That's exactly why Gamplay footage is so important. The rules and even the explanation seemed pretty complex and complicated. And then I saw both gameplay vids. And what should I say? It's pretty easy kind of a Game, when you see how it's done in gameplay. Now I definitely consider buying it.
I have to say, that moment of realization was just absolutely perfect. Well, we weren't too much help, we only suggested one move and it failed spectacularly!
This game looks like nothing short of amazing now when I finally saw it in action! I'll be picking this up next time I visit my local game store (along with Thunderstone Advance: Worlds Collide, I hope), thanks so much for sharing! =) Pretty much a crushing win, well deserved.
Do it online! Or at least record it and put it online. It is so amazing watching you deciding your moves, explaining them and telling your viewers about an awesome gaming-experience. I sincerely second anyone asking you to do this online!
***** msolec2000 Thanks so much guys! I have to say, it really has been my pleasure to game with such an awesome guy like Rodney! Be sure to let me know when you're passing through my area Rodney, I'm going to hold you to that! :P
Wow, that was... unexpected. I was eyeballing Sheet Lightning's On Hit effect for a bit, and then I looked back over at Rodney's card pair right as the On Hit was mentioned and... yeah, Rodney picked the right time to turtle. :P
***** Retribution has Soak 2 and shot has Stun Guard 2 though. 9:39 is probably a better time to mark at 10:00 transitions to the next attack. Thank you for the response as well. =)
Great question! My pair had a "start of beat" effect, which resolves before we do our regular activation. Now if Matt also had a "start of beat" effect, he would have gone first in resolving that as well. After the "start of beat" effects resolved, we continue on with our turns as normal.
Quick question, when Rodney played Petrifying Drive and Matt played Retribution Aegis, why isn't Rodney able to use concentration counters to stun Matt. I know Matt had soak 4 but doesn't that only mean Rodney could have hit for 0 damage, or does fully soaking an attack act more like a dodge? The only way I see not being able to use Marmalee's ability is if it were a ON DAMAGE effect.
I will confess it's been so long since I recorded this, I'm no longer the expert on answering this question. I don't know if in the video I said I "couldn't" do it, or I just didn't think to do it :)
Thanks for replying to such an old video Rodney, I really wasn't expecting one, I just kinda threw it out there. I'm sure I'll find the answer to my question elsewhere. Also I just want to add your content is superb and wish you many more years of success with Watch it Played :)
This is late because the new KS came out and i missed it all this time. For the first move, even if he soak your attack, couldnt you sacrifice 2 tokens to stun him and stop him from attacking?
Thanks for the reply. I was just curious and trying to learn the game to get a good feel for the game as i back the KS :) I assumed you didnt want the token to accumalte on his part. PLUS AMAZING ENDING to that game.
I'm a bit confused about the whole stun mechanic.... Are you stunned after each attack unless you have a higher stun guard right? So it's possible with the right combination of cards to essentially stunlock someone?
It's been awhile since I played, so my memory on this is a bit shaky, but the rules (page 24 from a quick skim) say that when a player takes damage greater than their Stun Guard value, they are stunned.
Thanks for the great video. I've played this for about two weeks and have been making mistakes, which has led to some unsatisfying experiences. Your video will make the game much better for us.
Soak is applied against damage before it "hits". Stun occurs based on the damage taken. If your soak is above the damage you would otherwise take, no stun occurs and stun guard is not applied (since damage is effectively 0).
Kitsune Zeta the part I am asking about is the first attack where he uses the petrifying base, can he still use the on hit effect to auto stun his opponent even though he soaks the damage?
Matthew Dowd ooh... looks like you're right on that one. Page 23 of the rulebook says that On Hit effects occur the moment a hit is confirmed, even if that hit would do no damage. It's On Damage that requires 1 point of damage to trigger. So, strictly, Retribution Aegis wouldn't have activated after Rodney's attack because the attack hitting (for any or no damage) would've allowed Rodney to spend 2 tokens to stun his opponent. [Edit: Page 25 also confirms that the only way to negate a stun-by-effect such as this is to have the effect "Stun Immunity"]
Matthew Dowd I'm wondering this as well. It is a stun on hit EFFECT not on damage so I'm thinking he could have stunned him. Regardless of doing no damage. Though, I guess it stopped him from getting more tokens so in the long run it turned out to be the right play. I think a rematch is warranted maybe with the beginner characters (would be awesome).
Yes, but didn't know that we would play a Clash. The advantage was that I had several keen minds working on the best play for a few days, and he was on his own. But Matt's a good sport, he didn't mind :)

The details are important, but they can be overwhelming all at once. I'm glad the gameplay videos helped provide a simpler view of things :)
overall it's not too difficult, though if they were playing flight 4/5 characters it'd be crazy
Let it be known that Rodney is a master strategist. He can even out strategize himself if it means getting the victory.
It's not an easy thing to do :)
I have to say, that moment of realization was just absolutely perfect. Well, we weren't too much help, we only suggested one move and it failed spectacularly!
But it failed the right way :)
The visual of the finisher is fantastic: he flies over spraying you with lightning: you barely endure it with a barrier as you deal the final blow!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Don't take the game offline! Do more online battles so we can all cheer you both on!
If I ever get a decent internet service I'll gladly stream some games :)
*****
If I had the money, I'd pay for it myself.
Adran06 Ah, if it was a matter of money, I'd have it. We need some fibre op, but it's not in our area yet.

