As a Chicagoan, I'd say Western is more the backbone of the city. Halsted is more like the jugular. But overall, a cool look at a slice of what is an enormously diverse city. No 22 min documentary can capture the entirety of Chicago, but this is a nice glimpse.
+Emptying my Nine typically (at least in my experience) Chicago natives when talking about corners or general areas say the ordinal street name first. For example: "51st and Blackstone" or "79th and King Drive". I live in the Chatham neighborhood, and I rarely ever hear someone say the name of a street before an ordinal street name, unless there are no ordinal streets, like "Marquette and Vernon"
+Christopher Holloway hilarious you said 79th and King...I used to live right over there. Anyway...im a few minutes into this doc and it seems lame as hell.
+Frank Jaegar Chicago is nothing like Detroit. Chicago still thrives, but it is messed up. Chicago has many different neighborhoods. There are a lot of cool places to go pretty much all over the city. You just have to know where to go. Many places in the city are dangerous. If you look like you know where you're going you'll be OK. I do cringe when I see tourists with their guard down. I lived most of my life in Chicago, and I still live in the area. It still amazes me how it thrives in spite of punishing taxes, high crime, corrupt government, etc. It's the people that make it happen.
+Eddie X exactly, I'm from the area and when I read this guy's comment it did nothing but disturb me because of how wrong he is. thanks for the support.
People talking crap about Chicago and have never been there to see how great the city is even though it has some really rough areas hahahaha. Stop drinking the koolaid.
This is wonderful. As a Chicagoan, this is legit document of a specific part of our city that is HIGHLY underrated for it's diversity, food, and character. As a comedian, tour guide, and broadcaster and most of all a Chicagoan, this is something to look at if you want visit. The Polish sausage is a must!
"Rich with pride and soul" describes Chicago perfectly! Born & raised and walked these streets of this city for almost 48 years...and will take my last breath here as well. Living here takes alot of grit & its certainly not made for the weak. Definitely a proud Chicagoan for life 💙❤
Born and raised Chicagoan approving this doc. I'm glad yall covered all of Halsted from south to north. I've been to Jim's polish stand a million times. Open 24hrs, greasy, and super cheap, perfect after the bar food.
Wow great video Vice! Wish you guys could do this for several more streets in Chicago like Western or Pulaski or Chicago ave. I know most people not from Chicago have a negative view about it but i LOVE my city. Don't believe everything you see in the news, It only shows a SMALL overview of the whole city.
+DEZ n00ts nope, actually live in Albany park. and if you hate it then leave. is it a perfect city, god no not even close. but I still love it. born and raised. also, nice screen name. and I'm not being sarcastic, the Dez Nuts jokes always get me, just like the that's what she said lol
***** If I don't like it leave? Shallow since I have family and kids here... I'm realistic so I can tell you, I can't IMAGINE living anywhere else, but this city would be PERFECT with: A LOT less government corruption and careless spending, Better school funding and after school programs for minorities(instead of SHUTTING DOWN 110 schools) Take away Cook county Tax, Liqour Tax, Gas Tax and lower taxes to what the SURROUNDING states are, 6.5-7.5. It's funny how this city has it's own economy(corruption) gas prices fluctuate here more then anywhere else in the states AND it's the 7th most expensive city to live in IN THE WORLD! Segregation is HORRIBLE, not socially, economically. This is nowhere near a GOOD city, but honestly to me it's better then Living in Milwaukee!!! Oh and one more thing, I BET YOU'RE WHITE! Albany Park? WHITE! That's why you "Love it here" so much. Privilege is a BITCH, gentrification is a BITCH and systematic racism is a bitch. Oh and I've had this name online before xbox360. Used to play Diablo 2 with it. Please don't go on saying "well go live in india" Or some shit like that, I live HERE I don't need to see other places to know how bad the world is, I feel it everyday. There are places in this city that are damn near second world. NOWHERE in an American city as BIG as Chicago should be second world living. Every side of the city has businesses, indians, chinese, polish, mexicans EXCEPT FOR MOST BLACKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tell me that isn't a racial loan issue, PLEASE tell me why most blacks are ghetto and have issues. Only one thing I know comes to mind and that is American History. Rant over.
DEZ n00ts Wow you sound ridiculous. I am not even going to engage in conversation with you. I agree this city has a lot of issues i already said that but i still love this city. And have you ever been to Albany Park? The majority of people that live their are Hispanic, Indian, or Korean. So don't make yourself sound dumb by trying to make this racial or by "guessing" my race based on where i live. Have a good day and enjoy your jaded life by feeling sorry for yourself but not wanting to do anything about it, expect complain.
FierceKoolAid ..... let me tell you.... if you live in Philly, you can definitely live in Chicago....I love my city, it's a.great city, so much culture man. It has its bad areas yes but don't drink the koolaid, do your own research.
FierceKoolAid slide bro. I live around the corner from The Plant, shown on this video; and even though it's a dangerous neighborhood I wouldn't trade my chicago for any other city
I’m from Chicago and I love it. I feel the same way about Philly. If Chicago burned to the ground (again) Philly would be my next choice. We have nothing that compares to Reading Terminal.
Really good journalism here! I love how both the dark and the fun sides of the street were shown. I just got back from Chicago for the weekend and I absolutely loved it, but now when I go back I will make sure to visit halsted
