Hi Dad, thanks so much for these videos. Video suggestion: "How to patch drywall... because you tried to hang your own curtains BEFORE asking for help."
Hey man, I lost my dad when I was 15 years old, and this I gotta say this simple movie about hanging up a shelf kind of really touched me. Thank you so much for this, you warning me to not put holes in an apt wall before asking my landlord is the kind of dadvice I need in my life..
I grew up in the system without parents, now I'm 25 and trying to adult and these videos make it so much easier to do things without feeling like a complete failure of a human. Thank you for all you do 🧡
You've got this! It takes time but you'll be a DIY master in no time! It's a great feeling being able to fix things in your own house on your own. Love to ya!
I'm 54, I may be older than "Dad". Mine taught me things when I was younger & he wasn't on a bender. I lost him when I was 16. There were lots of things left to learn. After a really nasty divorce & being homeless for 3 years, I've finally bought a place with no idea how to seed a yard or how to fix the pond & lake the workers made in my front & back yard, or install a fence. Thanks for being here for everyone.
My friend told me about you. I'm 15 and my father left me and my mom when I was 4. I haven't seen him for a decade now and I don't want to. Thank you for making these videos. You have no idea how it helps me (and my mom). So please, don't stop.
For me it’s the same story here. Grew up with a single mom and sisters, never had a dad and certainly won’t need one now :) I’m 19 and moving away soon, so this content is really helpful for when I move into my own place!
What so many "how-to" videos miss is that we are looking for this on youtube because we have no idea where to start. Thanks for breaking down what might seem "simple" but are necessary steps to think out loud for the sake of us who have never done this kind of thing before. I have an amazing Dad, but I still appreciate being able to watch these, thank you.
My father passed away a few years back too, he taught me so much about car maintence, home repair etc. My parents separated when I was a toddler so I've always kind of been the "man" of the house. I find myself forgetting some of the things hes taught me, so I've been writing them down in a little scrapbook. I know it sounds silly but it's even sillier to break down at 4am when you're trying to remember where the studs are in the walls, I couldn't remember that it was supposed to be 16 and a half inches on center and lost it lol. It's a good way to remember the little things like that and I highly reccomend it. anytime something pops into my head that hes taught me I go write it down. I'm sorry about the loss of your father and I hope these videos bring you as much joy as they do me 💖
My dad passed when I was 16. So I really appreciate this channel as well. I’ve found that so few people know how to do these things. My friend taught me how to use a drill just a few months ago.
I lost my dad back in 2017 who taught me some basics but he was our Mr. Fix It and I used to call him for simple things I needed help with just to talk to him randomly. Thank you for these videos.
Totally can relate! Mine past away 9 yrs ago and almost every day I think what would dad do now and how 😕....this feels good to learn it as a "dadvice" not only by a regular tutorial video. It feels comforting 🥰
If my dad would had taken a single day off to teach me something like this, it would be a memory I would treasure forever, but that never happened. It is touching to see this, thank you for this.
Yes! My late dad was actually a teacher, but between farming and teaching, he rarely took time to teach us these skills. I’m so glad to have found this!
My dad is a jack of all trades, but also an alcoholic, so he never taught me anything useful. Thank you for being here when other dad's will not/ cannot. 🖤
I kept on asking my dad for help on getting a shelf in my room but he just really told me is go find a video I started to do stuff on my own and realized I didn't know what I was doing so then I found you and thank you this helps a lot and I've been left in tears thank you for being a good dad
I’m 43, and know how to do a lot of these things by now, but my father died when I was two and I had an abusive step father. I cannot stop watching these videos.
I lost my father 9 years ago today. Finding this channel warmed my heart and gave me something I thought I had lost forever. Thanks for these skill videos.
I think many people are missing this 1 on 1 time that isn't yelling, frustration, emberesmbent and patience from their parents. So when people see you explain things so flawlessly without judgment or frustration it's extremely comforting. You make it feel ok to mess up without the unnecessary ridicule. Make a mistake? Try again. And it's as simple as that. Thank you!
Hi! I'm not a dad but I know that curtains are very heavy, however it isn't much different from putting up a shelf without a drill. Make sure you have a stud finder, as you do not want to be guessing on where a window frame truly is due to shoddy workmanship or weird design. Might be overkill but why not be sure this isn't one of those weird times. Absolutely work with a helper. Make sure any chair or step-stool is on an even, safe surface and not too short. Use a ladder if you have to feel safe, better safe than stupid. Work from left side to right side as well. This way you don't miss steps. Left side, right side adjustment to it. If you try to adjust to much on both sides, you'l be all over the place. My steps will deal with putting up a three piece curtain rod (ie two seperate brackets and a rod) and not some all-in-one adjustable package. You need a level, screwdriver, pencil, stud finder, stepstool/ladder/chair (two if wanted), 1) Measure - Find and mark the studs. Find out where on the left side you'd like to place the bracket, use a pencil in the holes to mark it. Feel free to be messy, it's a pencil, just be clear. Get the curtain rod and the helper to place the right side bracket on the wall near where you'd like it. Put the rod on the brackets and using a level on the rod, adjust the right hand side up or down until the rod is level. Then mark the holes on the right hand side. Dad does the same with the shelf in this video. 2) Screw Holes - Yeah this is going to suck because you don't have a drill. However this can be done with willpower. You take a screw and just screw in that pilot hole like Dad did above for the shelf. However you are not a power drill with horsepower and torque, but it's going to be done anyways. You get a screw, and just screw that screw into the wall by hand. Please do not hurt yourself. If you for some reason have a smaller screw, use that to make the first hole, THEN use the appropriate screw to make the hole. A HAND drill can be purchased on the cheap almost everywhere, or found in thrift shops. However you can also pick up drills on Craigslist for C H E A P from businesses that went out or people who upgraded. I went from Black and Decker to DeWalt, and sold my old drill for ten bucks, some even give for free. B&D is good enough for most new peeps and small projects, DeWalt means you give it to your grandkids in your will because it will last that long. 3) Mount - Pop in the brackets and rod with however it works. Every model is slightly different but it should be inherent. Because you got teh holes, you don't need to work hard to get screws in. Because you levelled, the curtain is not uneven. Because you marked the studs, it won't fall! Good luck!
