Thanks for covering Star Wars Galaxies. It was a great game that is still played today believe it or not. I played for many years. There's a lot more to the Jedi unlocking than just finding items. It was actually this extremely long drawn out process to even dip your toes in. Jedi in SWG were extremely rare, and extremely powerful. A Jedi could take on a full group of people alone, or solo kill high level monsters or enemies. (There's a great video on this topic "How Jedi killed star wars galaxies". I highly recommend watching it for the full story) Basically, you had to master the game for a "chance" to unlock Jedi. You had to master every profession (Combat or non-combat) until you found the random one assigned to you that grants Force sensitivity. You had to collect every exploration badge, and a bunch of other nonsense. The Devs wanted Jedi to be very rare, so this system was made so only very few would make it. But, as time passed. People wanted to play the Jedi in the Star Wars game. So, eventually. After the NGE upgrade. The open skill tree system was scrapped for single classes only. Jedi was now available from the start. You didn't get a lightsaber right away, but you were indeed a Jedi. I never had a Jedi myself. But I know they needed Holocrons to progress through their skill tree. These Holocrons were dropped by Jedi Masters that were not very common to find. Even if you managed to find some of these enemies, you had to have the best gear possible to kill them. You needed a group with everyone fully geared. Further limiting who actually gets a chance to acquire these Holocrons. You could buy these Holocrons for credits. But they were extremely expensive. So only the wealthiest players were able to either farm or buy Holocrons. Accounts with Jedi unlocked were often sold for hundreds of dollars. But if people found out you bought a Jedi, you were pretty much shunned by everyone.
Speaking of Patches that destroyed games, Star Trek DS9: Dominion Wars had one: It was the last patch released, and it ended up breaking the game. Hence why anyone who plays it only goes up to v1.4.
Well it kind of did go with it because a portion of it (FFVIII) took place in space...like Star Wars. Was the end of that portion of the countdown a clip from FFXIV?
@@AllardRT You're implying Episodes 1 and 2 weren't garbage (Episodes 1, 4 and 7 played it safe, episodes 2 and 8 were mediocre and Episode 3 was the only good prequel and the only good third movie in Star Wars trilogies) and that George Lucas never meddled in the development of video games like the Darth Maul game that never came out.
@@mattwo7 I'm not "implying" that, I'm saying that outright. They were not, unlike the sequels. But let's dissect: "1, 4 and 7 played it safe" - okay, first of all, 4 wasn't "playing it safe". It was the first movie to be released and it was a giant gamble on Lucas' part. One that paid off, but nobody believed it would be a success at the time. 1 actually went pretty far from the initial ideas just so the story of Anakin's eventual downfall could be all the more tragic. And it wasn't a blind rehash of 4. There are elements borrowed there, but they are remixed, reshuffled and played around, so it would be like poetry. And rhyme. 7 is the only one to actually "play it safe", being said blind rehash through and through. 2 had cool villains in Dooku and Jango Fett (not to mention Palps), great action scenes and set the scene for Anakin's heel turn in the next movie. It was also not a rehash of Empire, despite borrowing some elements and mixing them up here and there. 8 put more effort into hiding that it's a shitty rehash of Empire (with a scene from ROTJ thrown in for good measure) than 7, but ultimately was still a rehash. I'll spare you the rants about Luke and Snoke, but in the end we were left without a single good villain... and without a single worthy hero either. Also, ROTJ was good. I don't like Ewoks, but the stuff with Luke and Vader was God-tier. Also his "meddling" with the Maul game amounted to "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if he was working together with that Talon chick?" "But she lived like a century after" "Well it could be his clone" "Alright." The game wasn't even in production at the time. Unless you count him selling Lucasfilm to Disney (which is what got the game canceled) as "meddling", he was pretty hands off there.
The latest Heroes of Might and Magic had a lovely final patch which completely borked the AI and made it suicide its units. Always fun for a strategy game. And Ubisoft never rolled back to the previous (better but still flawed) version of the game nor did they bother fixing things or explaining them, they just broke the game and left it that that.
I got through the whole thing. It's the console versions that were in a mess. PC is okay for the most part, but there were glitches, the most comical being in some cars where you go over a bump and your player appears on the roof nude :D
I love the use of Final Fantasy 8's Esthar battle music for Star Wars Galaxies. FF8 doesn't get a lot of attention that I've seen, so I'm happy to see at least some allusion to my favorite Final Fantasy, however little it may be
Just remembered my Digital copy of GTA5 on the xbox 360 was an unplayable mess to just not running at all on the system yet the physical version runs just fine. My friend also had a the orange box on the PS3 which ran like arse compared to the 360 and PC version.
I know at least for me it was actually the opposite. I tried multiple disks and tries to get GTA V to run on the PS3 via physical disk and never worked. However, when I downloaded it to the system digitally the game seems to work as intended. Maybe it’s because of how big the game files are. Then again, that’s just a guess. I pretty much only have played GTA V on PS3 only, so I’d have no clue how it worked on PC and other consoles.
Wait...people still play the original Star Wars Battlefront 2 and it still gets updates, and the Online still works? Man I didn’t know this game was that popular.
yeah, it should be noted that online for games from thar era allowed private and 3rd party servers which allows it to work indefinitely. The fact that people are still playing it really shows how badly EA messed up with the reboot.
The online went down for a few years, then for some reason it got pulled back up - some internal dev studio or unit started reworking the online portion of the game to work with Steamworks. It's very *very* rough and scuffed, ,but yes there is still a fair number of players out there.
Honorable mention: Gran Turismo Sport once released an update with a bug that would wipe out your entire car collection if you quit the game at all even if it happened by accident or by an error. To add further insult, Polyphony actually brought microtransactions into the game right when the game was fixed even though it promised otherwise during the launch.
My lizard brain is happy Larry is finally talking about games I recognize, but I'm also worried he's selling out to appeal to younger millennials & zoomers. Next episode better be about British 16 bit games I've never heard of.

