As a former mechanic, I wouldn't advise you to use a crankshaft that had been broken that badly (unless I really don't like you). But as an engineer, it fascinates me how people solve their problems with what ever means they have available. It's almost poetic.
Video was great. After welding, drilling, tapping, welding again, trueing and balancing, and reparing all the gouges that were added onto critical surfaces, you can safely install this crank right into trash can. No offense.

I was quite nervous as I watched them weld, grind and drill so close to those journals, but I saw only one instance where there might have been some welding spatter left on one spot.
@@The144Kth either way, i wouldn't use that crankshaft in an engine. Building up a journal & grinding it is one thing, trying to weld cast & expecting it to hold together is another.

So, I don't know if someone actually tried to use this part in an engine after these repairs. I agree that the part will likely not last long. However, I do believe this video possese real value as a teaching exercise. As someone pointed out, we don't all have the luxury of having replacement parts readily available, or the funds to buy them. In other parts/equipment, these techniques could be key to salvaging equipment that would otherwise be a complete loss. And again, I understand that this particular component perhaps cannot be salvaged, but look at all of the thought and skills that went into its repair. Brilliant, and applicable to many other situations!

Acá en mi México es más fácil publicar en grupos de autopartes o pedirlas por mercado libre. Alla no tienen esa fortuna, es por lo mismo que le dan con todo a lo que tienen.

Так получилось, что я смотрел это видео ночью, и когда я увидел что они варят электросваркой коленвал - я не вольно закричал от ужаса! И разбудил весь дом. Мой крик , наверное, был слышен в самых дальних кишлаках Пакистана!
Theses guys are craftsmen restoring machinery without todays hi-tech shop equipment. I assume their work has use & longevity otherwise they wouldn't be in business. I wish them continued success!!

@@ИгорьЛысогоров-д7ц отец рассказывал что в советское время движок застучал по причине задира шейки. Машина стала на ремонт. Запчастей нет. Хочет уволится, но пока авто не на ходу не подписывают. Так по совету бывалого вкладыш были заменены пропитанным маслом кожаным ремнем, и ещё две недели до увольнения машина работала если не давать натяг и делала рейсы. Но это не значит что так можно делать и будет нормально. Это значит что там можно сделать в крайнем случае, когда невозможно достать или нечего терять.
It's not good, because cast iron very hard material for welding. Cast iron must be has high temperature before welding. Это плохо, чугун перед сваркой греют до 400с, потом варят аккуратно пока он горячий, затем также очень медленно в течение нескольких часов (если не суток) остужают с 400с На видео конечно работа интересная и выполнена на коленке, на такой коленвал долг не протянет.. тем более учитывая 4ю шейку - самую нагруженную...
You asked “how was your work?” That depends on the final destination for this crankshaft. If it is to be used as a mailbox mount or a demo part of a training cut-out engine you guys did a tremendous job… if it is meant to be returned to use inside an engine you did a terrible job. If this crankshaft is intended for its original purpose the only way to know how you did is by doing two things: 1. Balance it to at least 5,000RPM and 2. Put into operation and drive at least 5,000Km and show proof that it’s still in operation, any other opinion does not mean anything. I am a machinist and these are the problems with this “repair.” A. using a wire to indicate concentricity is useless because in a repair like this, if ever meant for reuse, MUST be aligned within 0.001mm to eliminate misalignment within the bearings that will work against it. B. Then you must consider all the weight added by the bolts and the welding processes, the factory balance is gone and it must be rebalanced. C. The fact that it suffered an impact fracture of this magnitude means there could be other cracks that can’t be visible to the naked eye that could cause a subsequent catastrophic failure. Only a fool would try to use this part inside a working engine.