You're honestly a saint. My father Passed away back in 01 when I was 7. My mom did a wonderful job raising us all by her self, to me she's the greatest person in the world and I don't think she could've done a better job. However most of my life growing up I feel like a missed out on a lot of the interactions that a son should have with their dad. I was lucky I had a decently big family so a lot of my uncles and grandfather really did step up to try to recreate those interaction so I could get some of that fatherly guidance in life. I know not every kid out there has that same fortune I did and may only belong to a small family or just has no male figures around. You're a bastion of hope for these individuals, for the kids that would never had any of this guidance were it for you. I'm going on 26 this year and I never would've know for the life of me on how to put up a shelf, or unclog my tub . The amount of confidence you can stow up on an individual by taking that fatherly figure approach with these videos is is miraculous and I hope nothing stops you in this endeavor. :)
Sixty years young Mum and I’ve become the handywoman for my forty-two year old daughter. Although your younger than me, you’re now my Dad. I’ve bought the brackets, got the piece of wood, measuring tape and the screws. Off to the hardware for a level. (They’re starting to love my money there! We’re on a first name basis and I’m thinking I’ll have to remember their kid’s names now.) So thanks Dad. Biloela Queensland Australia.
Finding this channel made me cry. It is unbelievably sweet and kind of you to make these videos. The world need more gentle and kind people like you. Every second of kindness helps. Especially for people that don't get to experience much of it. Thank you, sending you love!
This man makes me wanna cry even when he’s teaching how to put up a shelf 😭 so adorable. My dad never taught me any of that as he wasn’t present in my life much so I appreciate this videos a lot❤️
Thank you for being such a kind gentle teacher. Unfortunately, I wasn’t raised by my dad, so I missed out on all of this stuff. Idk why I’m crying, I’m just grateful there are still nice people left in this world who are nice enough to share their skills and knowledge. Thank you, adopted dad! 😭❤❤
I wish I'd found this video a couple weeks ago. Nobody prepared me for this kind of stuff with home ownership, and I had no clue drywall/sheetrock screws existed. I decided to set up some shelves in my garage and very quickly realized the drywall on it's own wasn't gonna cut it.
CSDragon I found this out as well while hanging up some curtains in my home... lol. I didn’t even know how to use them when I finally got a hold of them. Knowing that Dad wasn’t just a phone call away anymore 😞 Thankfully TH-cam was there, but it’s just not the same
If you go into straight drywall, you need to use a drywall anchor. You predrill a whole recommend for the size anchor and screw you're going to use. Then you tap the anchor in with a hammer lightly, and then you can screw whatever you're hanging into the anchor and it should hold unless its is really heavy.
Thanks, Dad! Everyone else was trying to be way too fancy with floating shelves and gluing this, assembling that, cutting and shaping...this is about my skill level.
Thank you for this :) I'm quarantined away from my dad so I can't get his help and I need to put up a shelf cause I have a chronic n illness so I wanna to make my kitchen more accessible and easier to find things so thank you for this :)
You're incredible. I just subscribed to this channel. Not necessarily because I need it, but because I support this man and what he is doing. . . . . I lied. . . . I will probably need it.
I lost my dad last year tragically. This is the first time since losing him I've needed this channel. He had his own electrical company. Thank you for this.
My dad passed when I was 19, and I recently purchased my first home. I am emotional watching this because I think all the time about how I wish I could call my dad when I don’t know what to do about something. Thank you so much for this.
I lost my dad very recently, and he was the one who put up my last shelves. It’s really hard knowing I can’t call him to come help with them. Thank you for this video, showing me the priceless things my dad did for me. The joy with which you talk about taking care of these tasks reminds me of the look on his face when he would finish something and be so excited that it was done.
Thank you for this my father passed away when I was younger and he never taught me these things. The amount of times I've broken down crying about how I felt unprepared to become "the man of the house". You're doing an amazing thing and we all appreciate it
I lost my dad 7 years ago, when I was 21 and this is truly the best channel I’ve come across. So needed. Thank you for allowing those of us, who no longer have this, the opportunity to actually get real dad advice.
Thank you for starting this channel! My father passed away - he was an engineer and we used to do a lot of home projects together but I was very young and honestly have forgotten a lot of the how to details. I really appreciate the dadvice - it means so much. Thank you for your kindness.
i had to cut contact with my dad and his family due to his violent tendencies. i have always felt left out of the proper “dad experience” because of how he was and gosh your channel is just making me so happy. you are doing so many people a service that they never thought they would have access to
The thing I love about this channel is that these instructions are practical and not complicated. It's not like a professional DIY tutorial that shows you the perfect way to do something. It's just a normal dad showing you what works for him. I absolutely love that. Thank you so much for making these.
Well sir you taught me more in 20:13 than my dad has in 32 years. I sincerely appreciate these videos, there are a lot of us out here who never had this kid of “Dadvice” keep it up!!
I just find your channel, and it is what we all 20 and something people like me without a dad or mom to teach us how to do basic stuff we need. There are plenty of tutorials of how to do stuff, but you transmit such a big dad energy that actually can be felt as a viewer.... Thank you soo much!!
Im married and my husband is amazing, but there is something about listening to a Dad tell you how to put up a shelf, or anything for that matter. nI think Dads just know how to explain things to their kids. Mine passed away many years ago, so I'm so thankful I found this. channel.