When Rockstar released that 1.21 patch people were saying that the bald character was a "hacker" running around taking peoples accounts. The guy who claimed it was just trying to gain followers talking about "Follow me on updates about the hackers!" That was the worst time in Red Dead even through all the broken ability card setups.
Destiny 2 update last year, that put the planned obsolesence in place in form of light caps for old equipment, and assurance that all following seasons would see old equipment become useless, and then added their own version of Battle Pass on top of that that is basically required if you want to get new exotics of apropriate power - that update cost the game more than half of its playerbase - me included.
I just knew that SWG would be on the list, hahah! Being an avid player myself, back in the days, I was one of those who sadly left the game because of these updates. I admit, I really miss this game. Spent hours playing it and I had so much fun!
Man I have such good memories even to this day of playing Star Wars Galaxies. My favorite thing about the game was the non-combat classes and the free-form method of leveling up and picking classes in general(which the Combat Upgrade squashed in favor of traditional 'classes'). Shame the game was lacking in just about every single avenue and the devs were slow as molasses at doing anything about it.

Yeah, I remember when the light saber was something to be feared as it could take your arm off. Now it barely bounces off of standard armor and maybe makes a delicate dent.
Overwatch for me, the updates made some of my characters unplayable or much less unenjoyable because if their constant pandering to the esports scene which is like 2% of the entire player base
To clarify some things on how you unlocked Jedi on SWG: The thingies you said you needed you don't technically need. You see in order to unlock Jedi you had to master 3 jobs that were random for everyone, the holocrons (that dropped from high level mobs) told you what jobs you had to, but you could if you wanted to just master every job. The problem was that leveling one job to master took forever and you had to do 3 of them plus there were at least 15 professions to choose. My brother narrowed it down to the Musician/Dancer jobs, hated said jobs so much that he just decided to not be a Jedi. The whole Jedi system was not thought out well but thats a whole other story.
It's worth reading Raph Koster's post-mortem on it. Basically Lucas were pressing them to have a PC Jedi by Christmas of the release year and the "master 3 jobs" was added just because they were running out of time to come up with quests to unlock Jedi. It was considered a huge error because the jobs were supposed to tie to different things people liked doing in MMOs, and now people might have to do one that is the opposite of what they enjoy, as happened with your brother.
Then there was Rockstar releasing a patch for GTA IV out of nowhere a couple years ago that did almost nothing except remove a bunch of music, and break compatibility with all the mods people had been using for a decade. (Of course, imo, GTA IV peaked with version 1.0.4 and it's all been downhill from there.)
@@efftee Yeah, but they made significant changes to the engine between 1.0.4 and 1.0.5 - and for the worse, as far as I'm concerned. Shadows were nerfed, and there was far more pop-in on buildings, among other issues. They lowered the sysreqs so that lower-end systems - at the time - could play, but made a lot of sacrifices in doing so that hurt the port long-term.
yeah, SWG was my bro's favorite MMO ever, he hated no DESPISED that the game was changed to mimic WoW, they could've been fine had they stuck to their own gig, but in worrying so much about their competition, they ended up being their own downfall. shame really, because there was some things that i really liked SWG, but i never put the time into the game that my bro did, cant help but wonder if he hates my fave MMO for SWG going to crap.
The irony is every time a new MMO comes along you will get people coming to play claiming to be bored of WoW. Then leave because it does not have X, Y or Z like WoW.

