While Pyra and Mythra's Dark Costume could be referencing Poppi from the same game. With the following one next to it, the tricolored alt, is literally Xenogears itself, the super powerful mech that Fei gets around the end or final chapter of Xenogears. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has several aux cores, and costumes that references other Xeno games, such as two costumes to reference Xenogears itself, along with it having Kos-Mos and T-elos as a blade you can summon. 7th one is actually a reference to the Monado, and Nia. The Monado is because of the very much same color saturation, and Pyra's core crystal is blue, to match the usual blue light of the first symbol Monado shown to have in the middle, and the light it makes for it's blade. As for what I mean by the Nia one, it's a spoiler part of the game. Nia appearing as a usual Gormotti driver, but really underneath her clothes, is actually a blade. Not just any blade, but a flesh eater, which is part of what gives Nia her appearance at first, and allows her to be a driver. The colors very much match that of what Nia's blade form has. The final one is Lora and Jin. Because Torna the *Golden* Country, the name of the prequel game, with Lora's hair, and Jin's overall silver color outfit, and hair.
Even though this video is 2 and a half hours long, I can only imagine how long it took for Aaron to find all these references Much respect to your dedication ✊🏻
(Around 1:36:18) As far as I'm aware, Alex is never explicitly stated to be a Female Skin, however it would make sense as a counterpart to Steve who unintentionally became known as a Male Skin. Either way though the Design itself actually takes inspiration from one of the Minecraft Devs, Jeb, most noticably including his signature Ponytail. (as well the Skin in Minecraft itself has an Invisible Set of Pixels that when enabled gives Glasses to Alex which is another clear reference to Jeb's)
0:56 fun fact: wario also has this style as well but in the drawing the Mario looked a bit thick Edit: the outfit that looks like waluigi for Mario, Luigi even has that as well
I feel like it's important to mention a lot of these skins can actually take inspiration from games released after a smash title. Like, Kid Icarus Uprising was probably in development before Brawl, so it wouldn't be surprising if the Brawl look was actually taken from Uprising. But, I'm just spitballing! Great video, thanks a ton!
It's definitely moreso that Uprising took Pit's design from Brawl - Sakurai and Nintendo didn't decide that his next project would be Kid Icarus until after Brawl was already finished and on store shelves.
@@rychusupadude this! we can thank sakurai and his team that worked on brawl for pit and palutenas current designs! it’s no wonder that the two are some of his favorite characters in smash
The White alternate for Toon Link is actually a loose reference to the White Ring in the original Zelda game, as that was the color your tunic changed when the ring was equipped, and reduced damage by half.
I would like to mention something really quick for pyra mythra, alt 6 while I agree that mythra is based off a gundam, Pyra is more likely based off the Master Driver Rex outfit he attains the same time Pneuma is introduced. As for alt 8 while they could be the metals as you said, they could also be based off Jin and Lora, two pretty important characters to the plot and the main driver and blade in the torna dlc. Of course this is just a very tiny gripe coming from a massive Xenoblade fan who begs to differ. Besides from that, you did an amazing job with all of this. 10/10
Nah, Luxin covered this one, and it's Xenogears. Literally the mech called that, in the Xenogears game itself. It has the same balance of colors as it. Rex Master Driver lacks the color of Red anyways.
Also, alt 4 may be based on Weltall from Xenogears. alt 5 is most definitely based on the Xenogears, the eponymous robot with the power of a god. alt 8 is probably based on the Zohar, an incredibly important device in the entire Xeno series.
The dark purple color of Zelda seems more likely to be a reference to Impa rather than Vaati. That purple is the shade used for the Shadow Temple in Ocarina of Time whom Impa was the guardian of. Impa also had the same shade of silver hair. Impa also being Impa's guardian
Dark Samus has a few outfits that reference some of the suit upgrades from the Metroid Prime series. The red outfit is referencing Samus's Dark Suit, the black and orange outfit is likely referencing the Phazon Suit, which is what would eventually become Dark Samus.
Cloud's black FF7 outfit could be a reference to what he wore at the end of Crisis Core. It's also a reference to the SOLDIER 1st Class uniform because we see that in Crisis Core, Zack started out in a purple SOLDIER 2nd class uniform. Then he gets promoted to SOLDIER 1st class and it becomes black. I never understood why Cloud's SOLDIER uniform in original FF7 was purple. I think the blue SOLDIER uniform is supposed to reference SOLDIER 3rd class.
@@QuatroXEspada not pure....she wore yellow but she is a native american like character but canary mary is pure yellow...yellow hair..yellow feathers..and yellow clothes
24:14 I think this is highly likely, considering that if you turn off lighting and grab the color from the outfit, it actually matches the colour code of the red virus.
I think this may have been referenced in a different video, but Sephiroth's one wing actually first appeared in Kingdom Hearts. Not Advent Children. Kingdom Hearts came out before Advent Children
Safer Sephiroth (his final form) from the original FF7 has the one wing in place of his right arm, so it really originated in FF7, but the iteration of the wing that we are used to did come from KH.
Joker uses a gun and a sword in combat and brings out a devil at a certain time. His color 6 is a red coat. Sephiroth uses a really long sword and can transform as well. His color 6 is a blue coat. They are the perfect counter to each other's movesets. Sakurai, you sly son of a gun.
you know, for Link they could've used the ACTUAL model for the Fierce Deity alt instead of recoloring the Tunic Of The Wild alt, as a matter of fact I would've preferred it if the Tunic Of The Wild alts were ALL the models they are based after: the Fierce Deity color should've been the actual Fierce Deity armor from BOTW, the darker color should've been the actual Twilight Princess Hero's Tunic, and the Dark Link alt should've been the actual Dark Link set from BOTW
That’d be really cool for the Zelda cast seeing how often their designs differ per game compared to the other series reps. It’s a missed opportunity to not allow the hero of time fight alongside the heroes of twilight and the wild.
Fun fact: Tails, as well as Sonic, were planned to be in the Smash series ever since Melee, but they were cut due to time restraints. As we all know, Sonic did eventually join the battle in Brawl. But Tails, being a Mii Costume, may never get his chance.
Kms 😭😭😭😭😭😭 The costumes look horrifying 💀 I get time restraints and all but seriouslyyyy after all this time they couldn’t give us Tails or Amy or Shadow over half the other characters added that I had no idea existed. Fml.
do not understand why the tails and knuckles mii costumes are the way they are, people love the sans and cuphead costumes because they actually make you the character, not a mii wearing a costume of the character, i think mii costumes of characters would be infinitely more welcome if they took that approach with all of them
2:16:34 I think the reason why they changed the name for the U.S trailer is most likely because, Nintendo wanted to avoid the mention of assassins in an E10+ rated game, so the name could have been changed to keep in line with the ESRB rating.
sort of, but, it's actually because of an ESRB rule, in which, if a gaming presentation "refrences/promotes" a Mature game, then the presentation is considered Mature too, so they can't promote the game (if it's E for everyone? sorry, im not familliar with ESRB ratings, i am European.) So, the name of the game has to be censored so that the presentation is "E for Everyone/family friendly"