I have some sort of anxiety and feel bad when I ask people what I see as 'stupid' questions. I have a dad, but I feel safe learning things from this guy. Not saying my dad is bad, he's great but of course I feel stupid for asking him questions. Thank you, man, I needed this really badly.
Thank you so much! My husband just passed away this year and he was my handyman 💙 I have moved to a new home and I need to be independent. Your kind and gentle demeanor helps me stay calm and be able to do things correctly. 👍 Plus, I have all the awesome tools that I bought him over the years!
This totally brought tears 😢😢 my boys lost their dad 5yrs ago. Thank you for having such a wonderful heart. Reading your story you well know how much boys need their dads in their lives. I wish I would have seen your video last year when graduation came around and I didn’t know how to do his tie😢 Thank you 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I really appreciate everything you do for thousands of people. I actually live with my dad but he can’t do anything because of his medical conditions so I became the “handy man” in the house, and I find these videos helpful! I’m so thankful that you post these things!❤️
My grandpa is and has been my father figure for all these years and still not having an actual dad has made a difference. I am still truly thankful for my grandpa for teaching me what he could, how he could but this channel helped me in other aspects
I never met my father, left when my mom was pregnant of me. This really hits home! You are truly a good soul doing something like this. We really appreciate this!
Thank you for putting these up, my father was 10 the last time I saw him, that was 34 years ago, he's still alive but has no interest, and my stepfather never liked me and he wanted nothing to do with me, haven't seen him in 10 plus years when him and my mother finally divorced. I ended up learning to do things out of books in the library and because I simply wanted to know and be independent. Glad to see there's someone out there looking out for kids today whose fathers have no interest in.
I really appreciate this. My dad passed away in 2020. He was in the construction industry and was a big DIY kind of guy. He knew a lot about everything, from building things to fixing cars - I tried to learn what he taught me but admittedly I don't remember a lot of it. I just moved out on my own and have been pretty lost when it comes to DIY projects, which makes me miss him even more. I can't call him for help anymore, but these videos are super comforting and helpful. Thank you for what you do!
I’ve been wanting to put up shelves for a long time now. When I saw your daughters post on Facebook I knew I had to check out your video. This was so helpful so detailed and I learned so much. I’ve tried to put shelves up in the past and ended up with a few wholes and no shelves haha. I’ll definitely will be getting a stud finder. Thank you for this and for being an amazing dad! 💗
Also having a helper or two makes all the difference! Having someone help look at the level, holding the shelf, or even just having a cellphone camera flashlight providing extra light can be very helpful.
My guy drilled a pilot hole with the screw he was going to use but he fully eye-balled the level of the hangar - That's some real OG dad shit right there
Guys... I lost my dad when I was a baby. I'm a girl. I've tried all my life to figure out how to do things. I'm 57. And finally, I find this fellow. What a man! Men... see how important you are? We need you! Your kids need you! Your women need you! We even need your corny dad jokes.
Me too ! 56 ! Widow - then with abusive handyman for far too long cuz I needed his help with my fixer upper. He doesnt help me anyways. Fuk that. Buying my own tools & subscribing! I will find much nicer boyfriend & wont feel trapped anymore lol
The way you phrase that we women need men was unnecessary. Though I won’t hold it against you because it’s probably the way you were raised to belive. I see this pattern in older people who were sadly not taught that there is no man or woman job everyone regardless of gender needs to learn basic life skills time is moving on and our society is making moves to show that anyone can and will need to eventually learn stuff like this.
Thank you so much for this. It is so thoughtfully put together. I am actually working on putting up decorations on my wall so this was very helpful! Could you kindly make a video on how to patch up walls? You know, mistakes sometimes happen haha. Links to products you would recommend if possible? Such as putty, etc. A link to those sheet rock anchors in this video would be nice too :D Thank you very much for your time!
I applaud your passion and your reasoning behind this. There needs to be more people willing to step up to be good mentors for there family. I think we as a society need to focus more on stuff like this then handing your 2 year old a tablet to get em out of your hair!!! . Teach your kids !! Love your kids, help your kids , in the end family is all you have.
Oh By the way i shared this! on All my socials there will be over 1M people that sees my post , SIR i hope u have so much success and i hope you are blessed in many ways.
This channel is a holy grail. Since my dad passed away, I've been having a hard time fixing or building stuff on my own since my mom and sister don't know shit. We always fix or build things together with my Dad. I'm glad I came across this channel. Thanks Dad!
Definitely need a video for basic tools to have around. I'm 42, and I know a few things, but would love to learn a lot more. Thank you for being you, and helping us out.
I’ve been a user of TH-cam since 2005, and this is the first time I’ve ever subscribed AND turned on all alerts... I needed this so bad in my life. Thank you dad 🥺💜
Using my finance’s account. I’m a daughter and my parents didn’t really teach me anything. They divorced when I was in 5th grade and both of them stopped being parents after that. So this video made me emotional. I thank you so much for doing this. You are making such a huge impact. Please keep them coming. I need to learn all the things!
I never learned the basics when I was a child. As a new home owner, this is the very best channel on TH-cam. Thank you so much for the great, helpful videos!
Dad, how do I? Oh yes, bought the drill and what do you call it cement hammer thing, but a bit intimidated. Also not sure how to buy the screws, drywall fittings, and measure the correct drill bit required. I want to build pantry shelves but the drill bit vs dry wall plastic support thing, I have no idea. You can tell by my terminology!
My mom did her best to teach me about tools and handy work but it’s different from a dad. You are changing peoples lives one bit of dadvice at a time, thank you❤️🙌🏼 hope you don’t mind but you are now my TH-cam dad 💡🙌🏼 thanks a lot for the instructions 💯
Just a little..."dadvice".
You're just, the best.