EVE Online did something of the sort too. The game used to have "boot.ini" in its directory, but one update made a typo and targeted the boot.ini in the user's C:\ drive. Guess what getting that update did to a lot of PCs on their next boot... The file in the EVE directory was since renamed "start.ini" to prevent this problem happening again.
Plus I will say, while Bethesda games are buggy, they do have a good eye for details in game, like you got to remember someone has to manually put all of those books on the ground in Fallout
Here's one for a follow-up episode, Larry: the Red Dead Redemption standalone expansion "Undead Nightmare" had a bug with the horse drifting to the side, so they patched it, only the patch broke the very first mission of the game, which now cannot be completed. To my knowledge, they never went back and fixed it, which means the game is completely unplayable to this day.
Assassins Creed Valhalla had one with a day one patch. The patch meant you couldn't interact with a very, very early NPC to further the story. The literal advice the devs gave was as it was so early in the game, to delete your save file, disconnect your console from the internet so it wouldn't download the update and play until you were past that point.
@@JHenry-nz7hy I didn't because I ignored the story and did a lot of exploring, and I didn't want to lose that progress. So I just didn't play the game until they had the patch ready

Cyberpunk taught me that all attacks are chokeholds. That's why I always adopt a T-pose and say "Let me go!" when someone punches, kicks, or shoots me.
I love how you said that maybe it was a good thing that people stopped playing that particular call of duty game. and to be honest if everybody was under the assumption that the option that says to reset your rank and level actually really meant it that probably meant that the vast majority of people weren't even playing the game so even no people weren't playing they weren't being left behind by others playing because nobody was playing anyway
Larry, you are one the best TH-camrs around and I love your work. The turbo horses had me laughing harder than I have in a long time. There is something I wanted to say about Cyberpunk 2077... I did not have any real problems with the game. We (fiancee and I) picked up two copies at launch for the Xbox Series X and PS5 *physical. I ran into a few visual bugs in the 160+ hours I put into it and I crashed once near the end. My fiancee did have issues with crashing as she was on the PS5. Thankfully, the load times were almost nonexistent making reloading a relative breeze. I believe the issue you're talking about only effect the base 8th generation consoles. It's not a defense of the game just our experience with it.
Cyberpunk is an exceptionally bad example of a game to base your opinion on. CD Projekt Red didn't want to release it in the state it was in, but investors and customers alike demanded it anyway because they were tired of waiting. Really, just ignore the big name Triple A developers. Anyone else - Nintendo, Capcom, indie devs - is going to at least attempt to put out a mostly stable and playable game rather than score a few quick bucks.

9:39 that choice of music is amazing, good video as always

@@AllardRT You're implying Episodes 1 and 2 weren't garbage (Episodes 1, 4 and 7 played it safe, episodes 2 and 8 were mediocre and Episode 3 was the only good prequel and the only good third movie in Star Wars trilogies) and that George Lucas never meddled in the development of video games like the Darth Maul game that never came out.
@@mattwo7 I'm not "implying" that, I'm saying that outright. They were not, unlike the sequels.
But let's dissect:
"1, 4 and 7 played it safe" - okay, first of all, 4 wasn't "playing it safe".
Also his "meddling" with the Maul game amounted to "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if he was working together with that Talon chick?" "But she lived like a century after" "Well it could be his clone" "Alright."
The game wasn't even in production at the time.
*Cyberpunk 2077:* "People can't complain about our game, if they are unable to PLAY it. It's genius!"

GOG and Disney put a new update that allowed server-based multiplayer. The best part is the update came out not long after EA's BF2 came out.
@@kidthorazine DICE salvaged battlefront 2 I recommend getting into it now it’s a much better game.
Gran turismo 6 has an update that make it unplayable. And I think that it was never fixed

Your comment about how when people screw around with what works with Star Wars always leading to screwing it up is a VERY good point, Larry. 😉

Man I have such good memories even to this day of playing Star Wars Galaxies.
My favorite thing about the game was the non-combat classes and the free-form method of leveling up and picking classes in general(which the Combat Upgrade squashed in favor of traditional 'classes'). That fortunate son midi is SO distracting lmao.
Last time I was this early the intro was fast-paced.
It was considered a huge error because the jobs were supposed to tie to different things people liked doing in MMOs, and now people might have to do one that is the opposite of what they enjoy, as happened with your brother.

if your game is so buggy it makes Bethesda look good you know you have discovered a whole new level of buggy shite.
I returned cyberpunk after 100 hours and I have no regrets. I’m just going to play old games now and I have zero faith in new games anymore.
Cyberpunk is an exceptionally bad example of a game to base your opinion on. CD Projekt Red didn't want to release it in the state it was in, but investors and customers alike demanded it anyway because they were tired of waiting.
