I am so glad I found this video. My 2019 Canyon has 137,000 miles from a lot of traveling. It developed a shudder that hit around 1800-2200 rpm. Local transmission shop tried to get me to do a rebuild for $5500. Then I found this. Took it to the dealer for the complete flush and the shudder is gone. They also told me that there is no reason for a rebuild at this time. I was almost ripped off. Thank you for this info!!
I just realized im very late to the party here but something you didn’t mention is that the transmission controller needs to be reset and then driven a couple hundred miles to properly affect the fix. Disconnecting the battery will reset the transmission controller and driving it 200 miles gives the transmission time to “learn” how to shift correctly and remain stable at those junctions between up and down shifts, and overdrive torque converter lock.
Nothing has changed after three flushes. The battery has been disconnected many times I’m broke from all the shops saying it’s all good now but it’s still exact same shaking. Only difference was I spent 2000$
My 2018 Silverado with the 5.3L V8 and the 8-speed transmission has been shuddering ever since I bought it used earlier this year. I called my mechanic and he has worked on several of these torque converter issues with GM transmissions. He says the best, and only way to fix it permanently is to have the torque converter replaced and the transmission flushed, then add fresh transmission fluid. I am having this done right now. I'm so glad I bought the extended warranty when I bought the truck!
You might be right. I bought it used and came with recipes for transmission fluid change 15,000 miles ago. I’ll have it replaced with Amsoil full synthetic
Yea we had a Colorado GM flush done 1 year ago and back to shuttering. Dealer wants 4500 to change torque converter or the whole tranny for 9500. GM really needs to own up to the millions of upset customers. Ford for now on
Just bought a 2018 Colorado Z71 with 45k miles. Sure enough during the 45 minute drive home from the dealership on the high way going 50-80 mph, I noticed the shudder, it was light at first and gradually got more aggressive. Terrible feeling after just dropping $6k down on it. It came with a 6 month warranty so I'll be taking it to get the flush done. UPDATE: It's been about 1 year since I made this post, the dealer initially only did a flush and it still shuddered. Then they replaced the torque converter and it's been fine ever since, currently at 62,144 miles.
Good call! If it continues after that in the slightest, my suggestion would be to see if they'll replace the torque converter and replace GM spec transmission fluid with the mobil 1 fluid.
According to their technicial service bulletin TSB # 18-NA-355, flushing and replacing with Mobil 1 is their standard fix for the issue now. You shouldn’t have to ask specifically for them to use Mobil 1 but you should for sure at least ask which fluid they will use just for peace of mind.

Bought my 2019 Canyon Denali new with 23 miles on it in November 2018. At 300 miles I started noticing the shutter. Took it back to the dealership, described the issue and they immediately knew what it was. A complete flush and refill with the new Mobil 1 trans fluid and no more shutter. 6895 miles later with fingers crossed. I love my truck.
My 2019 8 speed developed the "Shutter" at 59870 miles. I attempted to get GM to perform the Flush under warranty and took it in. Service told me it was much worse and they completely rebuild the Transmission from valve body, clutch packs to torque converter. Work and part delays took 4 months, so I racked up 7500 miles on their loaners. I was given a 24 month 24K miles warranty on the work. I'm about 5K miles in, other than the notable GM hard 1st shift (knock wood), so far so good.
I’m at 100,000 and started so the warranty is taking care of the Valve body and the new torque converter from gmc and I’m paying only for the fluids and filter. I’m speaking positivity and this problem will be resolved!
@@nuperancher3115I’m having my shudder problem fixed now on a 2019 Silverado with 51000 miles and was told that Ally extended warranty would not cover it and costs me $1200
I have a 2018 camaro that had this issue. i took it to Chevy, and they did 3 full flushes, and it's been running smooth ever since then. Based on the research i did, apparently, the OEM transmission fluid Chevy used out of the factory was not formulated properly and was pulling moisture out of the air. This explained why doing a full flush using their machine that can pull everything out fully works so well.
@@freedomfamilyautogroupI’m looking at a used 2018 Camaro RS with 39k. Was a trade, took awhile to hear its availability. Just heard it went through GM inspection and needed torque converter replaced, this is a sign to keep looking. What are your thoughts?
I have a 2018 Colorado 2wd with 108k miles on it. I've been lucky to never have the transmission shudder throughout its life. I believe I helped combat this though by doing transmissions flushes at the dealer every 30k miles throughout its life so far. Only part I have ever had go bad so far on the truck is the thermostat/temp sensor. I would definitely recommend having the dealer do the flush because of the system being able to pump all the old fluid out.
@zackemick3003 im pretty sure it is. My sign was that the temp gauge in the cluater would randomly just go up and down, and the fan would get stuck on like it was trying to cool.
My ‘19 colorado did this at ~35k. Did the GM flush and fluid replacement (under warranty thankfully), and had zero issues until ~68k. Not sure if replacing this fluid every 30k would’ve stopped this from happening, but the flush from the dealership ultimately didn’t prevent the shudder from coming back.
63000 miles this started. Took it to the dealer. Had them do the flush with a TCM update. It shifted really smooth in the beginning and was happy with what they did. The truck sits most days. Sometimes weeks at a time. I mostly just drive my car back and fourth to work. Now here I am on a road that lasted 1500 miles and it's back. And of course no warranty.
They don’t tell you anything except pay for your over payment for your double the price fluid Walmart sells five quarts in a five quart container for 22$. There dealer charges 16$ a quart. 185$ for 10 quarts. Plus 200$ to change out the fluid. 430$ each time. I’m upset with stupid people who think they deserve 200$ per hour and 100 percent markup for their cheap fluids.