Who knows, what if they grind the crankshaft in the spine of the spine, grind the plane of the flywheel so that there is no vibration? As a time-served 6 years Fabrication Plater /welder your major mistake was to drill and tap for the three studs it took away any strength in the new joint. after a Brinel test you should have clamped the break together and supported the whole crankshaft along its length braced with angle Iron. Set it up in the lathe and ensure correct allignment ground out the V for the welding and put in a root weld Using low hydrogen rods 10swg the whole of the break should have been welded with low hydrogen rods after heating in an oven. Your welding set was crummy it should have been a DC set. After welding the crank then needed heat treatment to stress relieve it check again for alignment if it was out of alignment heat the angle iron bracing and the crank to expand or shrink the crank to align it, Harden and temper the crank to suit the spec Do another Brinel test before a regrind. I have repaired many crankshafts for classic British motorcycles broken /worn out big ends built up / knackered splines / resized for metric mains triples twins singles new threads Sq 4s.... There is a limit with the cast iron flywheels and where the break is especially small bearing crankshafts.
I think you should have built a U-shaped fixture in the lathe from steel plate that would hold the journals in alignment while aligning the break. Then preheat the joint and weld it with the appropriate rod and post-heat. It’s going to be out of balance which will tend to shorten the life which is already short with this type repair. That said, you did the best you could under the circumstances. Hopefully, there will be enough service life to justify the effort.
I would personnaly put some duct tape on the side of the crankshaft to add some extra strength to the weld. And I'd show another finger to the viewers at the end of the video. At least, I laughed for ten minutes ( at 2x speed, not to waste too much time...) LOL
some things you can't fix, including crankshaft. Buy new ones, this is safer. for the cameraman, stop pointing your finger. most people who watch such videos have technical background.
If we suppose that this can work... Why you didn't re-check the runout after second welding operation?! Sorry.. This is a waste of time and effort and maybe money...

This has to be a joke. The cheek in that journal still has a huge exposed crack all along its radius. That's critical its correct. There is a oil gallery that runs through there. It needs to be spray welded and ground on a crank grinder. All these things left un repaired leads me to think this is a joke. The 3 bolts they put in were too short to do anything. Views and comments are what make this channel hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Can you imagine what it's like to be the customer that paid for a rebuilt engine, finally got it all put back together, and then saw it grenade after 100 revolutions. Now you own 4 busted connecting rods, 4 punched out pistons, and 8 bent valves. I'm sure they'll fuck up the block some how.

These guys will face serious repurcussions from one customer or another if it fails after 100 revs. Such workmanship has been going on means it works for the customers.
@@devoch2031 I don't think you're aware of how crankshafts and connecting rods work. The connecting rod and its bearing don't touch the crankshaft journal. The oil pressure that is delivered through the oil gallery of the shaft, and that oil pressure keeps the bearing and crankshaft journal from touching. Aside from the fact that the oil will never have enough pressure to prevent this, the oil is going to spray out through THE MASSIVE CRACK IN THE USELESS CRANKSHAFT. The other thing that you have paid no attention to, was that the brain dead idiot threaded a bolt right through the gallery. The rod bearing of this connecting rod will spin the first time the engine reaches 1,000rpm. So much for all the other parts this customer put into his "New" engine. But hey, that's his problem. There's some fouls in the U.S. that think this shaft is as good as brand new.
Watching that brought back early memories of things I should not have even tried. I welded up a broken crankcase that had a rod bust a hole through it then after congratulating myself for the beaut job I did found that a main bearing next to the broken con rod was so twisted that the crank wouldn't go back in. I scraped the bearing so it would go in but then it lost oil pressure and the engine flew to bits again once I installed it ! OMG being young is a crime !

At the cost of the average crankshaft, this isn’t just a waist of time, but can cost more money in damage if it fails. Very likely to fail. Some parts you repair and some you replace. I get that they might not have quick access to new parts, but is more damage worth it🤷♂️
A truly heroic effort to save that crank, but any bets on how long that weld will stay together above idle speed? Or even through the first cranking cycle?
These particular cranks often break just like this, obviously inadequate design strength so "repaired" this way I don't see it lasting more than minutes under load. If it will even turn in a block. Straightening after welding wasn't shown if it was done.
@@billmiller7138 it wasn't balanced either, that engine is going to vibrate like hell at idle, put any kind of load on it, & it's going to disintegrate within minutes of initial start-up.
I did this to a VW engine just for the experiment and it still runs great. I heat the crank more before welding. I cut the rod journals .010 and the mains .020 afterwards. I have about 30 k on the engine now. I believe the threading and torque strength of the bolts were the key along with the preheat. This was just an experiment out of bordum mind you but it's a running.

