    Marlon and team's work is second to none. Until you've been in his shop, met his team, talked with them and seen their work first hand you can't appreciate it. I saw their first full build at Luft years ago and spent 10 minutes with my head in the engine compartment in awe. I thought I'd seen everything after a day of seeing hundreds of air cooled cars of all shapes, sizes, prices and levels of hot rod to originality but their work was utterly captivating even in that context.

    I remember when Matt Farah and Jonny Lieberman discussed Workshop 5001 a few years ago on the TST podcast. This is my first time actually seeing the car. It sounds like a lovely thing to drive, but... I know it's a different beast, but I can't help but think that the 11,000 RPM Tuthill 911K is the best "restomod" air-cooled Porsche.

    • @8Lucas1Simoes2lsdGT
      @8Lucas1Simoes2lsdGT ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Since the video of Chris Harris, when I think about Porsche restomods the first one that comes to my mind is the Tuthill 911 K. I don't think that a Porsche can be better than that. Even the Carrera GT I think that can't.

    • @shingoose6197
      @shingoose6197 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@8Lucas1Simoes2lsdGT Agreed. 11 thousand rpm in a road car is insane, and something very few have achieved (without putting a bike engine in a tiny car). But there's so much more to that car than just the engine.

    • @8Lucas1Simoes2lsdGT
      @8Lucas1Simoes2lsdGT ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@shingoose6197 yeah man, it's also incredible because of the weight (846 Kg), the power (350 PS), the handbrake of a Drift car/ Rallye car, the carbon wheels, the beautiful interior, the classic 911 shape and, of course, the flaming exhaust!

    As soon as you see the city lights and period fogs in this "restomod", you know it was done with respect to the era and not upgraded to compete with modern offerings. Love it!

    This is how a 964 should look, none of that fake, kitsch backdating to make it sort of look like 73" Carrera RS stuff that seems to be in fashion these days.

      The 964 is peak 911 design and original mechanical engineering! The 993 is lovely with its redesigned suspension setup and “modernised” design. The 996 has a soft spot for me because of Sally in Cars. The 930 is just the definition of the 80’s! The 964 is my perfect 911, it’s just that the market is insane.

    I think this type of build is pure and thoughtful of the original. I absolutely love it. I just cannot get my head around the snub nosed restomod from a particular Cali builder. Its not to my taste at all, but this, this is a real gem. I like what this builder is achieving. Not only is he making the car more fun he's preserving the heritage of the air cooled 911.

    Soon as I see any of these restomod Porsches, Tuthill’s creation jumps to mind! And like others have said on here, all after watching Harris rag the little lightweight up n down its 11k rev range. The only other that comes close, was a young fella from Cali that works at Rod Emory’s- kids name escapes me? But what a gun on bodywork and that old art of shaping metal! What he’s done to a gorgeous little 912 might be on par with Tuthill’s..
    Search up one of Magnus Walkers recent outlaw episodes and look for a little silver 912 restomod- this one has the proper boxer four, only it revs to 10k! So has that same almost banshee like wail as Tuthill’s. The space between the doors and the rear wheels have been extended just enough to give it 911 proportions and an utterly bang on stance. This kid has also subtly combined elements of a 365- more so to the rear grill and lights- so so tastefully done too. Ultimately, it’s the super lightweight(circa 850kg) and stratospheric rev characteristics in a 911/12 body that is some how irresistible to me. That and the subtle aesthetic- especially in comparison to say a Singer.
    I think with regards to this Studio 5001 variant, I’d change the seats too. I’ve never been a fan of those Porsche wheels that stick out further than the tires. Last off, I’d want the weight down to no higher than 1000kg. All hypothetical lottery winning stuff of course;))

    For me, The Tuthill Porsche 911K is the ultimate expression of the Porsche 911. If I ever won the lottery, it would absolutely be THE car I bought. Don't get me wrong, that car is lovely, but if I am going to fork out supercar money for an air cooled 911- The Tuthill is just "it" for me.

      Modern suspension vs. the torsion bars in older cars. Nicer base to work from. Updated interior. etc. I say this as a 911 SC owner - the 964 has some perks if you're already going to spend $$$ on the restomod side of things.

    I'm with the majority here; a narrowbody looks better than a widebody as it's more subtle and 'below-the-radar'. I used to dislike the 964 generation. Now it might be my favourite one. Although...I hate to be that guy...but is anyone else surprised that Henry ''can't afford a built 964''? I would have thought a man of his automotive stature would have been well-paid by Hagerty, enough-so to sit himself into almost anything south of 1/4 million.
    I really shouldn't judge; I certainly can't and likely never will.

    Henry, it's actually a horizontal 6 or boxer 6, not a flat 6. In this type of engine, there are six crank pins, and each cylinder is connected to each crank pin via a connecting rod. This configuration gives a pair of cylinders the boxing motion, which is why the Germans call it a boxer engine, not a flat engine. On the other hand, a flat six has 3 crank pins, and every crank pin has 2 cylinders attached to it via a pair of connecting rods, giving the pair of cylinders a master and slave motion. As far as I know, there is no production of a flat 4 or 6 engine. Another manufacturer using the same principle for their horizontal or boxer engines is Subaru.