2019 ,Colorado 3.6 4x4. I have the shudder issue. Gm flushed it twice and the shudder stayed. I doubt they followed the gm service bulletin though. It says get the transmission fluid temperature to 145 before draining. The transmission temperature Guage has never gone over 130 since iv owned it. Pulling trailers, I traffic in the summer etc. I think that's a lot of the problem, the fluid never gets hot enough to evaporate the moisture out. My truck has the tow package and transmission cooler. I only has 43000 miles now but during covid an accident damaged the bed side. Due to the parts shortage it was totalled by the insurance company. We found a salvage bed the exact color (white,) and swapped the bed. Even gm service can't see where it was wrecked. But the Vin voids gm warranty. I have a scan tool so I did a scan and it shows multiple misfires. No MIL light though. So iv ordered new coil packs and spark plugs. We have a 2018 terrain with an 8 speed front wheel drive transaxle. It also had a shudder. Ir also has misfire codes and no MIL. I replaced the could packs and plugs in it they fixed the misfire and shudder issue. So I'm going to do the same with rhe Colorado. If the shudder is not fixed I'll take it to a different dealership for another flush. Also I dud add a bottle of Shudder Fix and it made no difference
My 2018 Colorado developed the shudder at about 42,000 miles, which is just about the average point to happen. I was well-acquainted with the problem, so I took it to my dealer. They did the complete flush with the special machine (which all dealers were required to buy) and the shudder disappeared and has never come back. As you said, the problem appears to be the original fluid apparently absorbs too much water (which it is designed to do, just like brake fluid) and could not maintain sufficient pressure on the torque converter clutch.
I had the same problem with my 2018 GMC Canyon. On a grade it would shudder before it would shift down. I took it to a GM/Chevrolet dealer and he said " let's try the easy fix first". He put the high end trans fluid in it, same thing what the Corvettes and other sports cars use. He told me that I may have to run it for some miles before it would make a difference. I noticed a difference right away. It's been shifting smoothly ever since - probably 20,000 miles ago.
My 2018 started doing it at 56k and when I took it to the dealership they told me there was a service bulletin on the issue. They did a good clean and flush, put the right tranny fluid in it and I'm at 88k now with 0 problems.
So sorry about your troubles. It is annoying to drive a shudder ride!! Not sure of the cost at this point. Go by your favorite Chevy service department and get a quote. Be sure to switch fluid to the Mobil 1.
I had the same problem with my 2018 Colorado. It would only start shuttering when the truck warmed up. Took it back to the dealership to have it looked at. They said they didn’t feel a shutter. So started driving down the road and it happened again so I turned around and went to get some one to come with me. Started shuttering again so I asked what that was and he said that was the torque converter. The truck was still under warranty so the dealership took care of that. I’ve had this truck for 8 months and so far so good.
Today I test drove a 2017 Colorado 4x4 6cylinder with 126k miles it had the studder little vibration at highway speeds feel it in the seat. Before I went to the dealer, I was aware of the 8speed transmission problem. Sad it rode drove like a car better than the 08 impala ss I will trade in. Probably needs a flush. So, I test drove a 2020 extended cab same motor and drivetrain with 38k miles. I've read after 2019 is the gen 2 8 speed with less reported problems. The 2020 shifted smoother no studder or vibrations very nice truck. Got a 3 day hold on it seriously thinking about buying that truck. Still looking up similar vehicles to try and find the best deal. Gosh I don't remember trucks being this expensive. Spread it out over the longest note and pay it off earlier. I'm going to do more research on these 8 speeds transmissions to make an educated decision. Thanks for the video its people like you and forums that are helping me decide what type of truck to buy.
You are most welcome @rockfishgamer1408! My suggestion would be to stay away from the GM 8-Speed tranny and possibly the 10-Speed too. Thanks for posting!
Great info, thank you. I just got a 2016 Chevy colorado and noticed a shutter at about 20 mph. I'm guessing 2nd gear. It has 133 k on the transmission, and Im glad I got the extended warranty on the engine and transmission. Im guessing it hasn't had the transmission services done to the transmission.
Hey I have a 16 and it’s got 88k miles on it and it’s had problems since day 1. I done the gm flush at about 55k and nothing changed just waiting for the day it has to be towed because of a transmission problem. I’m also about an hour away from Corinth !
You might want to do another flush and have them switch to the Mobil 1 fluids. Crossroads in Corinth was helpful when we used them. That'd be my suggestion. Thanks for posting Blake!
ha, I'm taking mine into the dealer THIS MORNING for this reason and I suspect they'll want to do the flush. Cost? $1000 cdn. Glad to hear that it should fix the issue. I recently just bought the truck and I got a great deal on it so I'm not whining if I have to put $1000 into it. Nearest truck with the low miles was $10,000 more than I paid for it.
I bought a new Colorado in 2017 and within a few weeks I noticed the shutter and it was terrible. I took it back to the dealer and they hadn't heard of this issue yet, so after a little research they installed a new torque converter and for a couple weeks it seemed okay but the shutter returned just as bad as before. About that time GM finally acknowledged it was a widespread problem and started recommending the trans flush. That helped mine quite a bit but its never been perfect. The last year or so its been getting worse but not to the extent of the original shutter. To be honest I hate this transmission. I think the 2016 model had a 6 speed that rarely had any problems. I wish mine had it instead.
2018 Colorado 95Kmiles, had the shudder shortly after purchasing this past Nov. Ill be taking it to the dealer here soon I hope. One thing I have noticed myself is that if I drive in Tow/Haul mode, the shudder is quite rare. I also have noticed that if I "feather" the gas pedal it can trigger the shudder more often. Other sites I have read that a new tune on the computer can help as well, but I personally do not know if this is true or not. I am hopeful the flush will work. Thank you for the vid!
Thanks for the input, Stone! We don't have experience with performing a tuning on the computer, but that sounds like it could be helpful. Best wishes with your flush, and thanks for watching!
