Here in the west it is easy to criticize others. These guys are doing what they can with what they have to put food on the table. They work hard make it through another day. I'm sure if they had better tools available to them they would use them. It is hard for us to comprehend that all they have to work with tooling from the last century. My complaint is they have nice tools but using hand grinders & welding in lathes will ruin them very quickly, not to mention turning parts that hot will never result in accurate work. I like some of the work they do, some probably is a waste of time. Nothing wrong with the tools they have available, they are perfectly suited to the work they do. As a machine shop owner the economics interest me.
I could only tolerate watching up to the point to where he welded the bearings on what would have been a pretty nice machine to have. I couldn't take it anymore.

I think the chalk is used so that the machinist can easily see how deep the threads have been cut - the thinner the chalk line the deeper the thread and if the chalk line disappears completely then the thread has been cut too deep and they will have to start again with a new piece of steel.

Sorry to say but in an open economy this wouldn’t be going on. Someplace with more capital and technology would be making these better and cheaper and with a warranty. There is no point in wasting time and materials making crappy stuff. If they opened up their economy there would be a chance that these guys could get safer jobs making good quality stuff and even make it to middle age.
