@@noahlbecker i dont care about the regenerative braking, the problem is that the brakes will start to fade very very quickly and also will be gone in a matter of a couple laps which causes you to fit new discs and pads gain. Also I find the car just to be very unstable looking.

@@danielhu6485 track is a very specialized use, where admittedly the taycan handles better. But the Taycan is slower, less range, horrible software, weak charging network.. you know things normal people care about in their day to day life.
And still is 3 seconds slower than a Alfa romeo giulia QV which has half the HP and costs less than half as much while also providing a luxurious Italian interior... I honestly expected more from the plaid as it's straight line performance is insane.. Seems like it turns as good as a yacht lol

Incredible performance for a production sedan! The power out of the corners and straight line speed is insane. The tires are definitely fighting the mass through the corners. Thus the lighter and even more powerful upcoming Roadster will have even higher performance and a lower lap time.
It really is enlightening to see the top comments of many true car and racing enthusiasts, who aren't here to bicker about gas versus electric, but set aside their differences to unanimously agree that what's important is how this dude is a damn good driver.

It was a decent lap, not breathtaking. But I’m surprised, I had higher expectations for the Plaid. Very, very slow given how much faster it is in a straight line than its competitors. Guess EV is still too heavy...even sedans with 400 less HP have almost the same if not faster time. Disappointing from Tesla!

That's not drifting. This car is just too heavy (and with bad tyres for racing). As powerful and fast in straight line, this is definitively not a real race car because it's a yacht on the turn

I just watched the new BMW M4 CSL do this lap and from what I can tell, the driver looked like he had a much easier time. Both amazing cars in their own worlds.
The car weights a fuckload. It's advantages compared to ICE are entirely flipped. It has essentially rockets strapped to it with an absolutely absurd acceleration, and is extremely stable and glued to it's trajectory. However maneuvering all that mass around requires some finesse and planning and it's absolutely not something you would expect when driving lightweight race cars. But remember despite beating million dollars purpose built racing machines, the plaid is still a spacious family car with a lot of range. What is concerning about the plaid's record isn't that it was unbeatable, if is that it was set by a vehicle that didn't actually have to compromise on anything else.
Now THIS is the proper venue for yoke steering -unlike on everyday streets. A racecar driver has his hands constantly gripping the handholds, and never has to turn either of them more than 90° to get through those racetrack curves. Superb handling by the driver! High five to him!

That seems terrifying. There's no gear changes and engine noises that you normally use to gauge speed and braking. That steering wheel would be extra weird too! Props to the driver!
That steering wheel looks like a serious pain in the ass. I guess the designers thought it looked cool, but it would drive me absolutely bonkers. At one point the poor guy had turned it past 90 degrees and it looked like he was going to break his wrists.

You got it, this video was of a $129,900 family car, straight from factory. I can't wait to see the same car run modified as Elon posted about with tire/wheel/aero and other changes. On the way home from school, Dad or Mom could offer to take the kids to the amusement park... but instead, find a safe place and take them on a ride they will never forget! If I get negative feedback about that, I'm okay, I pushed the limits but if I were a kid..... ( oh, I still am ).
Making a computer follow pre mapped lines and basic problem solving with handling characteristics is possible. Having an AI run a track with no input is a different matter and probably not there yet.
Must say, it is refreshing to see the speedometer in km/h for once! Awesome driving, awesome to see they used the yoke, awesome time for a family sedan! Plaid is probably the best car on the planet rn.

I cant stop watching this! The warp drive whirl of the motor and the shredding of the tires in the corners (sound like a tie fighter) are 100 times better than listening to the rumbling and revving of a petrol engine

Only 7:35 though. That’s 40-50 seconds slower than top supercars that Tesla so proudly claims it can beat in a straight line. Oh and it’s even slower than a lot of sedans with less HP lol. most proper race cars (f1-4, le mans, etc) have square-like steering wheels. the only difference is they only need to turn 360-270 degrees to fully lock, the tesla needs a full 720

It's that yoke, the tires, but also the yoke. Driver has no options but to keep his hands perfectly in one position, if he loses grip he better be a sniper to hit his hand perfectly on the small handle while things go south, otherwise he'll eat a wall.

It has to be put on a diet to lose weight. Basically gut all the interior, replace all body panels with carbon fiber etc. Shave off a couple hundred kilos and the cornering will be much better.

That kind of money would be an amazing down payment on a house, which appreciates. These sort of things are impulsive, emotional purchase choices, not logical ones.

So it's a much better investment than most other cars. The demand for plaid is through the roof. I'm sure you could sell it for more than sticker price right now

It doesn't matter how well a car retains its value, it just means it depreciates more slowly than others. But the depreciation is still downward. You might be able to make a quick profit flipping the car, but in 5 years that car will be mostly obsolete and worth less than half of what it was new. A house on the other hand, will retain its value and appreciate over time. My point was, new cars are not 'investments'. You're essentially just burning money.
You can see from the video it drives nothing like a real sports car. It's not about speed or power on paper, it's about how it feels and how balanced it is.

