    Hiccup actually *_wasn't_* brushing the comments off. He just takes them because he's *_used_* to them. That's what his life was like for 15 years. He's grown used to the insults and being ignored and pushed to the side. He's learned to use quips to bite back a bit but you can tell in his body language that they do affect him a lot. He uses sarcasm as a defense because the village has instilled in him that he's too weak to physically defend himself. He's also one of the very very small minority of the village who actually uses his brain to get out of a situation, the rest use mostly brawn. Hiccup is quite smart and that's something a lot of vikings didn't like because that made him more different. And thus they've put down his intellect just because he can't swing a sword over his head.

      @trans_panda ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@KurNorock i think you might be the sensitive one if you think simply being upset makes people weak.
      Also, he was not brushing them off, it's a matter of *_body language._* He would hunch his shoulders a bit, he would duck his head a tiny bit, wouldn't meet their eyes. Someone brushing them off literally would just not react at all really, they wouldn't care. Hiccup does care, that's seen in his body language.
      Also, having mental illnesses doesn't make someone weak and the fact you seem to think that really makes you a closed minded person. Actually, these moments make Hiccup strong because despite all these comments that upset him he still pushes through to save those who berated and belittled him. Strong and selfless.

    42:35 That's the reason Toothless is really scary. For some reason, many people pay attention to his cute appearance, but completely forget his description from the book of dragons. He dropped to the ground a dragon that was 15-20 times bigger and heavier than him, who also stood firmly on all four legs, with one shot. If you start to look into the details, then you realize that Toothless is a damn scary combat unit.

      Another aspect it took me a while to figure out is that the two injuries are likely directly connected. If you see how Toothless catches Hiccup from a (much lower-stakes) fall at the start of the second movie, you see that he rolls into a ball around him, tucking his tail under where Hiccup's legs are. Because Toothless was missing half his tail, the only part of Hiccup's body Toothless's fireproof scales couldn't protect from the flames was his left leg. It appears the writers really did think of everything.

    Toothless has the traits of a cat; cats see you as a friend when you DON'T look at them; he's extremely fickle about food (which is fish); loves "dragon-nip;" chases a laser pointer; wiggled his butt when he pounced on Hiccup; ignores you when you try to get their attention...he acted a lot like a cat I had at the time (who was also black with green eyes).

      The lore behind it is as follows; Their entire group grew up together, and when the became older things became more serious to them and all became harder on each other and especially him because he showed less traits of being able to fight. Astrid doesn't despise him, but rather the fact that he himself is trying to put himself where he doesn't belong. He's trying to fit in where people expect him to, rather than doing what he really wants.
      When Astrid asked him, "...Are you serious?" And he answers, "Yes," she relises that he actually has nerve to do something that he chose himself. This is where Astrid begins to encourage him for the rest of the franchise. She's still just as competitive after that, as shown in the TV series, which kinda retcon the initial relationship and redevelop it, which is actually very good, considering that they were just in their mid-teens in the first movie.
      I apologise for such a random response, but it was an urge. All in all, Hiccstrid is priceless.

    Hiccup is actually a family name, his full name is Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the third. Hiccup the first and Hiccup the second were know in Berk's history as great vikings. Stoick gave Hiccup that name so that the strength of his ancestors would be with him... It just so happens that "hiccup" also means "mistake." Also, I don't think you remember what Stoick's plan was the entire movie, find the nest and destroy it. If the nest is gone, the dragons would need to find a new home, effectively ending the raids. Yyyeeeaaah, agree to disagree.
      She hated Hiccup's guts, everything about him, until he suddenly proved to be the top dog because he can tame dragons.
      Honestly, from a certain perspective she just seems like a typical gold-digger, if we're being extra negative about it. The moment someone turns out to have the most power/wealth/skill, that's the horse she bets on. The amount of vitriol she had for Hiccup until he gave her a ride in his flying super sports car equivalent was through the roof. "Okay, you're rich, I take back everything else I said about you before." - The result of her thinking he was driving a rusty tractor, only to realize he's driving the latest porche.