***** WTF is wrong with you? Go crawl back into your bigot basement. Did you run out of crack or meth and can't keep yourself off the internet? Fucking loser.
+Candyliz2003 +Frank Jaegar Greektown doesn't deserve mention tbh but Jaegar you must be an uneducated moron to be able to say what you just said. If greeks were so lazy then how come Greeks are essentially the most well-established immigrant community in America?
Chicago is huge and that wind in December is crazy, I was visiting chicago and I decided to walk from The United Center to the train station downtown. Chicago is big as hell.
***** All you internet idiots say autistic, assburgers and then you ask if someones black when you don't get your way... you're all the same. Oh and educate my social skills, how about you get a passing grade in your English class before trying to shit on someone, mkay?
Really loved this documentary! Made me add Chicago to my bucket list from the UK wish you would've been able to get more in depth interviews from varied neighbourhoods in the south side but great work, great presenter. Vice you should really work on banning the trolls from the comment section
chicago native here, if you like authentic middle eastern food go to kedzie st. great Korean foods on kimball. oh and dont leave without getting lou malnatis deep dish. lol not sure what youre going for but i can give more recommendations on food if you want
ah I wish we could order by the slice, but you have to buy a whole pizza.Don't worry though, they have personal pizzas (deep dish or thin) that are just the right size. Lou's is my all time favorite pizza but if you can't find one in the area you are staying, Giodanos, Gino's East, or Pizanos is delicious too (:
I was born and raised in “Da Chi”!! Bridgeport is one of the most racial divided places in the city!! If you are not a Policeman, firefighter or Italian you not welcome!!!! Bridgeport and Archer heights are WORST places you could have shown to represent the wonderful city of diverse culture!!! And Western would have been a better pick!!!!
Grew up near halsted in the south suburbs in Homewood. This video gave me chills as a lot of those places shown in the video I remember passing by on the metra going towards Chicago
+2sacks1 just proved you've never been to Toronto or most of Canada. It's almost impossible to find a frenchman in Toronto unless they are from a French speaking part of Africa.
Born and raised in Los Angeles and moved to Chicago 6 years ago and have never even thought about going back. Wonderful, welcoming, diverse and fun city. Recommended to anyone who feels like nyc is too much but LA is to spread out and disconnected
+Josh Hale Chicago would love to have you. My advice... go for the cheap rent in a hood with character. Or pay threw the nose and get the same old "yuppie town" every US city seems to be afflicted with these days.
+Josh Hale If you move here, please move to the white area and only go where other white people go. If you walk in the wrong neighbor hoods where the blacks or hispanics live, you can get murdered in a few seconds. I'm black and I grew up around blacks and hispanics, so I'm not being racist. Just a word of advice.
***** Yeah Cicero is really safe. Little Village and humboldt park could be kinda dangerous at night. But yeah most of the murders are done by the African Americans here. It's sad for me to say, but that's the truth.
I've waited for you to show the Chicago Diner as it means a lot to me. Waiting payed off. Great documentary. Makes me want to go back right away to explore the city more :)
Rest in peace curl, my cousin's on the black side of my family thats they grandmother she stayed in altgeld gardens for years,I used to b there in the mid 90s all the time..
I loved living on N. Lake Shore as a youngster. You could walk from the high rise condo to Halsted for the best hot dogs, pizza and anything you wanted food wise. Chicago's little pockets of communities are like little villages to their own.
exo szn holy shit actually thats a good idea I wonder how they'd portray it rofl. Will they have a seasonal option where shitbis different in winter vs summer?
They forgot to say that 2 major universities are on Halsted..UIC (the University of Illinois at Chicago) my alma mater and DePaul and no mention of Greek Town or the other great food establishments that are on the Blvd. I remember smelling Jims as our team (women's basketball) would be conditioning for pre-season on the soccer field. This docu has so many incredible memories for me in college. One of my bff;s grew up in the Algaleds Garden's
Love Chicago. Used to fly there and visit a friend and stay in a hostel downtown. Great memories. Saw Radiohead when they played at Lower Hutchinson Field (Grant Park area).
Thanks for the history lesson. I've enjoyed all these "Streets" episodes so far but this one was genuinely the first one (street) I had no prior knowledge of. Very interesting.
Native Chicagoan here, and all I've got to say is this is truly one of the greatest cities in the world! I lived in El Paso, TX for 15 months, and I didn't like it. At first it was cool you see the natural beauty of the Franklin Mountains, the desert, etc, but then you find out that although the minimum is $7.25 the cost of living is damn near the same as Chicago well that's when you realize it isn't worth it lol. EP taught me hard work ethic, and how to appreciate my work, but it also made me realize I didn't know what I had until I lost it.
Wow-you totally left out Greek Town and Englewood! You went thru them to get to Altgeld Gardens, and the up to Save Money Productions, where you flashed the street sign at Halsted/Milwaukee Sts. Not nice.
Ps-63rd/Halsted is NOT a war zone. At the time you filmed, a new Whole Foods and Starbucks were being built. The Greek shops and restaurants didn't even get an honorable mention. #Greektown #Englewood
Moved from Paris to Montreal, been here for 5 years. But I REALLY feel like experiencing the US for a Year of two. I think I found my city. Chicago sounds awesome !
"The Secret Confessions of a Public School Teacher" ^ why was this recent video made by VICE set to private? i was not able to watch it, and i was looking forward to it was it about flint?? i know some1 that teaches there

