The History of Dior | Hello Fashion | Kate Young

- In the world of luxury fashion, Dior’s richness of history is practically unparalleled. On this episode, I visit the Brooklyn Museum’s “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” exhibition and walk through the house’s aesthetic evolution-one that’s been shaped by changes in style, historical context, and creative leadership.
I begin with the conception of the brand by Christian Dior in 1946. French women’s clothing at the time was utilitarian and pared down to the essential, as World War II had recently ended. Dior made headlines with his “New Look” design, an hourglass style characterized by a wasp waist and a full skirt. Dior’s designs soon attracted attention in America, and the house quickly became internationally recognized. Next I delve into Dior’s successors, which include Yves Saint Laurent, Mark Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri, each of whom has left their own distinct mark on the brand.
While Dior will inspire interest for decades to come, it is made exceptional because of its storied past as well as the codes that have become embedded in its foundation over time. Not every house could have an exhibition like the one at the Brooklyn Museum. Very few houses have created so much beauty, over so much time, and in so many ways.

I'm not that interested in fashion, neither do I want to be a fashion student in the future, but there's something beautiful and magical in learning fashion history from Kate 💗
❤️
I think it’s her clear joy and passion, it comes through as she talks about each & every piece or designer.

Loving the series, please keep them coming! Love fashion stories as opposed to just another handbag unboxing for the 100th time.
❤️❤️❤️
I can imagine sipping coffee and listen to you talk about fashion for hours ...so relaxing
🥰
I've seen the "Christian Dior: designer of dreams" exhibition and was blown away by the history of the house. The bar suit is my favourite ❤️
I’m visiting this weekend! So excited
Dior is one of those houses that evolves with the times, but never truly loses it spirit. That, I believe, is the mark of true art and glamour.
Edit: Typo
I could never have enough of your passion for fashion. Funny how they rhyme too.
These episodes are very entertaining and her way of speaking is very easy to understand.
I LOVE these haute couture history lessons! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
DROOLING!!! 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹Please don’t stop making your videos!!!!!!!! I so wish I could see this exhibition!
❤️
I have been looking for these types of videos for over a year. Thank you.
Thanks Kate for telling the history of fashion every week. Would love to see a detailed video like this on Ysl and Chanel
Love the way you talk about fashion, pasionate but down to earth.
❤️
I truly believe the sudden disappearance of Mr.Dior added to the mysticism and code that Yves and John carried forwards. Beautifully illustrated Kate! Always a pleasure seeing you dive into knowledge and taking us with you!
I saw the exhibition at London and just loved it!!!! Being a designer myself the toile room was my vision of heaven brought in to life!!!!
Me too 🤍
I grew up watching Fashion Television with Jeanne Beker in the 90’s, and loved it immensely. This series, and channel as a whole, gives me that same behind the curtain vibe. I love it. I’m no fashionista, but I adore fashion for what it is, and everything it means. Thank you, Kate!
🥰
Yes! I was waiting for this! I fell in love with Dior as a teenager watching Galliano's magic unfold. It was so exciting and we just don't get that much of a 'show' anymore. I miss the drama - the colours, the makeup, the head pieces, the out of this world fashion. Especially also since the passing of Lee McQueen. I also remember being completely blown away by that dress on Nicole Kidman. It was so different. It is the dress I always think of when talking about/watching red carpet fashion.
You've completely made my day. Thank you Kate xxxx
🥰
Kate, you are an absolute living legend!
Did.....did we just get a private tour of a Dior exhibition with exceptional historical background - FOR FREE?
I am blown away, again! Thank you so much for sharing with us!!!
💕💕💕
I love the storytelling style you offer when teaching the history behind each fashion house. It is engaging and enchanting. Perhaps you may select to share the story behind Ferragamo soon!
Another fantastic fashion lesson.
You looked incredible here, specially against the ghosts base dresses, very fitting for the season haha.
Kate!!!! This was beautiful and marvelous....I NEVER EVER EVER could get tired of hearing the Dior story and history...I swear I can hear it over and over...and the imagery...😍
I'm totally addicted to this series!
I’m still gagged why this channel is free! ❤️🥰
❤️❤️❤️
This video is wonderful. Thank you for taking the time and your love for the house of Dior is obvious.
This channel just popped up on my recommended page. Delighted!
I’m truly obsessed with Kate Young and these show, I’m hooked!!
Thanks Kate for giving us a tour to the latest DIOR exhibition. Monsieur Dior's legacy will live forever.
As a fan of the history of the House of Dior and the brand itself I have to say that this video is beautiful, simply beautiful. To me, all this designers have done a great job in their times, but John is the best one. And to me Nicole's dress is also one of the best dresses ever produced by Dior and by the industry of fashion in general, and maybe the best to ever be on a red carpet.
Sigh, I could look at Dior dresses forever. The history, the craftsmanship, the details all make me swoon. Someday I wish to own 1 piece.
Love your commentary in these videos. Please keep doing them!
Yesssss - my favorite series! I click on these so fast when I get a notification. 🤣
Kate, I wonder if at some point you would also consider doing deep-dives on any non-Western houses or some lesser-known houses as well?
I love the way you explain things
Your fashion videos just brighten my day, thanks Kate! 🙂
🥰
I really love these videos! They brighten my day!
Bravo Kate, Bravo!!!! 👏🏾👏🏼👏🏽👏🏻
Kate, I queued for 4 hours to see this exhibition in London in the V&A and it was the most magical day but you have just brought this to life in a way which I could never have anticipated! Your appreciation for the art and the meaning of fashion is so so so wonderful! I love your videos so much! 💕
💕💕💕
The chartreuse gown wore by Nicole tooky my breath away too when i saw it as a young girl on the red carpet! Maybe thats why i have this love for chinoiserie to this day. Hands down one of the most memorable Oscars gowns.
🤍
Agh Kate I AM LIVING with this series! So insightful. Thank you! 🎇