Bought my 2018 Colorado brand new. Developed the shudder almost immediately. Dealer replaced torque converter at 1500 miles. Only has 45,000 miles now and is starting to shift rough. Almost feels like something is slipping and occasionally shudder. Taking it back to dealer soon. We'll see.
@@freedomfamilyautogroup Took it to dealer. They flushed and filled transmission. Still under warranty. No charge. All smooth now. Recommended same in 30,000 miles. I'll probably still be driving it. I like the truck and they're not making any new ones like it.
2017 z71 diesel 4x4 125K miles. never had the shudder, but it would shift a little weird from 3rd to 4th. as rev up from 3rd to 4th as it got to the shift point it would fall back just a tad like a slip, then rev back up again and finally shift to 4th. I started using the mobile one on my fluid change (every 30k). and noticeably, that issue has lessened, also shifts are much smoother. Still has that shift issue from 3rd to 4th but its not noticeable unless I'm paying attention to it.
Good call. I will be taking mine to get it flushed. Now, My truck is a colorado 2018 Z92 with ALC package. it only has 40,000 miles. But when I go from 30 to 45 ish is when it star shuddering. I release the gas pedal and then goes back to normal. If I pass 70 miles it doesn't do it. weird, but that is what it does. Also, since I bought the truck brand new, I am the first owner, the warning signal for the 4x4 comes on for a few seconds and goes away...it does it intermittent. The service office always telling me the truck its ok, but they dont have a mechanic who can work on models with ALC.
I have 18 silverado with shudder. Did new tires, bearings, cv axle and no one could figure it out. My shudder comes and goes and only lasts a few seconds. Does that match your experience or was shutter constant? I mostly notice around 25mph
That sounds similar to our experience. However our Colorado would have an intermittent shudder at the highest gears around cruising speed vs at 25 mph. Thanks for your input!
We have a 2021 Colorado and the gm dealership refused to work on the transmission due to the mileage. We took it to several transmission shops and no one would service the transmission.
You shouldn’t have put stop leak in it. That was your first mistake. Just change the fluid. If the shudder doesn’t go away with a fluid change then you need a new torque converter. You figured it out towards the end. DON’T PUT STOP LEAK IN IT!
mine has had a very different issue. every morning when I'm driving it out of the driveway, at the first gearshift it seems to have a delay shifting. I have to keep the throttle at the same level and slowly ease off in order for it to complete the shift (in some cases entirely let off the gas) but after that it runs perfectly fine. that being said most of my morning commute is all downhill so there isn't much load on my transmission after that first shift. maybe its to do with the torque converter having enough fluid/pressure in it in order to make the first shift. I haven't had the shudder you mention at all and I just hit 120,000. now that I'm finding out about this it makes me feel like these transmissions were meant to be disposable :/
Thanks for posting @jesseludwig2450. You could let it warm up to it's normal operating temperature before making the morning drive. That might help with the first shift. Disposable? Probably intentional, yes. I call it planned obsolescence.
I have 116g on my 8 speed. Was told not to flush. I changed the fluid and it’s worse as of right now. Now it shifts poor at 1 and 2. Looks like I’m in the same boat. Was trying to save a few bucks.
there is a data PID in the transmission control module, look for torque converter clutch slip, or TCC slip, if you see it regularly jumping to ~50, replace the fluid, if you see it going to ~100 or more, its most likely the torque converter was damaged or worse. GM's service procedure for dealing with this is to exchange ~20 quarts of fluid.
I have the same transmission in my Chevy truck with 40,000 on it & the dealer has replaced the torque converter twice and pump now it’s going back in for the third time in15 months and there replacing the whole transmission!
I had a 2016 Silverado z71 off road, 5.3 v8, 6 speed transmission, had problems with it from day 1, had the computer rebooted, then a flush, then a complete rebuild, extended warranty, just after the warranty expired, it was shaking so bad that my truck was bouncing while driving, 33,000 miles on it, drove it on the weekends only, had it almost 6 years, took it and traded it for a 2022 colorado, v6, the only issue now is a " funky " shift into 2nd or 3rd gear when first driving until it's warmed up and it's fine after, I miss the size and looks of my Silverado z71 but not the issues, I love my Colorado, gloss black, redline edition, tow package with 7000 lbs towing
I have a 2021 GMC Canyon doing the shudders, I'm going to take it to get flushed too! Do you recommend the OEM transmission fluid? Thanks for the video
Just to be sure, so the dealership doesn't freak out, you brought your own transmission fluid to the dealership? And it's the brand you mentioned in your video?
Hi @tresiii20011, yes. That is correct. You might contact the service department ahead of time and let them know what you want to do. They may have this fluid on the shelf by now.
@@freedomfamilyautogroup called the local gmc dealership, they will not do the mobile one transmission oil change, so I'm going with a local transmission shop that will do the job, at half the cost, thanks so much for your information.
Thats tough to answer since different areas offer better or poorer service. We were reccomended by a quality trans rebuild shop in Northeast MS to have the Chevy dealer do it. So, I'd lean towards the Chevy dealer option first.. Hope this helps.
Michael, So Sorry you have to go through this!!! With your mileage, I'd definately recommend the dealership flush. See if you can get it swapped to the Mobil 1 Trans fluid. Hopefully that will get you back on the road trouble free.
I don’t have that vibration, but my issue is at low rpm’s it will go like it’s trying to grab that next gear but keeps slipping. It will jump to the next gear by almost stomping the pedal to the floor
@@freedomfamilyautogroup if it comes to that, I’m thinking trade in on a Jeep lol. It started this shit a month after we bought it new in 2016 and hasn’t really changed or gotten any worse. We had it to the dealership several times but they “could not replicate the issue”. Con artists.
