1. First play Petrifying + Drive 2. if you do not win Priority spend 3 concentration counters to get priority. Then advance 2 spaces "drive "before activating advance 1 or 2 spaces. 3. now hit him with your 4 mighty power and then spend 2 concentration counters to stun him. since the text says stun he will get stunted even if he has stun guard only alternative "safe" move is to run with a dash but he has 11 hit points left and you can do 4 damage and get a stun in.
This would probably be my play, as it beats a lot of things and can't be punished. If Matt anticipates this, a good counter play would be Retribution and either Aegis or Dash. Aegis plus an ante of one Vengeance Token might deter Rodney from attacking at all. He could advance only one space, and neither attack would hit. It would be a minor loss for Matt of one Vengeance Token. If Rodney advanced two and completed the attack in that scenario, he'd only deal one damage, he'd give Matt three Vengeance Tokens, and he'd be forced to spend two Concentration Counters for the stun. I'm not sure if that's worth one damage. A Dash would force Rodney to spend three Concentration Counters to hit. Matt would take two damage and receive two Vengeance Tokens. Not a terrible loss.
My suggestion would be for you to use Petrifying Drive. My reasoning: First you have to be absolutely certain you don't get stunned now that you have 5 Concentration Counters. That excludes any base that he can use Counter on and only leaves you with Meditation and Drive as options. Now, none of his combinations can reach you if he strikes first, apart from Shot and that will only leave him with a Priority of 1, which you will easily beat. So either he picks that and lets you attack first or his attack fizzles. To hit him you'll have to advance 2 spaces, as you'll only have a Range of 1, but then you can spend 2 Concentration Counters to stun him (if he has a Stun Guard of 4 or greater) and since he doesn't have 5 Vengeance Tokens he can't become completely stun immune. That will leave you with 3 tokens plus the 1 you'll collect during the end step for next turn. This in turn will let you choose Barrier Shot next turn (at least assuming he used his Shot this turn), which will allow you to drive him out of range with the Before Activation ability if you have priority, or use the Start of Beat ability to become immune if he has priority.
Go for big damage. He can't retreat or dash past you, so do a Magnificent Drive and dump all your concentration to knock him down to 4. It's priority is 4, and so if he plays Grasp you clash and switch to Magnificent Shot if he didn't play Counter and to Magnificent Meditation if he did. You still get priority and can hit for 6 or if you somehow don't get priority, he use the counters to soak (since any damage will stun you anyway).
Retribution Aegis could counter Magnificent Drive. Matt could ante two Vengeance tokens to give him Soak 4 and Stun Guard 4. The best Rodney could do is hit for three, get hit by Matt for two, and then Rodney would be left with just the one Concentration Counter he gets at end of turn, while Matt would have a full pool of Vengeance Tokens.
My vote's for Magnificent + Drive, you can be sure that Matt's going to expect a big hit from you with five concentration counters and will most likely pair either Retribution or Counter with an Aegis in order to get close to you, with Magnificent + 5 tokens the power of your strike comes from your concentration counters and not the card, so Aegis is much weaker. You should use Drive as a base because it prevents Matt from using Counter to stun you and remove your tokens early. And you can always get away from him if he comes close using anything other than retribution w/ the after activating effect of Magnificent. Great gameplay!
I really enjoy watching both of you playing games. There is this mutual respect. And I somehow "feel" that you are kind of similar, equal, 'the same type' of gamers. You spent thoroughly thought through decisions on any move you do, you seem to be full of respect for each other, and the way you play and explain things ... Well, that's some really nice and impressive way of introducing your fans to gaming. Awesome! Keep up the good work!
PETRIFYING MEDITATION is a pretty good combo here. If you need to, spend the 3 to grab priority, but you MUST spend the 2 to stun. Then you regain 2 concentration tokens to use on your next turn when you MAGNIFICENT DRIVE, and spend the 2 concentration to teleport away.
Barrier Shot seems like an interesting option. You'll only hit Matt for 2, but you spend the 4 counters to become impervious to his attack. The only way for him to counter this is to play a dash and run like a coward. Hopefully he'll make an aggressive move and waste some of those vengeance tokens. If he does retreat though, you can keep him at distance while you recover those concentration powers. Oh, Rodney, could you get a life counter in the screen for the both of you? I believe you're at 17, while Matt is down to 11? Wait... you're winning here?! ;)
He could actually counter this with a counter shot, which would stun Rodney and make him lose his five concentration tokens. I'd advise against using the same base card that Matt has.