I still think Lilac from "Freedom Planet" would have made a good playable character if she was added to the roster, since the game she's from happens to be a favorite of many indie game fans, and I heard that "Indie Pogo" is not a suitable game for her to be in due to its broken gameplay.
I know that plenty of people have already said it, but I feel like the general reception towards the Geno Mii Gunner Costume would have been much more positive if the hat/headwear was completely modeled to have both Geno's head and his hat similar to Sans and Cuphead. Why this wasn't done isn't known, but if anything, I'm willing to bet that copyright issues were involved.
I always find it interesting how European most Nintendo (and a lot of foreign media for that matter) human characters look, sure Anima can be imbiguous, but link, Zelda, Mario, peach,Luigi, etc are all European. Maybe it's because the English market, especially American market, is just so massive.
Well Donkey Kong the arcade version was made especially for the American market since the first game on the cabinet didn’t sell well. Also NOA used to be in NYC which had a high Italian population so Mario and Luigi’s name came from a pizza place there.
1:40:29 Sephiroth's wing actually made its first appearance in the first KH game, not Advent Children, following the release of KH1 in 2002, pretty much every FF media featuring Sephiroth has him with his wing, Crisis Core, AC, FFVIIR, Dissidia, and others.
I want to make a correction for Lucina's 3rd alt, her third alt actually represents Selena which is Severa's is in Fire Emblem Fates because Cherche doesn't have red hair she has pink hair if you look at Cherche's artwork and model
Massive Melee Mythra is *absolutely* a Smash reference. The Nopon who gives it to you even outright states it's perfect for, and I quote, "smashing and brawling". Also, their "evil" and "aeronautical" color schemes may be closet references to Weltall and Xenogears, from PS1 game Xenogears, that is a direct spiritual predecessor to the Xenoblade series.
This is an incredibly late comment that probably won't be seen ever. However I think that Pit's blonde hair skin is supposed to look like Phosphora from Kid Icarus Uprising and Dark Pit's ult with the red clothes, yellow scarf, and purple halo is supposed to look like Viridi.
5:57 While mass-produced Samus is indeed a Gundam reference, it's not a reference to any Gundam (not sure where that "mass-produced Gundams have a green base" came from), but the main mass-produced enemy from the first show, the Zaku, which has a round head and round shoulder similar to Samus'.
1:40:42 The first appearance of Sephiroth's black wing was actually his appearance as an optional boss in the International and Final Mix versions of the first Kingdom Hearts, not Advent Children!
Bayo’s Orange Alt is a Reference to Loki, the child that she helps in Bayo 2, and the White Alt is either a reference to her Nun outfit or her Pure Platinum Trophies.
Just gonna throw this out. Onette is pronounced Won-ette because the towns in Earthbound are named after numbers and seasons. Onette, Twoson, Threed, Fourside.
1:49:22 this Kazuya's Suit was also seen in Tekken Tag Tournament 1 intros and his storyboard on Tekken 6 (including a few characters storyboards) 1:51:39 in Tekken 4 and Tekken 5 Jin's Gauntlets, foot gaurd and flame pants were white instead of red and on Tekken Tag Tournament 1 was blue in character select screen and Embu intro
So I think the two changed Robin alts got changed to match three houses since it was announced the same year as Ultimate’s release. Only reason I could see changing the hair from red to a lighter color and from yellow to brown
Fun fact for Arusu/Erdrick: He is actually Australian since in Dragon Quest 3 each area is designed after real life countries on our planet. So yes technically you can go to Japan in that game to which is named Jipang.
@@Bubbabyte99 The OG trilogy and 11 all take place on the same timeline for sure though, the other games may or may not be part of that same world. I'd like to think so, like a Zelda timeline.
Bowser's all-grey skin is from the Japanese SMB1 boxart. It used to be in a Nintendo catalogue I had as a kid and I just shrugged it off as random promotional artwork.
6:02 I should point out, as a fan of the Gundam series, that while there were one or two Gundams throughout the franchise sporting green as their primary color, the mass-produced suits that this suit would reference are the Zakus (and their future spinoffs, including the Leos of Wing), which are used by the Principality of Zeon, the enemies of the Federation. Makes me wonder if there was something else that color scheme was meant to reference instead...
Perhaps the Metroids? They are usually depicted with green and a little bit of red or it could reference one of the colors that flashes on Samus on the ending cutscene of the first Metroid game!
Peach's black and yellow dress actually refers to the stars of power ( mario 64). Like Peach's, Daisy's changing colors to green actually refers to power moons ( in mario odyssey). Peach's gold dress actually refers to Peach being the player's reward. It also refers to the coins that Mario collects throughout the game.
I’m pretty sure the red, blue and pink Color’s for young link is a reference to the legend of Zelda four swords when link grabs the four sword which then makes clones based on his emotions.
Probably a stretch, but I think Sephiroth's silver/gray alt might be a reference to the degradation process, which notably affects Genesis and (sorta) Angeal.
i like to think that the green and yellow skin for Richter is made to look like Maria Renard a friend of Richter and other playable character in rondo of blood