Well they supposedly fixed the "shudder" in 2019.. So I bought a 2020 Colorado 4x4 WT.. At 6k miles it started shuddering.. The dealer did the flush and so far so good..I have 25k miles on it now...
Ok why would flushing the trans or replacing the fluid cure the problem? Would it just not come back at a later mileage? The real problem is cheap components inside the trans wouldn't you think? Probably the valve body or faulty shift sensors.
It's my understanding that GM's OEM spec fluid is a culprit @johnnys4782. Either way, treat it with multiple fluid changes at shorter intervals and you will likely extend the life of your tranny.
i just purchased a used 22 colorado z71 with 29k miles on it and immediately noticed the transmission slipping in 1st-2nd gear when i first start it up and runs/ shifts fine after that... of course it didnt happen when i test drove it but will be taking it back to dealership tomorrow.... i love this truck and dont want to get rid of it... is it worth holding on to? this is my first "big boy" purchase and of course i have a problem with it right out the gate... will the truck last if the problem is fixed this early on?
Hi @bilbojenkins5923, thanks for the question. Our opinion is that this 8-Speed transmission is the product of flawed engineering. It can be nursed along, but success seems to be an exception. If or when a company like Jasper releases a better engineered replacement, then you will have a good option around this problem. Till then, do the transmission flush and replace with a better fluid like Mobil1. If you don't want to endure this problem, then see if you can return the truck. Also, read the comments here. There are plenty of good testimonials to sift through. Hope this is helpful.
@@freedomfamilyautogroup this is heart breaking to hear. i literally just bought the truck less than a week ago, 2022 midnight black z71 30k miles on it and it didnt happen when i test drove it but within the next day or two i definitely noticed it. ive never owned anything newer than a 2005. always liked having my vehicles paid in full. finally buy a new truck and this shit happens. very disheartening. i love the truck and really want to keep it, but you think that over time it will keep getting worse?and best to part ways with it? i also looked on the manual on how to check/ change the trans fluid and it literally says "dont check or change it yourself take it to a certified dealer". have you heard of anyone keeping theirs and keeping up with fluid changes etc that it lasts? cause it shifts smoothly other than 1-2 first start of the day thanks again.
Take heart @bilbojenkins5923. Plenty of people have decided to keep theirs. You might just consider that the 8-Speed is the weak link in the chain and budget for flushes with better than OEM spec fluid. Perhaps a company like Jasper will engineer a replacement that fixes this problem in the future. For now, use your manufacturer warranty. It may cover the extra flush maintenance. You've got options and a path to keep the truck you love.
I have a chevy colorado 2017. This models up to 2020., have this issues. I did a research and I found out that in Florida was a class action lawsuit against GM because the Silverado had this issue. So I took my truck to the dealer, lucky me my truck was under warranty. When I explain to the dealer they try to deny the problem. But when they tested they found out it was the same issue for the Silverado. So they flushed the trans oil and had to reprogram the transmission. This issue should be repaired free of charge. Be what I was told this truck came out to commerce with the wrong transmission oil.
I have a 2016 Camaro it probably has the L90 transmission, car has 23,400 miles it’s been flushed twice by GM and it still shudders and sometimes it feels like it’s slipping under a hard pull.
@ took it to Chevy garage a couple days ago, they told me it was out of warranty so it would cost me 600.00 for diagnostics and flush. They looked it up and saw where it had been flushed two times before so it’s a recorded issue yet they claimed they had no records of there being any kind of issue with the 8 speed automatic transmissions, then told me it probably needed a new torque convertor, if they know nothing of any issue how did they know the next step of the troubling shooting?🙄
Okay as someone who knows barely anything about trucks. Would you say Chevy 2022 or 2023 LT trucks have issues? Anything you know from personal research? Looking to getting one with the big screen and want to make sure there is 0 flaws that have plagued forums or complaints you have seen like this.
Appreciate the question @Multimeter1. I am not certain about those year models. If it's the 8-Speed transmission, then expect these problems. Some have given the 10-Speed transmission better reviews. I think it may be too soon to know for sure about it's long term reliability. Hope this helps!
Well, our own experience with a GM 8-Speed was painfull and expensive. The feedback and testimony here from people confirms what we hear from other mechanics. It's a transmission to avoid if you can.
There's a 2016 Colorado Z71 near me with 45kish miles for sale at a great price. Would LOVE to buy this truck but man am I scared to death of the build quality. Just can't do it. What a shame.
I have a 16 Z71 with 6 speed transmission. No issues since new.Now at 76 and some change on the odometer, still running like a champ. To wake up the truck, like being sluggish, I recommend Trifecta for a tune, you won't regret it.
Your 6-Speed is engineered better than the 8-Speed tranny @madhatter5331. Jasper makes a reman for the 6-Speed but requires the Mobil 1 fluid vs OEM spec to stay in warranty. Our advice for those who want this type of GM truck... find one with the 6-Speed.
Wow, $5-600 for a trans flush and synthetic fluid change! That is crazy! Any cheaper methods out there? Is the GM flush machine something that regular mechanic shops don’t have?
I hope you didn't too @skeymoson. Fortunately, there are plenty of testimonials here to learn from and form your own informed response to this issue. Thanks for posting!
My 2017 Colorado is doing this and got a price today. My Chevy dealer wants $500.00 for the recommended flush. I'm retired and that seems really high for a flush. Any thoughts?
Hello @blitz4Jesus. Are they including the fluids we reccomend in this Video or are you buying them separately? It's been awhile, but I believe we came pretty close to that figure for the entire project.