Kroz1776 Oh, you're right. I had completely read over Counter's start of beat ability... Barrier Drive would work, but Ben Green's more aggressive suggestion, Magnificent Drive, might be better given that Rodney still has quite a lot of life points left.
Tabletop used to be my favorite show, then it was Tom, Zee, and Sam, but Rodney you've taken the top spot in my list. I just bought this game about a week ago, and being able to see you play is alot of fun. Next years fundraiser I'm gonna buy a game with ya! Thanks for doing the series.
Magnificent Grasp! Spend those tokens and make him pay for getting close. I feel like you guys missed the opportunity to sound like a videogame fighter by not announcing the moves in dramatic, macho voices. Vengeful Drive!
Rodney: It looks like your best chance against Matt is as follows. 1) Tap Icy Manipulator to tap Eligor 2) Tap Royal assassin to destroy Eligor. Matt may still win though so be careful. :P
Hey Rodney, have to be on the lookout for your next visit to Halifax and the boardgamecafe, I got this game last week but have yet to get a chance to play it. Your implementation of this format worked really well, bravo.
Since you're full of Meditation counters it might be time to spend them: play Petrifying Shot, spend 3 tokens to become the active player and spend a fourth one to stun your opponent. You'll be able to hit him for a whopping 4 damage and he can't do much about it :) Next turn it might be a good idea to DASH, since he's pretty much got you in a corner.
This is so awesome! I love this youtube channel and the fact that you're playing one of favorite games of all time just makes it that much better! Seriously LOVE your stuff rodney! I was wondering if you could do an "advanced" match using pendros (i'm kind of confused as to how to use his environment tokens) it would also be cool to see you use the finishers too!
Magnificent Drive. Move up two at the start of activation, spend three concentration to hit him for 5, then blink away after activiation to the far side ofr the board with your last two.
Petryfying Drive, hitting for 4 and stunning Matt, followed by some kind of Meditation to regain your concentration counters on the next turn. What tactic do you have "on deck"?
I would play magnificent dash, it doesn't look like he can do anything but big up close/counter attacks, so no matter what he'll burn a pair, plus you can teleport away if you want, and go back up to 4 tokens.
Eligor is an up-close-and-personal type of character, and so any move that causes damage and moves Marmelee closer to him is in actuality better for him. Marmelee is better fighting at a distance, but there's not really any distance she can achieve this turn with Eligor sitting in the middle of the board. Thus, her best move may be to do something to prepare to change the battle back into her type of fight. The best method of doing that would be to dash past Eligor, winding up 1 space away from him as the turn ends. Dashing negates any of the damage Eligor may be intending to dish out this turn as well. So, if you dash, you have to ask yourself which one. Not Barrier, obviously, as you're better off reserving that for next turn. I'd say Magnificent Dash is your best move, as it guarantees you successfully pull off this move even if Matt suspects you may be doing this.
It might be worth speculating what Matt is most likely to use as his attack. Seeing as people have pointed out that Matt actually has 5 tokens possible to ante, and if Matt believes Rodney would use a Drive to avoid his possible Counter, Matt may believe his best move to be Martial Aegis, for 4 more damage than Rodney does to Matt. Otherwise, he will be likely to use his Counter and one of the moves that is not Dash or Aegis. It is pretty much a waste for him to make a Counter Dash which cannot do any damage, even if he does manage to destroy Rodney's concentration, nor would Counter Aegis be a reasonable combo, as it removes one of the bigger draws of the Counter card. Since Rodney's best moves appear to be Dash, Meditation, or Drive by popular consensus, we should probably imagine Matt to come up with the same conclusion. Thus, the probabilities indicate Matt will be highly likely to use Martial Aegis this next turn.
With games that offer several different modes of play, we usually pick the one we think will be the most common, leaving the other styles for players to check out on their own.
I've seen the rave reviews and I was pretty excited about getting this for my son and I. But, after watching this, I don't get it. Doesn't seem that interesting, am I missing something here? Is it the picking of your strategy vs. your opponent, trying to outguess them, like a glorified RPS?
I wouldn't say you're missing anything, it just means the game might not be the right fit for you. That's okay, the hope of the video is to help you decide what works and doesn't based on your particular interests.
1. First play Petrifying + Drive
2. if you do not win Priority spend 3 concentration counters to get priority.
Then advance 2 spaces "drive "before activating advance 1 or 2 spaces.

