I always absolutely loved how the ghosts looked in this game, generally other worldly and eerie. I wish Dark Moon and 3 carried the effect more.
You honestly put more effort into these videos then most of the channels with millions of subscribers. You are such an inspiration!

I knew something was up with the ghost effects, it really looks so otherworldly its crazy.
Don’t mind me while I watch this for the 10th time, bopping to the music
I suppose the reason we associate projections of light and things that are almost, but not quite there with ghosts is because that's what we imagine ghosts as, people who aren't quite there, people who appear almost entirely correctly, but are just appearances of light with varying levels of influence on the physical world depending on who you ask.
Anyway, speculation aside, great video. I really liked this quality work.

Dude the music in this is incredible, the transition between the Hallway theme and the Haunted Mansion Ballroom theme, and the layering of the Hallway theme back on top of the Ballroom theme is incredible.

Nice video. I learned things that you explained clearly, you did nice animations (like the reference to the second game you did), and it’s actually formatted as 4:3, instead of being 4:3 being put as a 16:9.

I love channels like yours or scruffy's that look into how games do things. Scruffy typically focuses on music,sound effects and dynamics. I’m a 3D artist, and I’ve always been curious as to how these effects worked. Never would have guessed that it was done through a simple blend mode. Cool stuff! :D
Actually very chuffed with myself for guessing how they did the effect before you revealed it (at least the "seperately rendered and superimposed" part). I took a look at it, and thought "huh, that kinda feels like something greenscreened onto film".
I feel like that general old horror-movie vibe was more likely the direct influence on the devs. I even think that could explain why the ghost's render pass is at half resolution, to give the feeling of something that doesn't exist in the shot being inserted jarringly into it.
Anyway, wow! great video! A lot of nice, tasteful editing to demonstrate what you're talking about. I'll be subbed for if you ever return!

What an amazing and underrated channel!! So interesting to see how ghosts are done in Luigi's Mansion, I just assumed they were a transparent model but this makes MUCH more sense and indeed explains how they look so.. otherwordly. I can almost certainly tell ghosts in the sequel's are just transparent models though, which is a shame.
Oh yeah! I feel like the ghosts in Luigi’s Mansion 3 might use a similar technique, at least when they’re not all glowey. But the ones in Dark Moon and the 3ds remake of 1 are just transparent, probably because of the 3ds’s limited capabilities.