Not one lie was told.
My dad passed away a few years back, so I really really appreciate this channel. Thank you :)
I am sorry to hear you lost your dad Danielle, glad I could help. :0)
It is touching to see this, thank you for this.
yea...some reason they think, it s a man s job, girls don t ned to learn this.....pffff....
Get it all out…. We’re in this together.
Same here. I had to learn on my own, from books or word of mouth. ( before internet!)
Yes! My late dad was actually a teacher, but between farming and teaching, he rarely took time to teach us these skills. I’m so glad to have found this!
@@kathybuttsarnold3534 It sounds like your dad was a very busy man performing his main purpose in life...providing for his family
Dewalt needs to send this man a check. There's gonna be a million young people going out to buy dewalt drills this Black Friday.
or buying online, I doubt too many people will be going out!
Most companies won't pay out on free endorsements. In fact, that's how they thrive.

My dad is a jack of all trades, but also an alcoholic, so he never taught me anything useful. Thank you for being here when other dad's will not/ cannot. 🖤
Wow!! This really sums up my dad too.

for real, my dad did our whole house but never taught me a damn thing
Wow I guess I’m not alone.
I kept on asking my dad for help on getting a shelf in my room but he just really told me is go find a video I started to do stuff on my own and realized I didn't know what I was doing so then I found you and thank you this helps a lot and I've been left in tears thank you for being a good dad