My 08 Colorado does this between 45mph going to 50mph can someone please let me know if they have any knowledge on this? The tires are bigger than the stock ones
Just got a 2020 Silverado 8 speed 4x4 with 61k miles and 1 previous owner. After putting 2k miles on it myself, it’s starting to develop this shudder problem. No warranty. Do you think if I’m catching it early, I could just do a fluid change or am I too late once I notice even a slight shudder?
Good question @user-bj8qp4fg6m. I think you have a better chance of extending the life of this transmission by scheduling regular flushes, and changing to the better fluid... maybe every 25k miles.
@@freedomfamilyautogroup ok thanks, but in the 2020 doesn’t it already have the better fluid OEM? Also, I’ve heard mixed reviews on flushes, as they have potential to move around varnish to smaller parts of the transmission and cause issues. Thoughts on that? Thanks
@user-bj8qp4fg6m good questions! It may have improved, but I am not aware of it. At the moment, I am avoiding buying vehicles with this 8 & 10 speed transmission when possible. Can you confirm that the OEM. Fluid has been reformulated 20 and beyond. That would be helpful to know! Re. flushes, I have only become a fan of this procedure for this issue... 6,8,&10 speeds. Older than that, flushes seemed to result in transmission problems. So, no. I wouldn't recommend a flush in those circumstances. Thanks much for the feedback!
@@freedomfamilyautogroup thank you for the reply. I also have been hearing similar thoughts that flushes on the 8 speeds aren’t as “dangerous” so long as it doesn’t have really high mileage. At 62k hopefully a flush will help and not hurt. One more quick question. Local dealers are giving me different opinions on fluid. One is saying they would never use Mobil 1 HP or anything aftermarket. Others are saying they only use it. I cannot confirm what’s in my transmission is reformulated fluid. It’s whatever they put in the 2020 Silverado RST 8 speed. What are your thoughts on using different fluid than what came from the factory? Sorry for long comment
@user-bj8qp4fg6m appreciate that. Our Colorado had high miles. The flush was our only remedy short of a rebuild. It's my understanding that the GM spec fluid is a part of the cause for the torque converter failure. We bought a Jasper 6-Speed for a work truck and they required it to be filled with Mobil 1... not the OEM spec. I believe GM's fluid is a part of the problem for their 6, 8, and 10 speed tranny's
I have a 2018 with 150 km on it now, The transmission started doing that shuddering. The cost is expensive and chevy should be paying for it. Hot flush 400$ The new transmission fluid 900$ Chevy dealership shop rate 180$ hr I bought this truck brand new from dealer. If this continues to be an ongoing problem, I will drop it back off at the dealer and will not make another payment.
Hi Shelby, these estimates seem high. Here's a link to the supplies we used on our Amazon store, currently 6 quarts of transmission fluid costs around $111. www.amazon.com/shop/hopfammedia/list/24J1T03NLOAQH?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_aipsflist_aipsfhopfammedia_MGTB7MK4BRX877XNR2KT So, it may be good to provide your own fluid to replace after the flush. I have 18 silverado with shudder. Did new tires, bearings, cv axle and no one could figure it out. My shudder comes and goes and only lasts a few seconds. Does that match your experience or was shutter constant? I mostly notice around 25mph
I had a trusted GM dealership flush my 2020 RST. Instead of the shudder beginning at the end of my daily 40 mile drive, it shudders during the beginning 20 miles then goes away. It shudders on the way home then goes away. I spent 50k on this machine. Never had such a problem on a GM vehicle.
I’m confused about this. All the old 4/4 jeeps and Chevy trucks have the same shutter. I thought it was normal for a four wheel drive vehicle?? It’s all them gears on the transfer case. And the low gears on the front end and rear
I’ll change the transmission fluid tomorrow and get the results. I don’t remember it shuttering when I bought it. I already changed all the fluids in everything else
I change the filter and fluid. It started again yesterday after 11,000 miles. I’ll change it again tomorrow. The original owner didn’t do any maintenance on the zr2. Bought it with 89,000 miles
@@freedomfamilyautogroup Yes, our local Chevy dealer did the flush with the upgraded fluid. Worked perfectly until last week. As I mentioned I just turned 17,000 total miles and rough guess, it's been less than 4,000 since the flush (having trouble finding my receipt). The truck is a 2020 and under warranty as I bought it Nov 2020 and with the very low mileage. Appointment is Friday AM, I'll try to report back.
The torque converter is shaking the truck. Probably going to make the engine blow up with the transmission. It can’t be good for everything to shake uncontrollably every time I drive
All a band aid. The problem is the TCC is allowed to slip. The programming allows it to slip and engages is in early gears. Program the allowed slip to zero not 20 (40 in dod). All band aid bs. Remove the slip, prevent the shudder.
@@freedomfamilyautogroup that’s what the root of the problem is. It’s programmed to slip. Dealers and transmission shops opinions on tcm ecm programming mean nothing to me if they don’t know about allowed slip tables.
@@freedomfamilyautogroup of course they would say you need to keep servicing it. This would actually fix it. They get rich of gm late model transmissions.
I bought my 2019 Canyon a short time ago and at 60k the shudder started. After looking around the internet I thought I'd give a product a try called "Lubegard Instant Shudder Fix". I used it and at around 150 miles later the shudder was better, but still there to some degree. I contacted Lubegard tech support and they told me that if their product didn't correct the issue, then the Torque Converter was bad and changing the fluid would not correct the problem. Any thoughts on this?
I don't know about Lubegard. It sounds like they have some experience on the topic. Our high mileage Colorado shudder was "fixed" via the flush method while we owned it at the lot. New torque converter or not, my thoughts are that you will keep this problem unless you switch to the Mobil 1 fluid.
Wow, $5-600 for a trans flush and synthetic fluid change! That is crazy! Any cheaper route out there? Is the GM flush machine something that regular mechanic shops don't have or something? What is the difference in their methods?