Cast crank, no preheat, no post heat = eventual second failure……… I applaud the ingenuity, and resilience, but as stated, some things are just better off being replaced.
So much ingenuity with in these videos. Love the usage of hardened bolts, grinding and welding to make a solid piece. Tapping out the holes to add hardened bolts and the welding the gaps, and grinding down the excess and polishing to make it work. you guys are the true recyclers. The old school calipers are dope.

I have too agree with folks on here about the strength of the welds holding that crankshaft together. I hope this was just a demonstration for TH-cam. I enjoy watching the videos though.
So they turned a 2 piece crankshaft into a 5 piece crankshaft. Nice work guys, this will be good for repeat business. This contraption will almost certainly pop a nice window in the block, which will give them another opportunity to make a fabulous video of one guy working, one guy holding a camera and three guys watching in disbelief at the "repair". I can't wait for that one to come out. In the repair business, sometimes you have to say "no, it's not worth it". Pakistan has got to have at least one bone yard to source a replacement.

@@emlkl1779 It is most certainly cast iron. 0:13 If you look directly to the right of the fractured pin (crank centerline) you'll see a thin rib of material. It is cast iron. the rough texture of the counterweights is another give away. Quality crankshafts are forged steel. A forged crank has a much wider rib in that area as the forging dies form the steel into the rough shape of a crankshaft. If you're interested, search "How is a crankshaft machined after casting? Honestly, they did such a bad job of this, with the MASSIVE runout and dodgy welding, that I think we've been had. This isn't actually a repair video at all, and it's just made for clickbait!
If you are not great mechanical engineer you can't admire this work thouse people are so talented and hard workers with only simple equipments just imagine if they have mor professional tools what they wil do
That would be a throw away part in UK or Europe but when needs must and wagon needs to drive. As a mechanic 15 yr a whole new meaning to a lightened and balanced crankshaft this would be interesting to see under load @3500rpm. Should do a follow up video. Hats off all the same for improvisation and neat welding i hope it works
Very nice work! Necessity is the mother of invention? Did I see the gentleman butter up a lobe with a mild steel SMAW rod? If so, it's not going to weigh the same and is really dissimilar metal? I would have thought they might have tried a preheat, try a NI rod, post heat cool down and hope for the best? I admire these guys as I would have written off the crankshaft as a total loss. But these guys are first rate. They really are.
@@antonisautos8704 Did they get it back in? If they did? This is what will happen: The dissimilar structural seel for light guage don't admix well with the carbon moly in that crank? It will last less time than it took to put that engine back together. What did the whe gasket set cost plus oil, time, shop consumables? Plus a new bearing set and all that time?
Cast metal is molten metal poured into a mold, it has no grain to weld too. I wouldn't do it to a forged crank either because it's too big a job to get to and replace. Interesting concept.
That's because we wouldn't put junk like that in anything we own. We spend a little extra money to replace bad parts like that, we take pride in our work, whereas they try to get every last ounce of use out of something & will tepair the same thing 3 times when we do it once.

After installing three screw plugs, there is no way he didn't plug the oil hole in that crank. No oil to #4 rod bearing.

@@ИгорьЛысогоров-д7ц отец рассказывал что в советское время движок застучал по причине задира шейки. Машина стала на ремонт. Запчастей нет. Хочет уволится, но пока авто не на ходу не подписывают. Так по совету бывалого вкладыш были заменены пропитанным маслом кожаным ремнем, и ещё две недели до увольнения машина работала если не давать натяг и делала рейсы. Но это не значит что так можно делать и будет нормально. Это значит что там можно сделать в крайнем случае, когда невозможно достать или нечего терять.