Would be great for you to develop a “Dad Box” of tools for homowners.
I’m 43, and know how to do a lot of these things by now, but my father died when I was two and I had an abusive step father. I cannot stop watching these videos.
Man, this is amazing, I'm 29, no father and raised by a single mother. I never knew any of this
Thank you Dad!
I am currently not speaking to my father because of psychological abuse. I got new shelves and had no idea how to hang them. Thanks, this helps!! 😊
I lost my father 9 years ago today. Finding this channel warmed my heart and gave me something I thought I had lost forever. Thanks for these skill videos.
I am sorry for your loss Sarah, he's a good man to have this lovely idea eh :)
I am so sorry to hear that. I am sending you a virtual hug and blessings!
Thank you!
Hi "Dad", video suggestion: "How to put curtain rods without a drill". THANKS a lot!
You need a level, screwdriver, pencil, stud finder, stepstool/ladder/chair (two if wanted),
1) Measure - Find and mark the studs.
Good luck!
Yes please!
Yes!! I would love to learn.
DamienDarksideBlog Thanks a lot!! ❤️❤️❤️
DamienDarksideBlog thank you
Lost my dad in November’23 and I’m just so grateful this channel is here. My dad has so many tools so now it’s time for me learn how to use them ❤️
You're honestly a saint. :)
I don't even need to hang a shelf, but I watched this entire video and took notes - Thanks Dad!
I’m 21 and my dad and I never really had a relationship. I’m about to get my own place so thank you so much I appreciate it
Sixty years young Mum and I’ve become the handywoman for my forty-two year old daughter.

Knowing that Dad wasn’t just a phone call away anymore 😞 Thankfully TH-cam was there, but it’s just not the same
Congrats on the new house! My girl and I are celebrating our one year in our house, and it’s been an experience!
TheRealWallyWest that such an exciting milestone! Congrats to you two! 😁
If you go into straight drywall, you need to use a drywall anchor. You predrill a whole recommend for the size anchor and screw you're going to use. Then you tap the anchor in with a hammer lightly, and then you can screw whatever you're hanging into the anchor and it should hold unless its is really heavy.
Thank you my dad was the best at fixing things. 😭RIP since 2013
My dad passed away 2 years ago so I am happy to have someone explaining to me how to do basic stuff. Thank you 🙏🏻
Thanks, Dad! Everyone else was trying to be way too fancy with floating shelves and gluing this, assembling that, cutting and shaping...this is about my skill level.
My husband and I never had a dad, they walked out on us, this is great. Thank you so much.
I can definitely relate to the purpose of these videos. Im 23 and thank you man all these videos will help me once I get my house sooner this year!

I’m so sorry for your loss. I bet he’d be so proud to know you’re here learning how to do it yourself though, and thinking of him in the process.
Thank you for this my father passed away when I was younger and he never taught me these things. The amount of times I've broken down crying about how I felt unprepared to become "the man of the house". You're doing an amazing thing and we all appreciate it

i had to cut contact with my dad and his family due to his violent tendencies. i have always felt left out of the proper “dad experience” because of how he was and gosh your channel is just making me so happy. you are doing so many people a service that they never thought they would have access to
I’m glad you’ve cut that out of your life, hard as it may be. Good luck to you!

The thing I love about this channel is that these instructions are practical and not complicated. It's not like a professional DIY tutorial that shows you the perfect way to do something. It's just a normal dad showing you what works for him. I absolutely love that. Thank you so much for making these.
I couldn't have said it better Sara! Thanks for the encouragement! :0)

My father was by no means distant, in fact, I love him very much and he's very handy. We just never did these things together. Thank you for this!

Thank you so much, Dad. You explained this so well. Now I feel confident attacking this shelf project.
My Dad passed away 6 months ago and your videos are helping me a lot!! Thank you so so much!!

Thanks Nilka! Make sure to pick up an inexpensive level like I show in the video.
If you keep things level, it makes all the difference. 👍

Thanks, Dad! I really wanted to put a shelf up in my bathroom, and now I have the confidence to try it. I got that drill on Black Friday last year! :)
You're welcome Jessica. I will be doing a video on that drill in the near future. 👍