@@Keneo1 I remember them mentioning they'll release an update later for the 200 mph limit. I think it's limited around 155 mph which is funny when the car gets there in a little over 9 seconds.
It's limited, waiting on tires that can take 200mph. The motor is held together with carbon fiber wrappings.

I just watched the new BMW M4 CSL do this lap and from what I can tell, the driver looked like he had a much easier time. Both amazing cars in their own worlds.
This guy is controlling 2.2 tons. So it is a bit harder. If the battery had a better energy density things would be a lot different.
The car weights a fuckload. It's advantages compared to ICE are entirely flipped. It has essentially rockets strapped to it with an absolutely absurd acceleration, and is extremely stable and glued to it's trajectory. However maneuvering all that mass around requires some finesse and planning and it's absolutely not something you would expect when driving lightweight race cars. But remember despite beating million dollars purpose built racing machines, the plaid is still a spacious family car with a lot of range. What is concerning about the plaid's record isn't that it was unbeatable, if is that it was set by a vehicle that didn't actually have to compromise on anything else.

Now THIS is the proper venue for yoke steering -unlike on everyday streets. A racecar driver has his hands constantly gripping the handholds, and never has to turn either of them more than 90° to get through those racetrack curves. Superb handling by the driver! High five to him!
Seems like there is excessive "play" in the yoke steering. Would be easier to take corners with less play.

I recommend renting a Ring Taxi, professional driver that pushes beyond what I would do. It was incredible.
Pretty amazing considering the fact that it's using relatively normal sport 4S tires and no spoiler at the back. Add semislicks and a spoiler and you'll have some fun numbers
Also add carbon brakes, which it also didn't have, and hopefully tesla can unlock the speed limiter too as it could have gone faster in the straight.

That seems terrifying. There's no gear changes and engine noises that you normally use to gauge speed and braking. That steering wheel would be extra weird too! Props to the driver!
That steering wheel looks like a serious pain in the ass. I guess the designers thought it looked cool, but it would drive me absolutely bonkers. At one point the poor guy had turned it past 90 degrees and it looked like he was going to break his wrists.

You got it, this video was of a $129,900 family car, straight from factory. I can't wait to see the same car run modified as Elon posted about with tire/wheel/aero and other changes. On the way home from school, Dad or Mom could offer to take the kids to the amusement park... but instead, find a safe place and take them on a ride they will never forget! It's not that hard to make an autopilot for a known track.
Making a computer follow pre mapped lines and basic problem solving with handling characteristics is possible. Having an AI run a track with no input is a different matter and probably not there yet.

I think what impressed me the most was how little time he spent actually accelerating. Out of the corner, and by the time he was straight he was letting off and coasting to the next corner!
Only 7:35 though. That’s 40-50 seconds slower than top supercars that Tesla so proudly claims it can beat in a straight line. Oh and it’s even slower than a lot of sedans with less HP lol. I remember hearing a Tesla fanatic saying that the roadster was going to be faster than a formula 1 car around a circuit. Good luck, it only has to be about 3 minutes faster than this XD.

This driver is just friggin' pushin' it. The tires are going to be shredded at the end of the run. So much more difficult without the feedback from the engine sounds. Would be nice to have a camera on the speed-o-meter. Wonder how much battery capacity is left after that run.
Honestly, for a car THAT powerful, you really need carbon ceramic brakes if you’re going to be taking to the track like that.

most proper race cars (f1-4, le mans, etc) have square-like steering wheels. the only difference is they only need to turn 360-270 degrees to fully lock, the tesla needs a full 720

It's that yoke, the tires, but also the yoke. Driver has no options but to keep his hands perfectly in one position, if he loses grip he better be a sniper to hit his hand perfectly on the small handle while things go south, otherwise he'll eat a wall.

It has to be put on a diet to lose weight. Basically gut all the interior, replace all body panels with carbon fiber etc. Shave off a couple hundred kilos and the cornering will be much better.

That kind of money would be an amazing down payment on a house, which appreciates. These sort of things are impulsive, emotional purchase choices, not logical ones.

So it's a much better investment than most other cars. The demand for plaid is through the roof. I'm sure you could sell it for more than sticker price right now
@@indie Sure, people have been flipping cars for a long time. It always happens with new cars, preying on those who can't wait for more to make it on the market. It doesn't matter how well a car retains its value, it just means it depreciates more slowly than others. But the depreciation is still downward. You might be able to make a quick profit flipping the car, but in 5 years that car will be mostly obsolete and worth less than half of what it was new. A house on the other hand, will retain its value and appreciate over time. My point was, new cars are not 'investments'. You're essentially just burning money.