Это плохо, чугун перед сваркой греют до 400с, потом варят аккуратно пока он горячий, затем также очень медленно в течение нескольких часов (если не суток) остужают с 400с
На видео конечно работа интересная и выполнена на коленке, на такой коленвал долг не протянет.. тем более учитывая 4ю шейку - самую нагруженную...
А насчёт зил 130 мне вообще всегда казалось, что такой коленвал сломать не возможно)))

You asked “how was your work?” That depends on the final destination for this crankshaft. If it is to be used as a mailbox mount or a demo part of a training cut-out engine you guys did a tremendous job… if it is meant to be returned to use inside an engine you did a terrible job. If this crankshaft is intended for its original purpose the only way to know how you did is by doing two things: 1. Balance it to at least 5,000RPM and 2. Put into operation and drive at least 5,000Km and show proof that it’s still in operation, any other opinion does not mean anything.
I am a machinist and these are the problems with this “repair.”
A. using a wire to indicate concentricity is useless because in a repair like this, if ever meant for reuse, MUST be aligned within 0.001mm to eliminate misalignment within the bearings that will work against it.
B. Then you must consider all the weight added by the bolts and the welding processes, the factory balance is gone and it must be rebalanced.
C. The fact that it suffered an impact fracture of this magnitude means there could be other cracks that can’t be visible to the naked eye that could cause a subsequent catastrophic failure.
Only a fool would try to use this part inside a working engine.

As a time-served 6 years Fabrication Plater /welder your major mistake was to drill and tap for the three studs it took away any strength in the new joint. after a Brinel test you should have clamped the break together and supported the whole crankshaft along its length braced with angle Iron. Set it up in the lathe and ensure correct allignment ground out the V for the welding and put in a root weld Using low hydrogen rods 10swg the whole of the break should have been welded with low hydrogen rods after heating in an oven. Your welding set was crummy it should have been a DC set. After welding the crank then needed heat treatment to stress relieve it check again for alignment if it was out of alignment heat the angle iron bracing and the crank to expand or shrink the crank to align it, Harden and temper the crank to suit the spec Do another Brinel test before a regrind. I have repaired many crankshafts for classic British motorcycles broken /worn out big ends built up / knackered splines / resized for metric mains triples twins singles new threads Sq 4s.... There is a limit with the cast iron flywheels and where the break is especially small bearing crankshafts.

I think you should have built a U-shaped fixture in the lathe from steel plate that would hold the journals in alignment while aligning the break. Then preheat the joint and weld it with the appropriate rod and post-heat. It’s going to be out of balance which will tend to shorten the life which is already short with this type repair. That said, you did the best you could under the circumstances. Hopefully, there will be enough service life to justify the effort.
I would personnaly put some duct tape on the side of the crankshaft to add some extra strength to the weld. And I'd show another finger to the viewers at the end of the video. At least, I laughed for ten minutes ( at 2x speed, not to waste too much time...) LOL

This has to be a joke. The cheek in that journal still has a huge exposed crack all along its radius. That's critical its correct. There is a oil gallery that runs through there. It needs to be spray welded and ground on a crank grinder. All these things left un repaired leads me to think this is a joke. The 3 bolts they put in were too short to do anything.

Can you imagine what it's like to be the customer that paid for a rebuilt engine, finally got it all put back together, and then saw it grenade after 100 revolutions. Now you own 4 busted connecting rods, 4 punched out pistons, and 8 bent valves. I'm sure they'll fuck up the block some how.