I just bought a 2018 from the kia dealership on maui...i guess it was a trade in...i saw it on the lot and i was going in to trade in my leased kia for a new one but when i saw that beautiful truck i wanted it bad. Test drive didnt get up to enough speed to feel the shudder yet but when i drove it off the lot i felt it halfway home and my heart sank. What i want to know is am i ruining it by driving it with the shudder? Is it dangerous to drive? Is anything going to lock up or whatever and possibly hurt me? Cuz i drive the road to hana everyday and i cant have things like that happen on that road it would be instant death.
High Anna, great questions! Thanks for posting them here. There are several owner posts telling of their experience with this problem. Read each one for more information and context. My own thoughts are that the transmissions torque converters wear out prematurely. You are left with repairing or replacing to the same flawed design from the manufacturer. It is an annoying problem. Many ignore it and drive on. Eventually, the transmission will stop shifting properly. If a vendor like Jasper releases a reman option that is built better than the OEM, then you will have a path forward to repair and keep the truck you love reliably on the road. This is your best option when available. Hope this helps!
My GMC Canyon has done this ever since 10 thousand miles . Fought with the dealer they replaced the converter and it was better for around a year or 10 thousand miles. Right back to the same old problem. Can’t wait to dump this overpriced junk.
I am very sorry to hear of your troubles @Pitchithard. Be careful, GM is not the only manufacturer with this form of "planned obsolescence" these days. My guess is that the OEM spec fluid had a part in the demise of your 2nd torque converter. Next time, flush or replacement, our advice is to switch to the Mobil 1 fluid. On another note, we just fired up our X.com account. If you use that, you can find us at @HopFamMedia. Thanks for posting!
I had a 2018 canyon it started vibrating at 25000 miles took it to dealership where I bought it and they said nothing was wrong with it I took it to another dealership that had been fixing the problem but they said being I didn’t buy it from them they were not going to fix it I called General Motors they said they would get back with me in two days two weeks later General Motors called me back and said are you having trouble with your new canyon I said no I fixed it myself they said how did you fix it your self I said I’m driving a new Toyota I don’t have to drive your junk truck

@@freedomfamilyautogroup I just learned about the product 2 weeks ago after having the shudder for at least 5000 miles. I put it in the transmission dipstick tube last week and then drove it for 30 miles on the flat and up hills. No shudder. I then drove it 130 miles another day. Smooth. I have a company vehicle I drive during the week so I wont be giving the Buick a long term test for some time. I saw where a limo service driver had over 30000 miles of shudder free driving before he started noticing a shudder again. Lubegard's has a video on youtube that explains the reason why it works and its limitations.
Great video, straight to the point, no bs.
Thank you @JeanSantana000! Appreciate the post.
Very Glad it Helped !!!
has it come back ?

The GM flush with new fluid helped get rid of my shudder too! got it done around 45k miles. At 81k now around 3 yrs later without any new issues.
Appreciate the feedback! Thanks for posting @Xx34TxITxX.
How much u pay?
I just realized im very late to the party here but something you didn’t mention is that the transmission controller needs to be reset and then driven a couple hundred miles to properly affect the fix. Disconnecting the battery will reset the transmission controller and driving it 200 miles gives the transmission time to “learn” how to shift correctly and remain stable at those junctions between up and down shifts, and overdrive torque converter lock.
That's great feedback @Co-boticist0091. Not too late! Thanks for posting.
About how long should the battery be disconnected? Several minutes?
Yes, I think so.
Nothing has changed after three flushes. The battery has been disconnected many times I’m broke from all the shops saying it’s all good now but it’s still exact same shaking. Only difference was I spent 2000$
do you reset after the flush?
My 2018 Silverado with the 5.3L V8 and the 8-speed transmission has been shuddering ever since I bought it used earlier this year. I called my mechanic and he has worked on several of these torque converter issues with GM transmissions. He says the best, and only way to fix it permanently is to have the torque converter replaced and the transmission flushed, then add fresh transmission fluid. I am having this done right now. I'm so glad I bought the extended warranty when I bought the truck!
Good to know @redleg1971. I caution against using the OEM spec fluid. This seems to be the culprit.
Ford for now on
Be wary of the Ford 10 Speed Tranny too...

You shouldn’t have to ask specifically for them to use Mobil 1 but you should for sure at least ask which fluid they will use just for peace of mind.
that year with those miles for $6K ??? that was a steal! even if you have to replace the trans.

Good feedback, thanks Jack!
More specific its the Mobil 1 LV atf HP fluid
They did the same to mine and a year later bam but not as often.

Appreciate that feedback Alex. Quick question: what fluid is being put into the transmission after each flush... OEM Spec or Mobil1?
@@freedomfamilyautogroup pretty sure it was Mobil 1
I also had a thermostat/temp sensor go bad. I wonder if this is a common problem.
@zackemick3003 im pretty sure it is. My sign was that the temp gauge in the cluater would randomly just go up and down, and the fan would get stuck on like it was trying to cool.
Not certain Zack...
Thanks for sharing your experience on this issue!
So sorry to learn about your troubles. Glad you posted here for others to learn from!
I had the GM service department do the recommended flush. It definitely helped for a while but the shudder can back after a while.
Thanks for the input Travis, and so sorry to hear that the issue came back! Was another solution offered by the service department?
The service department says everything is fine but soon as I drive home it’s shaking again even after four fluid exchanges. 1700$ later

Thanks for posting your experience for others!
Did you fix it?
normal trans fluid temp is 160-175 thats odd its so low on yours and with towing? must have a huge cooler or faulty sensor
Thanks for posting here! Others can benefit from your experience with this problem.
That's fantastic! Thanks for posting.
My 2018 started doing it at 56k and when I took it to the dealership they told me there was a service bulletin on the issue. They did a good clean and flush, put the right tranny fluid in it and I'm at 88k now with 0 problems.
