My husband was born and raised there .We spent the first 30 years of our marriage there just moved out 6 years ago It was once a great place at the end it was extreme ghetto
The open land, lots of it at 11.30. Could be the site of Sinclair, where my Dad worked, or one of the other blue-collar "plants." Those collapsed apartment buildings were newish in 1961.
You went right by my family's church on 150th and Roby. My Uncle and Aunts house is right across the street from Second Baptist. So many memories of Harvey. Dixie square Mall was a favorite place for us to go. I lived in Detroit, and every summer we went to visit family in Harvey. Sad to see how it is now, but its a sign of the times. Thanks for the memories. I watch your videos all the time.
I miss Bernetti's Pizza on Halstead by the Little Calumet River, when it closed in the 70's 😢 Papa Burnetti working the Pizza oven while his wife rang you up to pick it up!
All the people that ruined the south and west sides of Chicago moved to the southern suburbs and are working their special talents and you will be paying for them soon in emergency repairs.
Yet another terrific in depth look with a mix of forward and side shot video and a soundtrack that really lets it sink in. It is actually better (for me) than going there since I would not have that sixth sense where exactly to go to get the right feel of the place. So my question to you Chris is how do you know where to go since you are not from the area? Megathanks for your hard work!
I’m surprised u didn’t drive past those projects on 154th Dixie Highway. They are basically falling apart but a couple people still live there. Its crazy I seen they have a new door but next door the roof is caved in
Lived in Markham and had to go to school in Harvey and yea it was rough moved to Myrtle Beach when I was 18 and man there is a big difference a the way of living and the diversity
41:40 Good ole Coolidge Middle School. I taught there for quite a few years. It was actually not a bad place to work. Good staff people, mostly good kids. Looks like they have remodeled and added a new addition to the building since I left.
Hey Chris why don't you do the History of Phoenix instead of just this drive through footage that you have on the 2nd half Harvey video footage. That's what I was looking for on this video. Thank you!
5:40 What used to be a pretty large steel mill can be seen. My Father worked there many years ago. Before I was born. It was called Wyman-Gordon. Also went to Gordon Elementary School when I was young. I never put those two things together before. Might just be coincidence.
This is very common occurrence in Cook County. The original home owners get old and die or move out. These homes have sometimes not been well maintained as they aged and on social security. The prices of these homes decrease and buyers with less financial means buy these homes and do not maintain them either. The lower the property values become, the more undesirable people move in and the cycle of poverty and neglect continue as the businesses also move out with lack of customers with disposable income.
The depressed communities and neighborhoods have nice-looking blocks where folks still have pride in ownership...but when you look closer and see the security storm doors and rolldown shutters, you know it's the 'hood.
Grew up there in the 60s early 70s was a nice area it’s a shame what it has become lived in west Harvey 150 th worked at jewel foods Dixie square mall good memories “””It’s a Shit Hole Now””
So sad to see the blight. I could smell the poverty and despair not to mention the amount of rat crap in those abandoned homes that have been empty for years.
@@chrishardenarchivesl grew up across 394 and the cornfield. I could see ford heights and its water tower from my bedroom. I went to school and played sports with people from ford heights. I know there was plenty of evil there, but there were also some really fine people living there. I actually played football with a guy whose name was literally Sir George Washington. I wouldn’t be surprised if he saw this video. This was in the mid 90’s. All the best to my friends from ford heights!
Back in the day, a friend and myself would visit Arnie's Idle Hour. That was literally the safest place in Harvey. Italians owned and ran it if you catch my drift.
Most people want believe it. But I think Harvey will come back. I have 3 rentals there so far and now planing to open a truck top on the edge of Harvey.
Well, things just got tougher for the south suburban communities of Cook County. Reassessment notices went out from the Assessor's office. The tax bills are now out of sight. Some poor homeowners got 200% tax increases due to land values. Unless they appeal and win, many remaining families aren't going to make it.

Just curious... did you also teach 5/6th grade at Madison school in South Holland in the late 70s? If so, you were my teacher!

Hi Chris, I've been watching your channel for a long time and I am fascinated with watching bad neighbourhoods. Where do you find your cool music?
I subscribe to a service called Musicbed and just by searching and being selective through their site over the years.
I used to live in Harvey, in the late 1970’s. Boy has it changed. Did you go to the Dixie Square Mall?
Yeah I drive past the site starting at around 10:00

That street looks so bare. There are no flowers and not enough trees. It's very depressing.
some neighborhoods in harvey look decent and well-maintained, but they're rare

Hey Chris, you being from Detroit does it still shock you to see all the abandoned decrepit homes in other cities or are you used to it?
I'll still get surprised at times, aka Ford Heights but I've seen a lot at this point