@@devoch2031 I don't think you're aware of how crankshafts and connecting rods work. The connecting rod and its bearing don't touch the crankshaft journal. The oil pressure that is delivered through the oil gallery of the shaft, and that oil pressure keeps the bearing and crankshaft journal from touching. Aside from the fact that the oil will never have enough pressure to prevent this, the oil is going to spray out through THE MASSIVE CRACK IN THE USELESS CRANKSHAFT. The other thing that you have paid no attention to, was that the brain dead idiot threaded a bolt right through the gallery. The rod bearing of this connecting rod will spin the first time the engine reaches 1,000rpm. So much for all the other parts this customer put into his "New" engine. But hey, that's his problem. There's some fouls in the U.S. that think this shaft is as good as brand new.

Watching that brought back early memories of things I should not have even tried. I welded up a broken crankcase that had a rod bust a hole through it then after congratulating myself for the beaut job I did found that a main bearing next to the broken con rod was so twisted that the crank wouldn't go back in. I scraped the bearing so it would go in but then it lost oil pressure and the engine flew to bits again once I installed it ! OMG being young is a crime !

A truly heroic effort to save that crank, but any bets on how long that weld will stay together above idle speed? Or even through the first cranking cycle?
These particular cranks often break just like this, obviously inadequate design strength so "repaired" this way I don't see it lasting more than minutes under load. If it will even turn in a block. Straightening after welding wasn't shown if it was done.

I did this to a VW engine just for the experiment and it still runs great. I heat the crank more before welding. I cut the rod journals .010 and the mains .020 afterwards. I have about 30 k on the engine now. I believe the threading and torque strength of the bolts were the key along with the preheat. This was just an experiment out of bordum mind you but it's a running.

Tapping out the holes to add hardened bolts and the welding the gaps, and grinding down the excess and polishing to make it work. you guys are the true recyclers. The old school calipers are dope.

This contraption will almost certainly pop a nice window in the block, which will give them another opportunity to make a fabulous video of one guy working, one guy holding a camera and three guys watching in disbelief at the "repair". I can't wait for that one to come out.
In the repair business, sometimes you have to say "no, it's not worth it". Pakistan has got to have at least one bone yard to source a replacement.
Honestly, they're joking, right? Cast iron isn't terribly repairable in a non stress, non structural form. This crank is garbage, plain and simple.

It's not cast iron. Cranks are forged. So can be welded. I am just not sure about the strength of that weld though
@@emlkl1779 It is most certainly cast iron. 0:13 If you look directly to the right of the fractured pin (crank centerline) you'll see a thin rib of material. It is cast iron. the rough texture of the counterweights is another give away. Quality crankshafts are forged steel.
A forged crank has a much wider rib in that area as the forging dies form the steel into the rough shape of a crankshaft. If you're interested, search "How is a crankshaft machined after casting? Step by step walkthrough in factory" (amazing things official channel)

Honestly, they did such a bad job of this, with the MASSIVE runout and dodgy welding, that I think we've been had. This isn't actually a repair video at all, and it's just made for clickbait!

That would be a throw away part in UK or Europe but when needs must and wagon needs to drive. As a mechanic 15 yr a whole new meaning to a lightened and balanced crankshaft this would be interesting to see under load @3500rpm.

Very nice work! Necessity is the mother of invention? Did I see the gentleman butter up a lobe with a mild steel SMAW rod? If so, it's not going to weigh the same and is really dissimilar metal? I would have thought they might have tried a preheat, try a NI rod, post heat cool down and hope for the best? I admire these guys as I would have written off the crankshaft as a total loss. But these guys are first rate. They really are.
The crank in this video won't last long. I wouldn't run that even if it cost 1/4 of a new one.

It will last less time than it took to put that engine back together. What did the whe gasket set cost plus oil, time, shop consumables? Plus a new bearing set and all that time?

Cast metal is molten metal poured into a mold, it has no grain to weld too. I wouldn't do it to a forged crank either because it's too big a job to get to and replace. Interesting concept.
That's because we wouldn't put junk like that in anything we own. We spend a little extra money to replace bad parts like that, we take pride in our work, whereas they try to get every last ounce of use out of something & will tepair the same thing 3 times when we do it once.
That's nonsense.
These guys want to repair the things , that we need to replace !! Height of imagination !!