    • @en4833
      @en4833 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@LethalOwl No she didn't hate Hiccup's guts. Even early on in the film, we see she never actually bullied him, and even told Snotlout to knock it off when he was bullying Hiccup after the whole Monstrous Nightmare debacle.
      She was angry at Hiccup during training at the beginning because in her eyes, he wasn't trying at all. She was someone who always gave it her all, and so she disliked that Hiccup just flailed around, messing everything up. Perfectly understandable, in my opinion. They were fighting for survival.
      And on top of that, Hiccup was going to be chief one day just because he was Stoick's son, not because of any accomplishments of his own, something that probably angered Astrid to no end, given she's been shown to be someone who immensely values hard work. Again, very understandable. They were in the middle of a war. They need strong leader ship, something Hiccup hadn't demonstrated yet at that point.
      Astrid isn't a gold digger for liking Hiccup more because he's a dragon rider. It demonstrated to Astrid a side of Hiccup she had never seen before. It showed he was capable, that he was strong in his own way. Of course she'd like him more after that. It's perfectly natural to like capable people.

    I love this movie so much. It's always great to see someone else discover it for the first time. I love the narrative symmetry, the same questions, asked by different people at different times. Like when Gobber says that a dragon will always go for the kill, and then Hiccup says "So why didn't you?" Later when Astrid and Hiccup are standing on the cliff, Astrid says that the rest of them would've killed Toothless "So why didn't you?". Or how, in the early movie, Hiccup says "I just want to be one of you guys." Then, later, in the ring, he tells the dragon "I'm not one of them."
    It's little things like that that you don't notice on a first watch, or when Astrid first sees Toothless and she pushes Hiccup out of the way. She may not like him, but she's not going to let him be killed. Also the score for this movie is REALLY good. It's not always obvious when a movie has a really good score, but when it does, it can elevate a movie from being good, to being great.

    10/10
    One of the most Breathtaking Animated Films of all time.
    I watched How to Train Your Dragon about 5 times now, and it never gets boring. It actually keeps on getting better and better with with more and more views. This is a huge accomplishment for DreamWorks Animation, it might actually be its Best Animated Feauture it yet. It is an amazing experience to watch this film in Cinema. The 3D is amazing and at times Breathtaking. I may of had the most fun that I've ever had in Cinema watching How to Train Your Dragon.
    The script is really good and is has a lot of dramatic depth. This movie is for everyone. Adults and Kids will enjoy it equally and will love it at the end. This movie will probably become a series like Shrek. But I'm hoping this film doesn't get bad sequels like Shrek 3 and Shrek Forever After. Anyways this film will be most recognized for its beautiful animation.
    10/10 Highly Recommended

    If we look at it from Stoick's perspective, we see that it all makes sense, right now we are thinking Stoick is a dumb father for not listening to his son, but, imagine this, you see your son befriending a what-you-believed DEMON, and of course, you are not going to listen to his begs, because, well, he just tried to befriend a dragon, who has been at war with the Vikings for centuries. Stoick, is still (and always have been) the best chief for his people that we know of.

    Since you asked, typically, the larger a flying animal is, the faster it has to fly to stay in the air. Flying requires airflow over the wing in order to create lift. The faster the airflow, the more lift.
    Large birds such as condors and albatross' typically cruise at 50-70mph. And ancient giant pterosaurs such as the 450 pound (30ft wingspan) quetzalcoautlus probably spent most of its time flying around 90-120mph.

    Something some people miss about viking culture is that they were much MUCH less sensitive than modern day america. You ever hear siblings lovingly use every slur they can think of instead of eachothers names or how guys love on their male friends my insulting them? That's what their culture was like. Yes, for a dreamworks movie, they were insulting him and he was taking it to heart, but for the setting, everyone would be doing that to eachother at varying levels, and it would be affectionate. Their culture valued strength and resilience and bravado. Poking at your loved ones like that 1.made them less likely to be susceptible to it when it was real 2. gave them practice at being snippy back/intimidating and 3. helped curb some of the negative aspects of a valor seeking culture by consistently humbling people. "The tree that never had to fight for sunlight never grew tall or strong" is a quote I always liked about them.
    So yes, dreamwork movie, they are actually insulting him and he is taking it to heart/used to it, but the setting it's based in, that would be completely normal and they'd all poke at eachother like that too, if Hiccup was any more viking-like, he would be quipping back at them. Norse culture is where we get the earliest examples of people insulting eachother as a competition, flyting, the precursor to modern rap battles. Hell, Loki was the patron of it and apparantly was so good at it he once almost killed all the other gods by insulting them so bad. It's meant to built strength, and the insults are accurate, or percieved to be, but it's not meant to harm him, just to keep him 1.humble 2.less sensitive/manipulable to it and 3.to respond better to actual enemies doing it and turn it back at people. The norse valued strong tongues as well as strong arms.