Yas!! I was hoping Dior would pop up. Love “Hello Fashion”. You’re SO articulate and respectfully reflective about fashion history. Reminds me of all the reasons I fell in love with fashion in the first place
Thank you!
Amazing! Thank you for taking us through all of the many changes that this house had gone through. Always beautiful, always elegant. I wish I could see this exhibit in person, but this was the next best thing.
Hey Kate and The Slowdown team, just wanted to thanks for creating and producing some fantastic content for youtube. I would like to see more about the dresses that celebrities wore to different events and what was your inspiration for the dresses. Also, a bit more about the history of fashion and interviewing the designers. Thank you for the video!

Thanks for another awesome episode with such rich information! If I may suggest, I would love to see an episode about Alexander McQueen one day
i love history in general and i have enjoyed listening to your storytelling of several designers for the last several videos but especially this one on Dior. Looking at some of the current fashion makes me realize that they came from the older, classic designs with a twist to make them more modern... Galliano is one of my favorites... You look very chic and an articulate story teller....Thank you for sharing the fashion history!
Another great one. FIT is another great place for these kind of exhibits.

I saw this exhibition first in Paris and then again when it came to London. This is making me want to book a trip to Brooklyn to see it a third time. Each exhibition had slightly different exhibits, making it special and unique to that city. Jadior thank you for the lovely video 😘
What an amazing exhibition! Thank you Kate for sharing Christian Dior's rich legacy and the impressive collection of the House of Dior in Brooklyn. I sure hope it will be a travelling exhibition. I like your curated tour especially at the toile room, the "white heaven". Its amazing how the toile of couture pieces are archived.
🤍
Already anticipating next week's video. These history lessons have elevated my love for fashion to another level
❤️
One thing that i like about Dior is how how they choose Anya Taylor-Joy as the ambassador. She suits the brand well. Love her looks for Dior too. I hope you talk about her, in the future.
This content was very influential. And your style is fabulous.🔥
Thanks!
This series is great and a public service.
BEST CHANNEL on youtube
I love Hello Fashion- thank you Kate for quality content - next level storytelling- big fan from 🇨🇦 . Dior is stunningly beautiful. I would love to see Oscar de la Renta.
Bravo once again. So much information in such a short film… But so easy to digest. Loved it. Very inspiring. Since finding your channel the other week, I’ve been visiting various women’s Mayfair designer stores to view collections and study the new pieces on display. It’s something I used to do regularly, but slipped out of the habit. So thank you.
🤍

Hands down Bill Gaytten's brief period at Dior was simply magical, I still fall in love with his Haute Couture Spring Summer 2012 collection to this day as a young woman. Wish his name was mentioned, I don't know the behind the brand politics of what transpired but he deserves recognition:) Keep up the great work Kate, your passion always shines through!
