MOTHER 1, Just the fact there are so many different party combinations and orders you can obtain the 8 melodies gives the game so much replayability factor. Not to mention the game's banger OST and the main characters feeling more like actual people with a goal to travel across the land in order to save the world other than just being the cliché chosen one destined to save the world that MOTHER 2 and so many other RPGs (and really a lot other medias as a whole) tend to do
The fact that the first 3 replies here all have different answers says a lot, haha Mine is Mother 3. The battle system is much more refined and interesting than the past games, scrolling HP has a bigger impact than in Mother 2 and the combos help mix things up and add some skill to the battles. I also really like the visuals, characters, and music more than the past games personally.
imo Mother 1 will always be my favorite game, not just im the series but in general there's something about it all that i absolutely love, the charming NES graphics, beautiful 8 bit melodies and campy writing make it so that it always has a nice spot in my heart ❤

It’s hard to rank them differently than the release order unless you have some really strong personal biases, since the quality of gameplay and presentation kept increasing. Mother 1 definitely had better story telling than 2, but 3’s storytelling is what makes it such a profound and memorable experience.
I respect this a lot. Despite me not finishing it yet, there's something about Mother 1 that just makes me feel something unique I haven't felt about the other 2 games. It's hard to explain, I think I feel more like the protagonist himself when I play Mother 1, I actually feel like a kid and his friends against the world, it feels... slightly more realistic I guess? Again, it's a little hard to explain, so I hope it's understandable.
for me, earthbound hits a nice middle ground in the series where it's still largely mechanically sound (my vanilla mother 1 experience was not fantastic lol) but retains that oldschool mystique. mother 3 is great and its more narrative-driven identity sets it apart from the rest, but earthbound doesn't explain itself nearly as much and i love it for it. kids on their way to cleanse the world of a cosmic evil, combined with some zany and pretty hypnotizingly soothing sound and world design. takes some genuinely creepy turns (not being as dialogue-focused helps here) and the final moments are crazy good. insanely creative piece of art, haven't had an experience like it before or since. just some really neat and sometimes disturbing vibes strung together in a happy package