I actually understand this a lot better than I did when I first watched the "How to Play" That makes me happy!

Why has Rodney liked two comments I've made from 5+ years ago? 🤣
Is he just that deep into his notifications?

I felt a pretty kindred connection to Matt the first time we sat down to a table together (in person). I'm glad it's coming across.

Rob, great to hear you enjoy our series so much, that puts a smile on my face. You put me in great company with those other fine gamer gents.
Magnificent Grasp! Spend those tokens and make him pay for getting close.

I just saw a trailer for a Guilty Gear board game made by these guys, so I'm back here to re-watch these videos to hype me up!
Hey Rodney, have to be on the lookout for your next visit to Halifax and the boardgamecafe, I got this game last week but have yet to get a chance to play it. Your implementation of this format worked really well, bravo.
Absolutely! Hope I can get out there again soon.
Cool idea to use guest players over video chat.
For some games like this, it works really well (and I was tired of losing to Luke!).

My schedule for the next few weeks is really crammed because of some travel, so no plans for another BattleCon gameplay session at this point.
Magnificent Drive. Move up two at the start of activation, spend three concentration to hit him for 5, then blink away after activiation to the far side ofr the board with your last two.

Would love to see more battlecon matches!
Glad you enjoyed this one! With so many games, and so little time, I rarely repeat games we've already demonstrated - but I like your enthusiasm!
I would play magnificent dash, it doesn't look like he can do anything but big up close/counter attacks, so no matter what he'll burn a pair, plus you can teleport away if you want, and go back up to 4 tokens.
Really cool video! Thanks! Looking forward to more! :)
Magneicent grasp all tokens for 7 damage. Then meditan drive for 5 damage. That would be a round

i say do petrieying shot i hope i spelled it right and use the concentration counters
Would you guys show how some of the boss fights work in BattleCON?
With games that offer several different modes of play, we usually pick the one we think will be the most common, leaving the other styles for players to check out on their own.
Concentrate, Rodney! Concentrate!
I will, I really will this time!
Nevermind, I was thinking On Hit occurred when you were hit, now when you score a hit.
Rodney is playing suprisingly well this time. That means he is gonna lose this one badly.
I've been having the same feeling...
I've seen the rave reviews and I was pretty excited about getting this for my son and I. But, after watching this, I don't get it. Doesn't seem that interesting, am I missing something here? Is it the picking of your strategy vs. your opponent, trying to outguess them, like a glorified RPS?

***** it was truly informative, great service to the community, keep it up, thanks ;)
Looks like fun. Hey Rodney, are to starting to grow a mustache? The hair looks a little longer below the nose. :)
No plans for that, but it does grow in quick, and we were playing later in the evening :)
Sorry Rodney, I really like you but I like Eligor too much to not be routing for him!
I like Eligor too, but I'm still hoping I pull this off :)
I still have a bit of hope for ya. You always get beat up by the kids, you deserve one, once in a while!
