I used the gulp sandeels in the manasquan river Sunday and went through a pack in a few hours. Caught about 20 shorts. Had one keeper on a 5" red salmon gulp grub and 1 oz. Pink spro bucktail. When I ran out of sandeels, I started using the 4" red salmon swimming mullet
Something to try next time you use Gulp Sandeels...... cut off the front part of it where the hook has gone in and torn it up. I've had a couple other fish hit it afterwards, and just helps with preserving your bait a bit longer
i wore fishing gloves for years for reasons like you mentioned and my friends who fish with me always busted me about it but now they would cry like babies if they forgot there gloves because they never fish without them...holding the fish is so much easier especially with other species..we had a great mackeral and bonito bite this past saturday and without gloves to grip them it was difficult..i never had to let one hit the deck..snatched em in mid air and unhooked them..great video
Thanks John. Great video. Good advise on protection, glasses and using a rag for sea robins. I noticed you have cut 4" off your rod tip. I missed the reasoning. Not enough jig action?
Excellent video!! Have you tried using the jerk shads John? They strongly resemble the sand eels but have a bit more body to them. Also I just recently saw 8" Gulp eels at a sporting goods store. Do you think a large sea bass or fluke could handle that? Reason I'm asking is I'm going out on a party boat this week and really wanted to target big fish.
How nice would it be if every fish spit the rig after you netted them and it just came free like that one? I know John was loving that, since tangled nets are his nemesis.
Hi John, thanks for the video. I heard the gulp bait you were using , but didn’t hear about the rod and reel . I currently don’t use a low profile baitcaster for Fluke , I generally use a light tackle St.Croix spinning out fit for back bay fluke in that area, however I went to switch to a conventional do to right arm problems. I think that’s a Tsunami slim wave . I actually have the spinning version. Can you tell me what type of baitcaster that is. I don’t own one and may want to pick one up without breaking the bank in case I don’t like it. Thank you again
You list a 6' spinning rod, trimmed 4 inches, with a baitcaster reel. Doesn't look like spinning guides and looks longer than 5'8". I like short rods in my outback also, how did you shorten your rod?
Hey John! A couple of things when you have a moment. What was your running line? This is the second video of yours where the reel and line had the same link. Next I noticed you don't have a power handle on that Accurist. Is that the Kayak config? And finally, I haven't seen you or the Jerks using your Tsunami Slow Pitch Acid Wrap rods in a while. Any reason?? Thanks in advance!
I just corrected those links. Thanks. I don't use a power handle for the light bay stuff. Running line is 15# Berkley X9. 10# is good too, especially in the bay. We've never used that Tsunami slow pitch for fluke jigging, but for stripers.
You are correct, John, my apologies. However, I wouldn't have made that mistake nor would I have had to ask you the question to begin with if you would finally acquiesce to publishing a tackle video similar to the one you did with your tackle bag. I would be very interested in knowing your go to rod/reel combos for different species and scenarios. What lines you prefer and terminal tackle you use for different targeted species. I'll keep lobbying and hoping. Thanks!!
No apologies necessary! The problem with such a video is that preferences change due to constant improvements in tackle. Berkley X9 line didn't exist last year, but it's my preferred fluke jigging line now because it's thinner than equivalent strength other lines and very smooth too. I really like that Tsunami reel that I used for casting from the bar video, but that's new too. I see room for improvement on the Accurist... I'm still on the Nexus for deep jigging, for now anyway. On the other hand I've used the same 9-footer off the beach for more than 20 years.
Understood and thanks! I don't get to fish as much as I would like so studying the gear keeps me connected to the sport. I just learned that you'll be at the Fisherman Magazine annual fishing show. I hope to meet you there, and if time allows, maybe I can pick your brain some more.
Hi John. Great vid! I'm pretty sure I know the area in which you were fishing, but I don't have access to a boat/kayak. Do you think its worth trying from the surf/marsh there?
@@tonysfishingadventures6725 I'm sorry but I'm sure Mr. Skinner would like to keep this information private. Plus, I'm not positive of the location myself
Fished that area for the last 20yrs, my buddy who moved to Oregon this March use to live in Hampton Bays, caught a lot of fish in that bay, gonna miss it.
OK John, LOL. You've shown and proven to us many times how, when a fluke comes loose to just drop it down and nearly always the same fluke will take the bait again. Hey, all those fluke look alike so maybe you're catching the same two fish over and over again, considering you seem to be remaining it the same spot where you are returning fish to the water. ???
I always grab the sea robins in the mouth with my thumb just like i do with the striped bass. They don't have big teeth and so easy to hold them like that.
He is explaining the layout because it’s not just locals that watch. I’ve seen comments from very far away. If he didn’t want you to know he would have avoided the bridge in the video.
Bluefin from a kayak! He’s not gonna spot burn his spot lol .Do some research, put in some time and you’ll catch some too. Either that or hire him for a charter trip. Man needs to make money too.
Got it. Sorry guys. I’m new to the kayak life but I’m a fisherman. Just got a new hobie this spring and love salt water fishing but I live in PA. Have been trying couple of spots in NYC including Jamaica bay. I respect Mr Skinner and love his vids. Tight lines everyone.
Love that your rockin the baitcaster thats what i prefer most of the time
Love your videos John. I have learned a lot from you.
So grateful for this channel and your dedication to education. Thanks John
I've been doing great in Hempstead bay on squid strips and spearing. Best fluke season in years.
Man all of those flounder looked huge
Great video!
Awesome to see the back bays coming alive with some bigger fish! Another great video John. Glad to see you having positive results with the new kayak.
I didn’t know they made the nemesis in
The 4in version. That’s good to know
You always have nice videos.. thank you!
Hi John,
Would you be able to show in your next video on your fish finder how to find fish spot.
Thank you,
Allen
The fish whisperer! I have NEVER seen fish caught like this guy gets em...too much
Nice video John. Happy to see the fluke back. They are back on the north shore too and only one sea robin on a 7 hour trip.
Looks like Shinnecock Bay and the Ponquogue Bridge on the horizon....
Nice bro
Good show John!
Dude you’re a freakin legend

