Title "Delta V" is meant to be read as "delta v" as in "Δv", what represents "change in velocity" in physics. Effect of what we see at Neo (Maneo). His ship goes from very high speed to almost zero. Ship was stopped by The Ring, but everything inside keeps its momentum (tends to keep going at same speed) - Newton's Law of Inertia (1st law).

It reminds me of the saying: "Falling doesn't kill you. It's the sudden stop at the end that does."
Maneo got a pretty brutal reminder of Newton's 1st and 2nd Laws of Motion here.

Delta v kinda has a double meaning here, the first is as you described. The other is that it is a term in rocket science to denote how "far" a rocket can go because how you get to places in space is all about changing your orbit and changing your orbit involves changing your velocity. Its just "far" is in quotes because there isn't a strict ratio between delta-v and miles traveled, because 1) speeds are different in different parts of orbits, and the planets move, so sometimes the orbits line up well, and sometimes they don't, requiring more fuel to get there. So saying a rocket has 10,000 m/s is kinda like saying a car with a full tank of gas has 400 miles.
It's just interesting because any players of KSP are probably more likely thinking of this version, so seeing a very different version of change of velocity at the end is quite a surprise! (it was for me anyways!)

Good catch. Alex and Bobby were able to converse in real time because they are in close proximity. Bobby is aboard the MCRN Xuesen, which you can see glimpses of while they chat. The Xuesen is on its way to the ring as well. Nobody wants to be left out, so everybody, including Mars, is sending someone.

Re: choking/asphyxiation, it depends on the placement of their hand. If their airway is restricted, they can remain conscious for a while just as you could if you held your breath. However, if bloodflow to the brain is restricted, then they can pass out in just a few seconds. So for choking air it'd be the front of the throat as Ashford did, but a blood choke would be on the side where the carotid artery is. The easiest way to do a blood choke is from behind, a rear naked choke in Brazilian jiu jitsu.

A few seconds 5 to 20 for a sleeper hold. Possibly a lot longer for choke hold. Sleeper hold is meant to incapasate, while a choke is, usually, meant for more, but not always.

The new guy with the scar is Ashford. He is someone, as he admitted in this episode, who has often acted without civilised restraint. I got the feeling right from the start that he feels this way has failed Belters and he now wants something better and different for his people. He wants a social enlightenment of the Belter culture.
Maneo, the Belter slingshoter, demonstrated how rapid deceleration causes the human body to lose structural integrity which is current physics. It is related to the title of the episode, as Delta V is the maximum change in velocity that a rocket propelled device can achieve, which is a change that is not necessarily safe for the human occupants.
The spoiler was that Thomas Jane's name appeared in the opening credits.

@@Biomirth EXACTLY. This is horrible and an unnecessary warning. Folks really have to learn to let folks go through this adventure the SAME way they did....NOT KNOWING! It's one thing to go over things in the past that have no spoiling but warning Reactors is just such an unnecessary and almost egotistical (look at what I know and you don't) move. Even worse is I swear this is the SAME GUY who spoiled a major plot for a Reactor over on their Patreon in his need make sure everyone knows that he knows something they don't. Sure, there may be some 'oh I am an expert, let me chip in' ego as well, but it isn't always at least consciously just thoughtless. Anyways, glad I'm not the only one that tries to speak out against it. Sometimes the reaction is "Oh what? Regarding the accent, I think it's more a conscious thing to speak like an inner when she's around inners. It's called code-switching: using less black slang around your white friends etc. I've also heard the term used to refer to when bilingual people switch languages mid-sentence
[Edit] Oh and the slingshotter, imagine a fast car suddenly coming to a stop and you feel yourself being pulled forward. That what happened to that guy multiplied by about a million

Speaking only for myself, code switching is so automatic and unconscious that I don't even notice it unless somebody else comments on it. If I'm doing it consciously then it's not "code switching", it's just speaking with a different accent.

Poor Maneo! That's what sudden deceleration does to you. Gotta love those covers of some classic tunes in Belter Creole. Miwa Highway Star!
David Strathcairn as Ashford is iconic, and one of the rare cases of an adaption that greatly improves on the book original.
It's good to see Drummer making her own path, and Naomi reconnecting with her roots.
We're seeing the OPA making their first awkward steps into being a Government rather than an insurgency and political movement.
I think Monica and her cameraman both sense there's some juicy secrets to be had from Amos, and are trying to get them out if him through manipulation.
The Protomolecule is really good at taking things apart and using them as parts - it needed a pilot part, so it used Julie Mao.

  • @Dendood
    @Dendood 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

No spoilers. Just information already provided in viewed episodes: It is extremely understated but the Protomolecule is far more expansive in it's nature than we are led to believe. Dresden said it would break all the rules of physics and that evidently includes time. We have been interpreting Julie's visions of Miller and Miller's visions of Julie as hallucinations, but there's way more concrete reality going on than simple visions. The most important clue --worth a re-watch, is from Season 2, episode 1 in the conversation Miller has with Naomi. He recounts to her the very conversation he will eventually have with Protomolecule Julie in Episode 4. That's way beyond hallucination.

Warning: contains math. Disclaimer: I’ve not read the books; info there may contradict any or all of this. Others have commented on the meaning of delta V and about the inertia. I once got bored and did some really (really) rough calculations on what the belter experienced. The Voyager spacecraft, which basically slingshot through the solar system, are currently moving at about 16 km/sec, or about 30,000 mph. Let’s say the slingshot pilot was doing half that speed, that the ring slowed his ship my 90% (to 1500 mph), and that the total time taken to reduce the ship’s speed was 1 second (I think those numbers are generous; it looked like the deceleration time was less than that). Do the math, and you get 600G’s of force. At 600G’s, each ounce of blood was moving with over 35 lbs of force, and (according to google) human skin can withstand about 6 lbs of force per square inch. If bigger numbers are easier to take in (they are for me), each gallon of blood in his body was moving over 4 /tons/ of force. If those numbers are even remotely correct, I’d say the depiction was, if anything, not violent enough. :)

The captain of the Behemoth that Drummer clashes with is called Klaes Ashford. And his talk, like a lot of Belters, is just pure candy to my ears. There's something about the Belter diction that just really, really works for me. (Whether they're talking in the Belter creole or not, though especially the creole.)
The title is pronounced "delta-vee", and it's from physics and means change in velocity (velocity meaning both speed and direction). Delta-vee is also used as a term to describe a spacecraft's fuel storage - a given ship has a certain level of delta-vee stored up in its fuel and reaction mass, which means the sum total of all velocity changes it can make before it's empty and will continue drifting under its latest course.
Also - interesting that you'd speculate about the connection between Holden's Miller hallucination and the protomolecule bit on the Roci.

The scene very clearly show the ship moving through The Ring, and once inside its boundary, still moving albeit very slowly.
And now we viewer can understand why Miller wore the hat given to him by Semitimbi, and why the story showed Miller leaving it on Ceres before he caught that passenger ship to Eros. Holden had never seen Miller wearing that hat, making it highly improbable he would hallicinate about that version of Miller, and leaving only one plausible explanation. Miller's hat was something that never seemed to fit with the story,.Now we know it had its place.
