- Hi everyone,
My name is Mary and I found a way of turning on my dryer that wouldn’t turn on. First off, I’m not a technician, I just wanted to show you how I fixed my dryer!
I have a stackable washer/dryer (model: GE GUD27ESPM1DG), it’s a fairly new dryer, only a year old and wouldn’t think it would break this quickly. I tried everything at first, I turned the knob several times thinking that with some magic it would turn on. Lol I cleaned the lint basket, hit the start button over a dozen times and nothing made it turn on. I noticed the knob was turning quite easily, too easily! So I removed it and saw that it had this metal thing around the inside of the knob that would come off too easily. I removed it and saw that it was broken. (I made sure there was no power going to the dryer before removing the knob). I then proceeded to turn the inside of the know with a plier and it turned! I then turned the power back on and hit the start button. I heard the wonderful sound of the dryer spinning! Gloriously it turned in! It’s working now , I have to make sure I keep moving the knob with a plier but still east j can dry now. I’ll see if I can buy a new metal thing to go over the knob (I have no idea what the technical term is for these 😅) if I can’t find it, I will eventually have to call in a technician for assistance. But for now I can dry!

So glad I found your fantastic ON POINT video. It took a while to find a thumbnail title describing the same problem I'm having with my GE stackable dryer. Will definitely follow your suggestions AFTER turning off the circuit breaker first. Hope it works, but if not, I'm happy to have found your informative video. ❤️

Thank God I came across your video because I was puzzled on why all of sudden the dryer wouldn’t start and I saw your video and that was my exact situation. I got my adjustable wrench and boom it’s working…thank you again cause I was about to panic and take the whole dryer apart 🤣😭
January 2, 2023 - last load of wash done, dryer didn’t work or tumble. My brother installed the GE Laundry Center GUV27ESSM1WW, 7/20. Re-wired, re-plumbled, ripped out old flooring, installed new flooring not bad for a 64 yr. old. So the diagnosis - belt broke. Lucking in my neighborhood an Appliance part store, new belt - $ 42.00. Again 2 years later, he completely disassembled the dryer, all the wiring, the face panels, the drum and all.what was amazing was all the dryer lint on EVERYTHING, it was coated. I clean the lint trap and inside the lint trap every time. My OCD was in overdrive cleaning every crevice, vacuum, toothbrush, toothpicks to get everything clean. I know the major cause of dryer fires is build up of dryer lint. So a PSA remove a panel get into and beyond your dryer lint trap. So one day at a time, a some blood loss, the edges are very, very sharp putting it back together, success! It is working. My brother’s cost = priceless! I’m the oldest of 8 in my family, he is #3 in the hit parade. Glad to have him around to help his favorite sister. Happy New Year 2023 🎉

You’re a star! Saved me a lot of time! Thanks! They don’t sell the knobs! Idiots. Plastic on knob was cracked. I wrapped it around with a cable tie!

This was a life saver video...I thank you so much....other videos where talking rocket science. I tried what u said n my dryer started to work mine is the Mabe laundry centre....as u stated the knob was bad from the get go but I thought it was normal . Again thank you so much.

Thank you!!!! The little metal piece belongs in the knob.....on my dryer, it was the plastic piece in the knob that holds the metal piece was cracked, causing it to just spin around the dial without engaging.
Good observation nice work. Use an adjustable wrench vs needle nose to not scratch switch shaft. My dryer quit. I will see if mine is same problem. Thanks for sharing

I have the same model and bought mine in the summer of 2020 for my second house… i have used it like 15 times at most for these past two years… and today it just happened.. the knob came loose but actually the knob on the back cracked, thus it no longer hugs the metal protrusion tightly enough to turn in dryer. Going to buy a replacement to make life easier. I hope to find one quickly. Ty for your vid!! Hope you were able to find a long term fix… or have you been able to continue use the pliers?

I have this dryer does it have a fuse does that need to be replaced suddenly stop when dryer is full of lint.

Normally when I dryer won't turn on and you noticed that the knob turns freely all the way around the knob needs to be replaced. That little part that came off the dryer is part of the knob so you have to replace the entire knob and it should only cost you about 10 to $15 on Amazon to replace if not cheaper start reading and it starts now you might be able to find one at your local repair shop in your area. I've been fixing washer and dryers for the last 10 years and I know that is something like that goes wrong is you just replace the knob where the washer and dryer for the dryer Department if it turns all the way around and will not turn to the setting you need

You most likely need a new timer and knob. The metal sleeve goes inside the knob, which in your case the plastic knob is cracked cause the timer itself is harder to turn, which is breaking the knob. Replace timer and knob problem solved till next time.
Hey, were you ever able to find that little metal piece anywhere?
I haven’t tried to find it. :/ We’ve been using the dryer by turning the knob with pliers. Lol If I ever do find, I’ll post an update.
@@maryjones2624 the plastic on my knob was broken so we just glued the broken pieces back together and it works now. Also be careful using the pliers to turn it, I was doing the same and broke the little black pointing thing and had to replace the whole part