nwrighteous you're right, it's also the longest Avenue in Chicago ♥️🤘🏼
Although western is bigger ,etc Halsted has more history
Or Damen tbh
On me! What about Pulaski?!
But western isnt close to downtown while halsted cuts right in the corner of downtown
My mans said "Halstead and 76" not "76th and Halstead". You sure he's from Chicago
+Christopher Holloway non-american here. What is the difference? What street are you supposed to say first?

+Christopher Holloway Judging by your grammar you ARE from Chicago.
Western Ave is the backbone of Chicago. It runs through the entire city. It is the longest continuous street in Chicago.
AF Twice
Very true. Still, Halsted has a lot of cultural hotspots.
you right to be honest
You are right but Halsted is more diverse than Western(at least on the South Side section).More poor whites, blacks and latinos.
Pretty sure it’s the longest street in the world. Definitely longest in America.
western might be the worst street in Chicago ..
Best documentry that I have ever seen about a city. Made me really love Chicago.
Search chiraq bro, yw

Good for the most part. The only thing I'd say is it might have been stronger if it included a few words about UIC, Greektown, and Lincoln Park.

I hate internet psychologist. Everyone has a horrible life to them.
I don't think Chicago could be covered in 1 video, I'm left feeling there was 98% more to be viewed. Pretty cool though.
this is just 1 Chicago street
+Sky Howard I know my friend, I've lived here for 27 years & counting.
+Miguel Ayala They didn't even get all of Halstead street so yea you can't unless you plan on having it be a super long video.
I'm from Philly, and I love my city. But something makes me love Chicago. I don't know what. I almost feel like I should move there some day.

The “Windy City” name has nothing to do with the weather/atmosphere, and no windier than other cities (though can have stiff breeze off the lake).
"Do you like sausage? Cause I like SAUSAGE." Yes my friend, I know you like sausages.
The left always has to show out, they forgot how to be gay and still act like a man

Good series. Get out in the world and do more!

I'm from Humboldt Park and I used to frequent Bridgeport a lot when I was younger. Going to Sox Games and Maxwell Street.
You must not have been through Bridgeport in a while, it is a predominantly Latino and Asian neighborhood now.
@@jlv3x still, Chicago is still very segregated and communities of color get very unfair treatment from the government
That’s the old Bridgeport. I would say Canaryville is how you are describing Bridgeport. If you are not white they will stare at you.
The Plant segment was worth an entire documentary. Every community needs to implement something like that.
see vice, this is good content. Do yonge street in Toronto.
I live in NYC but grew in the Chi -- off of 116th & Halsted. You guys nailed it. Thank you.
I love my city and miss it so much!
Patricia Chmelar me too... you're very pretty 😉
Me live in San Antonio
I love my hometown.
Chicago's dynamic is unique.Without it being overwhelming, you just appreciate every neighborhood.
Jims is so Chicago. I always find myself grabbing some food from Jims.

+2sacks1 You're right Chicago has a much more developed gang culture/ ghetto culture.

great piece. shows the the bright and positive side of Chicago . hope there's a part two
Can you do one on Toronto?
It was only 23 minutes, so understandably they couldn't show the whole city on Halsted- but I feel like they missed a lot. Fun to watch none the less.
As soon as I saw US Cellular on the thumbnail I had to watch this video #GoSox

Yes, I am from Chicago and I live off Halsted, in Bridgeport.
Love this series!
Thanks for the history lesson. I've enjoyed all these "Streets" episodes so far but this one was genuinely the first one (street) I had no prior knowledge of. Very interesting.
when they said closed loop reminded me of Portlandia
Portlandia got the idea of women’s & children first bookstore from here in Chicago.
Liking the city videos! Thanks!
i love vice best channel ever !!!
This series is great
This could go on for hours and I'd still be lovin it.
Chicago sounds awesome !
go to the Southside it's really nice
