    When he was caught "beating her" in public and the marriage was arranged, I thought a more expected solution would have been to just say that she's a witch and he was doing his job. I mean, they don't know that she's a witch for sure, but isn't the point of the witch hunt blaming random women anyway? Maybe the guy could even feel bad about the lie and that's how they get romantic, and there could have been this whole reveal of her actually being a witch, but at that point he's cool with it. Unfortunately, we have to contrive the forced marriage anyway, because Hot Trends.

      Honestly, yes, this is great. The way the whole decision of marriage happened was so bland like, Lou's supposed to be badass but she's asking someone else to protest the decision in her place? Also, if Lou protested the marriage, why didn't Arch Bishop himself just say they'd frame her as a witch if she didn't comply! Try to sell the fuckin alternative, at least try to convince me you're smart! But Straight up, if that were me and I were in hiding, I'd take the marriage deal cuz you know there's some privileges to being married to a chasseur. Then a few weeks later, have your husband slowly die of poison after secretly gathering funds to run away. The more they get to know each other, she feels guilty, tries to cure him but gets caught and shit goes sideways.

    I got really excited when you said that the witches emit a smell when using magic, I was like "OMG each witch can smell like different things"
    Like, in my lil head, especially given that this is a romance book, you could have the lemon witch, the strawberry witch, the pine sol witch, and etc. And witches could go into industries that make their extremely potent aromas more believable, like a lumberjack which cutting down timber and smells like pine, like "oh that's totes normal" or a bread witch in a bakery, again "totes normal"
    but no.

    When you have sex, bleeding a whole lot is actually a very bad sign. It means there isn’t a lot of lubrication and that the woman isn’t turned on lol. Even if there is slight tearing, there should not be more blood than you might get from a light period. The experience is natural and shouldn’t cause you LITERAL INJURY.

      yeah, plus a lot of women break their hymen before intercourse without noticing because it takes little force to do so, and there's generally not much blood involved. in other words, bleeding all over the bed like she hemorrhaged wouldn't even confirm that they consummated, just that she had a horrible time!

      I remembered my mom said that when she was a kid, there was a marriage in her city, and the next morning the bride's family actually did take the marriage sheet and hung it in front of the house. So people could see the blood stain and know she was a virgin when they consummated the marriage. And that she could have been abandoned and badmouthed in the city if the sheets weren't bloody and she didn't feel pain. So that was a thing, apparently, at least in small, religious rural cities in the 1970s'.

      Oh man let me get started on the asexual comment then. "Witches only give birth to other witches, so they're basically asexual." Since when is a person's sexuality determined by the characteristics of the children they birth? Unless he meant that in a biological sense in which case an organism creating another organism describes all reproduction, sexual or not. Does Reid think that sex doesn't matter in sexual reproduction? Or that witches can give birth by themselves? Do they have a cloning spell??

    Tbh I think some of this is being taken out of context unintentionally but I don’t blame you because the author does a shitty job in general. I think the stuff like forcing people to consummate their marriage, think of married women as property, etc. is part of the contextualization for this time period. But again, the author is inconsistent with displaying historical accuracy, sometimes she will show characters who strictly believe in traditional marriage practices, other times they are using slang for comedic effect that doesn’t align with anything. This makes it incredibly difficult to know if she is contextualizing, or just inserting absurd things. I think the author wanted Reid to be extremely sexist and dehumanizing of witches at first, to emphasize that’s how he was raised to see the world, but it just didn’t translate really well since his development towards healthier beliefs isn’t really shown.....the author just tells you, ta-da he loves Lou and would never hurt her despite her being a witch. I kind of knew this book would suck when I saw the words “Pompous ass” repeated thrice on the same page. 😐

    • @kajamiletic3223
      @kajamiletic3223 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      In my headcanon for this book, which I was entertained by despite its absolute trashiness, it's the witches who talk in slang and the common mortals who adhere to the norms of the time period. Which makes sense if you consider the fact that the witches have a whole-ass subculture that is matriarchal and sexually liberated and that most of them grow up far away from the Muggles, so if this were a better author it would have presented a nice contrast for the witches to have distinct speaking patterns that seem more "modern" to reflect the more modern values that they hold.

It was a hallmark moment for Italian feminism and unheard of at the time.
