    The sea robin is a beautiful fish, first time I've seen one, a first for the Northern Stargazer as well. True John, the sea is full of surprises and we are blessed by the diversity of its inhabitants. Fishing is truly a superb sport to practice as long as we respect its rules. Catch and release is the way to go to preserve its stock for tomorrow's fishermen. Thanks for sharing.

    Good stuff John! A couple years ago I proclaimed myself a "northern stargazer expert" (I'm not proud of it 😄) as I caught a bunch of them over a 2 day period. You said you thought you were snagged...they bury themselves completely. I pulled steady tension and eventually you feel them wriggling. While reaching for my pliers , I had one bury himself completely right where the water touches the sand...in seconds.

    I had a similar experience last year wade fishing inside Hatteras Inlet (NC) with a buddy. My buddy hooked up and then I did and he got his fish in before I did. While in the process of landing my fish, my buddy exclaims, “hey, I got some weird sort of toadfish!” So I glance over and yelled “don’t touch that thing! “ I’d read about them years ago but in nearly 40 years of fishing the OBX and Chesapeake Bay, I’d never seen or heard of one being caught either. I told him about the spines and shock risk and he was able to break a twig off a nearby piece of driftwood and use it as a hook out. Cool critters but their habit of burying themselves up to their eyes in the sand gave me pause about barefoot wading

    When I was younger on the Jersey beaches around lavallette I used to be able to always find a couple stargazers at low tide on the sand bars. I know about the shock and painful spikes but was a kid and didn't care. We would walk the bar and dig our feet into the sand, when we would feel movent we would dig our feet down under the fish and pull it up and out of the sand. It seemed like we could find one every time we tried, not sure if they are still as plentiful.

    when i was stationed on diego garcia, chagos island, british indian ocean territory, the 2 fish i hated catching were the stone fish (very poisonous) and the moray eel (nasty, mean and they would puke on you if you pulled them out of the water) we usually cut the line on these. we used either cut bait, raw chicken, or raw bacon when fishing from shore or bottom fishing... world class bonefishing there.

    Hey John, do you use that little cooler to carry your Gulp when you wade? It's a great idea BTW; every other container I've tried winds up leaking. The cooler is the only thing that contains the juice when the Gulp packaging inevitably leaks. It's great on the kayak but when I'm walking the beach, it's gets to be a bit of a drag carrying it along.

What kind of power do they really have? Well he reached down and touched it and I thought I was going to drown from laughing. He grabbed the shocked hand by the wrist with the other and you just new it hurt like hell. My laughing was just in the moment and I don't wish injury on anyone but if you (All the rest of us out there) are going to fish be careful of the fish you don't know and even more of the fish you do.

    I think I'll visit from out of State to go shore casting. I am 100% catch & release only. I will cast from the sand only, walking the shore.
    Shall I look at a map to see how I go to the shore with my rental car?
    For one who's never been to Long Island ever.

      There were sandeels in the water, and both the Nemesis and the Gulp Sandeels on a plain hook are great matches. They were definitely preferred this trip.

    Glad that stargazer didn’t jolt you. You might have lit up like a Roman candle!
    I see that you’re using a red/orange Bucktail. Why the change from the white?

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many times the fish are feeding on crabs in the bay, so the orange bucktail makes sense near the bottom.

      John Skinner Fishing and that is why I follow you! Thanks John. Still using the same bucktail and dropper loop rigging since I first saw your videos in 2014. Heard Halk talking about sand eels, so a grabbed some. They’ve been the ticket for the last three days behind Avalon, NJ. FINALLY landing a 19” keeper today. It’s been very tough finding keepers back there this season.