    Fun Fact: The animators modeled the dragons and their mannerisms after cats! That's why they share similar eyes, react to grass similar to catnip, and purr. Some behaviors were modeled after dogs but Toothless was animated based on the animation supervisor's cat.

    I first saw this movie in the theater. At the time it came out (not long after Avatar) the movie industry was really pushing their modern (polarization based, rather than color filters) 3D technology. Most major studio movies were being released primarily in 3D, though 2D was usually still available. Most of them were a mixture of really gimicky scenes and stuff where the 3D didn't really add anything. This was the one movie I saw that I felt really made good use of the 3D possibilities to simply enhance the experience. Of course, there was still a lot of the movie where the 3D didn't really matter much one way or the other, but the flying scenes were just amazing. I was maybe even more impressed, though, by the way they occasionally used the 3D in unexpected ways to enhance small scenes. For instance, as the Viking fleet is headed out across the ocean to find the dragon island there was an establishing shot which showed the tiny fleet all in a line in the midst of a vast ocean. I think they must have done an entirely different animation in the 2D version, because the fleet was so small that in 2D you'd very likely not even notice it, but with the 3D animation they were able to draw your eye to the ships so that you were sure to notice them while simultaneously really enhancing the vastness of the surroundings. Anyway, if you ever get the chance to see this film in 3D I suggest that it's actually worth it.

    So, there's a video essay from Charles Cornell called "How to Train Your Dragon is a MASTERCLASS in Theme Writing," which talks about how they work with Toothless' musical motif and Hiccup's musical motif playing off of one another in the scene where they are first flying together, and how the music itself is telling the story every bit as much as the visuals, themselves. It is an amazing video, and it made me appreciate a beautiful scene and a beautiful song 100% more. I do hope you continue with the HTTYD series, they're all amazing!
    Also, at the moment, there are only three movies that are out, with a fourth one in the works. There are TV series and... the equivalent of TV movies, but there are only the three _core_ movies, with the rest just kind of building on them as a background.

    • @reaIixx
      @reaIixx ปีที่แล้ว

      The "fourth one" is not a continuation of the story. The ending of 3 is kind of impossible to build off of while maintaining the core aspects of the franchise. They're making a live action remake of movie 1

    I think this is my number three all time favorite animated movie ever. Watching Hiccup and Toothless grow together and learn from each other, and how Astrid puts together the pieces and figures out what Hiccup is doing, and even joins his side after being introduced to Toothless and spending some time with him. The cinematography when they assault the dragon's lair at the end with the fireball soaring through the cave, and the gigantic dragon at the end exploding into flames are some of my favorite shots of all time, in any movies, animated or live action, ever.
    And multiple scenes of this movie will make me cry every single time I watch it. Astrid encouraging Hiccup to stand up to Stoic, Stoic freeing Toothless and saving Hiccup, and Toothless saving Hiccup. All of that gets me very emotionally worked up.
    I love this movie so much.

    This scene always gets me, because of the music. Charles Cornell does a great breakdown of why its so good, which is who I'm lifting from.
    But the gist of it is, at the start of this scene, with Hiccup flying by cheat sheet, its his Theme playing, all very technical and by his worry. Then the discord as they break apart and fall.
    Then, they rejoin, but Toothless takes control and snaps out his wings to try and break, and we get Toothless' Theme instead.
    And finally, the cheat sheet is lost, and both Themes now mix, and we have Test Drive.
    Its just so good.

    I love how the end credits sound and look in this movie. The song matches the movie so well, and the drawings and old paper theme will always be my favorite

    I'm a first time viewer, and a big fan of Lammy! I hope him and his subtitles will appear more often!