That's great Jim! Thanks for posting.
2014 Silverado with same problem. Very annoying and not fun to drive half the time. How much does the flush cost through gm? I need it done

OK, that is very interesting. Thanks for posting @jimruell1375
I tend to agree... much rather have the 6-speed vs the 8-speed.
We'll see.
So sorry to hear that you're having the same or a similar issue. We'd love to hear an update after the dealer visit!
You shouldn’t have put stop leak in it.
That was your first mistake.
Just change the fluid.
If the shudder doesn’t go away with a fluid change then you need a new torque converter.
You figured it out towards the end.
DON’T PUT STOP LEAK IN IT!
Agreed if trans on its last leg, and leaking maybe use stop leak.
mine has had a very different issue. every morning when I'm driving it out of the driveway, at the first gearshift it seems to have a delay shifting.
It's a mess...
there is a data PID in the transmission control module, look for torque converter clutch slip, or TCC slip, if you see it regularly jumping to ~50, replace the fluid, if you see it going to ~100 or more, its most likely the torque converter was damaged or worse.
GM's service procedure for dealing with this is to exchange ~20 quarts of fluid.
Thanks for the input!
I have the same transmission in my Chevy truck with 40,000 on it & the dealer has replaced the torque converter twice and pump now it’s going back in for the third time in15 months and there replacing the whole transmission!
Good report Ken. I hope that they put the Mobil1 fluid in it rather than the OEM fluid. That should give you more miles and time.
Am I understanding this correctly that the transmission had 193K on it when this was first addressed?
Not exactly. We bought it with 193k miles and got our first taste of this problem.

Hi @tresiii20011. Definately not. It's my understanding that the OEM fluid could be one of the causes of this problem.
Just to be sure, so the dealership doesn't freak out, you brought your own transmission fluid to the dealership? And it's the brand you mentioned in your video?
@hopfammedia oh do you change the filter too?
Hi @tresiii20011, yes. That is correct. You might contact the service department ahead of time and let them know what you want to do. They may have this fluid on the shelf by now.
@@freedomfamilyautogroup called the local gmc dealership, they will not do the mobile one transmission oil change, so I'm going with a local transmission shop that will do the job, at half the cost, thanks so much for your information.
Is there any knowledge of this in the 2021 chevy colorado ZR2?
If it's the 8-speed automatic, then yes.
My 17 shudders around 45-55 on the highway it’s done it since 15k miles now it has 145k miles
Thanks for sharing! Some owners may simply choose to endure the shudder.
Do you recommend to have it serviced at a dealership than any transmission shop?
Thats tough to answer since different areas offer better or poorer service. We were reccomended by a quality trans rebuild shop in Northeast MS to have the Chevy dealer do it. So, I'd lean towards the Chevy dealer option first.. Hope this helps.
I have a question I have a 2017 Colorado and mine is doing the same thing how much was for a full flush?
Hi Alex, it has been awhile so pulling from memory... I think around $500 for dealership flush.
Same exact issue started on my 2019 Colorado 4- 5 weeks ago. It only has 30,000 miles on it 🤦🏻♂️
Michael, So Sorry you have to go through this!!! With your mileage, I'd definately recommend the dealership flush. See if you can get it swapped to the Mobil 1 Trans fluid. Hopefully that will get you back on the road trouble free.
@HopFam Media thx , will do. I'm just glad it's still under the manufacturer's warranty
Very Good!
I don’t have that vibration, but my issue is at low rpm’s it will go like it’s trying to grab that next gear but keeps slipping. It will jump to the next gear by almost stomping the pedal to the floor
I'm thinking transmission rebuild...
Appreciate the feedback @smokey4343
@@freedomfamilyautogroup this is heart breaking to hear. i literally just bought the truck less than a week ago, 2022 midnight black z71 30k miles on it and it didnt happen when i test drove it but within the next day or two i definitely noticed it. ive never owned anything newer than a 2005. always liked having my vehicles paid in full. finally buy a new truck and this shit happens. very disheartening. i love the truck and really want to keep it, but you think that over time it will keep getting worse?and best to part ways with it? i also looked on the manual on how to check/ change the trans fluid and it literally says "dont check or change it yourself take it to a certified dealer". have you heard of anyone keeping theirs and keeping up with fluid changes etc that it lasts? cause it shifts smoothly other than 1-2 first start of the day
thanks again.
Make sure you are not using the auto mode on the 4 wheel drive selector switch. This causes the shutter.
Good suggestion!
Every 45000 miles tranny filter, fluid and gasket, also rearend, also transfer case if 4x4 and front diff. All done every 45000 need to change.
Wow...
Right ?!?
Okay as someone who knows barely anything about trucks. Would you say Chevy 2022 or 2023 LT trucks have issues? Anything you know from personal research? Looking to getting one with the big screen and want to make sure there is 0 flaws that have plagued forums or complaints you have seen like this.
Appreciate the question @Multimeter1. I am not certain about those year models. If it's the 8-Speed transmission, then expect these problems. Some have given the 10-Speed transmission better reviews. I think it may be too soon to know for sure about it's long term reliability. Hope this helps!
@@freedomfamilyautogroup what makes you say the 8 speed ones gives such issues? Could you explain like I’m a 5 year old
Well, our own experience with a GM 8-Speed was painfull and expensive. The feedback and testimony here from people confirms what we hear from other mechanics. It's a transmission to avoid if you can.
@@freedomfamilyautogroup did they not revise it for the newer models like the Chevy LT 2022 and 2023?
We haven't had one here... and therefore can't say for sure.
How many miles have you driven since the GM flush, has the shudder returned? Thanks
Thanks for the question @gopensstl. We sold that truck through the wholesale market and do not know at this point.