Even though this video is 2 and a half hours long, I can only imagine how long it took for Aaron to find all these references

0:56 fun fact: wario also has this style as well but in the drawing the Mario looked a bit thick
Edit: the outfit that looks like waluigi for Mario, Luigi even has that as well
I feel like it's important to mention a lot of these skins can actually take inspiration from games released after a smash title.

Oh Really? Thanks for the correction

The dark purple color of Zelda seems more likely to be a reference to Impa rather than Vaati. That purple is the shade used for the Shadow Temple in Ocarina of Time whom Impa was the guardian of. Impa also had the same shade of silver hair. Impa also being Impa's guardian
"Impa being Impa's guardian"?

Dark Samus has a few outfits that reference some of the suit upgrades from the Metroid Prime series. The red outfit is referencing Samus's Dark Suit, the black and orange outfit is likely referencing the Phazon Suit, which is what would eventually become Dark Samus.
DK's Blue tie on his red outfit is probably also a callback to how the stages are coloured Blue
DK's green skin is probably a reference to the jungle green N64 with the red expansion.
The yellow outfit for Banjo-Kazooie is actually more likely to be based on Canary Mary, specifically regarding Kazooie.
Maybe it could also be a reference to Golden Freddy/Fredbear from the FNaF series.

I think this may have been referenced in a different video, but Sephiroth's one wing actually first appeared in Kingdom Hearts. Not Advent Children. Kingdom Hearts came out before Advent Children
I wish Sephiroth used One Wing more
Safer Sephiroth (his final form) from the original FF7 has the one wing in place of his right arm, so it really originated in FF7, but the iteration of the wing that we are used to did come from KH.
It’s a missed opportunity to not allow the hero of time fight alongside the heroes of twilight and the wild.

do not understand why the tails and knuckles mii costumes are the way they are, people love the sans and cuphead costumes because they actually make you the character, not a mii wearing a costume of the character, i think mii costumes of characters would be infinitely more welcome if they took that approach with all of them

2:16:34 I think the reason why they changed the name for the U.S trailer is most likely because, Nintendo wanted to avoid the mention of assassins in an E10+ rated game, so the name could have been changed to keep in line with the ESRB rating.
sort of, but, it's actually because of an ESRB rule, in which, if a gaming presentation "refrences/promotes" a Mature game, then the presentation is considered Mature too, so they can't promote the game (if it's E for everyone? sorry, im not familliar with ESRB ratings, i am European.)
So, the name of the game has to be censored so that the presentation is "E for Everyone/family friendly"

I still think Lilac from "Freedom Planet" would have made a good playable character if she was added to the roster, since the game she's from happens to be a favorite of many indie game fans, and I heard that "Indie Pogo" is not a suitable game for her to be in due to its broken gameplay.

Interestingly Shantae's first game was published by Capcom so it make sense that she appeared in the Capcom wave of DLC Mii costumes.
