  • The 2023 Honda CR-V EX-L ($43,390 in Canada, $35,260 in the US + destination) has been completely redesigned . It’s powered by a 1.5 litre turbo charged engine that puts out 190 horsepower. Paired with a CVT, only, it represents an easy, all-wheel drive practical purchase. Although it does have some pretty tough competition in this segment. Thomas and James spend some time with it and dive into what it’s all about. We hope you enjoy the episode. Subscribe!!

      @@carllos25 the point isn't about power and speed. It's about responsiveness which can be downright dangerous when trying to make a turn and not cut someone off or merging on the highway. I don't want massive power from my car, but I want instant response from the engine when I press the gas pedal. The lag in the response gives me no power up front and then too much power up top, it's like a rubberband effect which then necessitates me to brake to slow down. I experienced this in the Civic (turbo) already and I imagine it's even worse in this car.

    We bought the 2019 EX-L model in April of 2020, for a huge discount when dealers didn't know what to do with their inventory. I don't really understand the commentary about the handling, balance, etc. of that gen - it is the most boring, uninspired, yet quiet, comfortable, and fine handling CUV. Absolutely perfect for the role of a basic, spacious family car that will go on driving forever. We got it specifically because we don't want to put miles on our nice car, and couldn't be happier.

    CVT has infinite ratios, but not infinite range of ratios, they can actually be pretty limited in range to protect the weak steel belt that is utilized. So still geared with efficiency in mind. And imagine this with 4 people, all their stuff on a 90+F degree day with all the turbo lag.

    • @jeffer1101
      @jeffer1101 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      That AND you need to keep in mind the power of the engine. Even if there was a very tall ratio available to simulate "lower gears", HP is simply a measure of an amount of work over a period of time. This is why a more powerful engine is "faster". Also, the Toyota hybrid systems don't use a belt, they use a planetary gear set, so that is also another reason why their system is much better than any belt system (which every other CVT system uses).

      Add that to the fact that honda's 1.5t doesn't have what I like to call "immediate power".
      Basically, off idle, it is completely gutless. You have to rev it out to 3-4k to begin to get power.
      Couple that with a (relatively) heavy vehicle, and you end up with the "floor it delay" they found.

    • @miker6472
      @miker6472 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Correct. I think the issue is that Honda tuned the throttle and trans to fuel economy at the expense of everything else. The CVT should have grabbed the lowest ratio possible much faster than a normal geared transmission in their full throttle scenario but it didn’t. To me that says Honda programmed in delay for normal people and even with a “sport” transmission mode didn’t give people a way to ask for more immediate acceleration. I think Honda is playing more games than they need to in order to hit FE targets, should’ve made the hybrid more accessible and called it a day.

    • @jeffer1101
      @jeffer1101 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@miker6472 Possible, but it's still a large vehicle for a small 1.5L engine to move around. Not a big deal for casual driving, but if you are going to put your foot into, it's not going to be that fast. I think it has more to do with that than anything about the CVT's programming.

  • @jasonsong86
    @jasonsong86 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The problem with CVT is not that it doesn't have unlimited ratios. It does. However, the lowest ratio is pretty high due to being able to handle certain amount of torque so they had to make the pulleys bigger to have enough surface area to handle the torque. Due to size limitations, the lowest ratio is like a normal automatic in 2nd gear so the initial acceleration is pretty slow.

  • @2WheelsAs1
    @2WheelsAs1 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You don't "stomp" on it at a stop, it won't dump all the power on the CVT. Progressive throttle application works best. It can be relatively quick application, but not all at once.

    It's fine for what it is - a big car that's easy on gas so it would be slow. It took the family with baby stuff, and the trunk being filled to the top, and still managed ~ 7 litres/100km.
    It could use more sound proofing but that would mean extra weight and even slower + worse fuel economy I guess.

    I tried the Honda CRV EX waiting on the EXLs to come in to the dealership. I liked it very much. It is not a race car but had enough pep for me. It handles very well and is a comfortable ride. The CRV has the Honda DNA like my 2007 Accord. The 2023 Honda CRVs are better cars than the new Accords which were a huge disappointment.

    Actually the transmission "test" you do at 4:56 ish, try that with a DSG and see how laggy a transmission can be. Most transmissions are really bad in the let-off-the-throttle-to-coast-only-to-get-back-on-it maneuver, Toyota CVTs are decent responsive in this I've found.

    I've owned this CRV for 6 months. It drives better now than when I took it off the lot. Great vehicle. It's not bought to gun around town like teenagers. If you can't get past the testoserone stuff then you're missing the complete point of having one.

    • @davidcox2197
      @davidcox2197 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think the Rav4 is a leader now in the industry for this size car. You can still get a normal auto trans instead of a CVT cheapie trans, and you can get a non aspirated engine as well which is reliable. We quit buying CRV's our last is the 2014 with normal trans and non aspirated engine. Our next jump will be to either a Rav4 or a XC40 Volvo. No more Honda for us.

    Honda hrv at least in the states is basically a AWD civic. Also, the 20/22 crv is just as good as this one imo. Same engine and trans minus the fake shifts.

    I have an 02 CRV with 330K miles on it that i drive 120 miles daily to work. K24 is bullet proof.. I have always been skeptical of the newer ones with the CVT trans. Not sure why they just didn't do a tuned down version of the 2.0T w/ the 10 SPD in an AWD format.

    This cvt is the reason I didn't buy the civic. To get a manual transmission you had to get the hatchback for extra money. That extra money put the cost pretty close to a 2023 Camry SE with an eight speed transmission. My new Camry SE is white.

    There isn’t a better example of the word “Car” than a Honda CRV. It has enough space for a family, looks good, has enough power, has all the tech for 2023 and isn’t overly expensive and complicated. It’s just a car for normal people to drive from point a to point b and maybe go on vacation in between. I’m very glad Honda has come out with a CRV that actually looks good for once.

    Regarding the CVT I'd love to see some investigation done with a throttle controller to see if it's torque-lock up programming or a really damped throttle response to save fuel and avoid overheating the CR-V in city traffic.

    Wonder if Honda fixed the damn heater. I had a 2019 that the heater blew cold air when it went below 0 °F (-17 °C). I could watch the temp gauge go down to C when driving and it never came back up. Dealership told me that's been a recurring problem for other customers and urged me to drive slower, turn the blower down, and rely on heated seats. Really dangerous when its that cold and the windshield frosts up.

    It may be different calibration, but with a 2014 forester with over 80k flooring the cat doesn't do anything. Rolling from 1/4 throttle to 1/2 throttle seems to get better acceleration.