There's a 2016 Colorado Z71 near me with 45kish miles for sale at a great price. Would LOVE to buy this truck but man am I scared to death of the build quality. Just can't do it. What a shame.
@mattp, there's a chance that Colorado has the 6-Speed. In my opinion, it's a better tranny than the 8-Speed.
Hey boss, how much was it for taking it to the dealer and getting the flush done? Starting to get the shudder problem at 80k miles.
19’ GMC canyon. Bought it brand new with 0 miles and is out of warranty unfortunately.
It will probably vary by region, but I believe we are in fluid, flush, and all for less than $500
It was close to 600 at my chevy dealer yesterday, Did not shuder on my way home! Fortunately I have a warranty for a mahor fix if it comes back
Wow, $5-600 for a trans flush and synthetic fluid change! That is crazy! Any cheaper methods out there? Is the GM flush machine something that regular mechanic shops don’t have?
@@GLOCKCOPG23 I have an app tomorrow looking at $650 for the flush
My 2018 8 speed was doing this. And I had the GM flush done under warranty which fixed it. 70,000 miles later and it’s back again.
Thanks for sharing Kyle, maybe have it flushed again?
same on my 2016 ats. my dad told me i should just do trans fluid every 30k
Good idea
Yer a good story teller …I’m hoping I didn’t buy a lemon
I hope you didn't too @skeymoson. Fortunately, there are plenty of testimonials here to learn from and form your own informed response to this issue. Thanks for posting!
Had the shutter at 59k miles. Flush fixed it easily. 2017 GMC Canyon
It's good to read your post @calebmoss2081. Glad it's working for you!
@@freedomfamilyautogroup That was for everything. I just picked up a tube of Instant Shudder Fix and going to try that first. Thanks for answering!
Does the Colorado have the same transmission as a 2018 LT Silverado 1500?
Hi JB, I can't say for certain... But if I had to guess, I'd say yes.
My 08 Colorado does this between 45mph going to 50mph can someone please let me know if they have any knowledge on this? The tires are bigger than the stock ones
08 is definately a different drivetrain. You might want to have it checked by a local transmission shop.
Hot flush 400$
The new transmission fluid 900$
Chevy dealership shop rate 180$ hr
I bought this truck brand new from dealer.
If this continues to be an ongoing problem, I will drop it back off at the dealer and will not make another payment.
Hi Shelby, these estimates seem high. Here's a link to the supplies we used on our Amazon store, currently 6 quarts of transmission fluid costs around $111.

So, it may be good to provide your own fluid to replace after the flush. Completely understand your frustration, we hope this video going over our experience is of help!
I have 18 silverado with shudder. Did new tires, bearings, cv axle and no one could figure it out. My shudder comes and goes and only lasts a few seconds. Does that match your experience or was shutter constant? I mostly notice around 25mph
Hi BKV, our Colorado shutter was very similar with one exception... it would mostly happen at higher speeds as seen in the video.
We understand. It is very frustrating!
Very informative
Thanks @jerrodvan24!
How much did that cost you or was that under warranty?
Not under warranty! Not certain of total costs and think they could vary by region.
Just curious, did your dealership charge you for the flush?
Absolutely.
the flush has not helped mine. we have had the flush done 3 times.
So sorry about your troubles @jackiemathis1393. Appreciate your posting here for others to learn.
Do you recommend me to buy a colorado z71 with 93k miles?
If it has the 8-Speed transmission, then I would not recommend that you buy it @joseeduardorodriguez6597.
@@freedomfamilyautogroup why?
@joseeduardorodriguez6597 I think that is best answered by reading through the comments of current owners of these 8-Speed trannys.
How is doing a year later?
I am not sure. We chose to wholesale it off the lot to another dealer shortly after the video was made. Thanks for asking @andystewart7640.
I’m confused about this. All the old 4/4 jeeps and Chevy trucks have the same shutter. I thought it was normal for a four wheel drive vehicle?? It’s all them gears on the transfer case. And the low gears on the front end and rear
I don't believe this issue is related to gearing within the transfer case or differential.
Luckily I read this article before I destroyed my transmission
Thanks for the update @reginaldmclean8013!
Did the GM flush less than 4,000 miles ago and the shudder is already back. Truck has 17,000 miles on it.
So Sorry, couple questions... 1) did they flush then use the Mobil1 fluid? And 2) Is it under warranty?
@@freedomfamilyautogroup Yes, our local Chevy dealer did the flush with the upgraded fluid. Worked perfectly until last week. As I mentioned I just turned 17,000 total miles and rough guess, it's been less than 4,000 since the flush (having trouble finding my receipt). The truck is a 2020 and under warranty as I bought it Nov 2020 and with the very low mileage. Appointment is Friday AM, I'll try to report back.
Sure do appreciate the feedback.
@@robandcindy2 Did you take it back in and what did they say. Are they gonna help you

Isn't gm being sued for this issue
We have seen a recent article regarding a class action lawsuit on these @863hec.
I know of a couple of tranny shops that disagree. But, if your idea works then thanks for posting it here for the benefit of others.
@treybadd good point!
How much it cost?

I have a 2018 colorado z71, doesnt shudder, just shifts WAY tooo fast
You might benefit from this level of transmission service.
There's actually a lawsuit going on right now because gm knowingly let bad transactions leave their assembly line
Yes, I've heard there may be two class action lawsuits over this.
2019 Canyon does it too😡
What about 99 thousand miles
A 20 dollar bottle of friction modifier will stop shuddering as well
My GMC Canyon has done this ever since 10 thousand miles .

I used Lubegard instant shudder fix on my 2005 Buick Lesabre and it quit shuddering almost immediately.
Nice! How long has it been you used it, and did the shudder come back?
