those old time models, the way they presenting the dresses was so unique, like, kinda dancing? if modern day models do that, would be quite a show. peculiar but fresh rather than they just vigorously walk straight.

I think part of the reason the New Look was so popular was because it didn't stray too far from the more menswear look of the 1940's. Yes, hourglass shapes are considered feminine, but the New Look is very straight and angular. Bullet bras are very triangular. So Dior made a New Look that didn't stray too far from it's past decade which made it easier for people to adopt.

I enjoyed this, with one critique: Dior didn't create a silhouette: the "New Look" was new and fresh for people at the time, but it was clearly Neo-Victorian in aesthetic, a callback to the 1850's. It's probably no surprise that it took off in the US in the 1950's, when the social roles for women were so parallel those of the previous century: 1850's "distaff side" was 1950's "homemaker"; 1850's "angel of the hearth/home" was 1950's "domestic goddess"; and both eras punished women for being sexual while also expecting them to bear children. In terms of visual symbology, the corseted/girdled waist indicates being reduced or tightly controlled (even self-controlled, not always oppressed); the huge skirt both hides and calls attention to the woman's reproductive area; and the downward-sloping shoulders suggest weakness, yielding, or passivity. I love the New Look, and always feel smashing in a dress with nipped waist and full skirt, but I can enjoy it and also know where it comes from and why it recurs in Western fashion whenever the social pressure is on for women to be more decorative than active. The luxury which Dior and his customers were reaching for was the opposite of wartime privation, and by extension the opposite of women's wartime responsibility to be useful and competent.

When you think about it, Europe was completely in shambles at the time the New Look dropped. Like every city had just acres of bombed out buildings. In some places the rubble stuck around for decades (In London, they were still rebuilding from the Blitz into the 1960s). People didn't have enough to eat and disease (like the TB that Dior caught) was rampant. To top it off, the horrors of the Holocaust and the trials of Nazis were being broadcast for the first time. Oh and also fear of atomic war that might end life on Earth at any moment was brand new as well. That is the context for the New Look and it's kind of staggeringly and willfully tone deaf and yet it's so incredibly beautiful as well. The structural/sculptural quality of it made it walking art. I'm obsessed with classic film and some of my favorite film makers, Powell and Pressburger, made the movie The Red Shoes in this same context, filming in the South of France, and turned out one of the most egregiously beautiful movies ever made. It's almost like people were thirsting for beauty and luxury after so much deprivation and destruction.

Brilliant! FINISH your very en pointe discussion of the history of Dior! So important to know! (ps my mom was a mannequin at chez Balmain when it began, not long after it started. But she never mentioned that Balmain wanted Dior for the two of them to go into business together! Live and learn!)

It's "Haute Mode" not Haute le Mode, which makes no sense in French. You should have checked it before you started your channel. You could say l'Haute Mode, however. You should also learn how to pronounce la rue Montaigne.
It looks like you know zero French.

Interesting video, but the (very sparsely edited) auto-generated captions are unfortunately a very hard to follow disaster. If I did not have the ability to mostly hear the narration, this video would be incredibly confusing.
I'd love to offer to fix them, through community captioning, because this seems like an interesting video with good information. But Google apparently decided they weren't worth it. So unfortunately there's nothing I can do except bring it to the attention of the creators.
