  • Halsted Street is one of the Chicago area's longest streets, stretching for 32 miles from the north Chicago neighborhood of Lake View East to the south suburb of Chicago Heights. I go a little bit past Chicago Heights on Illinois State Route 1 until you start seeing cornfields to complete the "Hood to Country" concept.

    Although North Halsted is very posh and boujie, they do get some armed robberies and carjackings during the day. You should always be self aware. I do love this city. Some of the best things about it are the food, sports, and architecture. Appreciate Nostalgia Tours Radio and the drive Chris!👍

    I spent a lot of time in tanker hauling career on Halsted (IL-1).
    1:31:21 I used to drop off intermodal tank trailers at Canadian National's Harvey Yard in via 176th Street. Dixie Rd is worse if you want to see blight in Harvey lol.
    1:32:40 I also used to deliver product to Ink Manufacturer in Homewood on the other side of I-294. I used to take lunch at the shopping plaza nearby.
    Thanks for bringing back memories of my time on the road tanker hauling.

    This was a most enjoyable two hour run. In fact, it was so enjoyable, I ran it again a second time.
    Your musical selections were excellent. I picked up a few hints here of a few ones I'd like to give a further listen to again.
    I can't pass up the irony of where you put some of these musical selections. For example, approaching the currently bad Englewood area, you play a piece from "Mean Streetz". As you get deeper into Englewood, you switch to another musical selection from "Evil Streetz."
    Englewood was my home area in the 1950s when the 63rd and Halsted St. area was extremely prosperous and safe. Now, I would only "drive through" using Google Earth, or, here with your excellent video.
    My old boss summed up the area beautifully. "If you are on Halsted and north of 59th street, you're probably in trouble, but if you are south of 59th, you're definitely in trouble!"
    ... Keep these videos coming. They are great!

    • @user-xo2mw5jr5x
      @user-xo2mw5jr5x 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@tomcat630 I'm confused by people saying Western is the longest "continuous" street in Chicago. Continuous as in Halsted and other longer streets have imaginary lines on a map but no physical street. Or is Western just the longest street in city limits?

    • @jeromewysocki8809
      @jeromewysocki8809 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I believe Western Ave. starts up on the boundary street between Evanston and Chicago. In Evanston, the street is called Asbury, if my memory serves me correctly.
      Anyway, Western Ave. starts there (at Howard St. ?) and runs straight through from there, to 119 th St., I believe. The street continues south of 119 th St, but it is in Blue Island, IL, not Chicago.
      So, Western Ave. runs continuously through Chicago, from Evanston on the north, to Blue Island on the south, making the claim that it is the longest running street through Chicago, without any name changes in that street.

    South of Canaryville starts to change, lots of development in Canaryville now, perhaps because Bridgeport has become pricier than past. Chinatown is clearly going and heading further West than past. Hard to believe 63rd and Halsted used to be 2nd busiest shopping area in entire city. Hope some of the redevelopment efforts start to pay off eventually.

Like 3700 whatever North Halsted it's a famous IHOP everybody complains about it but all the drunks go there and eat in there. And it's been shut down once or twice in the past number of years for health code violations.

    Many of the Chicago streets like Halstead originate in Chicago and run south to the southern Cook/Will county line, which runs along 34th street in Steger. Some of the ones I remember are State, Torrence, Cottage Grove, and Western Ave. When we lived in Steger in the early 50s, I had the choice of attending Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights ( and Cook County ) or Crete-Monee H.S. which was in Will County. (Graduated from Bloom in 1953) My draft-board is in Joliet, which is the Will County seat. (I don't worry about the draft much anymore - served in the Marine Corps - 56-59, and besides I'm 89. If they want me now, Good luck with that !)

    Plus I ride the number 8 Halstead bus. I just remember when I moved here I rode on the number 8 Halstead from Halstead and Waveland where it turns around at Broadway. I'd write it all the way south to 79th Street. Then I got off and took the extension which is the number 8A South Halsted bus. Then I would ride that all the way out to like 127th Street or something. 119th or something. Then I got on the 352 South Halsted bus. That's the Pace bus. And I rode that out to Harvey and then I got on the 370 Pace bus which would take you farther south at least I think those are the bus numbers but I know the eight and the number 8A and the 352. But you could take a bus all the way on Halsted Street several buses. You could still do that today.

    Halsted Street is Illinois Route 1. I included Rt. 1 during a few of my bicycle trips in the '70s. During one tour, I was invited to stop by a friend's home in Danville. I lived on the northside at the time. I picked up Rt. 1 on the far southside of the city in order to avoid the bad neighborhoods. It was a great route to Danville.
    I eventually returned on the same route, but, again, went around the southside as far west as Austin Ave. to avoid the bad section of the city. Then a few years later, when I returned from Florida, I picked up Rt 1 at Cave-In-Rock. Today a drive that route on my way to Wisconsin.

      Just because you you are filming on TH-cam doesn’t give you a license to be condescending and an overall jerk! Maybe that kid who flipped you the bird had a good radar! Did you bother to drive through the neighborhoods and did you do research on the areas other than what you THINK (questionable) you see? You only drove down Halsted! Notice that the city of Chicago and the areas outside are under siege! You know what you are talking about before you decide to film.

      Albany Park isn’t the far NW side, directionally is North and West, but those from the far NW side would not count areas like Albany Park as far NW side. Norwood Park, Edison Park, Dunning, Mont Clare, etc, are far NW side, much closer to O’Hare and miles farther West.

    Glenwood is actually pretty decent and quiet. That’s stretch of Halsted makes it look worse than it is. Lots of parts of Chicago are like that. The neighborhoods are nicer looking than the Main Streets. The problem is that a lot of these main streets lack businesses.

    I wouldn’t turn my back in no one’s neighborhood. It doesn’t matter how clean and shiny it is. It’s not paradise. People will still hate.
    And please sir don’t compare neighborhoods. People that live in slums would love to do better, if given the chance.

    Coming from North to South....1 fact is Chicago heights hits before you get near Crete.... And for your factual info, it is no worse out south than it is North....and Crete is really the quiet Country Suburb off of 394. You driving down a street and speaking to a few People does not give you complete knowledge of any area. Parts of Chicago Heights has history and a lot of the People still reside there and have lived there over several of Decades, not to mention you have the College right there in Chicago heights on Halsted.... True some things have deteriorated but that's because of business owners Aging, dying and retirement and their Children not interested in carrying on the business, and of course the Economy....