Gotta ask, have you been approached by any sharks? Cape Cod is under siege and figured you may have a story or two! Thanks!
No.
Thanks John. Great video. Good advise on protection, glasses and using a rag for sea robins. I noticed you have cut 4" off your rod tip. I missed the reasoning. Not enough jig action?
Have you tried the new colors of gulp fire tiger and blue fuze

Those 8'' eels would definitely be worth trying. I put the Jerk Shads in my gulp cooler, but haven't tried them yet. Soon.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks. I will definitely give those eels a try then and let you know how they work out.
And look forward to hearing how the shads worked for you.
Bring a tube of super glue with you, it help keeping the bait on a little longer. We have the same issues with Yamamoto baits.
Are you on the barneget bay
It's NY
Oh ok. I love your videos. How do you set up your rigs
At the bottom of the video description there's a link to the rig tying video.
John any concerns on the back of the gulp packages labeled may cause cancer and reproductive harm and we are using these on the fish??
WTF mr.skinner! You flounder whisperer you. From surf I have caught zero flounder in Connecticut via the sound...fish envy eminent
fishing for fluke from shore is tough, fishing for fluke in lis in ct is tougher!!!!
Just started using the ‘swamp gas’ & ‘chicken on a chain’ nemesis & they both almost look like sand eels.
How nice would it be if every fish spit the rig after you netted them and it just came free like that one? I know John was loving that, since tangled nets are his nemesis.
Do u trim ur buck tails
Yes, if the hair is longer than the end of the Gulp grub I'll shorten the hair a bit.
Do you use the chesty or head mount for go pro?
head

I have links to all of the gear in the video description.
anything on the sound North Fork any good?
Not much this season. Worst season I've seen for the Sound.
Some great fluke action. How do you keep the robins off your line or do you just edit them out.
You can't. I don't show them, but maybe one robin for every 4 fluke this trip.
You list a 6' spinning rod, trimmed 4 inches, with a baitcaster reel. Doesn't look like spinning guides and looks longer than 5'8". I like short rods in my outback also, how did you shorten your rod?
My mistake. I just fixed it. It's the casting rod. It's about 5 8'' cut. I love it for this application, boat or kayak. Thanks for asking about it.

Yes, if you have access to the general area, especially near channels, it's definitely worth it.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Awesome thank you for the response
I noticed you have the teaser hook facing down. Is that designation something you do for flounder fishing specifically? If so why?
How do you like the kayak vs your boat
Hey John, where did you get your polarized prescription sunglasses? I've been looking for some good ones
Nice vid
Fished that area for the last 20yrs, my buddy who moved to Oregon this March use to live in Hampton Bays, caught a lot of fish in that bay, gonna miss it.

That was pretty calm, except near the end but still fine.

If you expect me not to know where this is lol by a bridge and a mile away is an inlet just say shinnecock man
he didn't say it, because thats called spot burning. now the googans will be there en masse
William gguhhgf trust their already there sadly. Someone cut my lure off by casting wit braid over my line ( they were on a boat I was on land)

Looks like moses too tbh
I learned something today. you're about ten minutes from my dock in a spot I usually buzz right past. I will be changing my habits.
james finnegan what state are u guys in?
ny
John Skinner Fishing wow I’m from NC and didn’t know New York has good flounder fishing !
John Skinner Fishing hey John where in NY?
Bluefin keep trying to get him to spot burn. 😂
