the Conservative party because as far as they are concerned there is no other option for growth. The truth is that until we re-visit our whole relationship with Europe we have absolutely no prospect for a healthy economy and the UK will slowly grind to a halt..

She had the right ideas and policies. But she executed them with unbelievable incompetence. Trying to do sudden drastic change all at once is always a recipe for disaster. It freaks people out too much and p1s3s people off too much. You have to do change gradually so that it doesn't create a sudden shock or panic to the system. Announcing major tax cuts immediately after announcing a massive spending hike on energy policy, that followed previous major spending hikes by Boris for C19, was monumentally foolish. It's no surprise the financial markets freaked out and panicked.

Every prime minister since Cameron has been an Oxford University graduate. Two of the five, Johnson and Truss have proved utterly incompetent, Cameron was barely capable and gave us the Brexit vote, and Theresa May, although honest and conscientious, didn’t have all the qualities for the job. Judgement remains to be see on Sunak , although the schools issue among others does taint him.
The time has come to ask whether Oxford University, and particularly the PPE course, still remains a platform for producing decent ministers in government, or the laurels it rests on are rotting away.

John Major didn't go to Oxford, or indeed any university, not that he was a spectacular success as PM either, however he was in office for longer than Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss, and probably Sunak too....

Liz's problem is that she even looks subpar intellectually even though she may not be. The irony is that she is a free market politician, yet it was the free market that judged her policies so negatively in the aftermath of the mini budget.

This was nothing to do with Truss, its the high infaltion due to the war in Ukraine and the dumb push to net zero, stop falling for media propaganda that it was all her fault, they blamed her because they wanted to get their globalist puppet Sunak in instead.
