    About a few months ago my younger cousin read this book and said it was so cute and i should read it (shes 11 so first how did she get her hands on this book) but i got maybe half way through the book and started crying. mY COUSIN THOUGHT THAT- I am so mad. I didn't finish the book and afterwards her and I had conversation, but I was actually sick to my stomach that my little cousin thought that THAT was LOVE? I told her shes not allowed to read anymore Colleen Hoover books, and handed her one of my Percy Jackson books, considering that was more age appropriate and not mentally scarring for me when she talked about it.
    Needless to say, I need therapy, and I'm glad someone is actually firing some shots at Colleen for this depiction of 'love'.

    TW: domestic abuse
    I think the problem with books like these are twofold: 1. the message that emotional abuse is wrong unless A. they are dealing with their own "issues" and B. they are attractive. If this is the case, then they are not "abusive" they are just "damaged" and that is somehow hot and romantic (which means they are in a roundabout way equating "abusive" to "sexy" which is not only gross, its dangerous especially to young girls). It seems to me that this idea of "damaged" being a "sexy" way of saying "abusive" is a common trend in erotica, and that especially problematic given - 2. The idea that if a person is merely "damaged" then you can "fix" them with enough love. These messages are not only problematic, as you pointed out, but can lead someone to stay in an abusive relationship in the hopes that their abuser will one day love them enough to "get over" their trauma and stop abusing them. And that's something that can literally get someone killed. These book are not only bad, they are dangerously irresponsible. Say it with me-- your abuser's trauma does not justify their abuse.

    • @JackedThor-so
      @JackedThor-so 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    it really feels like you're being gaslit by the whole world when you don't like colleen hoover's books and everyone else does. "all your perfects' literally traumatised me; apart from the cringey lines, the portrayal of love and infertility and mental illness in that book? horrifying. the couple's relationship is strained because of their fertility issues, she spirals into depression and gets no help for it, the mmc cheats on her (and claims he did it because he missed her and loved her so much), and everything is solved in the last few pages. i am still reeling from the horrid experience that was that book.

I'm in my later 20s and growing up it was always "do this or that to get a guy to like you" or "if hes mean or rude he's just teasing" rather than how men should respect women. On a more serious note. All what you say, the way you wrapped up this video is so right. I loved november 9 when I read it, I thought of it as romance and love and fun and would have give it a four star. But now that I think about it, and watch this video and other ones and reading reviews of how shady and wrong and sexist this type of plot line is, and seeing it marketed off as romance, I realize just how manipulated and threaded into this type of books I was. And I called myself a feminist. This brought light to some aspects I should've been more aware of. I realize this now, so thank you

      At least you're aware of that now. There are ADULTS who would romanticize and want these kinds of relationship.

    This is the first video of yours I've seen and I'm in love. This was HILARIOUS. The entire time I was thinking "Wait, is this E. L. James and 50 Shades of Gray under different names?" I'm so glad you finally compared them. But 50 Shades totally DOES romanticize the relationship and make it into a love story when it's really outrageously abusive, but HE'S HOT SO IT'S OKAY!

    Tysm for the honesty!! Everyone loves this book, like wtf, I get everyone has their own opinions but it honestly made me feel kinda crazy that I was the only person I know who doesn’t like this book. It isn’t romance its abuse and that ain’t cute. I’m not gunna be a hypocrite I probably would’ve enjoyed this book when I was 14, however I feel this is the kind of book you would like if your new to reading. Now I’m so much more mature and can see the red flags. To be fair if it was labelled as a toxic relationship then it wouldn’t be so bad but it’s promoted as a love story. My one big concern is that its targeted to young impressionable people who may then in return think it’s okay to be used instead of someone getting therapy.💀

      True. I'm eager to read Colleen's book despite the fact that it might/is problematic because of the hype and everything going on in the internet. I gotta judge it with myself 😂

      Okay. It's only been 2 minutes amd I changed my mind 😂 Nope. I'm not gonna read books that romanticize abuse and sexism. Disgusting.

      @@jaishalba8519 went back to watch this video again. I listened to it ends with us on audiobook and the writing is terrible for one, it sounds like a fan fiction/wattpad. The things that happen are so unrealistic are just weird, he knocks on every door in the building to find hers just for sex. The actual plot isn’t terrible but the writing is so bad and stuff is so forced like the Mc relationship with atlas. Ugh

    I’m so glad that when I was in high school I somehow avoided these books. Instead my teachers pushed me toward great literature with healthy relationships.