Or just record the offline game for us to enjoy!
i absolutely love this game! must be a fast, fun, crazy game without the all the narration. thanks for another winner, Rod.
that dawn look of realization was glorious
I'm happy to hear you were entertained by my demise :)
Board Game Replay I was talking about Rodneys
Meiersification
It still applies what he answered to you, since Rodney's realization led to his downfall *laughs*
Awesome job! Congratulations Rodney! Matt has been a great addition to the show.
That's very nice of you to say - I always appreciate when our viewers are welcoming to our guests! :)

Hell yeah, I've been waiting for this video!!

I would do this more often if our streaming service wasn't so poor where I lived.
Matt is a great gamer. Hope you can get him in more episodes! :)
You said it. Great guy and always a welcome guest. I'm just hoping I get to guest on his show someday :) Next time I through your state Matt!

Great game, guys!
I would love to see another of these Battlecon videos. Do you ever return to games?
+Justin D. With so many games we want to cover, I don't usually return to games we've already featured.
Wow, that was... unexpected. I was eyeballing Sheet Lightning's On Hit effect for a bit, and then I looked back over at Rodney's card pair right as the On Hit was mentioned and... yeah, Rodney picked the right time to turtle. :P
Sometimes things come together :)
At 10:00 why is he stunned? He still has a stun guard of 2 after soak?
Sabuus I think you might be looking at the wrong character. The one with Stun Guard, is the one that is attacking (my character). Hope that helps!
***** Retribution has Soak 2 and shot has Stun Guard 2 though. 9:39 is probably a better time to mark at 10:00 transitions to the next attack. Thank you for the response as well. =)
Sabuus No worries! Thanks for being so interested in understanding.
I would love to see more of these matchs played out. RedClaw87 had it right. You guys make this game seem easy.
Glad you enjoyed Eric. We don't tend to repeat play throughs, but just because there are so many different games we'd like to be able to feature.
NOOOO!!! To short!!! Need More!!!!
Lol 11:57 I feel bad for the damage I did so let me showcase the crankdown of your dial full screen. I love it!
Doesn't come across that I felt THAT bad, did it? :)
At 8:43 why do you go first when the priority of Matt is 1 and yours is 0?
Great question! My pair had a "start of beat" effect, which resolves before we do our regular activation. Now if Matt also had a "start of beat" effect, he would have gone first in resolving that as well. After the "start of beat" effects resolved, we continue on with our turns as normal.
Watch It Played Thanks for clarifying!
I don't think that you defeaded Matt. He pushed the selfdestruct-button.
Ha! I like that visual :)
Quick question, when Rodney played Petrifying Drive and Matt played Retribution Aegis, why isn't Rodney able to use concentration counters to stun Matt. Thanks so much - very kind of you to say!
In fact, stun his opponent was useless because Marmelee stil out of range. With Marmelee, I think it's better to not be close of Eligor.
This is late because the new KS came out and i missed it all this time. For the first move, even if he soak your attack, couldnt you sacrifice 2 tokens to stun him and stop him from attacking?
I could have! It's hard for me to remember my exact mindset at the time, but I don't think I wanted him to gain those Vengeance tokens!
Thanks for the reply. I was just curious and trying to learn the game to get a good feel for the game as i back the KS :)

A stun occurs whenever a player takes damage greater than his Stun Guard value.
So other then that a stun will always occur unless specified otherwise?
It's been awhile since I played, so my memory on this is a bit shaky, but the rules (page 24 from a quick skim) say that when a player takes damage greater than their Stun Guard value, they are stunned.
Aight, all good just wanted to clarify, thanks for the quick replies :D

I'm very glad to hear that Larry - hope you get to the fun stuff soon :)
I see how this works Rodney. You lose to Luke, find some different meat. Good plan.
Even Matt beats me! But not this time :)

Oh come now guys let's give Rodney a break. He was bound to win one... eventually...
Maybe I am missing some sort of arcane rules issue but can't you still stun him if he soaks the damage?

Kitsune Zeta The result would likely have ended up the same but I was just looking for the rules clarification there...

the people only helped you for one turn. so you did a lot of great moves by yourself
Well thank you kindly! It was a team effort.
What disadvantage did Matt have? The viewer suggestion was negated by the clash.
Yes, but didn't know that we would play a Clash. The advantage was that I had several keen minds working on the best play for a few days, and he was on his own. But Matt's a good sport, he didn't mind :)
What. Just. Happened? Rodney actually won? ;)
Mark your calendars!
